I had a fantastic experience with Karen! I first had her do my hair/makeup for my engagement shoot, which was the first time I had ever had my hair or makeup professionally done. I had brought some example photos of what I was looking for, and Karen made the end result better than I had hoped for. As someone who doesn't know much about hair/makeup, I appreciated how helpful Karen was in guiding me through the whole process. I then went back to her for the wedding trial; we tried one hairstyle up and one down. I had always thought I would do my hair down, because that's what I tend to be most comfortable with, but I was so delightfully surprised with the loose updo that Karen did for me, that I ended up choosing that for the actual wedding day. On that day, Karen and Pennie arrived at my apartment right on time to do my hair/makeup as well as that for six other ladies. They were friendly yet focused, and they finished right on time. Karen is hands-down the best hair and makeup artist you could ever ask for, especially for Asian hair and makeup. She has nailed the art of soft, smoky, yet natural glam that makes you look like the absolute best version of yourself. I had been following her for years on social media after seeing many of my acquaintances use her services for weddings and special events. I hired her for both my engagement shoot and wedding day and it was the best decision I ever made. She answered all my questions before each appointment, and is quick, cheerful, and very helpful. At the appointments, she glanced at hair and makeup styles that I had saved on my phone and replicated them in a way that best suited my facial structure. On the morning of my wedding, Karen and her assistant, Dani, arrived bright and early despite traveling all the way down to San Diego, where my wedding was located. Her rates are so reasonable (on par with most artists' friends and family discounted price) that the nominal travel fee was worth it. My bridal party was somewhat large (bride, five bridesmaids, two mothers) and each person had her own preferred hair and makeup style. Karen and Dani flawlessly executed each look, from natural makeup to intense glam, with updos, braids, curls, textured hair, extensions, etc. Despite all the different requests, Karen and Dani were extremely efficient and finished right on time. My mother, who almost never wears makeup, refused to wear false lashes until Karen showed her how easy and painless they could be. Two of my bridesmaids are hair and makeup artists who do wedding hair/makeup and are extremely particular about getting their own hair and makeup done. Both of them were beyond impressed with Karen and her team, and I have heard nothing but gushing compliments from all of the bridesmaids and mothers since the wedding. Our wedding pictures just came back and everyone still looked flawless by the end of the night, despite the 18-hour day, sticky humidity, and nonstop dancing. I loved Karen's work so much that I'm posting a review for her here and on WeddingWire.com. Karen was recommended to me by a friend who got married last year - and I'm so glad she did! Karen was very professional and responsive in her communications, and was flexible in trying to work with my schedule when I booked my trial session with her. Since I was planning my Southern California wedding from NY, I especially appreciated when vendors were flexible with scheduling in-person meetings with me for the couple of times I was in town before the wedding. I also researched and considered other makeup and hair artists, but I liked that Karen understood the "natural, but enhanced" look I was going for during my trial, so I decided to book her for my wedding day. Karen's prices are also competitive with other makeup and hair artists in the area, and she even offered a little bit of a discount for booking my bridal party's hair and makeup with her. On my wedding day, Karen and her assistant Lyly showed up on-time and were very professional and friendly as they did our hair and make-up. I barely slept the night before and also had a bit of a cold, so I was a little worried about looking very tired. But Karen did a phenomenal job in transforming me from tired to gorgeous for my wedding day! Karen and Lyly also did the makeup and hair for my three bridesmaids and my mom - and they all looked GREAT as well! My groom also loved my hair and makeup. He typically doesn't like it when I look like I'm wearing a lot of makeup, but Karen did such a great job that I didn't look like I was wearing a ton of makeup at all, but I still looked good in pictures. Karen gave me a touch-up kit before she left, which was useful for that time between the ceremony and reception when I wanted to freshen up a bit (though, Karen did such a great job that I didn't really need much touching up). I hired Karen to do my hair & makeup for my wedding based on these yelp reviews. She & her team were awesome! I looked like me, just a photo-shopped amazing, 100x better version of me! :) A few things I was a little concerned going into the whole thing: She wasn't super responsive to my emails & I was a teensy bit worried (I think part of the time leading up to my wedding she was on maternity leave)- but she showed up on the day of on time & ready to rock & roll (& the whole ordeal took less time than expected, which I very much appreciated). When I had asked for a certain hairstyle & it didn't look as good on me as I thought it would, she was patient & super nice & redid it until I was happy (same went for my bridesmaids & fam members). Also, her website shows mostly asian girls-- I'm not asian, my hair is curly, my skin is a mess & my eyes & nose are gigantic. I was a little worried that her magical makeover powers wouldn't work on me-- but thankfully, my worries were misplaced & she made me look amazing. One of the reasons I hired her was because a lot of bridesmaids she worked on had good reviews-- a lot of times I feel like the bride looks amazing but the bridesmaids don't look much better than if they had done their own makeup-- what a waste of time & money. She did my mom's makeup & she & the 2 other