Yelp led me here earlier this week for lunch and it's located in an unassuming strip center. Inside it's decorated with New Orleans and Mardi Gras themes and is a table service restaurant. It's the kind of eatery where the waitresses call you "baby" which is a respected Deep South Tradition. I ordered the 1/2 po boy & 1/2 gumbo lunch with a side dish (I chose baked potato salad) for $14. The food arrived about 10 minutes later. My sandwich was a grilled shrimp po boy on bread that tasted like it was from Gambino's. It was very good taste wise and I enjoyed it. Ditto on the cup of seafood gumbo with shrimp in it and with a good tasting roux too. Finally the baked potato salad was creamy, cool and flavorful. Altogether this was a very good meal. On the front door is a sign saying that they charge an extra 4% for credit card usage. Also, on my check were two prices, one for cash and the other for credit. While I detest restaurants that charge extra for credit card usage, I will give Gumbo Pot credit in that they clearly disclose that fee on the door and on the bill but I still hate it. read more

After a long days work followed by a five hour drive, I was ready for a decent meal and a couple of beers and Gumbo Pot delivered. I was greeted as soon as I walked in and made to feel welcome. I was seated in seconds and the server was there to take my drinks order right away. I went with the chicken and sausage gumbo and it was really good. It had great flavor, plenty of meat and just the right amount of heat. It was served with a small bread roll on the side. On top of that the food came out quickly and was hot, but not so hot you couldn't eat it. We are in our RV and traveling the southern part of the US. Lunch time in Vicksburg MS and wanted to try something local. Ordered takeout of 2 crawfish pies (for later), Fried Oyster Po Boy with Okra, Shrimp Po Boy Blackened with Green Beans, Chicken and Sausage Gumbo, and Seafood Gumbo. OMG this was the best Po Boy I've had. The oysters were fried just right and were nice and succulent. The Shrimp had such good flavor with the blackened season. The Okra was not a bit mushy but it did lack salt. Both gumbos were really flavor and had a nice slight kick in the end that crept up and was not overpowering. We would definitely recommend this place! I saw a lot of reviews that they are slow, even so it is definitely worth the wait. read more

Decided to try this place after putting it off the entire work week. Well I should have continued putting it off. Now if you are a fan of paying a lot of money for a little bit of food then this may be the place for you. Definitely not worth the $21 plus the 4% credit card fee. I ordered the West Bank Catfish ( blackened catfish served with a crawfish sauce over a bed of rice). Now this dish did come with a lot of the crawfish sauce which drowned the little bit of rice it came with. Now let's not forget the catfish ( one tiny fillet split down the middle) which was actually pretty good but it was one of the tiniest pieces of catfish I've ever gotten at any restaurant. I was given the task of finding a restaurant to go to for lunch while traveling through Vicksburg, Mississippi. I'm skeptical if Yelp is the right way to go because I've come to realize that not a ton of folks down in small towns in the south really swing to using this as a way to seek out good food and local spots. But hey, I gave it a whirl and this spot as well as a biscuit named place popped up as potential winners. My dad really wanted a good gumbo spot so this won. They also had fried tomatoes on the menu and that was key for picking it. Visually, it doesn't come across as a cute restaurant. It's in a strip mall for one thing. But taste wise - pretty darn good. You can opt for boiled seafood or go the gumbo route. Fried shrimp and catfish baskets, po boys, steaks, burgers. I ultimately went with a small lunch of a cup of seafood gumbo and a side of hush puppies. But tried with appetizers the fried green tomatoes and boudin balls. Thoughts overall: The gumbo was quite good. They even include baby crab legs that I managed to cut my finger open on because I'm stupid when it comes to opening them. Tried my dad's wife's full sized crab legs and that was an interesting experiment. The soup was good, could use a little more of a kick to it. The fried green tomatoes again, excellent but not the best I've ever had. I'd like them thicker in cut and a puffier batter maybe. The crawfish cheese sauce that came with the tomatoes was amazing. I'd eat that on its own. Hell. Boudin balls were kind of a stand out item. Very moist and spicy and full of flavor. The deep fried oysters my dad was eating, not my cup of tea. The hushpuppies - exactly as I like them - sweet and without chunks of corn. The way bite sized corn bread should be. I'm probably in the small percentage on how much hatred I feel about corn nuggets appearing in food. Everything was a-okay. Just a few miles from Louisiana but Vicksburg is a small town, so we had to rely on our fellow raters to find a Cajun restaurant. Again, they came through - the Gumbo Pot had some good offerings. We had a dozen Charbroiled oysters ($28), Seafood Gumbo (10), Red beans/rice (7), and fried green tomatoes (10). The Gumbo was excellent, as was the crayfish sauce that came with the tomatoes. These could compete with the best we've had elsewhere. The oysters were good, but not great (see my review of Pearls Oyster House in Memphis), as was the red beans/rice. The tomatoes were just OK - disappointed that they were breaded with seemingly only corn breading. The service was very good, and there was no wait (at about 6:30 pm on a weeknight). We felt the prices (above) were reasonable. We considered going back as there seems to be a lot of highly rated restaurants in the area which were permanently closed, but did find one (see Rustys Riverfront Grill). read more

