The worst part is that the online price is less than half of the price that Maharani charged her for the outfit. While searching for the perfect wedding and reception outfits for my upcoming wedding I visited every store in Edison as well as many others in other parts of NY and NJ. I initially had picked a lehenga from another establishment in Edison which turned out to be defective when it finally came time to be picked up. At this point, we had wasted too much time and money and were very skeptical to try another place. But I am so glad we did! At Maharani we had help from Ravi, Kalpana and Shashi. The customer service was amazing and they had a huge selection and variety of different types of outfits. I was able to pick out both a wedding and reception lehenga that I loved and was even able to customize the color and amount of work on each. Everyone was very attentive and made sure to clarify all details with me and even mentioned things that I hadn't even thought to clarify. I was happy with the expertise provided by Kalpana and Ravi regarding style adjustments to make my lehenga even more special. You can tell they really have been doing this for a long time. Although I had a great experience in store, I was still skeptical that I would receive both my lehengas in the 3 week span they promised especially since those 3 weeks included the holidays and we already felt so behind on our shopping. Luckily, we ended up getting a call that both lehengas were ready EARLY! We went in to try them on and each needed a few alterations which the tailor was able to get done within an hour! I was so happy with the way both of my outfits turned out that we even ended up picking out my fiance's sherwani and my sister's reception lehenga there, which were also perfect and delivered in a timely manner. Poor customer service and mannerisms towards the clientele. My in laws walked into look for outfits and was told not to touch the clothes unless you'll be buying nor you can try any outfits. Whereas the rest of the people were trying out the outfits as many as they would like. When approached, about a particular outfit, both the owner and the female employee started communicating in there own language. The price of an outfit started at $3500 and ended up less than $1000, so I'm curious about the profit margins and how they are cheating the people. Mind you my in laws don't belong to a south Asian community and do not understand the concept of bargaining. Overall a pretty bad experience for us. read more

Although I got my wedding and reception dresses here for my wedding, I can understand and see how it can be one of those hit or miss type of places. If you are seriously looking for an outfit for an event, I would keep these things in mind when visiting this place: 1.) Plan to be here a while. I was here 3 hours looking at dresses, trying them on and then finally purchasing them. They have a lot of inventory to look through and it will take you a while to get through them. 2.) They don't allow you to take pictures (as most places in Edison don't). So don't expect to. 3.) Make sure the sales person working with you gets a good read for your taste or find another one. I was lucky when I went and she quickly caught on to what I was looking for. 4.) Negotiate, Negotiate, Negotiate! They will start very high on the dresses. If you're a serious buyer and really want the outfit, keep at them. We walked out of the store twice, before being called back. I'm sure we still paid a lot of the dresses, but it was better than the first quote they gave us. 5.) Have plenty of cash on hand. They may say they take credit cards, but you'll win more favor from the owners and maybe even a better discount, by paying cash. Don't come here if you are larger than a US size 10. I'm a US size 12. The first time I visited the store, they looked me up and down and clearly dismissed me since they had nothing in my size. I inquired what sizes they carried and they clearly stated "standard size". The second time I visited (hoping the first time was a fluke), it was not much better. They clearly did not have anything that I could remotely try on. When looking at new styles we were told that we can customize anything however did not help us determine what work we would or would not like. This place is basically the Abercrombie and Fitch of Indian bridal wear. They have not interest in working with someone who is a little heavier, i.e., average American size. read more

I came here only for tailoring services. I had a heavily embroidered peplum shaped lehnga top that needed to be taken in significantly. I also wanted the shape altered so it was a straight top instead of the peplum. I honestly wasn't sure it could be altered in the ways I wanted because it seemed complicated. My experience at Maharani was in one word, easy. I came in, was assisted right away, my measurements were taken, and I was listened to! Aunty made suggestions of how the top would be more flattering on me, and told me they would have no problem doing it. I told her I needed it in 2 weeks, which she said was doable. I came back two weeks later, the top was ready and it fit perfectly! The design alterations were very clean and professional, and it looked great. My fiancé and I found the perfect wedding outfits from Maharani. After walking around stores in Iselin for 2 and a half days, we found Maharani to have one of the most unique wedding lehnga and sherwani. Ravi seems to have a well trained eye in knowing what looks good and what does not; this translated into completely color coordinated outfits between my fiance, myself, and groomsmen that were made with quality. Also important, our budget wasn't blown. It took a few weeks for Maharani to produce the outfits so in that time, I was quite worried about how the outfits would look when I went back to pick them up. As with any purchase in the wedding process, there is some stress and anxiety so communication is key with all parties. Having everything defined from the beginning will make it easier on yourself and everyone else involved. When placing our order, color modifications and alterations in design were noted with detail to avoid any miscommunication. So after a couple of weeks when my fiance and I went back to pick up our outfits, we were beyond happy! No alterations were needed. No defects in colors or materials. Everything exceeded our expectations. My sherwani fit perfectly and compliments the lehenga my fiancé got. Can't wait for our big day so we can wear them! read more

