5 stars without hesitation for Rick Field. Rick installed a new door between my family room and garage, as the old one was almost falling off the hinges. Being a woodworking hobbyist myself, one of my pet peeves is a lack of attention to detail. And with Rick, that was a complete non-issue. He did great work. The gap between the door and frame is almost perfectly uniform all the way around, the weather seal doesn't have any small gaps, and the door is perfectly level in the jamb. While working on this job (which took about 2.5 hours) he ran out to the hardware store to pick up necessary supplies (and provided a receipt), kept the house clean, and was a pleasure to talk to. I'm generally too lazy to write reviews for anything but I had such a great experience with Rick Field that I had to add my two cents. The fan in my master bathroom stopped working and I had a kitchen drawer that had broken. I called Rick and he very thoroughly laid out my options before even coming onsite. He said that if the fan was broken, he could go buy a replacement for me and install it for a certain price but that if I wanted to save some money, I could buy the fan online and he'd only charge me for labor. I immediately liked him. Then, he came out to my house to check things out. He immediately determined that the fan wasn't broken and that it had just been a tripped circuit. He flipped the circuit breaker and it started working! He could have easily told me that the fan needed replacing and I would have gladly paid. Then, he looked at my drawer and said that he'd need to do some research since the broken part was not a common one. After doing a bunch of research and even going to his friend's shop, he wasn't able to locate the part. So he gave me three options which involved him cutting some custom pieces of wood to fix the drawer. He recommended the option that took less time but ended up working great. The drawer is more sturdy now than when it was new! Lastly, he fixed a few towel racks in the bathrooms and even supplied some extra drywall anchors to fix any more that might come loose. As an owner of a few rental properties, I know how rare it is to find such an honest, reliable, and capable repairman. I will definitely be using Rick's services again and would recommend him to anyone. read more

Very pleased with Rick. We called him for problem with a door. He fixed it quickly, then told us he charged a minimum of one hour, so why not see if we had anything else for him to fix. We thought of a couple other things. One item he fixed and on the other one (another door), he told us yes, he could fix it, but it would be an hour or an hour and a half and the end fix wouldn't really get us that much more than we had now, so not worth the money to fool with it. Wow! We really appreciated his honesty. We will be keeping a "to do list" from now on and call him as needed. Finally! We hired Rick to come to our home to cut out an area for our dishwasher and install it. He was very professional and was the first to respond of the businesses I reached to on Yelp. When he arrived to our house he brought a campanion with him and the two of them were finished with the work in just over an hour. They cleaned up the area and offered to haul away all the debris. Rick and Matt did an excellent job installing a new 24" wall oven for us. They had to add additional framing to an existing cabinet to accommodate the new appliance before installing (the old unit was 26"). Rick arrived with all of the power tools needed for the job - basically a shop on wheels - and knew exactly what to do especially the electrical work. Super efficient work including clean-up and reminded us to run the oven before first use (not sure if we would have read the manual/figured that out). They are very nice and came wearing masks which I'm sure was difficult to do during the heat of the day. Pricing is reasonable and we will definitely call Rick for all of our future needs. Very highly recommended. Rick just finished some work this morning. Last time we used him was about 10 years ago when we first moved in. Same Rick - friendly, helpful, efficient, and great results. Appliance installs, leaks, squeaky stairs, busted door jams, replacement doors, attic fan, deck repair, sinks/faucets, he's always had us covered. Rick is the best handyman that we have used. He came on time, was extremely helpful and made sure we were satisfied with the work. One of the jobs that we had him do was to install a sink in our garage. We got two quotes from plumbers and then Rick. His price was significantly lower than the quotes we received from the plumbers for the exact same work. We also had him install a new door from our garage to the side yard. He did great work. He showed back up the next day and gave me some cash stating that he felt I had overpaid him for the work. We had previously agreed on the price, which is what I paid him and I thought was a fair price. I was not expecting this at all. With almost all contractors I have worked with, I have been billed more than the agreed price, not less! You will not find a more punctual, honest and quality worker. He is great! read more

Well, since the last review, I have decided to call Rick again to schedule an appointment to fix the same issue as I was busy travelling and did not have time to deal with it. I called yesterday and left a vm stating the same problem and wanted to schedule an appointment. He called back in the evening and left a message. Again I appreciated the prompt response. My only compliant is that he said in his message that he is all booked up (again!) till September 20, which is almost two months from now!! Who can wait that long for a service, or else one wouldn't be calling professionals for help! I am sure Rick is very good and that's why he is all booked up, but this is frustrating to me and I'd never known it's so hard to get a good handy man who can respond promptly to fix the problem!! read more

