Mai Café is a cozy, home-y restaurant that serves both Thai and American cuisine. I ordered the vegetable curry, which was the perfect mix of spicy, tangy, and sweet. It was a good curry, but nothing differentiated it from any other good Thai curry I've had. The authentic Thai interior provided a good dining environment. The service was great! Our waitress was very sweet, and our food came out in record time; probably about 5-7 minutes. Verdict: I would totally come back here to try their other stuff. Did take out here a few times. Mango sticky rice was on point. However, green curry was too fishy. If you not a fan of the fish sauce, specifically ask them to skip the fish sauce. Went here another time and got drunken noodles which were so-so (a little spicier would be nicer) and a chicken dish, but the chicken was over-cooked. read more

The best veggie Pad Thai in the city. I order it every time I visit, which has been once a week lately. They make each plate fresh to order. You can taste the care that goes into it from your 1st bite to your last:) Mai's is located in the heart of Wortley Village on the main drag. It is fairly small and is busy often. Great Thai food, possibly the best in the city. I find it a bit strange that they offer a large variety of Canadian/American cuisine along with normal Thai staples. It seems like they would do better to just focus on the Thai food that 99% of people will order anyway. They also close relatively early, making grabbing dinner here kind of tricky and the service is not amazing. I think they'd prefer if everyone just got Take-Out. The Thai food itself is really good, tasty curries and nothing is overly oily or salted. Ask for your dish to be made 'spicy' and they will deliver! I would come here a lot more if they were open just a bit later. read more

Great little Wortley gem for fresh authentic Thai food! I've ordered Mai's takeout several times now and it has been consistently fast, fresh and tasty. Mai takes the orders via phone and has a casual charm. Wait time is usually about 15 min from order. If she's swamped though, she's good about giving you a time estimate and calling you when the order is ready. I've ordered the deep fried spring rolls (4), papaya salad, chicken pad thai (which appears on her menu to include shrimp and tofu, but when I asked for chicken only she was happy to accommodate) & drunken noodle. Some Thai food places I find myself questioning the freshness of ingredients (chicken esp.), but here the freshness is apparent. Honestly all dishes I've ordered are great, but I'm in love with the papaya salad (think...coleslaw with a twist. Vinegar base and less sweet than a mango salad.) Portions are large and you'll be sure to have leftovers for lunch! read more

Mai used to be in Byron, but is now cozily ensconced in a former hair salon in Wortley Village between Bruce St. and Craig St (ignore the location on Google maps; you'll end up too far south on Wortley). Thai food has to be fresh, and this place pulls it off. The menu offers western options, as well, but why get food that you can get everywhere else? The Thai food is the draw here. They serve breakfast, lunch and dinner. The décor is not fancy. There is a huge television behind the bar playing what I'll assume are Thai singers. Not sure why the songs need to be subtitled; I'm thinking that you either know Thai or you don't. If you don't, subtitles are unlikely to help. I would recommend that they turn the lights down for dinner, as it would improve the atmosphere. Seating options include tables or banquettes. It's a small resto, seating perhaps thirty at most. No garish wall decorations, but there is art for sale. Most of the common Thai dishes are represented. My guest had the Pad Thai ($11) and pronounced it okay. My cashew chicken ($12) was very good, albeit light on the cashews (I counted four in total). We tried the fresh rolls ($5) and the spring rolls ($4). Both quite good. The sauce for the spring rolls was more hoisin, less nam prik. Portion sizes are reasonable. Fast service. We ordered and were served in no time, but other people who had arrived before us were still there when we left, so it seems that they allow the diner to dictate the pace of the meal. I will definitely return. It's the type of place where everyone will find something suitable. read more

This was disappointing. Went there a day earlier and was told there was a 45 min wait for take out so I'd left. Went back today. Fortunately only 15 today. Got the Pad Thai. Coconut Shrimp, Cashew Chicken and Tom Yum Soup. The Tom Yum was overly salted. The tofu might've been perfectly cut pieces of rubber thrown in. The coconut shrimp was actually quite nice. But then the main dishes of cashew chicken and pad thai. The pad thai was super oily, as was the cashew chicken. It didn't stop there. The chicken and shrimps were overdone to a point that they could've been pieces of cardboard. I had lunch here yesterday with s friend and I we were both impressed , It has a Canadian traditional menu But the Asian selection was great as that's what we ordered Curry Chicken Drunken noodles was great And a beef dish We asked for hot spiced up on all 3 dishes and she delivered Well Dishes also came with a fine of white rice The serving bowls were beautiful , not just some simple white dish ! Mai's Café a.k.a. "Breakfast, Lunch, and Dinner" is my home-away-from-home neighborhood restaurant. It's is one of few places where I feel I can go and eat a meal there completely by myself. Why? The staff are so friendly and engaging you'd think you went to eat at your relative's house. The food? Likewise very homey and passionate cooking goes on in their kitchen. Their Pad Thai is the best I've had in London thus far! And their $4.95 breakfast is priced right and good quality (the toast is homemade bread). Mai is exceptionally warm and friendly and her sister Kay who runs the floor is sassy and very funny! Love them and their place! What a great addition to the neighborhood! read more

