We've been thinking of going to dune here for the longest time but managed to get there finally. The food was excellent served in good portions and very authentic, the service was attentive and although the ambience is basic, the place makes it up in the quality of the food served. Do not judge this "book by it's cover!" The restaurant was under some sort of physical issue, but it didn't effect the quality of the food served. The lamb and coat curry dishes, with their traditionally prepared rice, (with toasted cumin seed) were very good. So too the saag paneer. The paneer chunks, along with the lamb and goat were amply sized, and the paneer stood up to the cooking process. Which indicates both the quality of the cheese and the skill of the chef. Good food BUT they got rid of their buffet during covid and haven't brought it back yet. Will it ever come back? I don't know!!!! Also, it takes a while to make the food so don't be expecting a quick bite to eat. It's worth it but it's just a long wait. I would love to review the food, but unfortunately we have yet to be able to eat there. Three times in the last year we have found ourselves in the area around lunch time, and since Indian is our favorite, we went to try it. Each time I consulted their website to make sure they were open and that they had dine in. All three times their website said they were open and had dine-in service. This time it even said they had a lunch buffet. When we showed up, we were told that they were not offering dine in. We told the guy working there they needed to change their website, and his response was to "just call before" to make sure they had dine in. Um, no. We will not be trying again. First and only experience with this restaurant. Placed an order for pickup using their late 1990s era website. Showed up an hour and a half later to pick up said order, only to be told by the cook, who was all in a tizzy, that he hadn't started making our food yet. To be fair, he did say he was all alone in the kitchen, but the restaurant itself was empty (no indoor dining due to COVID). And maybe he had a ton of other orders to fill before I showed up, but there were no other cars in the lot, and during the 20 minutes I was on premises, not a single other soul entered or left. So we wasted two hours on a meal we never got to enjoy. And to add insult to injury, their refusal to use 21st technology (Seamless et al) to process orders, we still have no idea how long it will take to get our refund from whatever weirdy obscure service they use. Yes the place is very outdated and indoors dining is not open (due to covid) however, the owner is always friendly and welcoming. The food never disappoints! A few times I've been there and he's the only one doing everything! Very impressive! for which he usually takes longer to complete orders but it's understandable. I've been to a lot of Indian restaurants and I have to say this is my favorite for a few reasons: 1. The portions are ENORMOUS. Usually when I get Indian for takeout, I get about 1 pint of food per person with a quart or so of rice to share. At Maharaja, I get a quart of food per person with two huge containers of rice (probably about 2 quarts each) to share. This was for three people. The prices are also comparable to other Indian restaurants I've been to. 2. The food is delicious! Chana masala is my favorite Indian dish and I've had it at several Indian restaurants. I've even made it myself. The chana masala from Maharaja is my favorite by far. It's incredibly flavorful! Their pakoras are also delicious and of course come in giant portions. 3. The staff and owner are very friendly and attentive. When I've eaten here they always make sure our water is full and check in to see if we need anything. The atmosphere is pleasant with comfortable seating and music that brings India to the customer. If you're in the area and craving Indian food, I highly recommend you stop at Maharaja! read more

$16 for butter chicken and we thought it was be a large portion. Instead, it came in one of those pint containers. There was also barely any rice. For $16, it wasn't enough for one person. Well we decided to give them another chance; big mistake! horrible; it is sad to say that the best item I had was the diet Coke; the chicken tandoori was very salty; the garlic naan was not garlicky; the samosas were fair; the chicken curry had a funky taste; We had other items that are not worth mentioning; Here is the best part, the service still was abysmal as it was four years ago; poor service when the place was packed can be forgiven but when you are the only one in an empty restaurant, what's the excuse? There are a couple of things you should know about Maharaja. First, while my eating experience here was great, I've talked to plenty of people who really dislike it for a number of reasons (as fellow Yelp Reviewer Ronald S. notes, you might want to check out the filtered reviews if you want a negative perspective on this restaurant). Secondly, the people who own this place are either the same people as (or relatives of) those who own Wings Express in Storrs. So, any talk of competition between the two eateries is moot. I went to Maharaja back in late September one afternoon, just in time to catch the end of the lunch buffet. The food there was standard for what you would find in an Indian restaurant, but the price of $6.99 is truly unbeatable in this area of Connecticut. Not sure if the price has changed since