Monkitree is THAT place, for Gardiner. The owner features local artisans from across Maine, in a variety of themes. Textiles, jewelry, fine art, kitchen goods, small games and puzzles, coffee, chocolates, and a few unique items of clothing. There's a few things that a true to Gardiner here, that feature fish (alewives), the Kennebec River and the sturgeon. I'd say the prices are on par with the quality of the work shown in the shop. The penny candy available (while no longer a penny) is a delightful throwback to childhood, and being able to sample a wide variety of candy is a special treat. The store also has a wide selection of kitchen, home, stationary, kids games and toys. I did not partake, but I believe they also serve ice cream from a pick-up window on the outside of the store where there is also a nice seating area. It's in a really cute part of a mainly residential town so walking around the area eating your new penny candy is a great way to explore.

I began knitting two years ago and love alpaca yarn, and the thought of being able to meet the alpaca that I am knitting from just seemed so cute. Mike was super friendly and very informative. There were 8 total people in our group (our 5 plus a family of 3) and he was engaging with everyone. Our 5 year old grandson started out a bit unsure but Mike was very encouraging and our grandson was able to really open up. What a great experience for kids. The shop is filled with yarn from the alpacas, and they make sure that you have the name of the alpaca as well in case you need more at a later date. I mentioned we would be back later in the year and would love to take the rug making class and they let us know we can schedule that through them for a date that works for us, so if you don't see an experience listed for your dates, call them or send them an email because they will work with you!
