I went to Maine Health lab today in Biddeford. I wouldn't recommend this lab. Waited for over an hour for a simple blood draw. When I asked how much longer I was told 2 or I people ahead of you. When checking in, I should have been told it was a long wait. My time is just as valuable as theirs. People checking in now are told a half an hour. I should have listened to the reviews before going here with an emergency. They will make you wait 7 hours before doing a terrible assessment and avoid telling you anything if it makes them have to actually work. They claim to have a plan for my treatment but every day that plan falls by the wayside and the weeks keep piling up. Some great people work here, but many of them are just cashing their paychecks. My beloved PCP had a temporary emergency & I had to go to SMMC ER for meds. I called before going & maybe she had a bad day, a dash snippy. I was told I'd be seen last no matter what & all others would come 1st. Well, this was worrisome until I went in. I was treated with respect, care, and kindness & got an apology for the time I waited. Wow!! These are the nicest professionals, Dr's, nurses, and P.A.'s! They are super, super kind to me! I was blown away. This place is wicked busy. The W"ambulances" are incessantly rolling in. If you are up for seeing a few good-looking men, this is an extra bonus for the wait if you're in the hallway bed near the ambulance entrance. I have gone to a few providers that are less than nice or respectful. This WAS NOT the experience at SMMC Biddeford. The nurses have a sense of humor & the doctors are equally cool! I will drive 45 minutes to SMMC ER, which is actually out of my way because there's 1 place 2 minutes away. If I have another urgent need, I will do the distance & I highly recommend SMMC BIDDEFORD! Horrific experience, very tall bleach blonde nurse poked and poked me with a needle multiple times with complete disregard to how painful the experience was for me. Complete disregard for human life. She treated other staff and people there this way as well. She opened a curtain and left it open while a man was laying fat on a bed with a machine on him bouncing up and down or something. A helicopter person was standing on one side and a nurse with a radar system was on the other with her hair down. She yelled loudly "Do you need me YET". Worst ER unless you come in with something obvious like a break or fracture, laceration, etc. I was taken by ambulance on Friday Aug 12th because of excruciating pain in my left knee rendering unable to walk. I sat in the ER for 7 hours in a wheelchair; ultrasound and x-ray showed nothing or so they say. Doctor and nurse forced me to leave with a manual walker. Pretty much pushed me out the saying "If it gets worse come back." I thought you can't be serious. NEVER EVER AGAIN. So I came home the same way I left.... unable to put any weight on left leg. The walker is useless; a cane is useless. I'm a 74 year old woman in otherwise good health but home alone unable to get around without excruciating pain. read more

This hospital is very dirty. I got an infection from this place. Before getting surgery ask if they are able to track what surgical instruments were used during your procedure. I broke my shoulder. Southern Maine Health Care told me there was nothing they could do for me so they shoved my arm into a sling and sent me home with a pocket full of morphine. My spouse had to administer morphine to me with no oversight, no guidance. I tripped my brain out for a week before I was finally taken off of the morphine. Then they put me on the Oxycodone for a couple of months. just go to York Hospital... they're the best in the area and stay the hell away from SMHC. read more

I write this with fingers covered in gauze, glue over a laceration, and stitches across my middle finger... but I had such exceptional care, I couldn't help but hit my keyboard to tell you all about it! I had a bizarre/freak run in with a *rechargeable* lawnmower. It resulted in 911 call and then a trip to the ER. I've been to other Emergency Rooms in Portland and I have to say they have nothing on this place. First, they treat you like a human. The waiting room is clean, comfortable and spacious. Secondly, the nursing staff, techs, and doctors, are incredible kind. They got me in quickly, even though I was only slightly covered in blood. Although, I did change my shirt after the ambulance crew joked with me. I am a teacher and was wearing a Dr. Seuss t-shirt that said, "trust me I'm a doctor"... it's only funny until you don't need a doctor, FYI. Third, the ER Patient rooms are private and give you a chance to feel like you aren't in an Emergency Room for something that is most likely traumatic... Dr. Stevens did an amazing job explaining the care she was giving and stitching me up. She was caring and patient. She also attempted to get me a follow up appointment at a surgeon who may need to do some repair work on my hand. Way to go above and beyond SMMC! High five for solid patient care! Lastly, the "healing" zen garden outside with the fountain actually was just what I needed while I waited for my ride to take me to get my antibiotics... nice touch, well played. read more