It's crazy how many people experienced the exact same storied dissatisfaction from the same place. Comments/Reviews from Ruth L, Tanya C. & Hardy K. all experienced the same situation. My now wife ordered a custom dress for our wedding ceremony from Maharani. They seemed very nice and accommodating to help close the sale. It was supposed to be ready 4 months later, but they hadn't contacted us until 3 months later when the dress was almost done. When we asked about the status of our outfits, they gave us an excuse that shipments were stuck in customs. So we didn't get the bridal dress until 2 weeks before our wedding date. In addition, the scarves/dupattas didn't arrive until 4 days after that. When my fiancé at the time did finally see the dress, she was really disappointed - the lengha looked cheaply made and not at all what she originally tried on, despite the money and customization! They altered part of it (bottom part) according to her specifications but completely changed the design and top of the dress and overall color/shade. Within the 4 months, we never got any communication from them other than the fact that the dress was delayed. They tried to convince my bride that the dress still looked amazing. However, admitting that they made some mistakes when we finally came to try it on at the store. My wife tried her best to accept the dress, but when the dupattas came a few days later it was the final straw. The dupatta's were underwhelming and not what was promised. (Btw, we have pictures to prove all of this). They promised us 24 to 48hrs alteration turnarounds and etc. Why didn't they offer that when they realized the dress was made incorrectly? By the time they said they would totally revamp the dress we were a few days from our wedding. How would a dress that took 3 to 4 months to make, be turned around in 24 to 48hrs? What kind of quality alterations were they promising? Where was the quality control by the owner when it was being made in India and how did he not notice that huge error(s)? Why would they try to sell us on an incorrectly made dress? All of this does not add up? We would have to eventually just accept the dress regardless of whatever alterations we would be subject to. Again, just another tactic to push us to accept the incorrectly made dress. They made it sound like it was extra special treatment if they could turn this dress back into what it was supposed to be. They were probably going to frankenstein the model dress they sold us on, and swap out the top from the model dress, and stitch the bottom of the dress they created to it. There was no way they were going to do that from scratch. Why else would they have gotten it done in India in the first place? Basically no responsibility and no trying to please their customer. We got extremely frustrated that they were not going refund us. My wife was so upset at the situation because she was not getting the dress that she originally ordered. She was crying and refused to wear the dress to our wedding. She said that she would be mortified to wear something that she did not order or felt comfortable in. Their excuse was that no one would notice. LOL! That's customer service for you at Maharani Fashions (no one will notice except you). No one will notice but the one that is wearing it. Are you kidding me? This is not ok! I strongly recommend STAYING AWAY from Maharani! They will flatter you endlessly until they make the sale, to find out the finished product is not what you expected, nor do they take responsibility for it. Don't waste your money here!! There are plenty of stores in Jackson Heights, if you are from NYC that will not rip you off like this and treat you with respect. No need to trek all the way to New Jersey for this kind of service. Almost 1 year later I still get mad when I see this place. I wish I had read the reviews here instead of going by the word of a family friend re: this place. Extremely overpriced clothing (who cares if he offers custom sizing)... and terrible customer service! My wedding was a year ago and I still get so upset thinking about how much money this establishment made from my family and I. STAY AWAY from this place!!!! I am getting married on July 15th and I went to this place to find my bridemaid's sarees. The first time you go there they attend to with good customer service only to get you in the door. After, they are the worst. I went to them well over a year in advance for 8 outfits, brought all my girls to get fitted and paid full in advance (DO NOT MAKE THIS MISTAKE). After they have your money they don't care about what you need. They were 3 weeks late with the first fitting of the sarees, the blouses were hideous and needed to be taken in, they lost 2 of my girls measurements and then tried to be nasty about it. I was looking for readymade anarkalis and Nehru collar suits this weekend. I had a friend who recommended this store so I was disappointed to walk in and find so little that interested me. Their selection just wasn't that great. It is clear that they have a large showroom with lots of stuff, so maybe their lehengas or saris or kurta pajamas or sherwanis are better, but I wasn't so impressed with the anarkalis or the men's suits. The quality was not great, and the taste was lacking. The prices were pretty high, but I'm sure they would bargain with you if you were interested in some of their stuff. I would probably stop by again if I was in the area and needed to do some Indian shopping, but I wouldn't have high hopes of finding something awesome. read more

