I went to this theater last night to see White Noise. The show was beyond amazing!!! It made me laugh, it made me cry, had fantastic third row seats, just loved it! The theater itself I actually enjoyed. It's not a huge theater so I'm sure every seat feels like a good seat. The sound just fills the space and the lighting is amazing. I felt bad for one older lady who was in the second row and had serious issues getting up the stairs to the main stairwell. They were too steep for her and no proper railing for her to grab onto. I bought 2 pops before the show and they were $4 each which ended up costing me $10 because of tip! And it was literally just 2 cans of pop poured out, I saw the bartender do it. I could have got 48 cans of pop for $10. Ugh. Super high drink prices is my point. Lastly, there is no parking. There are some street spots but the valet comes and tells you you'll get ticketed. So then, there is no where but the valet parking. You pay the valet $11 who then takes your car two inches away to their personal parking garage and then you have to tip him. So $15 for the parking garage parking, ugh again. Steppenwolf across the street is $10 but you can only park there if you are seeing one of their shows. :( Either way, LOVED the show! But this theater tries to squeeze every extra cent out of you.

In all of the years we've live near Chicago, we've never gone to the Royal George Theater until now. It was a great experience. The Royal George is a theater on the small side. They have a great reputation for putting on good shows, and our experience met expectations. The seats are comfortable, but more importantly, the entire theater seating is tiered so there is no bad or obstructed view of the stage. We saw the play "Old Jews Telling Jokes" which came to Chicago after a successful off-Broadway run. As soon as the doors to the theater opened, we were let into a narrowish hallway where others were waiting until the doors to the main theater opened. Displayed in the hallway are posters of various shows they've hosted. There is a small bar toward the back. My only disappointment was there was a display case showing souveniers (T-Shirts, CDs, etc.) but none were available for sale there. If you want something, you have to go online. Not sure if that is the way the Royal George operates, or if it had something to do with this specific show. Overall, a great experience. We made sure to sign up for their mailing list so we would know of upcoming shows.

Woman in Black is amazing! Go see it now! Super convenient location right across the Clybourn Red Line Station. No food is sold at the theater, you might want to eat before or after. I did see a few restaurants nearby, burger bar is just around the corner. Theater was clean, the stage is small and I think the theater sits quite a bit of people, at least enough to make a huge line for at the bar for drinks during intermission and to the restroom, specially the ladies. Paid $12 per cocktails. I also got some Famous Amos and a small cup of Chex Mix for $3 each a bit expensive I though. Perhaps the rudest audience I've ever seen. At the beginning of the play a young lady had not put their phone away and an older gentleman hit her on the shoulder with the programme. "Put your f*cken phone away" he said. Later on while I was enjoying the Chex mix that I paid for and that the theater sold to me. An older gentleman in front of me told me to stop eating them. I will definitely come back though.

LIFE IS A SHOW There is always something going on here just simply look at the marquee and you will probably see 4 shows up there. I have been to the larger theater in front and the smaller theater in the back. Just make sure you know which show you are going to because you don't want to end up in the wrong theater. Recently we went to see "Old Jews Telling Jokes" and I must admit it was really funny. The cast of 5 had amazing timing and were incredibly funny. Tim K of SNL fame and The Police Academy movies was the most recognizable headliner. They really seemed to enjoy working on stage together. I really enjoyed the few times they cracked each other up on stage. It makes it feel real. I think some of the jokes were improv sessions because they seemed to be surprised by each other during some parts of the show. Not only were there great jokes but there were some funny and entertaining songs. I would recommend the show if you're looking for a good laugh. The theater is incredibly comfortable. The aisles on the main floor have tons of leg room. In fact, someone can pass in front of you with out much trouble. It's like the bulkhead on an airplane. There's a balcony here but I've never sat up there. There's a bar in the lobby and you are allowed to bring drinks into the theater. The bar is cash only, so hit an ATM on the way in. The box office is located to the left when you walk in. The staff is so friendly and nice. They were very helpful when trying to find my tickets. I felt bad as they searched for them. They kept apologizing and fixed it immediately. That's great customer service and I love that. There is so much theater in Chicago and a ton of a shows happening on any given night. This is just one of many theaters putting out entertaining shows. So if you're in the mood for some fun theater, then I would check out to see what they have playing here. And Scene!!!

I came to the Royal George Theatre for the first time over the weekend to see Spamilton! There was a long waiting time outside the theater before we were let in and there wasn't a lot of seating. It wasn't particularly cramped so I was fine with this, but it's something to watch out for it you're a person who can't stand for long periods of time. They have a few stages here, and inside is like a maze to get to your correct theater. The theater that Spamilton was in was pretty small. The stage was low to the ground and the incline wasn't very steep so unless you were in the first row or two, the bottom half of the performers are going to be covered with the back of people's heads (see photo). The seats were comfy, and the play was great! Late Night Catechism is at this theater and that's one of those shows I've been meaning to see since I moved to Chicago 14 years ago and never got around to, so I'll definitely make a point to come back. That being said, the face value of the ticket price for the show I saw was definitely not worth the experience of seeing a show at this theater. I like to support local theaters so I'll come back regardless, but that's something to think about if you're going to see a show here -- I often find shows here listed on deal sites so I'd watch out for those rather than pay full price (which is what I did for Spamilton).

    Hilarious.

We went to see Bible Bingo which was a riot. The lead actress made us all laugh for two hours. Intimate theater with a bar inside so we had a drink and laughed while we enjoyed the program. We even got to play bingo during the show. Highly recommend.

