Omg - 10x YES! You ever wanted to get trained on some tools. This is the place they have a variety of selections available and you can also view those online along with the dates. Highly suggest doing the tour before you register for a class and or membership because you will get a discount on your first class. The trainer was super attentive and will help you build up your confidence even if you came nervous like I did. You always hearing horror stories about things not going right when people use tools even after watching YouTube channels. I attended the three saw class which included on hand training and techniques on the panel, miter, and table saw. Please note in order to use their tools outside of training you would need to become a member which is still a great opportunity for someone who's trying to start or began a new crafting and or trade. Did I mention that there's two shop dogs there? Yes, they're two bloodhounds that walks around in the lobby. Unfortunately they're not always there but I believe they are in the a.m. so if you do a tour make sure you say hi and they have treats available. Strongly recommend this place. I didn't know the right words, so they snickered and demeaned me. Then they repeated what I said very slowly, but by bit, with a snide grin. One person will tell you they don't offer a service, then another person will say they do. Their website is evidently wrong according to them, but they can't fix it. read more

JE'TONE CHERENE ALEXANDER taught a sewing class to myself and a co- worker and it was awesome. We are both maker/tinkering professionals from Imagination Station Science Museum in Toledo Ohio. We have both been called upon to use the skills she taught us a few times and they have not faded in the intervening year. She was kind, thorough and knowledgeable. She was an excellent teacher (this comes from someone who teaches every day). I recommend her workshops highly. I will admit I have not had a bad experience yet with any of their classes or tool check out curriculum, I can honestly recommend if you want to learn the fiber arts take one of her camps or classes. read more

Great place to meet and do projects. The community is very friendly, and will help with projects, and Fix-It-Fridays are fun. Of the tools, I use the laser cutter the most -- it's amazing how many Halloween costumes need fabric or acrylic shapes cut out, or games that can use new custom pieces cut. My daughter really gets a kick out of using the auto-embroidery machine to stitch words and pictures onto gifts. I'm glad to have this place nearby. read more

I was disappointed with the facilities when I visited. The rooms were not as cleanly as they could be, whether because of messy patrons or understaffing, it isn't clear. The monthly rate seems exorbitant for someone who only wants access to the sewing machines and laser cutter. For those of us who will never use the wood shop, metal shop, CNC machines, etc., it seems unreasonable to be paying for access to them. Finally, the woman who lead our tour group was quite inattentive. She seemed disengaged, and was less than knowledgeable in answering our questions. On the plus side, they do seem to have a wide range of equipment available. The "crafts" section has several large lab-type tables for working on, and a designated ironing station for sewers. read more

Note that I am not a woodworker or "crafty" person. The Ann Arbor Maker-Works is amazing. It is staffed with experts who are patient, passionate and eager to teach. The environment cultivates learning and celebrating people's progress. I first took Al's ShopBot class to help my son make sign trailmarkers for a Boy Scout project. They came out great. 3 months ago I I took Kirsten's laser class and I am now making beautiful things out of wood and engraving glasses. Great classes, great teachers. I've taken all the wood classes, now it's on to metal, sewing, and 3-D printing! If I can make cool things, anyone can. I highly recommend! read more

You can literally make almost anything here if you have the vision and the ambition to complete your project. I discover something new every time I'm there. Fix It Friday is a terrific opportunity for the Ann Arbor community! Last week I dusted off several broken items sitting in the basement, where they had been for months, awaited repair. Not knowing how to repair them, I took an mp3 player and a couple of flashlights over to Maker Works to see what the folks there could do. My experience was awesome. Kc was gracious and capable, easily fixing two of them and showing me where the third was corroded and broken, ready to be discarded. But even better, they have ways of reusing the electronic parts in many useless gadgets. It was educational as well as effective and enjoyable. I highly recommend this free service. read more