I ordered a custom lengha for my wedding ceremony from Maharani. I should have picked up on the signs when the owner was being very rude to another customer (and another was yelling at him for being rude to her and her sister). They seemed very nice and accommodating when I was shopping, but then got very pushy to make the sale, and of course, in cash no less ($2K). It was supposed to be ready three months later, but they hadn't contacted me, after 3 mos. When I asked about the status of my outfit, they gave me an excuse that shipments were arriving late because of the Mother's Day holiday (??). So I didn't get it until 2 weeks after they said it would be ready. When I did finally see the dress, I was bitterly disappointed - the lengha looked cheaply made and not at all what I originally tried on, despite the money and customization! They altered it but it looked terrible. I complained it was still ill-fitting (the blouse was loose and slouching in the back). They said that's how it is supposed to look, it's because I picked a longer-style blouse, it's because I lost weight (since I ordered it 7 months earlier, not since alterations started) - basically no responsibility and no trying to please their customer. I got extremely frustrated that they were not going to fix it, and were pushing back on me as excuses, with each round of alterations making it look even worse. I was so upset afterwards that I was crying and refused to wear this lengha to my wedding - I would be mortified to wear something that looked so cheap. Hoping for the best, I took it to another tailor to fix it, and she reiterated that they didn't do it right (things were not centered, hooks were not where they should be, the lining was too short and could be seen through the sheer net overlay, etc).It wasn't worth the extra money to get it all altered (I preferred to throw it in the garbage). After spending time and money trying to fix it, it still looked horrible and I was embarrassed at the thought of wearing this as my wedding dress. I strongly recommend STAYING AWAY from Maharani! So we go to oak tree rd. We begin our wedding shopping at Maharani Fashions. I wasn't pleased with the service or this shop. And I am not surprise to see other reviewers online don't like this store too. They have a lot stock but nothing great and most of the outfits were of old designs. The sales people were really pushy and even tried dropping the price even though I didn't like the outfit. It seems to me that they raised the price of the outfits to give you a big discount. Most of store outfits are made with poor material, with alot of tacky beading, and they had this weird asymmetrical pattern that looked really tacky. The store wraps most of bridal clothes so when they take them out the beading is looking old and worn out. Some guy even tried advising us to order something we see in his store in a different color as he didn't have my size or the color I wanted. I am so happy we didn't buy from this store and after reading other reviews online I am convinced I was right. My friend also told me how she had terrible experience with this store. Unfortunately she did purchase from this store not knowing, its not a trustworthy store. She ordered a bridesmaid outfit in a teal green for another wedding. When she got the call to come pick up her dress, she was disappointed and horrified as the outfit did not fit and was not the color she selected. They have quite a few nice pieces and tell you B.S, about how they specifically custom make each outfit for you, because their factory is in India. We flew in form N.C. and spent over 20K for the bride, grooms, and many of the other families outfits. They told us everything would be ready in Dec, so after calling to make sure it was ready, booked out tickets and flew there. Nothing fit right, and some of the pieces were still in India! We were a little more than pissed. They said they would fix it and to come back in Jan otherwise they would mail it to us. Well we werent willing to take the chance, and after flying back in Jan, only half the stuff fit! Of course no compensation for flying in, and the added stress. Wedding in the family? where do you go? EDISON.....I accidentally happened to walk into Maharani Fashions (Oak tree rd.) and was pleasantly surprised with the huge collection. I was looking for something specific for my sister's wedding for the ceremony and reception. Ravi Verma, the store owner, showed me a lot of designs and colors but not to my specifications. However, he was ready to customize the reception outfit to my liking. At first, I was hesitant in doing so as we did not know how the final product was going to turn out, but he surprised me with the final product. I must say it was not a lot of customization, but the fitting was one I would not have gotten off the shelf. For the ceremony, he showed me a unique piece that again did not need much customization, but is in the process of fitting it per my liking. The only downside with him is that you need to pay the whole amount upfront for made to order outfits, even to get designed swatches. The upside with the store is that they are patient and ready to show you a range of designs and creations. And the quality of the outfits is great. My sister on the other hand is getting her reception outfit fully customized, from the color to the design. We are still waiting on the final product, but his wife Shashi provided some great design tips that we are looking forward to. They gave us their time which really helps in the decision process. The two ladies at the store; Kalpna and Priti were helpful as well. The store also has a great collection for men and he is ever ready to customize those as well. I would say the store is a bit expensive, but I did get my money's worth. Can't wait for my sister's lehenga. Will post my comment in a couple of weeks. I walked in a little over two weeks before having to attend a wedding and needed a custom lehenga. The staff were incredibly helpful and pulled multiple options for me to choose from. When I picked the lehenga I wanted it was time to take my measurements for the customizations as I'm a hijabi and needed to cover a lot more than how the sample was. They were so accommodating and allowed for the long sleeves the lifted neckline in both the front and the back and even brought the top length all the way down to above my hips. I was even able to switch from a net dupatta to a silk dupatta. It was everything I needed and I couldn't be happier! I was told my order would be in by 12/27 but got the call saying it came in early and had been delivered by 12/20. No other store would have been able to make me a custom lehenga and have it come in so quickly. I've received so many compliments on this outfit, especially how I was able to make it hijabi friendly. I've already recommended this shop to everyone and I know I'll definitely be going back for my next event!!! read more

