Today I went to a job interview by the Portland Jetport. I went to the bus stop and ran to catch…read morean oncoming Bus. I knew that the bus was going in the direction of the Mall and not towards my home, but I figured I could just ride the long way. The bus stopped. The driver told me that he "wasn't going into Portland" (nonsense, of course, because the route is a circle), and that I needed to cross the street and wait for the bus going towards Portland. I decided not to argue and crossed the street. I waited THIRTY MINUTES for another bus. Finally a bus "going into town" (which, of course, they ALL DO EVENTUALLY) picked me up. Got dropped off at Westgate as planned and walked the rest of the way. That driver could have let me on his bus. But he didn't. Instead, he made me wait in the sun for THIRTY MINUTES! Nice new Busses, same old BS from public transportation. They know we need it, so they feel entitled to crap all over us. I wish I had gotten the drivers name. METRO might want to tell you they're "new and improved," but they're still the same unreliable trash they always were, with more comfortable seats.

Maaaaybe 3 only cause sometimes their drivers are consistently nice, but that'd be pushing it. Here, in bullet-point form, I will explain why the Portland Metro is receiving two starts: * It is ALWAYS late. ALWAYS. Shit weather or not, if you are expecting to get someone on time, plan to be at the bus stop when the too early bus would arrive because you will show up at your destination with moments to spare. Case in point: A few days before Christmas I waited at a #5 stop post the post office on Park Ave. My plan was perfect - get the city bus, hop on a Concord Trailways bus, meet my brother in South Station and get a RIDE home to the South Shore of MA. A RIDE! Not another hour on public transit. So, I get to my stuf 15 (FIFTEEN!) minutes early and patiently wait. and wait. and wait. I call the customer service number on the sign and the man informs me that due to the past snow and the shitty road conditions that the bus is running behind. "No problem," I think "I still have time." Another 15 minutes goes by, then 15 more and I realize that I will NOT be making it to my scheduled bus to Boston and that the city bus just decided to not show up on this particular route - thought I saw four of the #5 buses heading on the other side of the street. *THEY SOMETIMES JUST NEVER COME!!! - - - there have been many times when I've gotten to a stop and waited, and thought maybe i was at the wrong stop but saw the sign so continued waiting anyway, and then realized that the bus was just never going to show up. * The printed maps can be difficult to follow. If you don't have the topographic map of Portland committed to memory, then it can be hard to figure out where the bus will let you off closed to where you need to go or vice versa, although to their defense i guess there are a lot of stops and printing them all could be costly...or something? * The people who ride with you - this can either make or break your experience. Case in Point part two -Once I had to go to the mall so I waited at the Metro station on elm street. I board my #5, happy because it was on time and not too crowded. A woman in a wheelchair embarks the bus. The driver kindly lowers the lift down and our bus does it's shimmy and shake because face it, we're not riding state of the art here. Said woman in wheelchair wasn't exactly slim and trim and when the wheelchair ramp rose to get her on the bus it GOT STUCK. As in, she was strapped into the lift and the lift decided it had it's final moments and pooped out. I'm sure she was mortified so it's why I'm trying to refrain from being mean, but we ended up having to board another bus and I was no longer on time. *Once I road the bus to South Portland and on the way back the driver decided to stop at a Hannaford and go inside. I was the only one on the bus and wasn't sure what was happening. * This fits under who rides : another time, the #4, which I take to get to USM, was fairly crowded and I sat next to this crabby looking lady. When my stop was coming near I asked her if she could pull the stop line thing for me. She turned her head, grunted, and made no motion to do so. I'M SORRY I WAS ASKING YOU TO PERFORM MORE PHYSICAL ACTIVITY IN A SECOND THAN YOU PROBABLY GET ALL DAY! *I think I've gotten the flu two separate times from riding on this petri dish of public service. FINALLY, ride the bus if you have to. It's my only option since neither my boyfriend or I have a car. Mostly the riders are nice, and I only pay fifty-cents cause I'm a student, but if you have other ways to get around, take it. I can't wait for bike weather!

Tagging luggage according to Logan terminal was a good system. The driver and folks at the counter were friendly. The bus seating was clean and comfy. Concord is relatively high tech for a coach bus business with wifi on board, an automated safety video, and automated boarding calls in the bus terminal. Where to line up and when to arrive is clear. Water bottles are offered as you're boarding. On the bus, you have a small restroom, drink holders, outlets, and a couple trash cans. The location of the terminal in Portland is central and co-located with Amtrak. The restroom at this transportation center is nice.

It's a great option to get to/from BOS for those more direct and international trips. Also a great…read moreoption for car-free journeys to see the BoSox at Fenway. Cleanliness isn't quite up to operating room standards, but it's generally good enough. I will say the staff is by and large extremely friendly (and helpful). Inner city Greyhound terminals in DC, Chicago, Philly, even Seattle are miserable. Concord may not go as many places as Greyhound or Peter Pan, but Concord is amongst the best bus experiences I've had.

I only took this over Concord Coach as it fit my schedule better. Next time I'm going to plan better to avoid taking this bus at all costs. The bus was clean and comfortable. There were numerous stops, unlike Concord. I booked on-line. There is a 20 or 25 dollar penalty to switch your ticket, even if you'd just booked it. Now, THAT is customer service!

We had a connection in Chicago (to Anchorage) but our flight from Portland was delayed so we would miss the connection. She started rebooking us, but the system went down before she completed it. That left us without tickets! And the next flight out, was going to leave soon. She stayed through her lunch break to help us. She figured out a Portland to Philly to Seattle, where we spent the night and flew to Anchorage the next morning. Her name is Kathryn, and she went above and beyond her job to help us. As a result we really only missed a half day of our dream vacation. Thank you so much Kathryn! And I hope you and your family get that chance to go soon, it was totally worth it!

I love this little jetport…read more I have so many memories flying in here to see my grandparents 30 years ago. Almost nothing has changed in the best way. It's the easiest airport to navigate because there is only one " terminal." you check in, breeze through TSA, and casually walk to your gate. If you rented a car, pick up and drop off our directly across the street from the airport, about a 30 second walk. It couldn't be more convenient. Everyone is super friendly, as are the majority of Mainers. This airport is always a pleasure. My only complaint... I used to love the live lobster tank at the airport. It was a fun novelty. Bring it back!

They do what they said they would at the price quoted with a high level of professionalism and competence by their drivers. These involved: A hospital to the airport limo to coincide with a ride for a cat and woman (who is without peer) handler to the airport and returning her home. Delivering pizza from local well regarded pizzeria's to the hospital staff. Rides to the airport for friends. I know they are excellent because every one of my family and friends who were riders rave about them. (I suggest you take that to the bank. I know these people and it's best to treat them well. Really. Good advice.) They say "Just use them !"

Parking is usually easy at the Portland Transportation Center (except at peak times, like school vacations or holiday weekends) and is reasonably priced. This winter I have taken Concord Coach Plus twice from between Portland to NYC, and it is a fantastic service -- there's absolutely no better, more comfortable, more efficient way to get to the heart of Manhattan. Also, a shout out for Concord Coach's customer service, from the drivers to the staff in the main office -- they are polite and put the customer first.
