Somehow this place got worse since the last time I reviewed it. I went two weeks ago and every dish was finished with a glug of straight up heavy cream which both looked and tasted weird... why is that necessary? I also feel that their curry dishes now have less flavor, are excessively creamy, and overall just less authentic than before. Even the mango lassi was smaller than it used to be. In terms of safety, some staff were not wearing masks inside the building. One man was scrolling through his phone with his mask off in full view of all the customers. Overall cleanliness and covid protection measures seem a bit lacking. I will be trying some other Indian places from now on, as this place no longer delivers consistent and somewhat authentic Indian cuisine. read more

I love a dinner moment with friends here so that we can order different things we can all try. They have a pretty extensive menu so it's been nice to try some new (to me) dishes beyond the basics. We usually do the samosas and pakora to start and always some garlic naan to go with our entrees. Everything I've tried has always been so flavorful and delicious. They are also pretty quick with carry out orders the times I've picked stuff up. Overall, fast service, convenient location and good food! read more

I tend to prefer northern Indian food and flavors, but since they re-opened on Packard I've started exploring the vegetarian side of their southern Indian cuisine. And I'm really impressed. They have diverse sauces thaat are complex with layers of flavors. Their sambar is amazing! And the people behind the counter are very friendly. I really want them to succeed! That said, there are some issues, mostly around process. When ordering online they always say it will take 40 minutes, and often the food is ready in 10 minutes, meaning the food will just sit around for a while cooling off. They should be updating their time estimate throughout the day based on how busy they are. Additionally, the line to the counter can get quite long as that's where people eating in place their orders, and that often involves some back-and-forth with questions and answers. So if you're there for a quick pick-up, it can take a while before it's your turn, and again you find that your food has been sitting there all along. They need to have two separate lines, one for ordering and one for pick-ups, and then be able to call someone from the back to deal with pick-ups when they're busy with orders. Also twice I've ordered their Malai Kofta, a favorite of mine. Their online picture of the dish clearly shows 5 dumplings. Yet they only provided 2 dumplings with each order, which is underwhelming. I really want them to get better and succeed. I hope they'll take these comments to heart and improve. I wish them the best! read more

This place delivered very quickly which was great! The food was very filling but I felt it was pretty pricy considering what you're getting. I got the chicken Tikka masala which came with a container of the sauce and another container of the rice. Total after tips was about $18 for both containers. This is my favourite Indian place in Ann Arbor. I've never been disappointed with their food, and the owner has always been so nice. I was heartbroken when their Maynard St location burned down, so I'm so glad they've reopened! I have only ordered out since (and it's just as delicious as I remember) so I'm not sure what the new locations' ambiance is like, but at this point, the food is so good, I'd sit on a curb just to get it! Though I'm sure they're new location is nice. I'd recommend the paneer or lamb tikka, but you really can't go wrong here. read more

Guess who's back? Back again? Madras is back! Tell a friend. :D Very happy to see them doing well at their new Packard location. They no longer have a buffet but rather have a fast casual dining experience where you order at the counter and the menu has a picture and description for every dish. My family had Mughlai chicken, samosa chaat, and a dosa and all were delicious. The service was incredibly friendly and attentive with the cashier asking us if everything was tasting good. The restaurant was also really clean and organized. They had a rough year after their original location burned and you can tell they are trying hard to reintegrate themselves as a staple on the local food scene, so definitely go show them love. read more

This place is a very solid 4-star. Excellent service and delicious food, but not the most scenic of interiors. We stopped by on a weekend night for dine-in and were pleasantly surprised to see how busy Madras Masala was with take out orders. We've always been loyal to Taste of India but decided to venture out and see what all the hype was about. Overall, the food was tasty but much spicier than other Indian places in the area. We asked for mild but there's was a big discrepancy with the difference in how spicy our chicken curry vs our beef dishes was. It got to the point where it was extremely uncomfortable for me to eat the beef one, as we noticed they put whole jalapeño peppers in the pot as well. The restaurant is very standard as far as ambiance. I don't think they put much thought into their decorations or music but that's expected for a place that kitty corners Skeeps. You get what you pay for! Overall, we still prefer Taste of India over this location but are glad we gave it a shot. read more