Rick Field, who owns Residential Repair is absolutely the best handyman / home repair guy I have ever met. If you need light construction anywhere in the south bay, Residential Repair & Maintenance is the best place to call. Rick has worked on my home, my parents home (I think my mom wants to adopt him), my sister's home, the homes of several of my neighbors and friends in Saratoga, San Jose, Cupertino, Palo Alto, on some rentals my neighbor owns, on my dentist's office and home -- the list goes on and on. I am always feel comfortable recommending him. Rick is really reliable and communicates well. If he says he will be there at 9, he is. Every time. I love not having to take a half day off work to wait around for him. He also works really fast. He is really great about getting things done right the first time. I have never had to call him back because something wasn't done right. I first met Rick twenty years ago when he was working as a manufacturing engineer in Silicon Valley (I was a junior guy at a different company and he worked for one of our suppliers). Rick only did handyman work on the side then. Several years later, he decided he liked handyman work better than working for a big company, so he started Residential Repair & Maintenance. Over the years, I have had Rick do electrical work, plumbing, cabinet installations, flooring, a bathroom remodel, install fans, frame walls, put in telephone and computer networking lines, the list goes on and on. Best thing is that if the problem requires some creativity, Rick turns on his engineering brain and comes up with a wonderfully creative solution. If you hire Rick to do a project that requires more than one person, you will likely get to meet one of his college student sons. They are really fine young men - clean cut, eagle scouts, polite, no foul language or smoking and they even clean up after themselves. You don't meet young men like this very often, especially in construction. It is great to have guys around that I can trust around my children. Several years ago, I moved the family to Hong Kong for a job assignment. I left my 20 year old daughter and her friend living in our house and I had Rick do the repair and maintenance. He scheduled regular "walk throughs" with the girls to see what needed attention and he responded when they broke things. The house was actually in better shape when I got home than when I left (and my daughter later ended up inviting Rick and his lovely wife Lorri to her wedding). Rick Field is a handy man/contractor and is fabulous on jobs of pretty much any size. I've used him for over 3 of years now and LOVE him. He shows up when he says he's going to, he's polite and courteous, he goes through my punch list and then handles it ~ it's done right the first time. He protects floors, furniture, etc as he goes, and cleans up after himself! He's a great trouble shooter and thinks outside the box. He works quickly, efficiently, and effectively ~ his van has supplies at all times that can handle the basics in the moment or he'll purchase whatever you need for the job. I was searching for a reliable and honest repairman to put up our fla tscreen tv above the fireplace and am I glad I went with Rick. He responded quickly, explained throughly and went out of his way to come to our house free of charge and let us know what wires etc we would need for the day of the installation. He even offered to lend us his tools if we ever needed them as we happen to live close to his home. On the day of the installation Rick and his crew were clean, fast and friendly. Rick and his team did good job, thank you! I found RR&M on Yelp about 2 months ago, so I called them. In his greeting, he disclosed the hourly charge, so I had some idea. He returned my phone call within 24 hours explain his schedule, I might have to wait for 4 weeks, I said it's OK(I needed somebody to repair bathroom faucet and exhaust fan, not urgent). After couple of hours he called me again saying that he has time the next day. Rick arrived on time, explained to me again regarding the charges & I accepted. He took a look and found the faucet was pretty old and may only be available at one special shop so he asked me to get it and he would change it once it arrived. The exhaust motor was dead so it had to be replaced. He gave me the option to buy it or he could; so I let him buy it. Rick did not charge me anything that day as he had only given me estimates. He got the motor and called and replaced it. I was not able to get the faucet replacement as they are not available (old model) so Rick said we had to replace the sink, which I'd have to buy. I called Rick after I purchased the sink and he gave me a date 3 weeks from that day. Today was the day and Rick came with his team. They installed the sink and charged for 1&1/2 hr. plus $40 for parts. Mission accomplished. I would recommend him to anyone. read more

Rick came to my house today to install a bathroom ceiling fan. He was very friendly and right on time. He even called yesterday to confirm he was coming today. When he looked at the fan we had ordered, he told me it was too small for my bathroom so I would need to order a different fan. He brought up his ladder and measured the dimensions of the fan that I would need to order. He told me to order the correct fan and he would come back and install it.
