My husband, being a former firefighter is obsessed with car washes, so whenever we are out for a spin, we often need to stop for a carwash. I am personally awful at carwashes unless I was the car myself (garden hose technique). So, on a recent afternoon, we took a tour through the small carwash at the Madonna Road Shell Station. I was waiting for him to pay, admiring the trees planted around the car wash, and how clean the station was, and watching people pump gas. I found myself actually looking forward to the car wash. Sure enough, after giving our code, we proceeded through a modest but effective wash. I liked that there were no rails to ride on, no attendant, and the car sat still in the wash instead of the hurkey jerky automated version. There was plenty of water, and soap, and spinners, and more water and wax, and more water, then a good blow dry on the way out! And all for a budget friendly $10.00! read more

Stopped here before checking in to the Madonna in and stopped again before getting on the road to head home. Both times the customer service was great. The bathrooms, outside to the left (need a code), were clean and did not smell. Plenty of options to choose from in the store. Gas was reasonably priced. read more

I was camping in Morro Bay and ran out of propane overnight Friday night. Bad times. In the morning I set out to find some propane in town but only found cylinder exchanges. I searched for LP refill in SLO and found this Shell station. I didn't want to drive to SLO and fail, so I called them first. "Shell." "Do you refill propane tanks?" "Yes" "Do you actually have propane in stock?" "Yes" "And you're open?" "Yes." "You're not just saying yes, are you?" "No." "Thanks. See you in twenty minutes." So I drove to SLO and found this station. It was pretty busy and I couldn't park right next to the LP spot, so I parked next to the carwash and started to walk into the store. About two steps later, I heard: "Sir!" Ehrm, what did I do wrong now? I'm still sleepy from being woken up by the low-LP alarm last night, so I know I've done something wrong. "Sir! You're here for propane?" The dude was standing out next to the LP pump waiting to serve me. Unbelievable. For those of you not used to refilling propane, it's usually a giant pain. You park near the pump and then go find some guy with the world's worst attitude and he sighs deeply while he demands your driver's license for collateral and then it takes another agonizing lifetime for him to find the key to the pump, meanwhile wordlessly telling you with his silence how much he hates you, hates his ex, and definitely hates his job. It's NEVER good. Not here. The attendant was already out there waiting for me, and I still don't know how or why. I think he watched me pull up and I took a long time to park. Very nice service on his behalf. My next surprise was how clean and new the LP pump was. It was gorgeous. I won't go into details, but usually the LP pump is disgusting. This pump was immaculate and the mechanism was futuristic and impressive. When he was done, he didn't just scratch out the meter readings on a slip or write it on my arm with a Sharpie, he actually printed out a receipt. I've never seen that before. I saw the receipt and assumed I was reading it wrong (still sleepy). But no, I was wrong about being wrong. The price was actually correct. I'm so used to getting bent over for expensive LP, but this was actually affordable. This was doubly shocking since everything in SLO is so outrageously priced. This was amazing though. I typically don't tip the propane dudes because they usually have such rotten attitudes, but this whole experience was remarkable. I was so impressed with the cleanliness of the pump and the epic service by the attendant that I tipped him. He was shocked and speechless. I wanted to say, "I know, right? I'm just as surprised as you" but I didn't. I just wished him a great day and he waved goodbye with gratitude. Unrelated to this Shell station, but part of the experience... Since I was already on Madonna Road, I took the long way back to Morro Bay through Los Osos. I was still on kind of an upper from the LP experience and not really thinking--just kind of letting my pickup truck do the navigating for me--and I passed by a park where this girl I was dating back in the 80s and I went for a hike between classes at Cal Poly. I noticed the park as I drove by and recognized it as one of the earliest date spots with my now-wife of 32 years and it really kicked me in the feels. I think my wife expected me to be pretty grumpy when I got back to camp after what's normally a cruddy errand, but I was pretty buzzed with life. This NEVER happens after a propane refill trip. With labor being so scarce and employers having to settle for whatever they can get during COVID, having a tatted-up dude take such great care of me was pretty remarkable (obviously so, as you can see by my long remarks here). I'm grateful for the experience and I absolutely recommend this store for LP fill-ups. I'm sorry I didn't ask for the attendant's name, but I hope the manager or whoever reads this will match up the schedule for Saturday morning, 9/25, and figure out how to give the guy an atta-boy and maybe even remind the rest of the crew that it truly isn't that hard to make an impact on people's day (positively or negatively). It seems they hate Asian because they provided a wrong code for the restroom, but a white person was able to use the right code. Recommend avoiding this Shell gas station. read more

I stopped for gas about 6pm. I paid for my gas and a car wash at the pump. When I went to get the receipt for the car wash code, it said I had to go inside. When i went to go inside, the doors were locked and a sign said "out to lunch". I knocked on the doors. I called the phone number. I called for the attendant at the pump. I called Shell customer service. No one answered because its after business hours. I paid for a car wash and have no way to get the car wash and no receipt to prove I even paid for it. Unbelievably unprofessional business practices. I've been standing outside their doors for over 30 minutes. I will not buy Shell gas ever again! read more

Updated review. Andrew reinstated my faith in the customer service here. He was funny and upbeat, unlike the cashier from my prior experience. Will be coming back during Andrew's shifts only. Worst customer service I've ever had. Guy is sitting there (yes sitting behind the counter) on his phone. He doesn't notice me up at the counter until I unzip my wallet. I tell him what I need and have to repeat everything more than once. Never once did he say how may I help you, just look disturbed that he had to quit playing on his phone. I said "are you not having a good day" and he stared off into space and ignored me. He asks if I need a receipt, and of course I do, I bought a car wash. I've been to this station before with better service but the man working the morning of 8/31/19 at 9 am should not be employed in a customer service position at all!! read more

