We had some last-minute changes in our Des Moines trip so we decided to give this a try and also because it's an Iowa-thing to check off. We tried the maid-rite sandwich, pork tenderloin sandwich, Graziano grinder combo with soda and fries, and deluxe grilled cheese. The maid-rite sandwich was a very sad-looking sandwich and the flavors were not redeeming. Even after adding the condiments, it did not change much. There is nothing deluxe about the grilled cheese. The grinder and the fries were mediocre. The best item is surprisingly the pork tenderloin. It was a huge slab of pork that was crispy and tender.

First time in a maid rite in Iowa Good food and service!! Love maid rites!! Great food!!

The counter guy (manager?) was EXTREMELY helpful. I'd highly recommend this place for his hospitality alone!

I have always wanted to try a loose meat sandwich if I made it to the state of Iowa. I found out that Maid-Rite is a popular restaurant for the loose meat sandwich. They have restaurants in Illinois and Iowa. The sandwich and the deep fried cheese curds were delicious. I will definitely make another trip when I am back in Illinois or Iowa.

We recently were in town and decided to stop by and try this Maid-Rite. We grabbed a little bit of everything: Maid-rite, tenderloin, cheese-rite and a ice cream malt, all to-go. What made our visit was the service. The gentleman working the front counter was so kind, friendly. Definitely, notable about this location! Our food was fast. The tenderloin was quite good. The only thing to note was my cheese seemed a little dry around the edges on my maid-rite and didn't really melt. Also, the meat tastes a little different depending on which location you go to. Would try this place again

Mega Rite with Cheese and Fries! The only way to go!

This is the best kept secret in Ankeny Iowa. I highly suggest that you look past the location and visit this place. It's right next to Walmart and the food is amazing. The customer service it's just as excellent. I suggest the mega cheese rite and fries! Both of them are cooked perfectly and it's an excellent place to take your family. Very family oriented not to mention a great ambience!

Chili was average. Lukewarm temperature. Hubby thought his chili was good. Clean appearance. Little pricey - $5 for a bowl of chili

We sat at a high top with a bench, and it actually worked really well for having the baby with us. Drinks and waters came out efficiently, and our waitress was kind and courteous. The food did take a little while, but everything came out together, which I appreciate with a larger table. My fries were room temperature when they arrived, but they quickly replaced them with piping hot ones, so no real complaint there. Our table had a good mix: the Pulled Pork Sandwich for $12.99, Crispy Chicken Wrap for $14.99, Tequila Lime Chicken Tacos for $14.99, BTH Classic Smash Burger for $14.99, and a medium order of house-made boneless wings for $16.99. No one complained, which is usually a pretty good sign with our crew. The restaurant was clean, fairly busy, and all the staff we interacted with were friendly. Drink prices seemed reasonable too. We were also able to hang out and visit for quite a while without feeling rushed, which made it a really nice family stop. It is close to home, the food was good, and my daughter picked up the bill for Father's Day, so that made it taste even better. We will definitely be back.

The staff there was friendly enough, but my interaction with them was limited. The restaurant does not have an indoor dining area, but there are some tables outside that you can sit and eat at. On Mondays, they have a single burger special. It really draws people in and packs the place. They pretty much only have burgers and fries. I got the bacon western burger. It took them about 8 minutes to prepare. The burger was ok. It did not live up to the hype. I liked that I could taste the flame-broiled flavor, but it also had a frozen-patty taste. The fries were also not up there with the best that I have had. Was I able to eat my food? Yes... but it just did not rank up there with the better burgers I have had. This would not be my go-to spot for burgers. I would more than likely find a different burger joint to satisfy my craving.

The folks running the ordering and pickup windows always seem to be friendly regardless of the weather. We have never had anything but really good experiences in Ankeny. The orders are accurate and they are courteous! As far as ambiance it's primarily a drive through ordering restaurant on a very busy corner! They do offer some outdoor seating with umbrellas for shade, and there is a walk up window for ordering if you don't want to drive through. When it's busy it's hard to get to a parking spot however. Pro tip! Monday night is the night to go if you want a smoking deal and the same good quality, they have a single 1/4 burger for $2.18. It's a fantastic deal, and they don't substitute it for a lesser quality burger. It's the same thing just a lot less expensive!

The Service: We were eventually seated at a booth (the one with no working TVs), and while we were quickly greeted by Jennifer--who was our waitress for the night--we ended up waiting most of the evening for her to come back. We did get waters and drinks while waiting for our friends to arrive. Once they showed up, it took a little while to get the rest of our order in, but it all worked out in the end. They were very busy that night--between the Indiana Fever game, graduations, and a band crowd. Jennifer was hustling, along with her husband and one other waitress, trying to cover the whole place. So, while I can't (and won't) complain about the effort, they clearly needed more help to reach that 5-star level. Same goes for the bar--it was overwhelmed and absolutely needed more than one bartender to handle that crowd. Just a note for management: the team was working hard, but they were outnumbered. The Food: The kitchen was on the ball. Our appetizer of Brussels sprouts was delicious--great flavors, perfectly cooked--and they hit the table just moments before our entrees did. I had the jalapeño burger with the ridiculously long name (you'll know it when you see it), and added the $4 onion rings. The burger was fantastic--well made, full of flavor. The onion rings, while not quite worth the $4 upcharge as a side, were the crispiest onion rings I've ever had. Really good. Kim's wrap, on the other hand, was underwhelming--$14 for a tortilla shell mostly filled with lettuce and not much flavor. Our friends seemed happy with their meals and later ordered a bread pudding to share. We all had a sample, and while it was decent, it was definitely missing a sauce or something to make it pop. The Value: Our bill--1 appetizer, 2 meals, and 4 drinks--came to over $100 plus tip. (Now that I'm writing this, I kind of wish I'd looked at the receipt more closely.) Still, that seems to be the going rate for this kind of night out in the greater Des Moines area these days. Pro Tip: Try coming during happy hour to stretch your dollars a bit further.

We have been there before with friends for drinks and enjoyed the restaurant and good service so decided to check out their burgers. We were in around 5:15 on a Saturday night and immediately seated in a large booth. Our server was friendly and attentive and efficient (checked in briefly 3 times and let us say if we needed anything) all throughout the meal. The burger menu isn't super extensive but satisfying to all palettes- a classic/simple/just the basics, to specialty (see picture). I did sample the means for other offerings and there were many diverse offerings. Apps and dessert tempting but all I was craving was a good burger. I wasn't sure about Mac and cheese on my burger but it was a nice addition. I took some off the burger and enjoyed as an extra side/ it was creamy and mildly flavor so as to add more texture than actual flavor to the burgers. I should mention I had not eaten all day as normally I could never eat two burgers, however they were more thin than thick and tasted perfect on what tasted almost like a steamed (and soft) bun. I enjoyed the signature pickles on the side and added a little signature bacon jam to the burger which was a nice flair of flavor. My husband's burger was the perfect mix of cheese and mushrooms and flavor. Nothing special about the Tots or fries except a generous amount of both and their presentation in a mini fry basket. We waited about 10-15 minutes for our food but between water and drinks served it was a quick wait, especially for a Saturday night. This is a pleasant restaurant whether eating in a quiet booth or for watching bets while eating. Lots of options for couples or larger groups. There isn't much parking close to the restaurant but we found spaces at the hotel right next to it. Worth the drive. Craving satisfied.
