It had probably been a decade since I last caught a show here. When I saw actor Gary Cole was coming to town, I grabbed a friend and said let's catch his show! Tickets are easy to purchase from the Steppenwolf website. As this is a smaller, intimate theater, really not a bad seat in the house. Pricing is affordable. They allow drinks purchased there to be brought into the theater. They have 2 bars and a small snack area for treats. Bathrooms are gender neutral stalls. Parking is either street parking (if you feel like driving around to snag a spot), their paid lot, or I recommend using park whiz app to find a garage a couple of blocks away. It is also near CTA. I find the history of Steppenwolf to be interesting. (A great ensemble cast) Check them out! read more

I recently lost my Mom and after seeing The Movement You Need, a part of me felt healed. Brendan took all the bad shit that could have weighed him down and reframed it as lampposts in his story of how his love for the Beatles was fueled by his love for his parents. It all connects. I laughed. I cried. I snorted from laughing. What a gorgeous interpretation! The Steppenwolf theater had wide aisles (so really you don't even have to get up when others are passing by to get to their seats). Amadeus was my very first experience at the Steppenwolf Theater. We had an amazing time. The stage was in the center surrounded by choice seats all the was around. Actors also went up and down the stairs near the audience which provided a more immersive experience. The sound system is amazing. Light SFX from above was icing on the cake. Alcohol, beverages, and snacks were available. There is a bar lounge area for pre-performance and intermission. Can't wait for our next experience! read more

In its 50th year, this theatre is legendary for stellar productions. Multiple theatres within the complex, so it can accommodate large audiences and also more intimate experiences depending on the production. Excellent and friendly staff. Easy to get there on multiple train lines. I've seen several shows here over the years and they've all been top tier. I just saw "Feat" a few days ago with Chicago's own Cameron Esposito in the Ensemble Theatre, a smaller and lovely intimate space. Beautiful venues! Lovely bar area. This has to have been my first time here in almost a decade! I want to be more flexible about the locations of places, but I admit I often use the excuse of Steppenwolf being 'way' out there. It is near public transportation in a great area, but from where I live, I often opt for some place closer like downtown. But it was Amadeus and a birthday weekend, so I really wanted to make an effort. We went to dinner at Vinci nearby (please read the review of that ordeal separately) and headed to the theater. I was surprised to see a separate cafe/bar (Front Bar) probably useful for before/after a show. We headed in an picked up our tickets. We were in the upstairs theater, In the Round, for Amadeus. One has to watch for actors to appear and make entrances near your seat! I remembered the movie 'Amadeus' and the acting/script was so similar; the diversity was refreshing but not distracting. A lot of talent on this stage. I always liked how risky (and risque') this theater is daring to be. It's a good place to go for a challenge. Looking around the lobby you can see old pictures from the early days, 50 years ago, and it's cool to see household like names with baby faces, like John Malkovich, Laurie Metcalf, Gary Sinise, Gary Cole, John C. Reilly. The theater has become so much more diverse since those days. We got hot drinks and a cookie at intermission. After the show, we were asked to consider making a contribution to several fundraisers connected to the theater via cash or a QR code. I admire what they do for the theater community but it could be seen as off-putting after spending $$ on birthday tickets. The fundraisers are probably for regular theater goers, patrons of the arts. Not really me, but it shows we can support the arts in both big and small forms. read more

We went to watch an adapted version of "Dance of Death" by Strindberg. The actors were top notch and the production was excellent, though certain directorial choices were less than ideal. This review however is about the venue: Gorgeous building, convenient valet parking, and fun atmosphere. The staff were wonderful and helpful. There are a few bars in the building with nice seating, and a small art exhibit about the history of the theatre on one of the higher floors. My recommendation play-wise is to follow the reviews of each production carefully before choosing what to watch. Adaptations of even very highly acclaimed plays may not always hit the mark. One great thing about the Steppenwolf is the fantastic student tickets, making a visit to the theatre highly affordable. read more

