Nice retro diner slotted into building. Loved the decor. Three of us stopped in for breakfast. Reviews seemed good. We weren't disappointed. Everything was great: fluffy pancakes, perfect eggs and bacon, nice ham -- all the usuals were spot on. Ingredients seem fresh. Coffee wasn't my favourite, but that's subjective. There was a supply delivery that morning so coffee refills were really slow. Maybe it wash just the server that day. Prices were a little on the high side. I mean it was all good but I wouldn't frequent this place if I was a regular. Location wasn't too far out of the new town area. I'd go there again if I was passing through. read more

I tried the "All in Poutine" and it was delicious! The waiters/staff were friendly and attentive. The decor is super cute, hipster-ish, unique. There's books and random trinkets on the wall. I went around Christmas time and they cleverly had a life-size Grinch plush sitting at a bar stool. My dad ordered the french dip sandwich with au jus. It comes with grilled onions on top, so delicious as well! Highly recommend this place. read more

Best Eggs Benedict I ever tasted! ....to those who wait... Food is fantastic, service is slow but best breakfast you can ask for comes to you at pace. We went hear twice while camping in the area. Once for breakfast and once for lunch. It has a nice homey atmosphere with lot's of knick knacks. My wife had corned beef hash and eggs. The corner beef hash was homemade - not mushed up congealed stuff from a can. It was very good. I had huevos rancheros with chorizo. Though it was not authentic huevos rancheros (i.e., not ranchera sauce, tortillas fritas), it was well made and delicious. The coffee was excellent as well. For lunch, my wife had a cob salad and I had a "California" club with fries. The salad was good and fresh. The sandwich had avocado and turkey. The fries were really good. One note, the portions are rather large. Too much for me to eat. But I'm glad we found this place. read more

Great ambience in this little diner. It was recommended to us by the local tourist info. I think they must send a lot of people there :) It was super busy - had to wait 40 min for brunch-that-rolled-into-lunch to arrive. The food was ok. The French toast egg soak was in dire need of cinnamon and the blueberry mix needed nutmeg. It looked like curdled blueberry yogurt. Not that appetizing. Something along the lines of a blueberry cobbler or pie filling would have worked better. The sausage patties that came with the big breakfast on the other hand, they were excellent! The coffee was good and hot and the wait staff very pleasant. The eggs benny were flying out of there so i assume they are good. Decent place. I'd go there again for breakfast. read more

Disappointed. I heard their breakfast was great and for some reason I decided to have a clubhouse, and it was absolutely awful. The pesto on the bread was nonexistent and the avocado totally overtake the sandwich. Plus the blue cheese dressing on the salad was nothing more than mayo and sage/some crap evergreen. The food at magpies dinner is definitely better than other breakfast spots in PR, however, it is not a perfect experience. The coffee is less than good, and some meals appear to have processed food elements. The decor is interesting, in a good way but the table mats are gross and tattered, not to mention only some tables feature these atrocities. Overall, good staff experience, even if they leave you alone most of the time. read more

Went there for lunch today with my wife, baby daughter, and elderly mom. The waitress with the short, light blonde hair asked the four of us to wait outside for a table. After five minutes of waiting, a couple showed up and walked in. The same waitress wiped down a table for four and immediately sat this couple at that table. The same waitress then wiped down two smaller tables, then wiped down another table for four and let us in. So this waitress left my baby daughter and my 90-year-old mother standing in the hot sun for ten minutes, sat down people who arrived five minutes after us, then finally sat us down. The two four-seat tables were vacant this whole time. I hope this waitress wasn't racially motivated, as my wife is of Asian descent and my daughter is half Asian, but she did treat us very badly and she shouldn't be in a job where she works around people. Love this place. The food is excellent. Nothing fancy, good, solid comfort food. Haven't found a dud on the menu. Excellent breakfast and equally good lunch. I wish I had been around when they did dinners, I'm sure dinner was as good. The staff are friendly, prompt and are really helpful. The building was a part of my childhood so I am a bit sentimental. Easily the best breakfast in Powell River. The only thing that would keep it from a 5 star is the wait. Expect to wait to be seated on the weekend and it takes a while for the food, but it is worth it. Just dont go there if your in any kind of hurry (same goes for PR in general!) I had the crab cakes benny the 2nd or 3rd time going there -and then every time thereafter. The crab cakes are homemade as is the hollandaise. read more

Can really only pull off breakfast. Bacon eggs pancakes are good. Had the cheesy corn beef hash and it was a plate of grease. Ceaser salad tasted so bad it I had to send it back because it tasted like chemicals. $10 for kids hamburgers that came with small amount of fries and a burger patty in a bun. Nothing on it. Not even ketchup or lettuce. Regular menu burgers come with a strange pesto mayo. Waited for over an hour for our breakfast once. While waiting our server sat at bar and was served food before us? No apologies while we waited with our 2 kids that long. ....really only like the basic eggs and bacon breakfast here. Love the hasbrowns and the homade sausage patties. read more
