Finally checked this off my ever going 'want to try' list. We absolutely love Maemax! Finally able to visit the new location as Madison is a bit of a hike for us, but it was absolutely worth it. We made a reservation for a large party (18? 19? I lost count) for a boodle fight. And let me preface this by saying they were absolutely more than accommodating to us when we changed the reservation multiple times. Never got frustrated and worked with me each time I called back. Boodle fight was absolutely delicious and it is so much fun! If you're not familiar, it is a traditional Filipino feast where the food is laid out on banana leaves and you eat with your hands (Kamayan style). Everything was flavorful and we loved all of it. Found this place on tik tok and saw that do Empanadas on Thursday. And fortunately for me it was a Thursday and I got to try their empanadas. Omg they were made to order and soooo good! The flavors together was chefs kiss. I got my food Togo and it came with vinegar and he also gave me chili oil for some spice. Everybody was really nice and explained the menu well. Went here for lunch after my daughter kept telling me all about it - we had to go on a Thursday, because that was the only day they made their empanadas, and...well....she was right...the food is amazing, the staff are wonderful and friendly - and yes, Thursday's empanadas definitely hit the mark! We were in town for the day and came across Maemax for a late lunch. At first when we walked in we thought we were in the wrong spot because we walked in from the market side. There is a sign that shows you down the hall to the restaurant tho. As we came in we were greeted and seated right away. Being it was our first time, our server let us know there was a buffet option however it was nearing the end of the time for it. We went to check it out to see if it was anything we wanted. Since it was nearing end time and no refills were being made, we stuck to ordering from the menu. It's been so long since I last had Filipino food that I just wanted to order everything. For apps we ordered pork lumpia cause you always have to have lumpia in a Filipino restauran. I ordered the kare kare with pancit and sinigang. My husband ordered the bbq sticks with pancit and garlic fried rice. I don't know if it's because I've hadn't had it in a while but the kare kare was so good. Had the perfect ratio of peanut butter to it, not too thick or thin, and when combined with the bagoong gave the perfect saltiness. The pancit and sinigang were perfect sides although I do like my sinigang very sour. My husband really enjoyed his as he had no leftovers to take home. After eating we browsed the market and to my surprise I found a parrot fish! First I've seen here since moving to Tennessee! Luckily I came prepared and had a cooler to put it in for our drive home. We will definitely be coming here again when we are in the area. Next time we will try to come earlier to eat during buffet hours and if we so happen stay the weekend we definitely have to do karaoke night! read more

Overall: As a new Filipino-American to Nashville, I knew I had to make the drive out here. It's a great place to go for your Filipino food/snacks in TN, and I'm happy there's at least one spot out here. I went to both the restaurant (ordered to-go) & the market. * Market-wise, fairly small but I was happy to see some familiar items on the shelves that you can't otherwise pick up in TN. * Food-wise, the pork BBQ skewers were definitely the highlight of what I ordered! Authentic in taste and flavor. And you can't go wrong with the side of garlic rice and egg. I will say, the sisig and lumpia is not what I'm used to. We were missing the veggie lumpia, and the photos showed more food than we were given (missing an egg with the sisig, fresh veggies in the platter, and we weren't given our 2 veggie egg rolls). Came here to celebrate my friend's 60th birthday, and they were nice enough to block off a small area for her since there was going to be karaoke. They had a buffet for $26 per person, but heads up--this place doesn't serve alcohol, which was a bummer because I could've used some liquid courage for singing... lol. The owner is super nice and made sure we were taken care of. Turns out, they're from the same village as the birthday girl, so we definitely got some extra love! The restaurant is inside a market, which is super convenient if you want to shop while you're there. I skipped the buffet and went for the pork skewers, and wow--so good! I asked for a side of sriracha, and the flavors were on point. The pork had a light, sweet marinade, kinda like teriyaki, and I swear they must've used a mix of pork belly and tenderloin because it was so juicy. The food is all fresh and delicious, constantly replenished, and a wide selection to choose from. Fried fish, shrimp, lechon, adobo chicken, anything you'd want. The staff was very warm. I'm in Nashville for work (with FEMA) and was excited to see a Pilipino restaurant here because my wife is from the Philippines (Nueva Ecija). I ate dinner at this restaurant twice before now... the first time I had sisig (which was excellent) and the second time one of the bowls (which was okay). The service was very friendly both times, and I thought I'd found a good place to eat. Today, I was excited to share it with my wife, who arrived here last week. What a disappointing experience! My chicken inisal was so scrawny and the rice was cold. My wife's lechon kawali was absolutely inedible...rubbery with a yellow tint. She asked (in Tagalog) for it to be cooked more, because lechon kawali is supposed to be crunchy when it comes out of the fryer. The waitress whom my wife had called over accommodated her request, but the pork came back tasting like racquetballs: hard, overly chewy, and DRY. The manager was working at the table next to ours throughout our meal and never even acknowledged our existence while this was going on. The worst part of the experience was the checkout. Our original waiter rang up our bill, and my wife told him the kawali was not crispy. His response was, "Not crispy HOW?" How do you think, Einstein?!? Not crispy as in it doesn't crunch when you bite it. There aren't any other definitions possible. My wife told him it tasted like rubber. We didn't get an apology, offer of a discount (we didn't eat it), or even an acknowledgement from him that this was a problem. Unbelievable. Later I realized what had happened. Lechon kawali is supposed to be made with pork belly, which is a very fatty cut of meat. It's basically uncured bacon. As the chunks are deep fat fried, the visceral fat becomes crispy, which makes each chunk crunch when you bite it. The meat we had dis not have any visceral fat, but had a fat layer on the top. This means it wasn't pork belly but, rather, a cheaper cut like shoulder, butt, or, probably, loin. In short, we didn't get what we ordered...and ended up paying $40 for our trouble. Never again will either of us return. This place is terrible. I give it 6-12 more months of existence unless they stop cutting corners and deceiving their customers. read more

My friend brought us here to give us a taste of her country, the Philippines . Additionally, they have karaoke night. For starters, the service staff is extremely friendly. Personally, I ordered a plate of fried pork, which in my country of Mexico we call chicharrón. It was delicious. The order came with rice and it was such a good meal, that I'm making plans to return. I'm really thankful we found this little restaurant/grocery store! Favorite dishes: Lumpia, Ube icecream, Bistek and Chicken Adobo. They have full plates between $11-$15, or three $9.99 special which includes a main dish (protein), white rice and 2 sides such as lumpia and pancit. We also love using the grocery store for ramen, fresh produce, rice, soy sauce and other specialty items. In fact, a lot of what they serve in the restaurant is also available in their grocery store! First of all, I want to say that this review is only based on ordering Take Out. I'm 100% sure that the food is much better if you ate at the restaurant. But alas, we were in a hurry on a Wednesday afternoon, so we ordered food to go. We ordered Kare-kare (bummer it was not ox-tail, but tenderloin instead) but I was very disappointed that it didn't come with bagoong. I mean what is Kare-kare without the bagoong?! The lechon kawali looked and tasted more like Liempo, thinner slices instead of crunchy cubes of goodness. The pancit travelled well and was good. It did, at least, satisfy my craving for Filipino food. I will give this place another try and eat in on a lively Friday night.