When I lived in NYC, I heard about the Steppenwolf Theater. I heard of some famous actors who came from Chicago. Actors such as Gary Sinise, Joan Allen, Rondi Reed, Ericka Ratcliff, Jeff Perry, and Moira Harris performed here performed here to refine their craft. Steppenwolf has a history of attracting talented actors who devote themselves to theatre. When we moved to Chicago, we definitely needed to see a play. I love the energy, history, and plays from this theater. We first saw "The Most Spectacularly Lamentable Trial of Miz Martha Washington". Fantastic. The actors knew how to act as an ensemble and did not miss a cue. I loved their energy and their spirit. They will definitely go far with their careers. Tonight, we plan to see "Bald Sisters" to celebrate my birthday! Joseph got us amazing seats. One of the best birthdays presents I can ask for - Live Theater! Their parking garage does not have an elevator. Not something that they mentioned when I booked my ticket and specifically asked questions about some of the seats and mentioning I'd be over eight months pregnant at the time I saw the play. Not sure how in the 21st century it's legal to build any multi-story building that's not a house without an elevator, and really pissed I had to struggle up to the third level of parking with a six pound baby blocking my lungs. Even worse I'm not sure what someone who's disabled, has a broken leg, etc. and actually CANNOT use the stairs is supposed to do... had I come with my usual theatre partner, I'd have had to leave the garage again to drop them off right in front of the theatre and hope the parking attendant let me in again. Also, the Saints' (volunteer ushers) weren't there when I was seeking my seat, and when others came in they were struggling to help people find their seats. I've been a Saint so I know that it's a bit of a crash course when you arrive at the theatre so just remember to be flexible with the volunteer ushers. read more

We caught a preview performance of "Purpose," an emotionally charged, cleverly-written play about a fictional famous Black family. Each actor, many of whom have TV & movie credits to their name, brought a fire to the stage. What an absolute treat to witness their characters interact. The three hours (with one intermission) went by in a flash. Had second-row seats in the "Downstairs Theater" which is just intimate enough to have a great view from every seat. If "Purpose" isn't Broadway-bound, I'd be surprised because it deserves to be picked up. Street & paid lot parking nearby. read more

This theatre is truly a hidden gem. We had gone for the 'A home what howls' play. The tickets were very reasonably priced. The theatre is beautiful! The construction is interesting and new. They have a couple bars to grab drinks before you sit down for the play. The main theatre where the actors perform is huge with tons of seating. I love the fact that the seats are very close to the stage and the stage is in the center. This allows for you to truly have an immersive play experience. The actors are really talented! We found the play really impressive. A must visit in old town! read more

seats were terrible and uncomfortable. It's the biggest retraction from the performance to be honest. It felt kinda like metal bleacher seats with cheap foam padding. The ensemble theater E214, E215. I saw Miz Martha Washington in September in The theater downstairs and it was fine. But we saw Bald sisters this time around, the show itself was excellent and moving. Beautiful theater with close parking lot options - we parked at a nearby by garage at 755 W Halsted for $11 on spot hero. We went to see Purpose here and it was a phenomenal production. I thoroughly enjoyed this play. We sat in the last set of box seats on the left side of the theater. Our view was obstructed some so beware of that if you choose those seats. You can see our view in my photos. Outside of the box seats, it seemed all other seats were great, even in the balcony. read more

I exchanged a performance ticket because of severe icy weather and my fear of falling due to my 92 year age and was charged additional fees for doing so - one fee for exchanging the ticket and another fee for doing it by phone which is not available to exchange online. I came here for the first time this weekend (even though I live down the street), and I'm upset it's taken me this long to see a show at Steppenwolf! Familiar was absolutely incredible, the cast was hilarious and engaging and the two hours seemed to fly by. The stage setup was better than I would have ever imagined, every detail so carefully thought out. From the show falling when the cast opened the front door, to the decorations around the house, to the massively filled bookshelf, I noticed and appreciated every element that made this set so great. The cast seemed to have a rapport about them that I think helped make this show so unique. You can tell they love what they do, which made the audience LOVE what they were doing. All in all I would suggest anyone to come check out a show at Steppenwolf. Definitely a fun experience for all! read more

