Not a fan. It's serviceable though. The coconut soup came broken instead of smooth. It's not very creamy, more sour. The calamari was consistently overcooked. The massaman beef with great. Their spice level 4 is about 1/4 a habanero. If a disk says it's naturally spicy, add a extra level to it. E.g. a spicy dish w/spicy level 3 or actually a spice level three. Either way, they keep the place clean and their service is fine. But yeah, the calamari, in our soup, curry, and fried were all horrid. Very rubbery, e.g. they are very overcooked. read more

This restaurant is very unassuming in a strip mall - but do *not* underestimate it! The interior ambiance is very cute, warm, and clean. We got our food to go, but staff was super friendly. And most importantly, the food was absolutely delicious and authentic. Portion sizes are great for the price, it was fresh, and flavorful! Food is always tasty and well prepared at the Mai Thai! Our perennial favorite for an appetizer is coconut soup. Spoonfuls of delicious warm broth, a few crunchy vegetables and your choice of a protein cap off this culinary soup masterpiece. Refreshingly light and full of flavor! Our ROMEO group went here for lunch today with six members. Got there right at 11:30 and there was a line waiting for it to open. The hostess set up a table for six and took our drink orders. It was the first time here for 5 of our members. The restaurant got crowded pretty fast with people waiting in line to get a seat after about 30 minutes. I ordered some Golden Angels for the table so that everyone could taste them. They were a big hit, with the plum dipping sauce really making them great. We had two orders for "Two Friends Panang Curry", one Drunken Noodles, one Fried Rice, and a couple of other orders. Also we had two orders for Thom Yum soup (one with shrimp and one with chicken). The soup was very good. The Two Friends Panang has always been a favorite of mine and has just a little tang but also has sweetness from the pineapple. A lot of the guys thought that since this was Thai that it would be very spicy, but were surprised that the meals were very good a just right. Every single person gave it a rating as 4.5 along with one 5.0 rating.....Averaging a 4.6 on the ROMEO scale! Great place. It took a bit to get the orders since the restaurant filled up pretty quickly, but our waitress was great and checked on us throughout the meal. This place has quickly become one of my favorite Thai restaurants in the area. The food is good, the service is great and I just get warm and cozy "mom and pop" vibes every time I walk in the door. My son and I came here for dinner and it was his first time, so I was very excited to introduce him to this joint! I must say this is the first place in SC where I've been served good steamed siomai dumplings! They must have been handmade fresh and not frozen based on the texture of the dumpling and the filling. The flavors really came together and we loved them! I ended up ordering the drunken noodles and my son tried one of Thailand's signature meals, Pad Thai. Even though I had not tried their Pad Thai before, I had high hopes for his meal, but it was very heavy on the peanuts. The first bite of his pad thai was good, but every bite after was drowned in the peanut flavor that it diminished the rest of the delicious flavors. Mind you, he is not a picky eater at all and has been eating Pad Thai for over 10 years. This plate just didn't hit the spot. We both agreed to ask for only a little bit of peanuts next time we come back. My drunken noodles were very good! Every texture and flavor was on point, from the meat to the veggies to the noodles. Very disappointed with the service. The waitress was very rude and not interested to serve us from the beginning. We reached at 7:15 and were asked to wait for 25mins for the table which is fine but the minute we sat at the table the waitress had an attitude. As she said the kitchen was closing soon we made sure we ordered all the food at the beginning. In few minutes we decided to add few more items and tried calling her and she intentionally ignored us. Then we walked and approached where they were standing and our waitress just turned her head and walked away without paying us any attention. She was serving other tables with a smile but not sure why she was rude to us. The food was decent and only reason giving them 1 star for it. I understand people take pride in their food, but if a customer is telling you that it is disgusting then open your ears to that or your customers will not return which what we have decided to do along with our clients. Family and I love this establishment! We come here bi-weekly and don't mind the 40 mile round trip commute for the amazing food here. Words cannot describe how amazing the food and service is here. We've experienced Thai food in South Korea, Hawaii, all over South Florida and the Florida Keys, and here at numerous establishments in the Columbia/Midlands area. Let me begin by saying that Mai Thai is LOVED by many which leads me to believe that my dislike was one driven by personal preference and not the quality of the food. I was pleasantly surprised by the hefty portion size of the $10 lunch entree . Typically pad see ew has a sweet profile whereas this preparation did not. Sauce was not memorable but sufficiently costed the noodles. All white meat Chicken that was perfectly cooked and not dry. Veggies were also well done, with a nice crispy bite. Mai Thai is one of the best and most genuine Thai restaurants in Columbia! We went for a friend's birthday and despite having a big crowd, they had as seated promptly. The hostess and server were patient and attentive. I ordered the soft-shell crab appetizer and a beef Pad Thai. The soft-shell crab appetizer is one of my favorites. They don't skimp on the portion size--the crab is so crunchy and creamy, and the dipping sauce pairs perfectly with it. The Pad Thai was good, not the best, but I still thoroughly enjoyed it. It was very saucy and sweet! I shared Tom Yum shrimp soup with a friend and WOW. This was probably the best Tom Yum soup I've ever had. The shrimp was tender and juicy, not overcooked at all, and the soup itself was so sour and fragrant. My friend also really liked the drunken noodles she got, saying it's one of the best she had. Definitely come give Mai Thai a try if you like Thai food. They won't disappoint! I had Thai tea with boba and you could select your level of sweetness. It was yummy! Our friend had the mango tea with popping boba which he enjoyed. If you want good pad Thai in Columbia, go to Dukes Pad Thai, where they specialize in making Pad Thai itself. The panang curry on the other hand, was WAY too sweet. It was like I was eating curry dessert soup. Again if you want good Thai curry, go to Dukes!! All the other dishes, were too sweet too. We ordered boba to try and salvage the meal, and it was okay, we were just too lazy to find a dessert spot near the area, so we just ended the night here. So was looking for something close to my hotel that wasn't a chain or fast food and as a lover of Asian food Mai Thai grabbed my interest. The menu looked promising so I checked it out. When I first arrived I almost bailed. This is not a place to go for atmosphere. Very sterile with little character compared to many other Thai places. Plus the area is kind of fringe. I was hungry so I ordered the beef salad and the seafood in basil sauce. The salad was average at best - the beef over cooked but the flavor was good . The reason I'm writing this review is the seafood basil was fantastic. That sauce was spectacular; texture, flavor, spice and visual appeal . The seafood was also perfectly cooked. What a great dish, I ate it all. They also had brown rice as an option and that's always a plus. Service was super friendly and attentive. Strip mall location belies a nice and cozy interior. We arrived about 20 minutes before noon and the place was more than half full. By the time our food arrived at our table there was a 20 minute wait for tables. It's location close to the hospital and all the medical offices nearby make this place a popular choice. The attached cafe is not open. They probably do not have the the staff available to make boba teas and other items. I saw only the 2 servers, and whoever was working in the kitchen. Despite the lean staff service was efficient and food was tasty. One server was friendly and always checking on us to see if we needed anything. (Makes up for the other one who seemed brusque.)