We seen the Cubs play, Miracle. Had no idea what to expect. I read nothing about the play prior to seeing it. I am married to a giant Cubs fan and have gone through 20 years of baseball seasons. The play is really based on a fan's perspective- the setting is so fun and so Chicago. This play was soooo good! The theatre is nice, clean and intimate. We sat in row D, center stage- perfect seats- although I don't think there's a bad seat in the place.

I attended a showing of Spamilton at the Royal George Theatre. As I walked it I was greeted right away and pointed in the right direction to retrieve my tickets. Getting my tickets was a breeze, they easily found my name and had my tickets ready to go. I arrived a little early and enjoyed a glass (well really a plastic cup) of wine. It was decidedly "meh." But the bartender was kind and attentive and very helpful. It's also nice that we can bring any food or drink purchased at the bar into the theater. Seating outside the theater is limited and it was awkwardly quiet as we waited for the theater to open. It has a pretty plain interior that was dark and uninteresting (compared to other theaters in town.) But once the door opened the staff were very helpful and super friendly. The show was great and we really enjoyed ourselves.

When we first arrived, upon checking our tickets, our tickets wouldn't scan/verify. The usher was getting frustrated with us for this, and made us go to the ticket booth to get our physical tickets. We showed the person the tickets on our phone, and she printed them out for us -- after several rounds of confusion on her part. She was so soft spoken (in a noisy theatre entrance) that it led to much confusion. After this, we had to "cut" back into the entrance line (the security guard was helpful here) and we got thru the gates, finally. Then this usher/ticket checker who scanned our tickets (the 2nd time) was literally yelling at us on which direction to go (not a yelling as in being loud, but yelling like we were stupid). I go the way he yells at me because he won't stop yelling at me to go the direction he points me in -- which is the wrong direction. We had orchestra seats and were headed there, but this usher/ticket checker was yelling at us to go up the stairs. Fine, maybe I'm wrong. We get upstairs, and the 2nd usher again points us in the wrong direction to go further upstairs. This is again incorrect. We are flustered and confused, and not sure what is going on. We finally reach the 3rd usher at the top of the stairs, and he finally points us in the correct direction. The ushers here (Sans the 3rd one) were incompetent and rude.

Somehow, I learned about a children's production presented through their educational wing. I'm not sure if their education & engagement was this strong in years past or perhaps I simply wasn't dialed into their offerings, but that's definitely changing now. We went to see Splish Splash. This was a 50 minute long story about a blue heron and friends who are seeking to repair the moon after it fell into Lake Michigan. There were songs, there was play, and it was highly interactive. The kids--fellow "sailors", along with three of the cast members--learned a song to sing along at various parts of the show. There were several times when the kids were invited onto the "stage" (it was in one of their lab/classroom spaces, so there wasn't a raised stage) to help or participate. It was so well done, and kept the kids engaged. I really loved how this experience was designed. Upon arrival we were checked in and pointed to one of the classroom spaces. I was surprised because I wasn't sure how actors could be safe there, but it was actually a room for the kids to color and read books or play with toys and stuff before we were taken into the room where the performance took place. I've only seen something that was meant to keep kids busy like that before showtime is at Filament Theatre, and we've gone to kids shows at two or three other theaters by now. It was a great touch. This production was specifically geared toward children aged 0-5, which is atypical and felt so special that it was written with the littlest theatergoers. One of the important pre-show reminders was for adults, reminding us that it's a no-shush zone! I'm so excited that one of the most important theaters in the city, and the oldest non-profit theater still in operation in Chicago, is so committed to developing young audiences in an exciting way and meeting them where they're at. I was reminded of the same issues I mentioned in my earlier review, issues that persist after almost a decade. Like many theatres, they make you wait outside (in this case, in the cold), while they get the theatre ready. Maybe they don't want to pay for the workers to be there for too long beforehand? It makes for a crappy experience. You are then funneled inside while security guards bark orders at you, even when all you're doing is trying to find your way inside in a polite manner. Luckily, the guard in our line was nice enough and joked around with the kids. The lobby is tiny, unlike the other major theatres downtown, so that is something to be aware of. There's really zero room to breathe, and the intermission bathroom line snakes up from the basement into the bar line. Luckily, I got there earlier on, but that's a bad experience. The bathrooms aren't that nice, sadly, and they could use extra care. There are a lot of stalls that don't lock, don't have purse hooks attached anymore, etc. Worse yet, the attendants are on a power trip, though they're not quite as mean as others in similar theatres, and the line moves quickly. I just don't appreciate them yelling "up against the wall!" It's a bit much. The orchestra seats were pretty comfortable and even have good sight lines for short people! From what I saw, the snacks weren't as expensive as one might imagine, though not cheap. Frustratingly, there is no public wifi here. What year is it?

I attended The Phantom of the Opera last night and unfortunately, the experience was significantly disrupted by a visibly intoxicated family seated nearby. They spoke throughout the performance and, most notably, sang very loudly during the final song--directly over the performer during what is meant to be a pinnacle and emotionally powerful moment of the production. This behavior was disruptive and diminished the experience for many audience members in the surrounding area. This was not an isolated incident. Last year, while attending Moulin Rouge at your theatre, I experienced a similar situation involving two belligerent and intoxicated audience members who talked, sang, danced, and cried audibly through much of Act I and part of Act II before finally being escorted out. I paid $250 for my ticket last night to see one of my favorite musicals, and it is deeply disappointing to have that experience compromised by behavior that should be unacceptable in a professional theatre setting. Audience etiquette is essential to preserving the integrity of live performance, and more proactive intervention would go a long way in protecting both patrons and performers. I want to emphasize that the theatre itself is beautiful, and the productions you host are outstanding. It is precisely because of the quality of your programming that I feel compelled to raise this concern. I strongly encourage you to consider stronger audience management practices to ensure that future performances can be enjoyed as intended.