I was a patient on the 4th floor for 2 days. The nurses, cna's and Drs are all terrific. But....the noise was a nightmare!!! Slamming doors at night, staff extremely loud and never kept their voices to a nice volume..they yelled down the halls all night. For some reason, because I am a recovering opiate addict, i had to sign a paper that my door had to remain open??? So my roomate and i couldn't even shut the door to keep the noise out! I will NEVER go back. When you are ill, you need rest. I got 2 hours sleep a night. Unacceptable. I would not recommend going and they need to address this asap. read more

I went out to the back yard with my dog so she could relieve herself - it was approximately 6:00 am. I then got the urge to use the bathroom, then rushed upstairs. I was sitting on the toilet and instantly began sweating out of every pore of my body. I was weak, scared, nauseated - so I did what many of us do and called 911. Got in the ambulance to go to the Emergency Room. I was only there for help. I don't currently have insurance so I don't go to the E.R. Unless I'm really worried that I need professional support. I was discharged with no Covid-19 test,I was still vomiting I was given no IV support. I had to ask for anti nausea drugs - they did give me one round but I was still vomiting and the rudeness from the nurse was off the charts. And most the rest were not to much better. The overall compassion and level of care was obsolete. I am hopeful that they will wake up and do their JOB or better yet find a new one. SHAME ON YOU for treating the members of your community so poorly when they are there for your help. Yes, I totally understand that a pandemic is underway. However, this is the third time in a row I have endured the same treatment from the staff of the ER. They said the only reason they didn't give a COVID-19 test was my current lack of fever. I will never go back and get help from them again in the ER. I was treated so poorly from the moment I got there by ambulance. The triage nurse was SO rude and disrespectful to me. I was so upset by this nurse and how she treated me that I left crying and didn't get seen bc I couldn't trust any of the dr's nurses bc of this horrible nurse. I reached out to the advocate who came to see me while waiting and then went on over to the nurse and started being buddy buddy with her. This nurse treated everyone else that came through with respect. Just bc I am black doesn't mean I don't deserve fair treatment and just bc she is having a bad day doesn't mean she can take it out on me. The nurses wrote in MyChart that I was demanding a room in which I was actually asking to lay down bc I had severe vertigo. But the triage nurse kept thinking I was faking. I totally left feeling like I had done something wrong when indeed I did nothing but come to get medical help. I will let someone random off the street treat me first before I ever set foot back at SMHC ER. Instead of them treating me with compassion I was treated like dirt, two days later I started having covid symptoms and by that Monday I tested positive for covid, so yeah it was real and I was really sick. OMG, where to begin. Staff pulled catheter out and couldn't stop 2 pints of blood flowing into my abdomen before finally calling MD back in. Nobody told me to stop taking my aspirin, just prescription blood thinners. Took 3 days to reduce swelling mass of blood which then pooled in my back - the pain first in abdomen, then back was so bad they put me on morphine for two days, made me sick. Then never started by blood pressure medicine so I went into Afib and blood pressure went up and down. At one point the pulse was 160!! They just couldn't get it back in line. Spent eight days in hospital after routine catherization test. While there, I saw patient discharged who wasn't and was still in room where she was supposed to be, IV incorrectly inserted causing my arm to swell as IV was drained into my arm tissue (they claimed the bag was bad - no, it drained nicely, right into my arm tissue) - required many shots to handle that swelling and pain - two days to recover from that. Roommate's IV malfunctioned and started buzzing; both of us pushed call buttons - nothing. Visitor had to find some staff nurse in hall to come in and fix issue. Moved four times to different wards. Nurse for my last room found an order for an EKG that was supposed to be administered on Day 2; claimed it 'got lost in the computer.' I kid you not!!! The nurses were nice, but talked loudly, lots of personal, non-work related chatter. No supervision at all. No wonder they miss medical orders, buzzers, and flashing lights! I wasn't sure I would ever make it out of there alive! Never, ever will I go there again. read more