Always a great experience. A wonderfully small venue; there are 3 performing venues. All of them are amazingly intimate - there really is no bad seat in the house. However, because the venue itself is tiny, it does get crowded in the lobby, concession stands and bathrooms (which are gender neutral, get over yourself Sharon and just pee) especially when there are 2 or more shows going on any given night. We enjoyed "The Doppelganger" last night. Great production - the set and blocking choreography was exceptionally delightful, although the last scene was an incredible mindfuck to say the least. As a fellow Seattle-ite, it's always a joy to see Rainn Wilson in a theatrical production. The entire ensemble cast was superb and we really enjoyed ourselves. There is parking, but make it easy on yourself and take Uber or the redline. Plenty of restaurants around for a bite to eat before a show. There didn't seem to be too much open for food after we got out (around 10pm) but we were also there on a Thursday night. read more

This is my favorite theater in Chicago. Why?? You may ask 1. Amazing shows. Obviously if these were bad it wouldn't be a good... but they are not. They consistently premier some of the most cutting edge shows from the world's top playwrights and have the best actors in the nation in them. Not every show is amazing... but I have had some of the single best nights of theatre here. 2. It's non-profit theatre. Most tourists will know the for profit theatres in the city (ie Broadway in Chicago) and those are great. However, with Steppenwolf it is the most amazing non-profit experience. I had an experience here were I felt super nauseous during a show and spent most of it on a bench in the lobby. The house manager was SO accommodating and wanted to make sure I could come back to see the show. CRAZY!! 3. They have a huge focus on education. You ever sit through a piece of theatre and be like, "What did I just see?" Well, Steppenwolf does talkbacks. The moderators like their shows very, but I just saw Bug and it really was amazing to dissect (no pun intended) what I just saw. 4. They also have discount programs. If you love them and can't wait to come back you can buy a membership to save money, you can buy a black card to save money. IF you are under 30 they have an amazing program where you can pay $100 and get a red card to redeem for 6 tickets at any time (they don't expire). Use the credits to bring friends too! (I'm preempting this with a disclaimer that this commentary is NOT in any way to be construed as being critical of the Steppenwolf venue) Since its inception Steppenwolf has always been a place that has helped me (as theatre often does) get 'back in touch' with myself about what's going on in the world around me. Theatre evokes responses within us we often never knew were there and pokes at the demons within that most would prefer to be suppressed. And I really embrace that opportunity when ever I can. Steppenwolf is always just 'a cut above' other venues in that regard. It rarely disappoints. The new facility is lovely. This recent visit, right out of the box, took my sensibilities to test and forced me to take a harder look inward and wonder if I've reached my saturation point or if I simply need more 'work'. I've decided it's the latter. And it had nothing to do with the production I came to see. This was my first real-life encounter with a large scale ALL GENDER bathroom concept. Upon arrival through the newer area by the bar the first thing I headed for (with urgency) was the restroom. So, when I encountered the ALL GENDER sign with folks of ALL genders waiting to get in I thought 'nope'. Not this time. This was not a time I wanted to mingle with the sexes in an intimate setting. In other words, If this were a 'standing room only' event (if you get my drift) I likely wouldn't have had half the anxiety with the experience. In fact, I might even have embraced it. But this was going to be a 'sit down-make yourself comfortable' occurrence. Ya feelin' me? OMG. The horror set in. I wasn't quite ready for this 'test of reality'. There was a real 'Alfred Hitchcock The Birds' moment happening right there in my head. I wanted to cry, truth be known. Here I am confronted with what (privately) I've been advocating as NO BIG DEAL.....But, apparently, now it is. So, I plunged in and said a Novena for the casualties that were about to occur. I so didn't want my first experience to be a Saint Valentines Day Massacre. But, alas, it was. I could hear patrons (understandably) scurrying out (poor things). The woman on her cell phone in the next stall abruptly hanging up and dashing out--not even (I'm surmising) washing her hands. Then, inevitably I had to face the conga line as I washed my hands and walked out. And there they were. The grandmothers. The disabled. Young lovers on first dates. Dignitaries from foreign lands. All looking and whispering and--judging. Oh my, they all knew it was ME. I just threw my covid mask over my entire face, lifted my collar, hunched my shoulders and burrowed my way through. It was only then that I noticed the sign directing patrons of the more 'traditional' restrooms available across the lobby. Other than that, I enjoyed the play. And the bartender makes a mean Manhattan! All four of them! read more

