Several things go into this review. 1. Time of restaurant operating hours is not the same on the door and on the website. The door had a hand written sign they were open until 8 while website says 8:45. 2. Ordered Pork Pad Thai which was correctly done and Shrimp Pad Thai. Didn't get shrimp, i think we got squid which was tasteless. 3. Pricing. The cost of the two meals was over $45. Basic Pad Thai is $18.00 to add pork $1.50 more. Add shrimp add $6.00 more. 4. Amount of added protein was almost negligible. I don't understand how this place stays open. The hours continually change, parking lot looks empty and the food has gone downhill. The place is a small freestanding building with more charm than the surrounding shopping malls, albeit with a somewhat cramped parking area encircling it. The menu includes a range of typical dishes, missing one or two of my favorites but still with plenty of choice. Getting fried tofu as an appetizer resulted in tofu triangles with a sweet chili sauce and a nice salad accompaniment with one or two dodgy leaves. My cashew-based entree had a good variety of vegetables and some burn at the Thai hot level, but left an off taste in my mouth. Ordering brown rice was costly, but their purple-looking result was appealing. A Thai iced tea was more sweet than tea. It seemed like a family-run place and service was not speedy. I could imagine them doing better with a different order. There were some positives but it wasn't up there with the best I've had in town. read more

This was my first time trying Mai thai and it was absolutely amazing. I've heard good things about it before but finally I went because a good friend recommended it. He recommended getting garlic chicken, yellow curry which were both 10/10 so flavorful! As well as the pad see ew which was also so good! It's such a cute place and service was good. We got the Thai tea to drink and I've never had it before other than thai boba which isn't as authentic so I don't know what to compare it to. But it was so good I just wish it was a little more milk so it wasn't so sweet. read more

Wow! A friend recommend that I try this place because she said that the Chicken Pad Thai is the best thing that she'd ever eaten. It was a beautiful Tuesday at lunchtime and I sat outside. The service was good and I definitely was not disappointed in the Pad Thai, it was the best that I've ever had! I ordered mine with scrambled egg on top and it was a little bit of heaven. I ordered it "medium" spicy and it didn't have much heat at all. Next time I might order it "hot" but I could really taste the flavors better without the heat. Best Thai restaurant in Lexington. The Thai rolls are delicious. The Pad Thai here is somewhat unique. I'm not sure how it's cooked but it seems light on tamarind with a little something else added. Every other Thai restaurant in Lexington has Pad Thai loaded with tamarind. But still, my favorite by far is the Pad See Ew. Absolutely delicious, noodles are cooked to perfection, and it has the perfect amount of egg. I like to order mine topped with Sea scallops. The only downside is the times it's open. Closes at 7pm on weekdays and on the weekends it's closed. This place has always been on my shortlist of best family owned restaurants in Lexington. read more

I always order beef pad Thai in almost all of Thai restaurants and this one doesn't disappoint. It was the perfect portion for lunch and the meat to noodle ratio was good. I do wish there were more brightness to the dish, like more fresh sprouts, cilantro, more roasted peanuts or even a lime wedge. Other than that the dish was pretty complete. The spring rolls were different. Not sure what was inside but it isn't your typical beef or pork spring rolls. The dip of the spring rolls were good though. The soup was nothing to be excited about but still good for the palette. Over all my experience was great, the service was good and the food was delicious. The food here is delicious. Pad Thai is perfection. The restaurant is small but cozy and clean. The parking is weird but not horrible. The servers are very nice, but seem to be very young and inexperienced . Make sure you get what you need when your food is brought out, or you probably won't get that soy sauce or salt and pepper. read more

I am happy to have Mai Thai closer in toward town. I haven't been here since a visit in 2005 when they were near campus. The new spot on Southland is small and clean. Our service was very friendly. I visited with my two kids (9 and 7). I started with a small salad with peanut dressing. At $4.99, a bit high for what it was, but otherwise ok. My kiddos ordered wonton and chicken bamboo soups which came in generous portions. Then we split two entrees, pad see ew with pork and homestyle basil stir fry with chicken. They were both hot and tasty and disappeared quickly. The pad see ew (which my son proclaimed the best he's had) had both broccoli and Choy sum (Chinese broccoli), which added nice color and crunch to he dish. The homestyle was minced chicken with sliced peppers and Thai basil. The sauce was light and flavorful. We were very pleased with our meal and will undoubtedly return soon. read more

