Got the Hawaiian Shave Ice with ice cream. This was advertised as Hawaiian shave ice and it was absolutely not, it was a regular shaved ice or snow cone. The difference is how think the ice is shaved of a block of ice whereas a shaved ice is just ground up ice. They also put the ice cream on top instead of at the bottom. Don't know if the Hawaiian shave ice machine was down or just plain false advertising but it was a disappointment. read more

Went to go check out this place in Durango because we were craving a smoothie. We walked in and asked what sizes their smoothies were and the young girl was rude. She held up one of the cups in a sarcastic way like we were bugging her. Sucks we didn't get to try this place out. I just looked at her and laughed and told my husband let's go. First off, Joe the owner is the sweetest lady and deserves the world. She could be totally slammed and still be so sweet. She literally remade my drink so I could have glitter added to it. I love the shop! It's perfectly placed on my way in and out of town. They serve Hot, Iced, Boba, SMOOTHIES, and even Gelato! They have in-and-outdoor seating. Although it doesn't have many outlets, the back of the shop is fulled with magazines and cards. I personally bought a cute birthday card for a boyfriend. The ladies at the counter have always been friendly and efficient. I almost feel bad for forgetting my punch card each time. read more

When we walked in, the only server was making a milkshake and it took a very long time just to acknowledge that we were in there. Then a local walked in and cut in front of us... just because you go there every day doesn't mean you get to be rude. But the guy served her anyway. Magpies has all the trinkets of a newsstand but packed like a cafe, what a concept! We were on a week vacation in Durango and ran out of options to keep us entertained during the snow days, Magpies has board games, card games, you name it. To add to the small business magic, the Gelato is made in house and is INSANELY delish. We order the mint chocolate and it tasted like a melted Andes chocolate! The Red Bull smoothie intrigued me and I don't usually opt for the high sugar drink unless it's a boba but I went for it and sure enough, I'm hooked. I'm an avid (sugar free) Red Bull regularly but adding an assortment of sorbets for texture? *mind blown* it was like a caffeinated red/pink/purple starburst flavored smoothie. They just don't make newsstands like this anymore. I stopped in last Friday for my WSJ and NY Times fix and stayed for the magazines. After all, I had been in the wilderness for over a week and this inquiring mind needed to know! The only thing missing was a big cigar selection (for my box storage needs) and one of those Indian statues. Wandering through Durango with the pups on a hot day. Really only stopped in to grab a cold drink since there was a shady spot to park the dogs while I went in. So glad I did! Cute little deli that serves smoothies, pastries, breakfast and paninis with a little store attached. Decided to order the panini BLT to eat on the patio with the dogs. Magpie's has a great selection of reading material and a fantastic little coffee bar. I'm not 100% sure, but I think they even have ice cream. Their Chai tea is to die for! It looks super simple to make, even if you buy the same ingredients and make it at home, but it just doesn't taste the same. I'm pretty sure the people that work there are magic baristas - their beverages should be synonymous with orgasms... I mean, truly amazing coffee. read more

This place carries a lot of unique and hard to find birthday/all-occasion cards. It's especially catering to the off-beat humor cards which I'm always looking for. The magazine selection is very good and a fun place to stop and browse for things. The coffee shop side isn't half bad either. Being that there's no B&N/Borders in this town where you can spend hours catching up on the latest gossip mag or browse the latest book arrivals, this place has sufficient supplies of magazines that you can catch up on. Only problem is, this place is not so big that you can feel comfortable enough to hang out for long periods of time reading their magazine for free without feeling guilty. There is an outdoor patio you can hang out at & enjoy a scoop of ice cream or coffee that they also sell. However, I don't think you can take a magazine outside without buying it.
