We normally adopted adult dogs who came with a minimum of skills: usually at least partially housebroken, could tolerate collars and leashes, etc. We recently adopted a 6 month old puppy thinking "How hard could this be?" Turns out, damn hard! Our frustration levels were reaching all new highs and we knew we had to do something. I had been watching some online videos from Brooke, which are all very useful with easy to follow instructions, but we decided to contact Brooke and get her help to jumpstart our training. Update as of March 2021: Brooke has worked a literal miracle with our reactive/fearful German Shepherd, Kira. When we started training with Brooke in June 2020, we would be an entire baseball field apart from another dog and Kira would freak out... TODAY, we worked with 2 different dogs (walking across the street from each other) and Kira handled it like a pro. What I thought was impossible, Brooke has made possible. We also saw a cat on our morning walk today, and Kira was able to calmly observe the cat while in a "down" command. I was floored and did NOT expect that to happen. After thinking about how far Kira has come while training with Brooke, I knew I had to update my review. Over the last 10 months Brooke has worked so hard with Kira (and has trained me too!), and the results are incredible. Brooke is unfazed when Kira starts acting like a crazed beast, and has been able to show us how to stay calm in situations that are "scary" for us. Don't get me wrong: If you have a reactive dog, it takes hard work and serious dedication to training, but it's one of the most rewarding feelings once you start having these breakthroughs. I got Bear from a pound at only 9 weeks old, she is a German Shepherd mix of some kind, and she had a tough go of it before getting adopted by our family. She was severely underweight and scared of most people and other dogs. It was my first dog so I wanted to do some training and positive reinforcement training was super important to me. After looking at a few places in the desert, I realized a lot of places advertise positive reinforcement training, but few actually practice/teach it. And then my neighbor recommended Brooke and I am SO happy she did! We started my little pup early as she was pretty crazy/impulsive prior to our training; she would run nonstop around the house and growl and snap, and she was a little too smart for her own good, she was also TERRIFIED of new people. Within the first five minutes of our first session with Brooke, Bear was trying to crawl all over her and be her friend. That was the first moment I realized that it was a perfect match. Brooke is so patient and encouraging, especially for a first time dog owner like myself, and she loves dogs so, so much! After only 3 lessons Bear has all but stopped her zooming nature in the house, is getting so good at meeting new people, and keeping her crazier impulses under control.
