You never know quite what you are going to get and it can be frustrating at times. That said, I am happy to report that this clinic has always been consistently good. Everyone is always friendly from the time you walk in until the time you leave. Also, your chances of getting in early are pretty good here because they seem to be a well-oiled machine. Moreover, I don't feel rushed either...they just seem to have their groove on. The exams are thorough and the doctor is very nice. The tech (Dave) that checks you in is full of information and tells you like it is...I like that. Even when he used to work in the eyeglasses area you could count on him to be straight with you. Speaking of the eyeglasses department, there are a few new ladies in there that are ready to assist with your selection. They haven't been there that long and are learning how the VA does things, so be patient. I really like that, although limited, you have a little selection of nice glasses to choose from with the contracted company the VA uses. While I'm at it, the company that has the contract at the VA also allows you to purchase more glasses if you want. Plus, you can visit their website for a bigger selection. I also learned that although only the veterans can be seen at this clinic, dependents can come to be fitted for eyeglasses for purchase as well...just a nice option to have. The ladies at the front desk are always friendly when checking in/out. In addition, they always help us out any way they can for scheduling issues for appointments...we appreciate that. As for the clinic itself...there is a large waiting area with TVs. This is good since you may have to have a driver if your eyes are dilated and someone needs to wait on you. There are huge restrooms and drinking fountains as well. There is a large parking lot with ample spaces including handicapped parking. Sometimes we get a choice to use the actual VA clinic or be seen at a local clinic for an eye exam. I have done both and decided a few years back to just give it a go when given the option...and I am so glad I did. I highly recommend this clinic to any vet wanting to get an eye exam.

He explained how my eyes work, why I might be having the issues I'm having, gave me solid suggestions to help my issues, and gave me an excellent prescription. Where other doctors have recently told me I'd want Progressive lenses, Dr. Johnson explained why I didn't need them YET, and benchmarks of when I would need them (including vision tests for myself and career changes). He encouraged me to get bifocals if I felt I needed them, but also explained where I'd see better with staying in single lenses. I was duly impressed with Dr. Johnson and would not hesitate to recommend him to anyone. Also, his office staff was personable and helpful. I dealt with two ladies, and one was exceptional in helping me find just the right frames, but not overselling. It is refreshing to find a business like this.

As an example: a number of years ago, I walked into his former office because I had mysteriously lost central vision in one of my eyes. I had to walk to his office because my sight was shaky at best. Within 5 minutes of his examining me, he left the examining room briefly, returned and said, "You are coming with me." He escorted me to his car, drove me to a retinal specialist who returned to his office after hours, and made possible for me to have my eyes thoroughly examined. I was diagnosed with WMD, and Dr. Johnson's quick work saved my sight. The Eyecare Express team is kind and very responsive to requests. We cannot imagine being patients at any other place in Gainesville.

I arrived early and got checked in and info/ tests done by 10:15. I did not see the doctor until after 11:35. It was almost noon when I was checked out. As a health care provider , I know things come up. But at least notify patient of extended wait times and offer another appointment if wait is too long. I think things were just overbooked to increase profits, and that is not an excuse .

Just got back to Gainesville and called them because my brother and sister Inlaw use them. They had an opening the next day. I show up and the tech to me back and did all kind of testing. What was nice is that I didn't feel rushed. She was very patient and thorough. I felt well cared for instead of rushed like normal at other doctors. I've been to lately. after everything was done and the eye doctor came in and went over the results and has been going back to see another eye doctor because of some of the results three people I dealt with a front desk, the tech, and the eye doctor were all great people.
