Makimono is one of my favourite places for dining on Japanese cuisine. Their food quality, service, and value have always been outstanding. I recently had dinner with a friend at their Ajax location and we may have over-indulged, but it was hard to resist all the goodness featured on their menu. As we dined, their robot passed our table several times, delivering dishes to other tables, including things we could/should have ordered. It all looked so good! Our over-indulgence included too many dishes to mention but they included sushi, sashimi, udon, tempura, maki, dim sum, and much more. Tips: - You place your order on an iPad and food comes to your table like magic. - There's currently a promotion going on at this location. Dine in at this restaurant, spend at least $50 on your meal, and get a $10 voucher off your bill till May 9, 2026. - This eatery has an all-you-can-eat ice cream bar! This past Monday evening, I broke out of the house to have a dinner feast with a friend. We ordered a lot off the menu, guilty of eating with our eyes. I used to drop by this eatery maybe fifteen years ago fairly often. It was nice to return. I had no problem finding a parking spot fairly close to the main entrance. I backed into a spot and walked into the restaurant. We got these drinks: - Sapporo draft 20 oz - Diet Coke Refills on pop are free. I certainly took advantage of it! So refreshing. It had a bit of heat and I dipped everything in that amazing coconut curry. - Any protein on a skewer will not disappoint. - Chicken and mushrooms was a comforting dish. - The two hand rolls were excellent! There was only one dish that wasn't great. It was the beef steak that was more on the chewy side. There's something for everyone at this eatery. I thought that I couldn't shovel any dessert after our feast. I saw the all-you-can-eat ice cream bar and my stomach ignored now full it felt. I'd return for the desserts alone. We enjoyed these desserts: - Fried bananas (2 x 2 pcs) - Ice cream (orange, cotton candy, cookies and cream) - Tiramisu cake - Mini macaroon - Coconut pudding - Mango pudding - Creamsicle pudding The ice cream bar is the perfect end to your meal. My friend said to put the fried bananas in with the ice cream, which tastes like a banana split. He was right! This place has a couple of sushi robots. One had a cat face, which brought a birthday dessert to someone celebrating that evening. The other one was shorter and didn't have any face on it. I used the washroom before I left. I appreciate good, delicious sushi served at a good price and Makimono in Ajax delivers that. However the experience wasn't perfect because there was a let down in service. I went there on a Friday night and it was understandably busy, and our all-you-can-eat order was quickly coming out of the kitchen. There was a dirty plate that needed to be swapped out but the server replaced it quickly. There's also an adorable Robot Server who roamed the aisles delivering plates of food with the assistance of a human server. As dinner carried on, our meal came to a halt and we sat there for almost 30 minutes until we flagged down a server and informed her of dishes yet to come. Not one person checked up on us during that 30 minutes, or inform us that we would have to wait a bit longer for the rest of our meal. When we asked they said it was "coming soon". A few minutes later, the sushi pizza and two orders of Maki rolls finally arrived. I like the sushi here, it tastes fresh, it's delicious and the plates are artistically arranged. The price is reasonable for all-you-can-eat and the portion sizes are what I would expect for paying that price. I appreciated the decor and the ambiance, while nothing elaborate, the eye catching sun-like display in the ceiling caught my attention. I would come back, just don't make me wait for it. read more

It was my first time trying AYCE at Makimono. My mom and I went for lunch. We ordered lots of different dishes to try off the iPad. They had lots of options (surprising, because some places have a limited menu for lunch AYCE, as opposed to dinner). Quality of food and portions were great. They have a self serve ice cream station, with lots of mini desserts to choose from. Staff were friendly, attentive and efficient. I definitely recommend coming to this location! read more

Came here to try for a la carte and not AYCE which was priced around $38 pp. We decided to get some bento boxes instead and here was what we ordered: Chicken Teriyaki Bento Box 3-$20 + upgrade california roll to spicy salmon for $6.85. Decent bento but the spicy salmon roll (6pcs) is definitely more on the filler side with good size chunk of salmon, avocado and rice. Beef Short Rib Bento Box- $21 + upgrade california roll to spicy scallop roll-$2.15 (6pcs). Based on the price point, I wish we got more short rib as I believe we got 6x cut up pieces. Both bento comes with salad/miso soup and the bento consist of rice, veggie/shrimp tempura a few pieces, the maki roll and your protein. If you get the ayce, there is a robot that would bring your order. Its not terrible food where we may or may not come back... Its decent. read more

