Executive Chef/Managing Partner Jenny Symonds took over The Handlebar back in April I think and she brought her experience and a new menu with her. Being a little bit of a foodie I've followed Jenny through four previous steps in her career...so it was only a matter of time until I made it down to The Handlebar. Pulling in The Handlebar has an almost country market look to the property rather than a restaurant. It's cute. A HUGE parking lot, a large patio, and accommodations for bicycles. The decor inside is tasteful and modern. The dining area looked clean. Darn near spotless. A hostess greets you as you walk in and seats you. Along with a lunch and dinner menu they also offer a full bar. Seating inside is low top table and chairs and a bar and bar stools. A server both takes your order and presents you with your bill at the table. The menus aren't overwhelming but still cover all the bases (apps, sandwiches, other entrees, pizza, etc.). Comfort food to a few Asian spin/fusion dishes that I've come to expect on one of Jenny's menus. Today I ordered the bike tire tenderloin with a side of cucumber salad and a soda (Coke products) for dine-in and an order of the raspberry cheesecake egg rolls to go. Steve Roberts has a very good tenderloin just down the road in Redfield (Dexfield Diner & Pub). He has some BPT competition here...! The Handlebar's tenderloin is a little thinner but bigger around... There's a reason they call it the bike tire... They offer a second bun at no extra charge. Served burn your mouth hot and still steaming. Drained properly. Absolutely no residual grease to ruin the experience. I saw quite a few of them walked by me by staff today; you can tell it's a popular item. Both great tenderloins! And if you like tenderloins you should try one of each... Courtney was my server today and she did an excellent job from start to finish! I was surprised to see the amount of staff on site on a Sunday. There were at least four servers...maybe five and Chef Ryan was in the back. Evidently they haven't heard about the staffing shortage other places are having. Just kidding...! I'm sure they have...it's just not something they seem to be struggling with right now. The cucumber salad was cold and fresh. A nice break in between bites of the tenderloin. I wish the portion of the salad had been just a little bigger. I grew up in a town like Dallas Center, Actually quite a bit smaller than Dallas Center...but the same demographic of people (minus the bicycling community). A Casey's, a small downtown, and a smattering of businesses, and no stop lights. I was a little bit worried for The Handlebar venture with the changes Jenny might bring. Would she be able to please both the newer generation and maintain the older regulars? Yeah...I overthink things sometimes. I could tell by looking around today that it appears she has been successful with both. Older gentlemen (probably farmers taking a break from harvest) enjoying a Sunday meal by themselves and some with their family. Bicyclists both on the patio and dining inside... Dallas Center is a nice little community and especially pretty right now with it being Fall. I'd love to tell you those raspberry cheesecake egg rolls made it back to Clive...but with all transparency they only made it down a couple of side streets and around the city park. They are amazing! I've had them before. They were on one of Jenny's previous menus... Feel like getting out of the Des Moines metro for dinner? Enjoy the Fall colors and make the drive down to Dallas Center and check out The Handlebar! I know I'll be going back! That hot beef stack on the dinner menu... The picture of it on their Facebook page sure screams... OMG! Like and check out their Facebook page for hours, additional details, etc. https://www.facebook.com/thehandlebardc/