On a cross country roadtrip and hit Vicksburg, MS at lunch. Gumbo Pot popped up as a recommendation and decided what the heck, why not; especially since it was right off the interstate at exit 1C. Did not disappoint. Cool local's spot. 1/2 the people walking in the shop went directly the buffet room to be turned back because the buffet was not an option that day. Food was great. Had a beef pie, chicken and sausage gumbo, and fried shrimp basket. All really good. No pretense of being fancy. Just good food and excellent customer service. Nini was great. My husband and I went to his place thinking it was going to be a "great experience"... We were the first people (only o es in the restaurant at this time) to walk in on this particular evening from a 4 hour drive. We were offered a seat by a young lady. Almost 10 minutes later another lady came to our table to take our order. Another couple came in, sat in front of us and right away, "Tonight is our special steak and shrimp night". And greeted this man by name, "Hey George!" I was like damn she just laid a menu on our table and walked away. So then the lady came to our table and finally told us about the "special steak and shrimp". I said, I wanted gumbo (I don't eat red meat), since this is "Gumbo Pot". My husband wanted "Special steak and shrimp". Then here comes another couple that sat right behind us, they received a nice "Special steak and shrimp night" greeting upon walking in as well. Our order went in first, the couple in front order went in the people who sat behind us, order went in last. The people with the "steak and shrimp" both received their order first!!! My husband's plate sat at the window for at least five-six minutes as she walked by it two-three times before she brought his meal to the table. Mind you, I was facing the order window observing everything this lady was doing (we are military, so we watch everything). By the time he got his dinner and I received my gumbo... It was nearly Cold... Moral to the story: Tell me you are racist without saying you're racist. So I CANNOT say that my service or food was pleasing. read more

First of all, do yourself a favor and disregard most of these positive reviews. I don't think many of them are organic/authentic. There is something very mysterious about the 4 star rating. This place can't possibly rate any higher than 1 1/2 on a good night. Here's why: Every restaurant will occasionally have circumstances such as being short staffed or perhaps run out of a particular item. The good ones handle such circumstances with grace and a solid effort. Most people respond with patience when such a positive attitude is presented. As for our visit here this evening, I have no real words other than the following: Somewhat as a consequence of recent changes to the menus which were posted on Yelp, the three of us in our party ordered shrimp baskets. They literally looked like kid's meals once they were brought out. All three entrees put together would still be smaller than a respectable seafood place would provide in a single order of the same thing. Super small serving sizes for these baskets which were presented on a 9" plate. We paid $70 for these three "baskets". Unless you have a child sized appetite, you will leave there hungry if you order this item. Our waiter claimed to be overworked, but sadly the real issue was one of having a surly disposition as a consequence. We were told from across the room with a deadpan look "we're short handed. Be with you when I can". We smiled and said no problem. After a lengthy wait we were finally able to order which we did quickly. Once our waiter brought the drinks, it was the last time our table was approached until we got up and got our own refills and condiments. At that point we were told "I was gonna get that for you!"...even though we were otherwise legit ignored. The hostess did what she could and eventually delivered our food when our waiter was not to be seen. Never checked on drink refills. Never offered any condiments. No inquiry as to whether we needed anything. No attention to the table at all. And the place wasn't terribly busy, so no excuse for this sort of neglect. Only when ordering, were we told they were also out of crayfish (which one person in our party was planning to order). This after a large sign at the door advertising crayfish was prominently on display. No indication of the absence of this mainstay item until one in our group tried to order it.. Another nearby sign informed diners (once they were seated) that no carry out boxes would be provided. I can't imagine anyone needing one after being served 7 shrimp, 10 fries and three tiny hush puppies which was advertised as a "basket". I WILL say that the shrimp was good, small in quantity though it was. Unfortunately, the other issues with this place made for a miserable dinner. The bad attitude we encountered is exemplified by management as can be noted by yet another sign by the register which directs customers to "be nice or leave". Why would there be a need to inform customers to "be nice"? I'd suggest customers won't find anything encouraging at this restaurant so they should just nicely leave before making the mistake of ordering. read more

Quick Review for a Quick Dinner Stop Item 1: Taste of the Bayou (choice of three soups) -seafood gumbo: Really taste the crab flavor! Has a crab in it. This was my favorite from all the soups I selected. The bread that it comes with is flakey on the outside. Best way to describe it is Philsbury biscuit having babies with a dinner roll. It was truly amazing. Item 2: Crawfish pie - loaded with crawfish in the creamy filling and the flakey crust is to die for! Item 3: Boudain - wow... my first time having these and I am in fall. They look similar to large hushpuppies but aren't dry. With the first bite in the middle, you'll see grains packed together. It's savory, it's packed with variety of seasoning, and delicious. My wife is a Louisana native and I'm a lifelong Virginian. We were traveling by and happened upon this place and it ROCKED. Don't be fooled by the simple exterior. The food is awesome and the staff was friendly. If the amount of take out business being done says anything; it's that this place is local's fav. My wife had the shrimp and grits and I had the shrimp po'boy. We drove an extra hundred miles to go home via Vicksburg just to eat at the Gumbo Pot. It was so good (as usual) we stayed an extra night at the RV park just so we could come back for a second dinner. That ought to be all I need to say. Authentic Louisiana cuisine lovingly prepared using fresh ingredients. What is not to love? All of the entrees are excellent but, save room for dessert as the bread pudding is a religious experience.