Doctor's and Physicians are good. Payment department, not so much. A short while after my surgery, I called the SMHC payment department, to set up a payment plan. I have done this in the past without a problem. They said the bill had been handed over to Marcam Associates, which, by the way, is getting a 1.6 out of 5, for 14 reviews. Instead of helping me set up a payment plan, they said someone would get back in touch with me. Now, through Credit Karma, I discovered my credit score has gone down, thanks to this situation! On a Sunday had to visit for a sinus infection, temp and cough. Took over a half hour to get registered but understandable since there was a line. Once registered, the wait for the doctor was about 1 1/2 hours. Mind you, this is on a Sunday and there's only one doctor on duty. The nurse and doctor were excellent. My wife was having chest pains, and "not feeling like myself"(sharp pain in her chest, dizzyness, nausia and a migraine) They brought her into triage, then moved her into another room for an EKG. After the EKG, they sent her back to the waiting room where we have been sitting for the last 3 HOURS. This is BY FAR the worst hospital Ive ever been to. If you need to go to a hospital I recommend Maine Med or Mercy Hospital in Portland, ME. You'll get seen and get ANSWERS, a lot quicker instead of being left in the dark for hours on end. The ER doctor does not deserve even one star! On Wednesday Feb 21 at 2:30 AM I brought my husband to the ER thinking he would receive quality care! On Tuesday my husband had an emergency root canal following a week of headaches. The cracked tooth caused severe headaches and extreme pain! By early Wednesday morning my husbands pain had gone beyond being tolerable! Hence we went to SMMC ER and the doctor dismissed the root canal and said he had "Trigeminal Neualgia" a nerve disorder which is life changing! I tried to talk about the obvious and she said she new best! Sent us home with Oxy & Carbamazepine, no antibiotics!! Today, Feb 24th he had an emergency tooth extraction and draining of an abscess caused from an extreme infection and his Dr at Maine Medical agreed that my husband was misdiagnosed at SMMC! My guy was short of being septic! This is unacceptable and I'm grateful to Maine Med for doing right by him! read more

Yes they take patients on the premise of whose worse but when one is 73 and has a very bad back and intense left arm pain as well as anxiety, take them to a place of comfort. Don't leave them in the waiting area where they see blood gushing from other patients and that are freaking out! I'm there thinking it's my heart! One waits 2.5 hours and their back and shoulder are that much worse, don't put them in a bed with no pillow or NOTHING to relieve the pain and pressure from the shoulder! You get seen by a nurse and then the dr comes in calling you deary and honey... Not ok The dr acts concerned mentions that they need to get you more comfortable so they are getting the patient some pain meds to help and run some tests to rule things out. Waiting 2 to 3 more hours and no relief, no doctor, no answers. I'm told she is ALMOST certain it's NOT my heart so as I wait for all the other results and that dr left as quick as she came in! Still no meds to help. Even a muscle relaxer would have been helpful! I looked for her and there was no one around! I gave up after being there for 6.5 hours! I left. I didn't even hear from them later. Did anyone even go back to room 23? I would hope if they did they SHOULD call the patient! They are responsible! FIRST DO NO HARM! As I was leaving the waiting room was filled! I informed them that they will most likely be there for 4 hours before seen! The emergency rooms were empty! Empty enough where the staff was actually in one sitting on a bed playing on their phone! They HAD to be understaffed! That's sick! Seriously...there were about 12 empty rooms! Maybe more! I would LOVE to run a hospital! Delegating is a must! Still I have no movement in my left arm and I have to call a specialist because I can't even drive! I need to drive. Good luck! read more