I was so excited to see this reopening! I am happy to report that it is better than I remember. We got the tofu curry and podi masala dosa, and they were delicious. The tofu was well cooked and was not bland at all due to soaking up all the spices. The dosa came with two chutneys, a spiced potato filling (our favorite), and a delicious sambar. There was a slight delay between our dishes coming out which we did not mind at all, but due to the confusion we were also given two house desserts which my brother enjoyed. The service was excellent and we especially enjoyed the counter service, as the attending worker was very helpful and gave us recommendations. She was kind and let us know how much they appreciated the support after reopening. Finally, I really appreciate that the updated menu had clearly marked vegan and vegetarian labels, as this is often confusing to explain at restaurants and it was much more streamlined. read more

This is by far the best tasting Indian food in Ann Arbor! We absolutely love it! We tried ALL the Indian restaurants in the greater Ann Arbor area when we first moved here and found Madras was the absolute best. In addition the owner and main staff are extremely kind and wonderful. We've gotten food from this restaurant more than any other in Ann Arbor (probably by 5x any other). When their Maynard street location burned down, we were devastated for them and were forced to return to the hunt for exceptional Indian food in Ann Arbor. We tried EVERY Indian restaurant in town again and were constantly left wanting for Madras. They are now about to reopen on Packard. We can not wait!! We will be there within the first week (hopefully the first day), and we will continue to return regularly to enjoy the absolute most delicious Indian food in all of SE Michigan!! read more

This is a different review tonight. Had a friend in town on business. They wanted some fine Indian cuisine, of course my go to has been Madras hands down. Got in by 8:30pm. Waited to be seated but instead was turned away, they are closing early. I will be back, but I had to make this post and suggest you call before going in the evening. ....so I'm back for my second time this week!!! This time, the lunch buffet had new options which I couldn't resist: chow chow poryal, mixed bhaji, butter chicken and carrot Kheer. The poryal was great with small diced squash, I suspect chayote. Bhaji was fab, and the butter chicken was the best I have ever had. I normally avoid it at the buffet because there are more unique options, but the chicken was soooo tender! The star of the show was the carrot kheer. I had never even heard of such a thing! The best way to describe it is a hybrid between carrot halwa and payasam. If you have the opportunity to try it, do not pass it up. Had I not been stuffed, I would have had a second bowl. As usual, the service and water refills were excellent. This is the best lunch value ever, and it's so exciting to see that they have new offerings everyday. read more

I really love this place, especially for the lunch buffet for $9.99. This place is quite clean with its yellow walls. Nice touch. Nice servers. The buffet is a bit small, but it has all my favorites like buttered chicken, garlic naan, basmati rice, palak paneer (on some occasions) and this mango lassi dessert. Honestly one of my favorite places for food, but as a college student, I can't food coma all the time, so I come here every once awhile with some friends to treat myself (and then take a long nap after that). read more

This was my favorite Indian buffet place back when I was in college. It's been years since I've been here and I was unsure if things would be as amazing as my rose-colored memory. Happy to report that it is! While there is no more buffet, the individual dishes remain abundantly flavorful and plentiful. We ordered the lamb biryani and chicken tikka masala with garlic naan on the side. This continues to be my favorite Indian restaurant in A2. The service is fast and the food is great. So before my most recent visit to Madras Masala, I only raved about it as being the best south Indian food in Ann Arbor. While that's still mostly true, my most recent visit reminded me why I NEVER go sit down to eat there. The service. was. AWFUL. I have seriously never had such awful service and attitude from a server before.. The buffet here is fantastic for lunch so if you're new to Indian food, definitely give this place a go. The price is kind of high, but in terms of other quality Indian food, with South Indian options, you're not going to find them in Ann Arbor. So quality of food is usually pretty good here. Where they lose points is the service and overall cleanliness of the place. My husband and I usually order takeout from here since honestly they seem to give better service to their to-go patrons then people dining in. The place is downright messy. It looked like they hadn't vacuumed in probably a week. The silverware was pretty dirty and we had to replace ours since that's just gross. Then there's the service. We arrived right when they opened for dinner service (around 5:30pm) and were seated in the back of the restaurant. It took about 15 minutes before someone came over with water. And then another 10-15 minutes before we were able to order, which only happened because we flagged some guy down who was working behind the bar. We ordered the vegetarian thali plates which is an array of different rices, curries, etc. - a true south Indian classic. More than half the dishes were cold, and the only hot entrees in the Thali plate were the two "specials" the chef prepared for the plate specifically. It's almost as if the rest was just kept some where and then tossed into a bowl for the thali plate. f When we were done and were able to flag out down a server (different than the one who took our order because that guy was busy standing behind the bar not doing anything else), the server who came over approached our table and said "What's the issue now?" This made me really mad and I simply said "Um. There's no issue. We just need some to-go containers and our check." I honestly think their business model would be better suited to be a buffet-only place and not offer a dine-in dinner service. The servers are rude, don't understand the simplest questions and never check on you once you've received your food. Take out is great. I won't be back to dine in though. read more