EXCELLENT THEATER, EXCELLENT ACTORS My review is based on going to the Steppenwolf Theater more than 10 times over the last several decades. There have been lots of changes at the Steppenwolf over the years. The one thing that remains the same, decade after decade, is excellent Actors/acting at this excellent theater. We saw "True West" which is a dark comedy based on 2 brothers who have not seen each other in 5 years. The brothers have a volatile relationship. It is up and down. The ending always shocks me. Very powerful. "True West" was up for a Pulitzer Prize in the early 1980s, but it did not win a Pulitzer Prize. The play, "True West" is written by Sam Shepard who won a Pulitzer Prize in 1979. It is an excellent play. I remember seeing "True West" in the early 1980s at the Steppenwolf Theater with John Malkovich and Laurie Metcalf. Metcalf played the role of the mother. It was incredible then and it is still as powerful today. During the performance, Malkovich really urinated into the kitchen sink. Seriously! Sam Shepard was born in Sheridan, IL with a population of under 1,000 people. Shepard passed away in 2017 in Midway, KY. Midway is a very small town under 900 people. Sadly, we lost a fantastic and excellent playwright and actor. Sam Shepard died of Lou Gehrig's disease. We purchased 2 tickets through HotTix (half price tickets), Wednesday, August 7th, for the August 9 play. Our total cost was $67 -- tickets are claimed at the "Will Call" window. YES, ONLY 67 freakin' bucks! It was very easy to claim our tickets upon arrival. We also had excellent seats! We were in the first row on the right side of the stage. I strongly recommend trying HotTix. There is theater parking for $13 about 500 ft. away from the Steppenwolf Theater. A short, easy walk. We live in the city. We took public transportation to the Steppenwolf. We took the "El" Blue line; got off at Damen & Milwaukee Ave., hopped on the North Ave bus (#72 CTA) going east bound. The Steppenwolf Theater is less than 2 miles away from the CTA Blue line. We arrived at the Steppenwolf at 6:25 p.m. It was a quick commute, and also a very short walk once we got off the bus. The neighborhood is a metropolis of 20 & 30, something. Some smoking e-cigarettes and pot looking for something to do on a Friday night (drink, drink till you drop). Bars. Restaurants. Frozen yogurt. Donut shops. Pizza joints. The area is always filled with excitement and electricity. Always busy. It's definitely an area of the city where you may want to consider an Uber, Lyft or PT. I highly recommend the Steppenwolf Theater for several reasons: 1) excellent actors 2) high quality productions 3) excellent, safe location 4) easy to reach by public transportation 5) tons of restaurants nearby 6) tons of bars nearby (score)! 7) fantastic price point (through HotTix) 8) a fun evening (great date night place) 9) no obstructed views whatsoever 10) Friendly/helpful employees read more

The Steppenwolf Theater is wonderful. You can tell that they renovated or newly built almost everything. It feels fresh and magnificent. They were checking vaccine cards at the door and the process went quick and smooth for us. Guests are required to wear masks also. The bars were open, but they did not allow any food or drink into the theater area. I believe that is to enforce the mask policy and I was completely good with that. As we entered the theater we were struck with the newness all around. The theater must have underwent a big renovation. It was spectacular. I loved everything about the Steppenwolf Theater. The best part was the comfort and roominess of the theater seats. It was like relaxing in your favorite chair at home but getting to see your favorite comedian. What I also loved about the Steppenwolf Theater was the intimateness of the theater. Even though we sat in the balcony we still felt quite close to the stage. I can't say enough about the venue. We really loved it. And of course we loved the show. Mike Birbiglia is our favorite comedian and we came into town specifically to see his show "The Old Man and the Pool". And it did not disappoint. Birbigs is a magnificent comedian but he may be an even better story teller. His shows always come full circle in the most beautiful way. We had a wonderful evening at The Steppenwolf Theater and we would not hesitate in the future to return for another show. read more

I went to Steppenwolf to see Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night. The venue is well organized with a lovely bar next door. The theatre is a nice size without a bad seat in the house - with the exception of the front row far right or far left seats. We had front row center - on the aisle seats. Premium. When we got there someone was in our seats. I went to an usher who quickly got the house manager to assess the situation. He was on it immediately and handled moving the patrons to their correct seats. I believe that they thought they were in the right seat but didn't know that the numbering started over in each section. Honestly that was confusing to me too. Perhaps they could rethink the numbering of their seats but that is it. There is a cash parking lot that is $13. You can stay parked there for 90 minutes after the show. Very convenient. read more