makeup artists she brought a long did my bridesmaids that wanted their hair/makeup done, my mother, my mother in law, & my 2 sisters in law. I really felt that each person looked more amazing than the next (if you are one of those brides that doesn't want your bridesmaids to look good, watch out, all mine looked gorgeous!!! ;-p). My mom keeps saying that the wedding was the best she's ever looked & even asked me today for Karen's info because she wants to ask her for a makeup tutorial. She also gave me a little pouch of touch up stuff-- which I mostly didn't even end up using because my makeup stayed perfect throughout the night (even though the dancing, crying & sweating). On price, a little higher than I wanted to spend for me, but somehow a little less for the other girls-- so it evened out. Def cheaper & better than a lot of the makeup artists that I looked into. Her prices are on her site & are very straight forward which I came to appreciate very much during the whole wedding planning thing. From the trial to the wedding day, Karen was a pleasure to work with. She masterfully handled my notoriously frizzy and crazy amount of hair and made it look beautiful, taking the time to understand what I wanted. I don't trust many people with my hair, mostly because people don't really know how to handle its thickness and curls, but Karen did! Not only that, but I felt like I could've asked her for any hairstyle, and she would've been able to come through! For make-up, I wanted a very natural look, and she totally delivered! It was hard to even tell I had make-up on which I think is the real goal of make-up in the first place (unless you want really bold looks, which I'm sure she can handle). i love karen's work! LOVE LOVE LOVE it! my first encounter with karen and her crew was at my best friend's wedding, where i was the MOH. karen was super focused and professional, quietly and diligently working her magic and so i didnt really learn too much about her except that she provides fantastic results, is great with time constraints, and has awesome prices. my second encounter with karen was my wedding trial session, which i scheduled to be the same day as my engagement photo shoot because i was so confident that i loved her work. during this experience, karen and i chatted the entire time! about the engagement shoot, honeymoons, family backgrounds, wedding details, wedding fears, etc etc etc. she felt like an old friend that i hadn't caught up with in a long time. it was nice to start the day with laughs and smiles to help set my mood for the engagement shoot later on that day. before sending me off, karen gave me a little organza baggie of touch-up goodies. although i had to reapply the lip gloss a couple times from all the camera kisses the photographer requested of me and my fiance, everything else stayed perfect for the next 10 hours... until i reluctantly washed off the makeup and got ready for bed. the next day, karen even sent me an email with the before/after photos she took of me for me to admire, a bridal accessories store recommendation (since she knew i was still looking for a good hair piece), and to see how my engagement shoot went. awww... i thought... my new fwend. my third encounter with karen was 2 weekends ago for my BIG DAY (finally!). again, her team arrived on time (15 minutes earlier than start time in order to setup), worked diligently and punctually for the next 7 hours (i had a total of 12 ladies needing hair and makeup), and was still able to chat and joke with all the girls to ease wedding day jitters. the team finished with time to spare and almost all the girls had plenty of time to see if they wanted any touch ups, alterations, etc. a couple of my girls had tattoos and karen's team covered 'em up for free for me. i especially appreciated the fact that karen's team's expertise was diverse and were able to make the moms feel fabulous too. my girls looked gorgeous and (although im sure every bride gets this at her wedding) everyone complimented me on how beautiful i looked that day. karen's prices, like everyone's in the wedding industry, tends to increase over time (so book her quickly!). however, that being said, her prices (for her skill set) are extremely reasonable...a bargain actually. additionally, her professionalism, punctuality, and patience were all so impressive... i didnt even have the opportunity to test out my inner bridezilla. boo hoo. read more

I was referred to Karen by a friend and I am SO glad I chose her to do my hair and makeup for my engagement pictures and wedding. First, I loved how easy it was to get in touch with her and how fast she responded. For our wedding day, I wanted a flawless natural look. I had so many compliments from different people and most importantly, I felt beautiful. Our wedding had occurred on a very hot day with the heat wave coming to an end, and my airbrush makeup still looked great by end of day. Karen did wonders to my hair and in applying makeup for my wedding in August 2017! I chose Karen because I liked her portfolio with Asian long hair up-dos and applying makeup that looked natural. Karen is also easy to work with and her terms of services were reasonable and fair. Due to time conflicts, I couldn't secure Karen for my engagement shoot and had to use someone else. Boy do I wish my schedule clicked with Karen's because I was looking my age (older) and unrecognizable to my fiancé using someone else's services. They had an EARLY morning call and began around 5am because I had a traditional Chinese tea ceremony that started at 9am. I was planning my wedding while out of state and found Karen online. I decided on her b/c her before/after photos looked good - the girls looked beautiful but still looked like themselves. Also b/c her prices were good compared them to other artists in the area. She's very patient and listened to my requests for hair and makeup. Quick to respond to e-mails. She's also very friendly. Her and her assistant were at the venue early and were very organized. She did several of my bridesmaids and my MIL in addition to myself. Everyone was very happy with their results.