21 and up only restaurant and craft cocktails!…read more Locals of Adel called and invited us out to try this new restaurant. They had a sitter for the weekend. They were really excited of the idea of this place that had just opened on the town square. You can get dressed up and make a reservation or you can wing it like we did. We walked in, fingers crossed on an early Saturday evening. We had five in our group. The hostess stands at a repurposed single record player. She asked if we had a reservation and made it work when we told her we did not. She asked if we preferred the bar or table and we said whatever was available. She grabbed some help and they threw a table together for us. Kudos for getting us in. The decor is dark with this lovely warmth to it. The red and white brick on the walls was exposed in the renovation contrasting the black walls and ceiling. No noisy televisions. All the staff are dressed dressed as if it was an upscale restaurant. The bartenders were classy and busy shaking up the drinks. You don't have to dress up to get in, but you definitely could and no one bats an eye either way. The waiter quickly came and brought waters for the table, but also took drink orders. Everyone ordered a different drink off the drink menu. Mocktails, beers, cocktails, wine. It's all available. He came back with drinks and reviewed the nightly appetizer specials with us. We were all excited we got a big mix of things to try across the table. Drinks: Our friend who ordered the Old old fashion. He said it was one of the top 3 best he has ever had. My girl friend ordered the Mulberry Lane and really enjoyed it. I tried the Cosmic Cotton Candy and loved the tart flavorful drink. Food. 10 out of 10. Nothing disappointed! We were blown away! Appetizer special that night of Brussels sprouts. Big shareable helping. Fantastic flavor with a great glaze. The tenderness of the sprout made them so easy to devour. I loved the little bit of crunch they had on the outside. Appetizer Fajita Egg Rolls! Grilled chicken. "I've never had chicken eggs rolls" my friend kept saying over and over. "They are nothing to bawk at." I say. Flavored with bell peppers, again spices and topped with a delectable pineapple salsa. The presentation of the plate was very pretty and we had no problem devouring them as well. Appetizer Poutine Americana: We got all the appetizers to come out with the regular meals and I think our friend went feral as he guarded his plate to try and keep these for himself. Buffalo fries smothered in gravy. Topped with braised bison, and their beer battered cheese curds. He finally let me try a little, and wow no wonder he was trying to fight off his wife from the plate. The Native was the burger platter ordered by my husband. Now don't take this lightly. It is a mouth watering 1/3 lbs buffalo. My husband tried to trick me and tell me that I wouldn't enjoy it, but once I got my half I didn't put it down. The spices they used with the flavor of the buffalo meat was a burger wet dream. He upgraded and got the cheese curds with his burger and the whole table was just head over heels for these cheese curds. They are like curds we have never had anywhere! Yes they are beer battered. When the menu says they are puffy, they are not lying! It was so light and fluffy and we just loved every little nibble. We are so glad we ordered the way that we did. Trying so many different things all in one sitting. Everyone was blown away. So much so I am ready to make the trip back out from Des Moines just to steal my girlfriend for the night so we can try more! I cant believe how excited we were over this food. We finally filled up and calmed down by watching the bartenders work their magic on drinks. Constantly moving back and forth, filling orders. I am so excited for Adel to have this place. It's got class, but wont turn you away. It's got the cool dark atmosphere so you can have a quiet dinner with friends and build up those relationships. The staff was great, and everyone had a great time. I highly recommend you get in there. If not just for a drink, but a meal too.

Loved the strawberry rhubarb pie. Our cocktail journey included the Manhattan, A Rare Breed, The Topaz, The Espresso Martini and the Goldfinch. Would highly recommend each of these. We enjoyed sitting at the bar and visiting with the bartenders. Service was great. Ambiance reminds me of Berry and Rye in Omaha, but better. Ambiance alone is worth the trip for a drink.

We loved the look and feel as we walked up to the building and felt that the overall experience was well above average. Our only 'beef' was that most of the unique beers listed on their table menus were not available - tap options were limited to a few domestic beers, which was disappointing for restaurant with "Tap" in its name. The perfect evening on the patio and quality of the food offset this disappointment though. For our dinners, I ordered the Smachos (see picture) and asked to have them delivered as an appetizer - as I wasn't that hungry. My wife and one of our neighbors each ordered Tenderloins (see pictures). All of the food was delicious and highly recommended. We especially enjoyed the Smachos, which had pieces of their smash burger included in the toppings and were fantastic for sharing. While it is a bit off the beaten path for those of you living in Des Moines, it is only about 10 minutes to the West on a divided highway. We found the peaceful charm of the shaded patio next to the brick street out front contributed to a nice dinner with our friends and enjoyed the stop.
