We were a party of four with some severe dietary restrictions. We also had a really clear vision of what we wanted to eat. Lori made the planning process fun and efficient. Unlike every other company I called, Lori made me feel like the sky was the limit as far as what we could plan. I had mentioned some foods that she hadn't made before, and she explained that she would figure out how to get them made and not to worry. Lori arrived about a half hour after she said she would, so our first course came out about a half hour late. All was forgiven, as each course was positively exquisite. On top of the delicious food, Lori was pleasant to everyone, including babies, toddlers, and dogs. The icing on the cake is she left my kitchen spotless. By the end of the meal, I was ready to hire her as my personal chef, and I will unquestionably invite her back to cook in my kitchen.

Alas, I just got to visit this place and take a little tour. Apparently, Lawrence University students can retreat here when they want, which is fortunate for them. This is a sanctuary where people can find quiet and contemplation. The general public can also sign up to take classes and seminars, and spend the weekend at Bjorklunden in what they call a "thought-provoking vacation." Located on the grounds of Bjorklunden is Boyton Chapel, a small wooden structure built in a late 12th-century Norwegian style. If you get a chance to peek inside, you should -- it's beautiful, with biblical paintings on every wall and hand-carved wooden pews. When I visited, it was snowing and everything looked white and beautiful. I imagine the area is equally as beautiful when everything is green, but there's something about being here when things are cold and sparkling that make it extra special.

All of the staff that we encountered were also very friendly. I enjoyed that this property is walking distance to great coffee, breakfast and fabulous pierogies next door. We enjoyed mimosas, coffee, grapes and chocolate bread - it's bring your own. There is a head (bathroom) onboard. We sailed past the ship dry docks and buildings - treat to see the freighters up close! Captain Tom zig zagged through the bay all the way out to the lighthouse. Susan provided a nice narration of what we were passing. It was warm when we went so I was a tad hot - could be cold on other sails. They also offer a sunset cruise. You have run of the ship if you'd like. This is a great relaxing way to spend the morning or evening. They take a max of six guests - it was just us so extra sweet! I believe kids are welcome but double check.

The Hillside Waterfront Hotel is not really an hotel. More like a poorly run Airbnb'? The basic functions of even the most modest hotel are conspicuously absent. At check in there was no one there to greet us, answer questions, help us orient to the area or even help us with our luggage. When we reached out for help via their phone number they were unresponsive for an entire day and when we followed up at the end of day our host chose this moment to make it clear she had more important things to do than respond to guest questions. Perhaps this kind of attitude is typical of Ephraim, Wisconsin? Other things to know: We booked a suite which turned out not to be a suite. Any seasoned traveler will know the difference. They told us they were in very high demand at the height of the fall season but the hotel was empty but for one older couple. Makes sense now. Talking of that couple we only noticed them because the lady nearly fell down the stairs backwards as she struggled upstairs with her bags. Only hosts who don't care about their guests would allow that possibility. The plumbing is terrible. The sink didn't drain properly and the toilet blocked on first use (Not our fault! We know how to care for older plumbing) and of course there was no one on hand to help us The house smells of mold. Old houses sometimes do, but it this is especially bad. Our room was infested with biting bugs! In conclusion, Door County is a stunning area and not to be missed. The same cannot be said for the Hillside Waterfront 'Hotel'.
