Unless you are starving don't order the 1/2 all in as there is so much food. Don't forget to get their delicious homemade jam! This place was incredibly busy with people waiting in non stop line ups. Stopped in Thursday @1:00 pm before i had an appointment close by, Looked like a smaller version of a Dennys/Smittys type of diner, I was going to order a burger as the menu photos looked great, but upon asking the server if the burgers were fresh she said that they were frozen! Noooooooooooooo! why???? So i went for something close therefore i ordered the beef dip with fries and if any one knows me i added a side of gravy. The food arrived in a reasonable time and the fries + gravy were spot on! The beef dip sandwich was a disappointment though, no flavor at all, tasted like hospital food, very bland. It's a nice little diner right on the main road. They have numerous car license plates adorning the walls. There are 2 levels of seating and we were given a seat upstairs. Service was very good. Covid protocols were in place. Oddly enough, 'Plates' refers to the license variety, not the crockery kind. I had the Panko-encrusted cod, which came with coleslaw and a side salad (substituted for fries) with honey lime dressing. The cod was great the coleslaw a little wilty and the salad, save the mediocre tomatoes, was not bad. Just as I was lamenting my lack of dessert, the bill came along with a mint chocolate, just what the doctor ordered to satisfy my sugar craving without actually buying anything else. read more

Tried this place for breakfast, wasn't busy at all. After our order was taken it took almost 35 min there was only 2 other tables of two eating. So wait time seemed ridiculously slow. After we received our meals we never saw the server again. Seems the staff would sooner talk to each other then do their job. Breakfast was bland, greasy and not very good. Was my first and last breakfast there. Way better places for breakfast in Courtenay. Then had the unfortunate chance to dine here again. Not by my choice. Ordered a burger and wasn't any better then my breakfast experience. Server again was horrible. Plates is now off my list and will never be back. read more

In the middle of a really busy business trip nearby, we ate here just because it was close and had food in it. I didn't expect much because it was pretty pedestrian looking coming in. Food was ok and there was a reasonable selection. I liked that it wasn't a chain.. that is always points. We liked our meals, they weren't too expensive, and so you have it... however, I do regret not having dessert. They have pies and little cream filled yummy looking things.I didn't notice the cooler load of sugar and fat on the way in, and only saw it as I was already leaving.. darn, I hate missing dessert. read more

When we were in there were only about 2 or 3 waitstaff working and the place was busy. There were dirty dishes in busbins on the tables and tables waiting to be cleared for the entirety of our visit. Coffee was bitter and terrible. Food was good though. Overall- needs better coffee and more waitstaff. read more

The service was awful, but I think the waitress is serving people selectively and she appeared to be pretty nice to tables with more than one person. She kept saying that it was ok they were not very busy, as if they had been busy I would have been the bottom of the list of being given a refill. For the price of their coffee and breakfast, I would save your money. The food was not good, I would say awful, the hash browns were very dry and not tasty and I was almost going to ask for a glass of water, you really need one. I did not enjoy it. They had wifi but besides that it wasn't a good experience. I didn't get a chocolate mint with my bill, I actually didn't get a bill, I had to ask for that too. I had to ask for everything. I would never go back there again. I also did not like their automatic flush toilet, cause it didn't give you enough time to do your business before it flushed which was quiet startling the first time. But it seemed to fit the atmosphere quiet well. The waitress seemed to be looking over her shoulder to see if I was gone yet. I should have gone to Burger King. They have tv now, they are nicer to me, and they have a nicer breakfast I think. read more

Plates reminds me of a Denny's, but more eccentric. The service was pretty bad--my meal came several minutes after everyone else's and we had to ask repeatedly when we wanted coffee or water. I would not return to Plates. read more

Moved to Courtenay recently and haven't much of a chance to check out local restaraunts yet but today we finally got to treat ourselves yayy! I ordered the Sausage and Cheese skillet because I love hollandaise on pretty much anything. The 4 stars is because there was just enough hollandaise but not enough to make me taste it so maybe next time it will be saucier. There was a lot of the promised cheese though. Over all I can say the service was friendly and frequent and my coffee was refilled twice without any waving of arms. My 6-year-old son ate his entire breakfast and it was a reasonable portion for his size. My wife had the Cathy's Breakfast Sandwich which looked good and she had no complaints. This place kind of reminds me of The Pantry except the decor is cooler. They have a car theme with real old gas pumps, license plates and other memorabilia. The reason it reminds of The Pantry is because the 6 guys at the table next to us asked the waitress if they could just have a jug of coffee on their table instead of her having to come back and she was perfectly fine with that. Bathroom was clean except for some weird stains on the ceiling. We'll definitely go back as our breakfasts for 3 people with coffee, orange juice, and milk for the child came out to about $35. read more

I just had the buffet at plates . The buffet had everything you would expect at a sunday dinner at grandmas house. The service was good and the dishes were excellent. Especially the roast beef. Perfectly cooked and the server was excellent at carving it. My wife had the club house and she loved it. The kid had the buffet and went back for three helpings of mashed potatoes and gravy. This restaurant is extremely under rated. We've never had any thing but great service and great food here. read more
