I live in East and was craving a donut and McGaugh's popped up. I think this donut shop may be one of my favorite donut shops of all time. I cannot believe how wonderful this place was. Family-owned and wonderful service. I can't recommend this place enough. We need to support small local businesses like this because they produce quality food. They also have a DRIVE-THRU! I have passed McGaugh's Donuts hundreds of times over the past few years and finally made it point to swing by on a Saturday afternoon post gym...because I earned myself a little treat! McGaugh's is your classic, no frills donut shop that is more nostalgic than fancy. The space is outfitted with old school decor, flooring and vibes. There are a few tables, a cooler, small condiment station and a counter, and that is enough! In addition to the public space, there is a view in to the kitchen, where all the donut magic occurs. Knowing what I know about this place, I was after the blueberry donuts and ended up with two of those, plus a classic chocolate glazed and an iced mocha. The blueberry glazed was the better of the two blueberry, which included a non-glazed. The non-glazed was a bit flat and also had a tinge of artificial flavoring. The classic donut with chocolate frosting was the standout for me. Light, airy, delicious and absolute perfection! While they are not known for their coffees or are technically a coffee house, I have to speak on the iced mocha...which was not great. This sounds really weird, but it tasted like how a cigarette smells. I know, really odd, but also spot on as I had someone else taste it and they said the same thing. The coffee was only $3, which I appreciated given the taste. So, it wasn't a total loss. Service was friendly, helpful and patient. Given my first visit, I took a few minutes to see what all was to offer. They also have a drive thru, which is convenient and useful now that I know what I would be after here. Pricing for 3 donuts and a coffee ended up around $8, which is pretty rad and rare, so I will take it! Overall, McGaugh's is a solid neighborhood and local donut spot! Glad to have finally popped in. After driving by this place everyday for a week, we decided to stop and try it out. Huge mistake because this place makes donuts like crack. We had a week left and returned for another dozen. I am positive if I lived here I would have diabetes from this place. The donuts are just incredible, all fresh and so many flavors. My first visit I got: Blueberry Cake which was incredible, glazed yeast, bear claw, Homer Strawberry Yeast, a lemon, a Boston, and a twist. They were all so incredibly delicious and I was on a sugar rush all day. Incredibly delicious. The second visit was a repeat with a few different. We also got donut holes that were amazing. The staff are super friendly and it was busy. I would definitely recommend and return, but warning, these donuts are addictive. read more

Apple fritters (10/10). Decent pricing. Unoriginal atmosphere. Lovely staff. As a donut fanatic, I had high hopes for McGaugh's donuts. I ordered blueberry cake donut, glazed donut, and an apple fritter. The blueberry tasted artificial. And I wasn't terribly wowed by the glazed donut. However!!! The Apple fritter was divine! I love donuts and always when trying a new spot go for two favorites: blueberry cake and chocolate topped cream donut. Together the two were only a bit more than $3 which was well priced for the freshness. I went through the driveway so can't speak on the inside of the shop. However, the woman at the drive through was very nice. Overall I'd head back if I were driving past, but wouldn't go out of my way to stop by again. The cream for me tasted almost like powdered sugar based and wasn't super whipped tasting. The blueberry tasted artificial unfortunately, but it was glazed to perfection and still fresh. read more