I would like to say they did better this time, but Madonna Shell failed me again. Stopped in on my way home after work to ask if they could fill my propane tank. The cashier td me no problem, so I said I would be back with my tank. Came back about 30 minutes later with my propane tank and the same cashier told me no because it was too dark out. Never thought I'd write a review for a gas station. On our way to the beach for a family day we stopped in for a snack and gas. The young Indian guy at the counter was on his phone the moment we walked in. He was rude and tried to start a fight with my husband when he asked for the restroom key. My husband was being happy a cheerful and the guys at the counter told him to calm down and asked if we had a problem. We left but yo avoid conflict but I am CVL own away by how we were treated. Calling ahead to assure they had propane, I was greeted to a responsive attendant to top off my (7) 20# bottles. As for refilling in SLO, they are the only game in town. Taylor Rental moved their filling to Paso Robles. Keep it up..! read more

I had three people in front of me and the cashier was ringing up fast, engaging and entertaining! I noticed we all had a smile on our faces! I've never filled up a propane tank before and asked the cashier... Andrew how to go about it. He was so on top of it! Charming, nice and completely taking care of my propane needs! Never thought I'd be on Yelp writing a 1 star review- normally I only come here to rave about my favorites. And I'm honestly not sure how many people check Yelp before getting gas... but here goes! Haha! On 11/29/21 at about 9:15am, I paid for gas and a car wash. The receipt came out with no printing on it so I went inside and asked the cashier (long hair in ponytail, glasses) for the code. No biggie, right? He was unable to pull up my transaction for some reason. Wouldn't give me money back, wouldn't give me a code, wouldn't call anyone for help. He believed me, but told me that he didn't know what to do, I needed to "just let it go", and that I was making him flustered by looking at him while he tried to figure it out. I won't list all the weird snarky stuff he said, but it was bizarre. He truly felt I was being unreasonable for wanting the car wash I paid for or my money back. We talked in circles for a while until I ended up leaving $7 poorer with a dirty car. read more

This is a great place for some last minute gas, an oil fill up and a pretty good carwash on your way to work or a long roadtrip! Love how close it is to the 101 freeway! They get you in, out and on your way in a jiff! And they have a decent bathroom that is very much appreciated by this often-in- need (lol!) customer! read more

Clean bathrooms and modest selection of road trip snacks...It's basically what I look for during a long drive and this Shell fit the bill. It's easy to find right off the same exit as the Madonna Inn and next door to a Denny's. The bathrooms are locked and you need to see an attendant for the key. If you're heading south from the Bay Area on the 101 and need to stop for gas/bathroom/snacks in SLO, then this is your spot. Not much else to say....but thumbs up! read more

This is where we get gas everytime we drive to or from Santa Barbara. Super convenient easy access to the 101 since it's right next to the completely ridiculous Madonna Inn. The bathrooms arent gross or anything... so stopping here isn't too bad. read more

Every year or so I decide to try this station again due to its convenient location but as always, I kick myself. They always have the highest priced gas but this time I wanted some coffee at 2:30 pm. Afternoon boost ya know? So I put the nozzle in the tank , step inside, and the coffee station has nothing. Not even old coffee. Not even a dispenser . Just empty. Very very rude cashier maria and manager. I will never go back. Told me I couldn't get cash for my lotto ticket cuz it says "ticket" I told them every store I've been to they've done it. Maria says "it says ticket" like I'm an idiot that can't read. The manager said every other store doesn't do inventory. Then they wouldn't let me get my ticket or use it elsewhere because they scanned it and it's their inventory. Maybe if they had good customer service I wouldn't be mad but I am and never coming back. The woman behind me had issues w them too and asked for a business card which they didn't have. How do I know that?! Cuz after all that they didn't load my money on the fucking pump so I had to go back and talk to the rude manager. read more

If I could, I would give them a -10. We use this station when we visit people on the coast. We are Fuel Rewards members and the employee (Casey) was not doing something right. Because we did not get our $ off. I let him know he wasn't doing something correct and he laughed at me. This is the 2nd time this has happened at this station. I can't believe I am writing a bad review for a gas station. How difficult is it really? But these guys take the cake. They have permanently closed their restroom even though they are on a major freeway exit. They keep one of their front doors locked at all times which is against firecode. And the guy that works on Sunday morning October 16, 2016 is just rude and of noxious. A total jerk! He treated me badly and said crappy things. After first ignoring me for a ridiculous amount of time. I was the only one in the entire store and I was standing at the register. Don't give them your business!!! read more

From the moment I went in to pay for gas to the time I left the gas station I had a smile from ear to ear. Needed a couple gallons, and I dug some cash out of my purse because the cash price is always better. Of course, I didn't read the sign properly, and the lower price was only for people who got a carwash (which would have been silly for me to do, because it was raining). Andrew was my cashier and he was fantastic, made sure I knew exactly what the deal was, and I wasn't confused about the price. He really went the extra mile, and did it all while doing different impressions and voices and making jokes. The pump, for whatever reason, decided that it didn't like that I tried to pump gas before making my gas selection, prompting it to force me to begin my whole transaction again (but not before trying at least ten times to get the pump working haha like an idiot). read more

This is my go to gas station whenever I'm driving to LA or back from LA. The location is convenient right off the freeway. The store is clean and the couple of times I've dealt with an employee they are always nice. The bathroom is always fairly clean. The only thing I don't like is that the bathrooms are outside around the corner of building. Unless it's during the day I will not use the bathroom since it's not in the store. read more

This is an ok gas station. It's conveniently located near 101, so great if you're going on a road trip. Prices are ok, but definitely better than getting gas around San Simeon and Big Sur if you're going in that direction. Bathrooms are a bit run down, but at least everything works. read more