My family and I came for AYCE sushi and we enjoyed our time as the sushi and side dishes were great. My daughter enjoyed the robot delivery experience. The staff were very friendly. I have been to countless of all you can eat sushi restaurants, this place is by far the worst of them all. The food here tasted like they have been sitting in the freezer for months. The sea food tasted rancid, their meats were freezer burned and worst of all, my favorite food the fried tofu tasted sour. This Makimono location is pretty good in comparison to it's Pickering location. It is a solid AYCE sushi restaurant in the Durham Region. The atmosphere is good, the service is prompt. They offer the standard AYCE menu, but what sets them apart is their vegetarian options. They have a great Mango Roll, Yam, Tempura Roll and a couple of other great options. This Makimoto has AYCE available now. Honestly, all the food was fantastic. The green dragon and mango rolls were perfect. The hot foods were hot, crunchy (spring rolls were ordered) and flavourful. The sashimi was a nice thickness. It made me very happy. Some places cut it like it's a thick steak. This location wasnt too thin or thick. The servers were very kind and I appreciated that they were quick in their service. The only reason I feel apprehensive about giving 5 stars is because when we arrived (a party of 5), they tried to seat us in an area that was less than 6 feet from the other guests. The set up would have had a group right next to us and another group right behind us. I had called in advance to ensure that proper social distancing was happening for our and their safety. When this was brought up, they were hesitant to place us anywhere else as 2 sections where closed due to not enough servers. Eventually, we were seated correctly. The restaurant wasnt too busy, so it was easier to do. All in all, I really enjoyed the experience and I will definitely go again. read more

This place used to be good, I don't know what happened to them. I went last week (September, 2020) to pick up lunch. I got spicy salmon rolls, miso soup and salad in a combo. The rice on my rolls were STALE. I don't know how old the rice must've been for it to be stale, I had to throw away the rolls. The miso soup was so watered down it tasted like water. Also threw it away. Basically had to throw away my entire meal. That being said, the whitby location and Pickering location are much much better. You actually get edible food that's flavourful. The Ajax location is the worst and they should shut it down, it's so awful. read more

From the lunch and dinner all you can eat to the menu items & bento boxes, I've experienced everything this restaurant has to offer! It is very inconsistent with their food quality, their lunch all you can eat is very limited and bland. The menu items are good, but it is definitely not priced right for the food you actually get - it is basic, western-oriental style dishes. What is worth it??: Their dinner all you can eat is the has the most aesthetic plating compared to their other dish offers. It also has the widest selection of side-dishes, main courses, & varieties of sushi/sashimi/maki rolls. However, after a while, everything tends to taste the same - just do not overdo it when you order!! The bento boxes, especially the lunch special boxes, hands-down offers you the absolute bang for your buck! The chicken/salmon teriyaki is the way to go, ranging from $11-$13. Food is decent, reliable Pan-Asian items like sushi, noodles and stir fries. The first time I ordered, I enjoyed both the food and the service, which led me to return and order a second time. On this second occasion, the lady that picked up the phone and took my order was so incredibly rude and curt. I liked the food enough that I proceeded with the order. After all, I had already ordered. She was curt and brisk on pick up, telling me to "go wait there" but the food was ready so I picked it up. Today, on this third occasion, I called in another order and she was so rude that I declined to continue. I checked - it's not issue of English as a second language. Why would anyone order Teriyaki Beef when you can have Black Pepper Beef?! Their All-You-Can-Eat buffet has an incredible selection as does their regular menu. There are a few Makimono locations but this one, by far, is my favourite. The service is excellent, the sashimi is fresh and the atmosphere is pleasant. read more

Service was subpar, no one came back around to ask about refills. Ordered our food from iPad, our sushi was never delivered. Asked about it 40min later and then brought out - nothing high end - a basic California roll. No sauces for Japanese dishes, like yum yum sauce. The Thai beef smelled like wet dog, couldn't eat it. My experience at this restaurant was honestly one of the worst dining experiences I've had, and it's taken me so long to write this review because I've shuddered at revisiting this dining experience. This is what happened: - Service was awful: It took so long for the server to come take our order (we were doing a la cartel at lunchtime instead of ayce). We also had to ask three different servers before getting our water glasses refilled. - The cleanliness was horrendous: I saw grime stuck to the insides of the water pitcher they used to pour our water, and our dishes were not cleaned properly and still filthy - dried avocado still stuck on our plates from the previous diners when they served to us - Food timing was horrible: It was only myself and one other person at our table and we ordered one dish each, yet our food came 15 minutes apart from each other - Food quality should not have passed any quality control checks: I ordered the maki roll combo (3 types of maki rolls). The california rolls were falling apart since they were so loosely wrapped. Half of the rolls didn't even have rice on the outside of it and the ingredients were not evenly distributed. avocados were not cut consistently (some slices were the size of a toothpick while others where the size of a green bean). The salmon in my spicy salmon rolls were not fresh at all - I ended up with a stomach ache after this meal. The iceberg lettuce in the salad was also turning brown!! Luckily they care more about making money instead of customer satisfication, so as soon as we put our chopsticks down, they rushed to us with the bill so that we could leave faster (which is honestly for the better - I don't know how much longer I could've tolerated this place). I am terribly disappointed. This was one of my fav local places which has steadily gone downhill and tonight's dinner will be my last there. The place used to have a hip groove to it with dark tables and white textured leatherette chairs. Now the tables are covered with atrocious white polyester table cloths and white butcher paper. The fabric bench I sat on had food stains. The AYCE food trough mentality has become the norm. I ordered my favourite rainbow roll ala carte. I was checking in with friends on social media while I waited and a baby screamed. The couple in the table across from me were puzzling over an iPad menu at their table, trying to identify the plate in front of them. "Oh, that's a rainbow roll," I told them. "I ordered one, too." "Then this must be yours," says the guy, grabbing the plate. "Let me bring it over." "No, no," I say. "It's yours now." The server comes by, points to the plate and asks a question, then picks up the plate from their table and brings it to me. I am aghast. I don't even know how to refuse it. But I'm not eating it. The server clues in, asks if anything is wrong. I tell her I'd rather have my own rainbow roll than somebody else's. Yes, they replaced it. But it was a pale imitation of my fav. No tuna. One measly strip of salmon, a measly strip of white 'tuna' (ick) and lots of avocado. I just took down the luscious picture of their rainbow roll I posted about 3 years ago. It's not the same restaurant and I wouldn't want anyone to be tricked into believing it was. read more