I went. Other reviewers are correct in saying that the service is a bit sub-standard -- at least given my expectations for service for buffets. There was certainly enough food at the buffet at all times, but they did seem a bit slow at taking our plates away and refilling our water glasses. At the time that I went, it wasn't crowded, and the way the sunlight streamed through the window blinds into the room was actually quite nice. So, I have nothing to complain about regarding eating atmosphere. As I walked out, I had a chance to look at the made-to-order menu. SHEESH, those prices were expensive. In general, from what I've heard from other UConn students, the major complaint about this place is that if you order off the menu, the price you pay isn't worth it for the food you get. What is the point eating here when it's menu is basically identical to the wings express at Storrs? (So are the seasoning and everything else about the food, so they are probably owned by relatives or something like that) What's worse is that it's 30-40 % more expensive! Two things: no news is good news. People don't often review stuff unless there's an incentive to, either to build stats, get reward points and such, or because they had a sub-par experience. There are a few social creatures, especially on a website like Yelp, that might be the outliers to my award-winning study listed above. I joined Yelp several years ago for the reviews, mostly. I also like the color red. Secondly, I grew up mostly in Africa. There were numerous Indian restaurants and stores, what with being a major trading port with the Indians in days of old. To pay $60 for 2 entrees, and 2 orders of bhajia and samosas is one thing. Its a totally different thing to not be given the time of day by the "staff" "working" on this night. It is average food at best, compared even to the Indian deli in Providence Place that has the best samosas this side of Mount Kilimanjaro. I digress, to say the least. Poor service, average food, stellar (and not in a nice way) prices... you'd be crazy to NOT eat here. Maharaja, you are far from kingly, you are the parayar of Indian restaurants in New England. May the sun shine on people walking out of your restaurant with a dent in their wallet and a sour taste in the mouth. This is by far the best Indian food in the area. The servers made sure that the food we ordered was just the right level of spice that we love. There are many vegetarian options that we liked, but the best was the lamb biryani with the garlic naan. I would definitely come back and recommend to everyone. read more

It's still good. Some of it very good. The service is probably the only thing holding back another star. They try, they really do. But the wait staff seems to become easily distracted and you might sit for a while waiting for a water refill. Or your check at the end of the meal. The food is actually quite good, especially the fresh garlic naan (absolutely required for dipping in all the wonderful sauces). The goat dish I had on our recent visit was better than the first time, more tender. It was a different preparation, but I have to assume they use the same goat meat for all dishes, so maybe they've found a better supplier. The appetizer plate of assorted Indian goodies was a bright spot. Yelp doesn't allow half-stars, but Maharaja deserves closer to 4 than 3, but still...when the food is good but you leave feeling bummed because of the service, I'll vote to forewarn. Thier food is so so delicious. I love Indian and was so excited to find this place. It always seems like there's no one there but that's fine with me because it means I get food fast! Thier buffet varies each time and can sometimes be a tad lackluster but the price is just to good and you'll still leave happy and full. All the staff are really kind as well. I love this place! In seeing an Indian food restaurant was coming to this area, I was very excited. After the weekend it opened, a colleague--already prone to hyperbole--waxed poetic about it. Still, I wanted to try. Could it have been an answered prayer? Ethnic food int his area, aside from Chinese, is nearly nonexistent. A week and a half ago, I finally was able to give it a shot. Well, sadly, I hit the lunch buffet, and it was mediocre at best. I think there were about 8 selections, including naan and rice. The naan was cold, and the food was subpar--and also not fresh and/or just overcooked. Upon sitting, I'd asked about a menu but was told there was just the buffet. (How could this be?) i wanted spicey; I got, "meh." Service was slow; the staff was slow; the ambiance was no better than a Golden Corral. Really disappointing! I will probably try again as takeout one evening, but I have no great hopes for this place. Too bad. If they would improve some things that are easy fixes, they could be a breakout option. The service was good, but the overall quality of the food was terrible. The butter chicken and malai kofta, two very different sauce bases, tasted exactly the same. Both tasted like straight tomato sauce out from a can. Sour, lacking complete Indian taste. That was the worst part, because a few people in the group of 13 had never tried Indian food before and the owner was very pushy on getting us to leave as it was closing time, instead of being courteous of his customers, which did not really make any sense since it was 13 of us in the restaurant, and he had not had a single other customer since 7:30pm to closing.