Awesome place to see a play! Came over last Saturday to see Sex With Strangers, which is a great play (go see it). Once we came off of the elevator, there was a girl standing there to greet us and letting us know where we can hang our coats. She also directed us to the bar. The bartender told us in addition to the drinks we were buying that very moment, we could purchase drinks for intermission right now. He told us if we paid for them now, they would be waiting on us once we came out for the break. Came out and they were definitely there with our names on them. Love a place where you can have a drink while watching a show! There is no bad seating in the theater as you have a great view from all angles. A great theater that is easy to find/get to! Getting in and out of the theater has yet to be a hassle. They have a great bar inside that you can grab drinks from any time. It can get pretty busy before and after the show, but you still have more than enough room to sit and mingle if you wanted. I recently went to see The Doppelganger which was FANTASTIC! It has Rainn Wilson as the lead and I was able to snag some rush tickets. Calling the theater was seamless and the customer service is top notch. The employee warned me that the view might be obstructed but that was not the case, thankfully. Even when sitting on the far left, you can see everything perfectly fine. The tickets were ready at will-call and the staff in person is pleasant to deal with. My best part is how quickly the staff moves you through lines when scanning tickets. If they notice a long line, they quickly get another staff member on top of it which is so great! read more

One of the many things we love about Chicago is its strong and interesting theater scene, and one of the highlights of that scene is the Steppenwolf. After seeing a few great plays we held season tickets here for several years and so we saw a wide variety of plays that we would never have thought to try otherwise. With very, very, rare exception, everything we saw here ranged from good to incredible, and across a variety of genres and styles. The funny plays are funny; the dramatic plays are dramatic; the plays that are supposed to be socially conscious are actually good and usually surprising, which so few self-consciously political plays are. (Again, I can think of a single exception among several years as I write this review.) There's also affordable garage parking, very helpful staff who will help you switch your season tickets millions of times to accommodate your wife's litigation schedule, a nice-looking bar next door with a few snacks, and good Mediterranean food across the street. I cannot think of another theater, anywhere in the country, that I would rather hold season tickets. read more

I was staying near this legendary theater so wanted to see something. The play itself was meh, but the theater is what I am reviewing. All the staff I encountered were very nice, the seat was comfortable and I got such an awesome spot for $20! Affordable theater Tix with mega talented performers. Hershey Felder's OUR GREAT TCHAIKOVSKY in the Upstairs Theater completed my Steppenwolf Experience. Top floor. "Newton's third law of motion states; what goes up must come down." :-D It may have been a one-man show, but...Hershey Felder is stinkin' talented (set designer, sing, play the piano, got facial expressions, got the hair going, can memorize, appropriate responses to Q&A, sense of humor, intelligent...dancing skills remains to be seen LOL). Decent accent with a distinct NY accent at the tail. As a classy theater, when I am fashionably late by 15 mins, the teal-haired Greeter quickly rushed us to the elevator, calling her colleague via her ear piece for late seaters. Even though we were already late, we were assured that we only missed 10 mins and still encourage/ reminded of restroom use. Never rushed. They got their act and organization skills down! Unlike the dictatorial rule of The Lyric, Steppenwolf has a ledge for Brown Bags. I don't understand why theaters prohibit brown Bags where wines and beers are allowed. This place is such a huge part of Chicago's great theater scene and history, it's difficult to not geek out a little when I walk through the doors. The theater is once again open and offering a special on their website of 4 plays for $150.00, which is a great deal. We went and saw Bug recently, and were impressed with the great acting, the staging and the inventive set. The recent expansion is a great addition, offering educational programs for teens and adults. I'm looking forward to seeing many more productions here. Great location close to the North & Clybourn stop on the red line. read more

Two knocks. I subscribed before covid and saw two shows. One was just boring. And the other mediocre. As a bonus, due to covid the other 4 shows were only offered virtually. I was neither given a credit or a refund. I do not understand why this company is rated so positively. I've seen consistently better productions out of other Chicago theaters and when covid struck I received a refund or credit. Steppenwolf was a failure on both fronts. read more