To start, the servers hate working there and probably hate you. Even before this abysmal experience, I've never seen any of the waiters smile or offer anything approaching customer service. They're dead behind the eyes, don't say thank you, and only mumble before running away to hide in the kitchens, probably to talk about customers. That was easy to overlook when the food was good, but even that's gotten bad. - I ordered a Hot and Sour soup that was clearly reheated, old, and gloopy. I decided to suck it up and eat it but it was disgusting. - TWICE we were served the wrong food and both times the waiters tried to argue that WE were wrong like the IPad doesn't have a record of what we ordered. - After I received another gloopy disgusting soup I decided to complain. I told the waitress that it had clearly been reheated and she said 'It's supposed to be like that,' to describe the disgusting texture. I've had this soup before and it's certainly not supposed to be like that. - After I complained about the lukewarm and clearly reheated food, my already bad waitress was replaced by someone who I assume is a manager. - Instead of trying to fix the blunders of her employees, she proceeded to ignore me until I asked for anything, which was laughable. I couldn't tell if I was dealing with a grown woman or a teenager. What kind of manager gives a customer the silent treatment? - The servers audibly talked about me in Chinese because they assumed because I'm black, I wouldn't understand. I'm actually half Asian and half black. I understand Chinese. Don't come here unless you want to eat disgusting premade food and learn some creative Chinese insults. read more

Terrible experience. Honestly everything was bad. You walk in and there's like 10 tables and it looks crowded and messy. The girl takes one look at us, points at a table and walks away. Ooook? So we sit down. The tables are sticky. That is so gross to me! Then she slaps down a menu and the list to choose from and walks away. Eventually she comes back and asks about drinks. We get our drinks and our food quickly. All the rolls taste exactly the same. They all look like a California roll. This was really disappointing coming from markham where they are really creative and skilled with their sushi. I ate at the Ajax location for the first time this weekend. First of all, the service is terrible. The waitress forgot my mother's order so my mother was forced to watch us eat our meals while she sat there starving until they finally came with her food. They also kept forgetting to bring us the water that we asked for and when they DID remember they came with a pitcher in hand and filled my dad's glass of beer with water. The food somewhat made up for the horrible service. I ordered a chicken bento box. It was a good sized portion and quite appetizing although I was not too fond of the shredded cucumber in my cucumber rolls. I prefer thicker slices of cucumber. Otherwise, the gyoza was crispy and tasty and the chicken and tempura was also delicious. I think next time we will just have to order take out because the food is good but the service is below expectations. read more

Really nice, cozy place with modern atmosphere, great food, and great prices. It didn't blow me away like some of the Asian cuisine I've had at other restaurants, but it was still very delicious. The staff was very friendly and some relaxing piano music played the entire time, not your typical radio tunes. My fiancée and I had the bento boxes. I'd definitely recommend this place if you want some affordable, delicious Japanese food in a comfortable venue. read more

I've been to Makimono once. The food was okay, but they didn't have a very large variety of food compared to some other Japanese buffets i've been to. It took about 15-20 minutes for someone to take our order after my friend and I sat down with the menu, and they continued to take a long time to come back to take our orders after we'd finished what was on our plates (the restaurant was virtually empty when we were there, so they weren't busy helping other customers). My boyfriend seems to really like it, but he doesn't eat sushi so he goes for the beef rice and things like that. He eats at Makimono from time to time, but I decide to eat at home on nights that he goes to Makimono with his friends. read more