Not only did he make it his mission to have my lengha look amazing, but he ensured me that he would have it ready by September 28th. It was ready even earlier than that and i was truly happy with the work. He listened to the customizations and modifications I made to the blouse piece, the color, etc. the dress was completely new and incredible looking. I'd definitely recommend this store! read more

My wedding is in August. We went to Maharani in January. We ended up purchasing all three of my wedding outfits, plus the grooms outfits, both of our father's outfits, and jewelry. We were told that everything would be ready at the end of April. When we went there in April, we only received half of the items. All of my outfits were there, so I was able to try them on. All of the blouses needed to be fixed, so they took measurements and assured me they would fix them and send everything (including the missing items) out the following week. About 3 weeks later I finally received the package. I tried on the blouses, and they were worse than before. Nothing fit right, and it was not due to loosing weight. I ended up having to take them to a local tailor and paying an extra of $450. These people are unreliable and unprofessional. Do not trust them. Very disappointed. read more

The good the bad and the ugly I thought was reserved just for movie titles, however Maharani takes this to a new level. I'll start with the good as that is the easiest and shortest aspect to comment on. The have an enormous selection. Now for the rest of the bad and ugly. The bad is the fact that they can't stick to any dates they commit to and they always will blame you (the customer) as why there is a delay or why they delivered the incorrect item. They had the gall to tell my fiance that she was too picky (on items they agreed on) and the reason that the lengha she was getting was too short because she had lost weight!!! I didnt realize that height was proportional to weight gain, and if anything losing weight would make things fall lower not increase in height. That was a direct quote and this was the Saturday before our wedding. We went back and forth to their store probably 10-15 times after we had chosen our clothes only to be disappointed time and time again with the delivery and the outcome of what they had promised. I actually got into a yelling match in the middle of the store with the owner about my frustration. At a time when more stress is the last thing you need they only contributed angst. I would not recommend them unless you have unlimited patience and no deadlines. read more

If I could give a zero star, I would. Over the past YEAR, we had put in an order for bridesmaids dresses to be custom made that was outrageously overpriced, however, we thought they would do a great job. That was NOT the case. We had given them a picture of we wanted the outfits to look like but they had made their own blouse in a disgusting color and cheap material. As they are bridesmaids outfits, they should all look the same however they mare each blouse completely different making us come in over 4 times for each bridesmaid to changes because either the measurement they took was wrong or they didnt put parts of the blouse together. The store owner continued to blame us and claim their measurements were completely correct, however, the lengha skirts were 5 inchs too wide and the blouses were huge as well. When we were complaining to the owner, he began to YELL at us.. Forget about customer satisfaction, the employees and owner were flat out unexcusable.