Found this gem and drove 50min to give it a go for a few donuts to spice things up - here's what we found! Ambiance / Location: Traditional standalone donut shop smelling of sugar and fryers and oooey gooey icing. Not much to look at from the street and pretty minimal inside but what more do you need to crush a box or two of delicious donuts! We were greeted very warmly by the owner and she quickly helped us choose our sugary delights! Food: Donuts were flakey, warm, soft and super tasty - you can tell these folks know what they are doing behind that counter. Lots of choices as you can see here in our diverse box o donuts which is great...just a bit shy on cherry or blueberry fritters - but hey those are super special and not everyone has them...... Price: Regular donuts avg price / specialty donuts are also avg for any other donut shop Summary: if you are in the area and happen to have a desire or a need to chomp down some really tasty fats and carbs then McGaughs will not disappoint... About a year ago, I decided to put Middle Tennessee's numerous donut shops to the test in an exhaustive quest to find the best in town! It took 14 months and 22 bakeries before I finally walked into McGaugh's Donuts over the weekend just off Briley Parkway in Madison. I probably should have come here first! In a nondescript humble building, the kind of unassuming place in which greatness is often found, my mind was sufficiently blown with the first taste! One bite in the car ride home and I knew I'd found Nashville's greatest donut! I prefer yeast donuts over cake donuts, and while Nashville has some very good examples of the former, there is something so complex and deeply yeasty with McGaugh's little masterpieces that sets them apart. Each donut is so impossibly soft and richly flavorful, more than any other donut in town, and consider that these donuts were the last few left on a Saturday afternoon before closing time! Imagine that feat of culinary impossibility! How good do they taste when they're freshly made in the morning?! The lemon filled version is a spectacular combination of rich lemon curd and soft, sugary donut. The maple iced is a beautifully soft donut with a wonderful maple frosting that is neither overpowering nor underwhelming. The vanilla icing with Fruity Pebbles was easily my second favorite. But the long cinnamon twist spanning the length of the entire box of half dozen donuts was the ultimate prize of the pack! I had gone in with the anticipation that this would be the prime pick at McGaugh's, and I was right. Just as soft as its smaller yeast companions with a delicate glaze and the essence of cinnamon, this is surely one of the best baked goods in Nashville! In a world in which great donuts are often indistinguishable from each other, McGaugh's has somehow found a way to distinguish themselves as the greatest in the city. Well done! read more

I made it to McGaugh on a weekday around 11. They had plenty on traditional donuts available and the glazed donuts I received where hot and fresh. The preparation area where the donuts are made is open to view with a plexiglass wall for separation, which I thought was cool. There were only a couple of people sitting on the inside and I remember it not smelling so fresh in there. I sat down and had a warm glazed donut before I ventured off for the rest of the day. The donut was light and sweet. The flavor was good, but not better than the donut shops I have ranked 5 stars. I ate the rest of my donuts over the next 24 hours and they held up nicely. McGaugh's strong point is the availability of many assorted donuts so late in the day. read more

Their blueberry cake donuts are superb and also is their classic glazed donuts. There is always a line when I stop in which means business is great and the service is bustling behind the counter during peak hours. Tried reaching out to the delivery service for help, but as predicted it's impossible to reach a human person. This place is 5-star certified! We got here pretty early and had the pick of the litter. All of the donuts were super fresh, light and pillowy. We got a dozen and then some; a few cake donuts, maple glaze, Oreo, bacon covered, eclairs and two large donuts that count as two donuts, in regards to a dozen. The apple fritters and the butterfly donuts are huge! The apple fritter was the size of small football and loaded with a chunky cinnamon apple filling. The butterfly donut was insanely soft and ate like monkey bread. You pull it apart and enjoy. The Oreo and bacon donuts were fantastic as well and the maple glazed cake donut was surprisingly light and airy. I've gone back and snacked on a few donut throughout the day and they still taste fresh and are soft to the touch. They talked about the best donut shops in each state, and this donut shop was listed as the number one donut shop in Tennessee. I do not think that's the case. This little shop is so inconspicuous that you'll miss it when you drive by. BUT, don't miss it, because everything is tasty! They open at 4:30am which is wonderful because most places aren't open that early. We were heading to work and wanted to bring in some treats for breakfast. First of all we asked what was recommended, and received the most sincere "everything" that almost made us try one of everything. Didn't go crazy though- a few hours in to an all day road trip we didn't want sugar comas. We got maple bacon glazed, raspberry filled, plain cake, Bavarian filled and Cinnamon Sugar cake (as shown). Definitely worth stopping for the BEST maple bacon glazed donut I've ever had. Not too sweet maple glaze that had a bit of saltiness to it that made me want to eat it with a spoon, plus super savory chunks of bacon that were liberally sprinkled all over the tops.
