Dr. Alvarez is very professional, nice, and really listens to your problems and concerns. I can't say for the other doctors there because I've only seen Dr. Alvarez. Kathy, one of many medical assistant at that practice, is so sweet and professional. The front desk staff as a whole are nice, but there's one receptionist that needs to work on her attitude. Every time I've checked in with her, she's just very snippy. Maybe she's having a bad day, but I've checked in with her more than five times so I'm not so sure. However, don't let that deter you because the care there is exceptional and they'll do whatever they can to facilitate your needs. If you are a Mercy patient, sign up with Follow My Health. All you have to do is ask the front desk receptionist to get you signed up. Once you do that, there's an app on your mobile device that is free to download and it's super convenient. I had been in bed for two days and was due back at work but knew I couldn't make it thru an hour of it so I drove to the hospital. It's early afternoon on a Thursday and they had a 3 hour wait in the ER. Well I was absolutely too sick to sit in a waiting room for 3 hours- and that's just to get to step one. So I got back in my car and called Maine Med family practice and found out that they do have urgent care so I could be seen that day at a designated time just by a different doctor- but one with my records on hand. So much better . Seriously unless it's 3am and I'm in an accident I would ALWAYS prefer to just use my urgent care!! So today I had my physical. I received 3 vaccinations and was totally happy to realize the importance of having a regular doctor at a decent hospital. Going over the paperwork they gave me while there I realized that in the last few months they had amassed my entire medical history. I lived seeing shots I received in 1988. I don't have to remember that my Tetanus was due this year. They reminded me. Maybe it cuz I'm from a big city in California but insurance for me there always meant ER visits or clinic visits. Never this personalized care. They called me to set up the appt for my yearly physical. I didn't have to remember. Gotta love that. One less thing on the calendar to set reminders for.

It has become virtually impossible to actually see my primary care physician. Instead, I am constantly passed off to an RN or pushed toward outside referrals because the doctor seems uninterested in actually managing my care or following up on existing conditions. The scheduling system is a disaster. My GP is consistently "booked out" for six months. To make matters worse, InterMed has cancelled my annual physical twice now because the GP took vacation, yet they refuse to prioritize rescheduling me with my actual doctor. When I called to fix this, the booking receptionist named Sara was incredibly condescending and unnecessarily rude, telling me they would "try to squeeze me in" for my annual health checkup. Getting "squeezed in" for foundational, routine preventative care is entirely unacceptable. When you finally do see a doctor, the experience is cold. My GP has absolutely no bedside manner, shows zero initiative in following up on my chronic condition, and just tries to pass me off to specialists as quickly as possible. The administration is toxic, the communication is nonexistent, and the patient care is deeply flawed. I no longer trust this facility with my health and will be looking for a new GP for me and my family.

It took me MANY years to realize this, but I am so happy I did. Dr Hull took the skeleton he had/has, showed me exactly why my back was hurting so much, due to the excess weight. OH BOY I walked out of there FUMING to myself and the person with me!! BUT HE WAS NOT WRONG and deep down I KNEW THAT!! THANKS to Dr Hull, I am now at 166 lbs. My back RARELY HURTS. It was NOT just weight loss. Dr Hull and I hit heads several times (LOL If he sees this, I am the one who told you to also lose weight that I know your Dr wasn't pleased with your weight gain. I am sure now you may remember me, if you see this) I had been losing weight at this time. He angered me, in so many ways, but HE WAS RIGHT TOO!! He had XRays taken and had other exercises given to me. I had moved to Colorado, and am now back in Maine. In Colorado I saw another back Dr, who was able to manipulate my spine so it had straightened out! WOW!! WISH That could be here in Maine. But as the Dr. in Colorado did that, a LOT of what Dr Hull taught me came so much into play. IT does to this very day. Today when the pain hits, I do a few yoga stretches and I AM GOOD TO GO again!! Literally with what I learned from him was to take action and not sit on my butt when the pain hits, thanks to the yoga poses, I'll in 5 mins go from a pain level of 6 down to a 1 and even a 0. If you want a Dr who cares (it may not seem it at times, well it did/didn't to me) I HIGHLY recommend Dr. Hull. Today at 166 LBS, with ALL of the help I've gotten I can again put my leg on the top of my HEAD And I am in my mid 60s! Be ready to work, what you put into it, you'll get out of it. The back pain will not leave without your investing yourself into it. (Mail Order Pharmacy Rep) flat-out told me it's "not their responsibility" to clarify questionable prescriptions with the provider--that it's entirely on the doctor. That's not just poor service, it's reckless. Pharmacies are supposed to be a safety checkpoint, not a guessing game. It got worse. When I asked her how she'd feel if she were in my position, her response was: "It doesn't matter how I would feel." That level of indifference says everything about the customer experience here. Between the lack of accountability, unwillingness to verify obvious issues, and dismissive attitude toward patients, this experience was beyond frustrating. If this is how they handle something as straightforward as a prescription, it raises serious concerns about their overall service and patient care.

Dr. Larson was recommended to me when I first moved to the Portland area and didn't know where to start when it came to finding a doctor. I've been lucky enough to stay pretty healthy over the past few years, so I didn't have to see her often, but I don't think there was ever a time I walked out of her office thinking 'Wow, I'm so glad this woman is my health care provider.' The straw that broke this camel's back was a recent experience over the 4th of July holiday. I called the office on the 4th (which was a Thursday) and left a message, acknowledging the holiday and asking to please be called ASAP. I did not get a call until the following Wednesday, which is an eternity later when you're sick. The other staff her is generally uninterested and slightly unpleasant, and when I signed up for their online services I started getting spam emails and phone calls. In the time that I used Dr. Larson as my physician, she referred me to an incompetent ENT who retired a few weeks after seeing me (so glad I trusted my gut and got out of there before engaging in procedures that would have needed months of follow up). Maybe we're getting too personal now, but my point is that this was the worst doctor I've ever been to, and people shouldn't have to suffer through mediocre health care, especially when there are awesome doctors out there (and it's not like we don't pay for the visits).

Dr. Larson's style of care I would describe as non-interventionist and holistic: she was not eager to prescribe medications for every little thing, and she asked me a lot of questions not just about specific ailments but about my broader health and well-being. I wish I had written a review before I moved away from Portland since I would remember more specific details, but I truly miss her medical care and expertise. I found her superbly professional and knowledgeable. And this is a more minor issue, but I found the fact that her offices are located in the ground floor of a building that was formerly a large home very comforting. The examination rooms were all properly clinical, certainly, but the rooms had real furniture and were warm and comfortable. In some ways this felt like visiting a traditional family doctor. Medical care has become, if anything, too impersonal and clinical. I really appreciated how Dr. Larson took care to create an environment for her patients that felt more like a welcoming space for her practice. I really can't recommend her highly enough.

This is a crazy unacceptable detail, and to make it worse they never told me of the delay. When I asked for a phone number to the leadership team, the PA was done within an hour. Previously I had to call / send portal message 4 times for a refill and was then told they were back up and I should call every time I need a refill instead of using the refill line or portal refill. Why can't they hire adequate staff?