Went here for Valentine's Day dinner because: 1. I've been craving Indian food for quite some time now. 2. It's one of the few places that was open kinda late still. I saw pictures of the lunch buffet and it looked delicious as well. Owners were very nice and helpful with the menu. I showed him pictures from Yelp and he told what they were and what he thought of them. So good. We had the samosa which were perfect, garlic naan, and the non vegetarian Thali. The latter was a great sampling of dishes and an extreme bargain. It's enough for two! When we left, we mentioned we were traveling and the waiter gave me a free mango smoothie drink in a to-go cup. The service here was absolutely unmatched! We were treated like we were personal guests in someone's home. My friend and I went here and ordered takeout and sat at one of the tables while we waited. We changed our minds and decided to eat in the restaurant so we informed the woman at the counter. She immediately grabbed our food and began unpacking it for us at the table. We told her we could do it, but she insisted, stating that "we are her guests so she can serve us!" She even brought our dessert back to the kitchen to keep it warm until we were ready. My husband and I had a very tasty meal at Madras. The service was impeccable. The server had a steel trap for a brain... he took both of our orders without pen/paper (my worst nightmare) and everything came out exactly as ordered. I saw him do the same thing to a table of six... He's obviously a boss at his job. I greatly enjoyed my lamb vindaloo, which was surprisingly spicy. My husband's chicken hyderabadi was a bit disappointing, as the chicken and sauce wasn't very flavorful. The portion sizes are just right but definitely not anything generous. I wish there were a couple more pieces of lamb in my meal. The basmati rice on the side was delicious and the garlic naan was perfect. I'd definitely come back here for a meal but probably stick to their excellent vindaloo. read more

I came with my husband and a friend on a night when the Michigan basketball game made it impossible to get a seat in HopCat, and honestly, I don't know how I haven't been here before. From the street, Madras Masala and the cafe next door look like one restaurant. The cafe was closed, and we would have turned away, but our friend knew what was up. Is the $1 CHAI MONTH sign (which has been up for years now) for the cafe or for Madras Masala? We didn't order chai, so I may never know. What we did order was Gobi 65. This is an Indo-Chinese appetizer I've eaten at a few other Indian restaurants. From what I can tell, it's always cauliflower (Gobi) coated in a deep red batter and deep fried. Sometimes it comes dry. Sometimes it comes in a sauce. At Madras Masala, it was dry, which is my preference because it means the coating doesn't get soggy. It wasn't as heavily spiced as I would have liked, but it was still good. However, it also left me wanting a chutney or at least a lot of water to wash it down. This is where we get to my only major complaints of the night: My mango lassi was tiiiiiny (think McDonald's child size) and, after dropping a carafe of water on the table, our waiter never came back to refill any of our waters. (We drained the carafe pretty quickly, so I'm guessing I wasn't the only one who was thirsty, because the food was decidedly not spicy.) I got the lamb biryani medium, my husband got the butter chicken spicy, and our friend got chicken tikka masala spicy. We all three got an order of garlic naan each. The lamb biryani was noticeably spicier than the butter chicken. I'm not sure if the waiter got our orders a little mixed up, if the cream in the butter chicken cooled it down, or if it was something else. It wasn't a problem because I like spicy food and it wasn't anywhere near burn-your-face-off spicy, but that's something to watch out for if you're more sensitive to spice. Of the two chicken dishes, both were tasty, but the butter chicken was pretty sweet and a little light on the spices. If I were to order it, I'd go for extra spicy to try to balance out the sweetness. read more