A very nice family business. An Adorable 10-year old boy and several teenagers were helping out as servers on a busy Friday night: they are very well spoken and professional. Way to go to teach kids good work ethic at a young age! The entrees that involve seafood were very high quality, light yet flavorful. Definitely spicy enough if you like spicy food. I wonder how hot is "Thai hot", given the "medium" version is spicier than I am used to. I wish they offered a true "mild" version as I requested, but I do not fault the restaurant for it. My only recommendation to the restaurant would be to think carefully about the kitchen operation and perhaps expand if they can afford hiring more kitchen help: There was an at least a 45 minute wait Friday night for several tables and new customers. They had to turn away some customers walking into the door. The kids apologized profusely and they obviously were a bit stressed. We were told it's not common to have this kind of delay. Nevertheless, this is not a business model that could sustain in the long run, in my opinion. I hope the business does well by getting over the "bottleneck" in the kitchen. read more

I go here for lunch about once a week. The food is fresh and delicious, and prepared with a variety of fresh vegetables. The lunch specials are very reasonable; lunch with tax is under $10. There are about 20 different noodle and curry options. Everything I have tried there was good. Portion sizes tend to be a bit smaller than some other Thai places, but big enough for lunch. My go-to meal is Pad Se Ewe with chicken. Wide noodles pan-fried with a light brown sauce. Broccoli Rabe, purple cabbage, carrot and sprouts top it all. Very good. Last night, my husband suggested that we get a bite to eat while we were out, but instead of the usual exchange - Me: "Where would you like to go?" Him: "I don't care." Repeat until one of us cries - he actually suggested we try Mai Thai! Mai Thai is next door to our favorite small animal veterinary practice (Southland Veterinary Hospital) and though we had driven past it many times we had never stopped to eat here. The aroma was heavenly as soon as we opened our car doors and stepped outside. We were on the late side, having arrived about 45 minutes before they closed at 9:00 PM, but we never felt rushed. When asked, our waiter was happy to tell us about his favorite dishes, and we ordered two of his recommendations (Pad See-Ew and Garlic Combination) which turned out to be good choices. We also sampled a deep-fried Thai roll that contained noodles and was covered in a sweet chili sauce. Disclaimer: I am not a fan of sweet entrees. I especially have a difficult time with sweet meat dishes, so Thai food has been difficult for me to love. I realize that the goal in Thai cuisine is to balance sweet, spicy, salt, and sour elements to achieve a dish that has a hint of all four elements without being overpowered by any one ingredient, but my experiences have been an overbalance of sweet on far too many occasions, so Thai just isn't one of my favorites. The dish I chose was a savory dish (garlic combination meat) that was not at all sweet, but it wasn't sour or spicy, either...very one-note. Before I ordered, I asked the waiter if the dish included any vegetables to which he replied "yes, it includes lettuce and carrots," which turned out to be a small undressed side salad. My husband's Pad See-Ew was a delicious wide-noodle dish with chicken and broccoli. I could taste all four elements in this dish, and the noodles were thin and delicate. If my garlic combination had included any vegetables and had enough broth/sauce to mix with its rice side-dish, it would have been a better entree. We agreed that we liked Mai Thai well enough to try it again, and I will update my review if our future experiences are better. Pros: cheap price for weekday lunch (smaller portion obviously), but just enough to hold you up until 5pm. We had the usual which is the drunken noodles. The noodles were just perfect amount of tenderness and Sauces were great. However we should not have gotten the Thai hot (warning ppl, we are Asian and we can handle spicy like nobody's business but this was really hot, to the point my wife asked me to make some white rice to eat with it bc there's no other way she could eat it by itself. The owner warned me about getting Thai hot so it's not her fault. So no star deduction because of this. Cons: who charges $20 for an appetizer soup lmao, when I looked at that price for tom yum soup my wife and I just laughed out loud! Most expensive Tom Yum we have ever seen! Maybe for a room service at the W hotel in London but not a small family restaurant located next to Save a lot in middle Kentucky lol maybe it is special but we would not try it for $20. read more

After months of wanting to try Mai Thai I finally got around to it and ordered pad Thai to-go. The restaurant looks very nice. Like really nice! You could take just about anyone here for just about any occasion and be fine. Unfortunately my first impression was quickly changed with the first breath I took. There was a funky smell lightly masked by cleaning products. It was pretty awful, if I hadn't already called in my order I would have left. I haven't read any other complaints about that, maybe they had a sewer backup or something today and it was just bad timing. The Pad Thai was really good, a little sweet, and just good; if someone had not stubbed their toe on the salt. I couldn't get through it, but it is good. I'm left thinking there is a lot of potential here, and had it not smelt so bad and had the dish not been over salted I would have a very different opinion. I need to try Mai Thai again. read more
