We saw Twelfth Night (July-Aug 2025) last night. I have been attending OPFT since we moved here…read more15+ years ago and this was one of the best Shakespeare productions they've had. I saw that the Tribune criticized OPFT's take for being too heavy on the comedy and light on the romance. I disagree; I thought that the emphasis on the comedy was a huge plus. Malvolio stole the show with Toby and Sir Andrew as great comedic support. Olivia's flip-flopping was also well executed for some good fun. The Fool had to compete hard for laughs.... I was delighted to find that this production had even our kids (11-13) laughing like crazy. This is excellent accessible Shakespeare in the park that is great for the whole family. Tickets for kids under 12 are just $5.

Why isn't there more outdoor theatre in the Chicago area? As I think of it the only real options for this are Theatre on the Lake, occasionally when there's a Shakes in the park sort of thing happening, and Oak Park Festival Theatre in Oak Park. The work done by this company is really high quality, so you'll definitely get your money's worth and enjoy the performance if you enjoy the play. I came here in 2016 to see Pygmalion after a few years of saying I should go and then not doing so. OPFT has an illustrious history: The theatre was established in 1975 and has included such notable thespians (of course unknown at the time) as David Mamet as William H. Macy. Unfortunately, in November 2021 there was a fire that destroyed much of their equipment, historical documents, and I'm hopeful their fundraising efforts will prepare them to mount a new season this or next summer! Austin Gardens is in downtown Oak Park Parking is found on surrounding streets, or in the village parking lot (free after 6 pm). Accessibility is a bit harder to measure. It's a park, so it is as accessible as any park, but depending upon the type of accommodation you need, your mobility, etc. it may vary how accessible it is for an individual. They don't have wheelchairs or anything for patron use as far as I know, and as a park it may be difficult to hear at times. Alternatively, both the Green Line and the UP-W Metra line are within 3-5 blocks of the park, so that's a great choice for transportation, too. There are restaurants nearby, or for an even more fun option, bring your dinner to picnic before and during the play. Just don't disrupt your fellow patrons (so that means if you have things in wrapping and what not, maybe wrap in cloth or something that's not going to make a bunch of noise as you open it!).

Ever since seeing Sleep No More in NYC, I've been looking for another immersive theatre experience…read more After doing some research, I found that Windy City Playhouse had a few offerings. We opted to go for the new play The Reservation instead of the long standing Southern Gothic mainly because the former's plot seemed more interesting to me. It was a bit of risk, but boy am I glad we went with it. Without giving too much away, The Reservation has a wonderful mix of current events, humor, and depth. The three actors amongst a 25 member audience gave it an incredible intimate feel that really pulled you in to the acts. Beautifully, beautifully done. I can not recommend this experience enough.

We arrived 30 minutes before the doors opened and found a line wrapped around the block. We had tickets for the second show, so we had to wait for the first show to let out. It was a little chilly so standing outside sucked. But the line moved quickly and finding a seat was painless. I found the venue and seating underwhelming. The seats are cheap folding chairs. They're packed tightly so good luck if you get stuck next to someone that's on the heavy side. During the show, a patron fell out of his seat twice and Janelle James ended up mentioning it in her act. He fell because the chairs were terrible!! Poorly constructed doesn't even begin to cover it. The acoustics were good though. I had no problem hearing Janelle James. I could barely see her though. The seating isn't elevated or sloped, so if you're short and surrounded by taller people, then you'll be staring at the back of their heads all night. That sucked, but what can you do? I caught glimpses of her sporadically, which ended up being fine. I didn't buy any food or alcohol, so i have no opinion on that. We exited the venue as quickly as we entered, which was a plus. I think it helped that we were seated towards the back. We got to the brown line in no time and were home soon after. The show was entertaining and I had a good time. Overall, the experience was satisfactory, but, I doubt I'd visit this venue again anytime soon.

Ronnie Marmo's portrayal was incredible, if you get a chance, this show is an absolute not miss! While he was a bit before my time, I learned of him via the "Mrs. Maisel" show. Mr. Marmo's authentic and realistic portrayal made us think throughout the show what is "freedom of speech" and its impact on this country and and its citizen. It's so much nicer than I imagined. The lounge is beautiful. Lots of seating. 2 bars for drinks. We were in the main stage & all of seats are fantastic. We had middle back & it was perfect. You can order online & the attentive staff delivers. There were 3 opening comedians. All were so funny. James was so great. I love that we were at the last show of his Chicago gig. I felt like he was so relaxed & hilarious. I can't wait to come back here.

The Den Theatre hosted what could have been the worst performance I have ever seen, The Peep Show…read more I left at intermission and only want to warn others. The best entertainer was the magician but yet the burlesque dancers made me and others disappear. They were unapologetically lethargic and not enthusiastic. Nothing sexy or entertaining... The Den is a staple of Milwaukee Avenue but this show was a complete miss. Go see a movie instead of seeing this show. It will be better entertainment for your hard earned dollars.

The Gift Theatre can be easy to miss, as its storefront location is a teeny bit north of the intersection of Milwaukee and Lawrence. The box office / lobby area is a quaint little space with a couple of chairs in case you want to wait to enter the theater for seating. The theater space itself seats about 50 or so. The Gift Theatre annually puts on TEN, a compilation of ten vignettes mixing drama and comedy sketches. The dramatic scenes can be very powerful, and the comedy bits can be simultaneously hilarious and thought-provoking. My lovely friend and I really enjoyed TEN earlier this year, and felt that the $10 ticket price (plus minimal service fee) was also an excellent entertainment value. I get that you don't want to interrupt but who starts at the exact time of the show AND can't let people in late??!! Not a good policy for a small theater. I've been to hundreds of plays throughout Chicago and this was the only one that was poorly set up like this. It's too bad because the play itself was probably good. When I asked about a refund the answer was "I'll let them know you showed up." Aka, you get no refund even though we never told you that you have to show up exactly on time and you're just SOL.

Tickets are easy to purchase from the Steppenwolf website. As this is a smaller, intimate theater, really not a bad seat in the house. Pricing is affordable. They allow drinks purchased there to be brought into the theater. They have 2 bars and a small snack area for treats. Bathrooms are gender neutral stalls. Parking is either street parking (if you feel like driving around to snag a spot), their paid lot, or I recommend using park whiz app to find a garage a couple of blocks away. It is also near CTA. I find the history of Steppenwolf to be interesting. (A great ensemble cast) Check them out!

It all connects. I laughed. I cried. I snorted from laughing. What a gorgeous interpretation! The Steppenwolf theater had wide aisles (so really you don't even have to get up when others are passing by to get to their seats). There's lots of restaurants around there to dine before the show or grab a drink after!