I've been here once before for breakfast but I waited till I came back to try their Thai food before I wrote a review. I liked this place a lot. It's owned by a Thai lady who employees her sister (and others). One of her sisters works in the kitchen and the other one is at the front. I only talked to the one at the front but she was very friendly and we had a nice little chat. Which was the main reason I came back to try their Thai food. The breakfast is nothing too fancy and is pretty standard American breakfast. The best part of breakfast is really the prices, it's very inexpensive. I haven't eaten much in london but I've heard it's not the greatest city for food (mostly by people comparing it to Toronto or windsor) but I've got to say the Thai food was pretty good, definetly not the best I've had but I was happy. We ended up getting a green Curry and veggie pad thai. Both were cooked well and flavourful. I only wish the pad thai was a little less dry. Other than that I'd probably go back again read more

This cozy little establishment settled in the quaint "small town feeling" area of downtown London is a real treat. I've had the green curry here five times in the last few months. While I've tried a few other things on their menu like the pad Thai, basil beef and fried rice (best fried rice in the city) I keep coming back to the fresh and delicious curry they provide. Four of us were looking for a place for an early dinner yesterday. We used Yelp to find this restaurant that was nearby. The server was excellent and the menu choices were very good. Delicious find !!! My wife and I stopped in on a whim for lunch. The place is bright , clean and cosy all at the same time. Mia, the owner, greeted us warmly and we immediately felt right at home. We had the Tom Yum soup, spring rolls with peanut sauce and deep fried won tons followed by garlic shrimp as the main course. Everything was hot, fresh and perfectly cooked. This was a pleasantly suprising find!.Definitely a little hidden gem! Worth the drive for sure! Mai is a lovely host! Always very welcoming! .Has a very homey feel! You can definitely tell the food is so fresh! My wife loves their drunkin chicken and I love trying a new dish each! Has never disappointed! Have even on occasion ordered and brought home! . We've ordered takeout from here on a number of occasions. The pad thai is quite good and has a nice amount of fresh vegetables and fresh herbs, unlike some of the lower-end offerings in town. The curries are flavourful, if on the watery side sometimes. Food-wise, i would give this place four stars. Service is normally quite friendly, although one time I went to pickup a takeout order and someone (probably a manager or owner, but I am not sure) was berating the server in front of me for printing my receipt (something about how for takeout orders you don't need to bother, and it costs money to do so). The way she was going about it seemed really belittling to the server and it was extremely awkward for me. I've had an uneasy feeling about this place since then, although I have returned because the food is quite good. read more

Okay, now that I have tried more things on the menu here I am updating my review. Everything I have tried here is fantastic (I have only tried Thai offerings though, so I can't comment on the breakfast menu or other lunch options), and Mai is so friendly and welcoming and knows her regulars by name. There is no vegetarian option for green curry listed on the menu but she happily made a veggie one for me. Now I will be torn between red vs. green curry when I come here because they were both so good! I wouldn't hesitate to say this is the best Thai food I've tried in London. read more

Had a wonderful dinner here last week. The food was excellent. We tried the drunken noodles and the pad thai and an appetizer and definitely some of the best thai food I have had in the city. My medium heat level was killer spicy for me but that is my own stupidity for thinking I could handle it. The hostess/server was extremely nice and since we were the only ones left in the restaurant at the end of the night we had a great talk about Thailand and the food with her. The only con was that she was the only one on the floor and it was very busy at times so it took a while to get some things like water throughout the meal. I would absolutely come back though. Excellent take out food! We got the drunken noodles, Thai basil chicken, papaya salad, and Thai eggplant. Everything was delicious! The noodles were yummy without feeling too heavy or unhealthy. The meat was obviously fresh, and the vegetables were deliciously crunchy. The sauces tasted freshly made with not too much oil. The staff was very kind and friendly when we arrived right before they closed to pick up our meal! Came out to about $42 plus tip for a very generous meal for two with leftovers that still tasted great hours later. Definitely could have fed three people. read more

I went here for breakfast. Had a Thai omelette. It was very good. I believe my husband had a traditional breakfast of eggs and bacon. Fresh, intriguing decorating. Later, we heard rumours we had missed the best thing they sold: pancakes. So pretty sure pancakes will be a goal next time. read more

Mai is very nice. The service is good no question about it. The food however is sub par, and compared to most restaurants like this, the portions at Mai's are about half that of other places like Thuan Kieu. The taste itself was very bland. I will return to try something else possibly. read more

The restaurant was empty when I went. I was meeting three others. She came out eventually and gave me a menu. I had to go back into the kitchen practically and ask for a decaf coffee and to my annoyance they didn't have any or else she just didn't want to be bothered making it. What restaurant serving breakfast doesn't serve decaf??? My other friends joined me and yet again I had to go and ask for service!! The food was good and very affordable but the service was awful and our server had a very bad attitude. Will never go back unfortunately! read more