The absolute only reason I even got on Yelp was to warn people of this hospital I do not know the rest of the hospital but me and the wife decided to have our baby here because we did not hear good things about the hospital closest to us so we went with southern maine in biddeford maine hesitant being in biddeford but hopeful we were not happy with the care nor service. now this is not a review of the towels or what products they use no this is a review of the maternity staff and very little of this is positive but I will be BLUNTLY honest! It started with finding out there was complications with the baby and my wife so we had to deliver our baby a month early or face losing both so we agreed waiting was not the right decision and set our date from that moment it went south we checked in and from there things went fast before I knew it they had her prepped and ready for her c-section in less then 2 hours the speed of prep was amazing and the nurses down in the prep area were the nicest then they it started making no sense like how they requested to take blood from my wife before surgery even though she did the blood work 2 days prior so now shes almost half a pint down and they havent even started surgery not comforting and the lab worker did not care about our opinions nor our decisions just proceeded to scan her info and draw blood then she was taken for her spinal and I was told I could not go in and had to wait in the waiting room next to patient intake which was full of sick people coming in then an hour goes by with no sign of any info coming 90 mins go by and someone finally comes to get me to bring me to the OR so I can be with my wife only to find out they already started operating without me in the room turns out my wife was begging people to come get me and all they said was "we think someone went to get him I think!" So now I'm walking in to see my wife cut open and noone warned me that they already started then after that they brought us up to the maternity ward for recovery told us that they had tests to run on both my wife and kid and they proceed to run the basic tests after having a kid which this was our 3rd child so we decently knew what to expect with the exception of the premature tests so now after that they misread the chart and tried to take another blood sample from my wife not even 20 mins after surgery we both denied them and then the doctor came in and said it was not requested and they read the chart wrong it was from a previous date. And from there we had pretty helpful nurses making sure my wife and child were well taking care of for the next few hours with post op check ins UNTIL shift change and the night nurses came on and then the reason for this review is the night nurse Jane came on the first time we met jane she barged in the room without knocking my wife was in the middle of feeding our child no apology and just walked in and started prodding our child and running tests on my wife who was not ok with this and after she left the room door open curtain drawn open for anybody walking down the hall to see and left a great first impression of how the night would go so now were about 9 hrs after surgery and my wife was prescribed pain medication EVERY 4 hours well she was in pretty decent pain cause the effects of the spinal had started to wear off so I went to the nurses station and asked if the nurse jane could deliver the medication and went back to the room to comfort my wife 5 mins later she came to the room and said that she was not going to give my wife her pain meds until the tylenol had expired another 2 hrs so that way she didnt have to come in multiple times which WAS NOT what the doctor prescribed nor her decision to make she was being lazy and thinking she knew more then the doctor who performed the surgery on my wife and neither of us were ok with this after this she went back to the nurses station. Now I know nurses are a great benefit to the medical system and are the middle man between the doctor and patient to help translate that which might get lost in translation but this was not her being busy there was only 1 other patient in that wing and the other nurse and cna were assigned to them so she had no other patient then us and still chose to be lazy and unethical with ZERO manners or respect of privacy and this continued through the night which by the time my wife would have been getting her second dose of pain meds instead she had just received her first and the spinal had completely worn off and was now in EXCRUCIATING pain enough that she was in tears and said she would rather die then continue this pain which was a statement I had NEVER in my life ever hear come out of her mouth even after the first 2 now at this point I am pissed but being a male in a place filled with females and children I was not allowed to voice my opinion so I sat in silence watching what this women was doing to my wife and child I just wish this reaches people read more

This is the WORST ER I have ever experienced. There was a man in pain one week post hip surgery who shouldn't have been sitting for long and he was kept in ER waiting room for 2 hours. We are on vacation and I injured my foot. This hospital was closer in distance than the urgent care so we made the bad decision to come here. We've been here for 2.5 hours and it's freezing in here! I heard from the triage nurse that the wait had been longer than 3 hours at one point. If there was any other option I would take it, but we've already been here too long. I was in a car accident and was brought to SMMC's ER by the paramedics. I was brought to a room in agonizing pain (level10) where a nurse asked me questions and office staff came and got my insurance info. After that I waited for almost 3 hours before seeing another nurse. I buzzed the front desk 5 times, asking for pain meds and to go to the bathroom. One nurse did come in and when I cried and told her I needed some pain relief she rudely told me all she could give me was Tylenol or Motrin and told me not to yell at her. I never saw her again and did not get any Tylenol. Finally, more than an hour later a sweet nurse name Kaitlyn came, sat me on the bedpan which overflowed because I waited so long to urinate, and gave me some Tylenol. She along with my mother wiped the blood off of my face and cleaned me up. CT scans and X-rays followed but I still hadn't seen a dr. so was not able to get anything for the pain, still a level 10. My head was in a neck brace all of this time which exacerbated the arthritis in my neck. Finally after more than 5 hours since I arrived at the ER I saw a very nice dr. who told me my wrist was broken and I finally got something for the pain. After 7 hours I was finally discharged. A scary incident such as a car accident was made so much worse by the lack of empathy, being ignored and being in so much pain. I will never go to SMMC again. I know nurses and drs are overwhelmed with the influx of patients that go to the ER but a better system of treating patients would go a long way. read more
