We were in the area and had a taste for AYCE Sushi... So we gave it a try. Honestly, we should have left. It's a small place and I thought it might be good when I saw several Asian customers. The waitress was rather unenthusiastic. The menu was okay, but missing a few items that other AYCE spots I frequent offer (no Dim Sum for example). The food was average at best (and that's stretching it)... The price was higher than most other places... $41 per person was overpriced in my opinion. Had the AYCE weekend lunch ($30). Amusingly, you have to accept terms of service. There's no description for many of the rolls. The cooking is generally decent, though the chicken skewer was dry & the udon soup tasteless. The sushi is above average in that the rice is noticeably warm & there's not too much of it, but it falls apart easily & there's not that much fish either. The meal came with a complimentary beef tataki. The sauce was heavier than usual - a bit fruity & quite acidic. It was pretty good. They have unusual dishes like yam fries, spicy miso soup & potato croquettes. They have one of smallest portions for sesame chicken for AYCE sushis, but definitely the largest sushi pizza portion. Dessert was a mixed bag. The sundae was good with crispy cookie crumbs & chocolate sauce. However the fried banana was below average (too soft, with too much artificial banana flavour) & the ice cream had more ice crystals than average. read more

I had ordered the red dragon roll which, to me, should be topped with salmon. I don't know what it was but it sure wasn't salmon. I tried a piece of fish by itself thinking that maybe I would be able to figure it out but it was so nondescript that I couldn't. I thought maybe it was tuna due to its texture but it didn't taste like it. It really didn't taste of anything. Others opted for the lunch special bento box and they seemed pleased with their choice. After spending a few hours at the beach in Georgina, we were craving for sushi. Googled for sushi places around Newmarket and found this place which also had a really good rating on Yelp. After looking at their menu on their website, I got the Sushi and Maki Party Tray C. It was a great deal for 40 pieces and 10% off paid in cash for only $41. The sushi was fresh and rolls were tasty! We liked that it included some cooked shrimp and imitation crabmeat as my husband is not crazy about raw fish. It's a little far for us to come here regularly but if you live in the area, I highly recommend this sushi place! read more

Leading things off I will say the food was great. We did the "all you can eat", however, this was misleading. The reason for deducting stars is because it is in my words "how much they're willing to let you eat" or "how long it will take us to get annoyed by you". By the time we were getting ready to leave it had been 1.5 hours MAX which is typical time to request the bill. As my girlfriend and I were getting ready to order desert and the bill we realized the ordering iPad was already taken away by the rude waitress. Been to golden maki quite a few times and after each visits it just doesn't seem to get better hence the two star rating. I'm always big on supporting local and giving them chances but after this visit I'm definitely not returning. I've had my shares of sushi. For one, the nigiri sushi is overpacked with rice (see the photo) it also falls apart when you pick it up. The fish on top doesn't even wrap the whole sushi. The whole presentation was just off and not appetizing. A bit disappointing as the restaurant is close and convenient. Lastly, time is very important. When I placed this order at 5:37 pm tonight and she said it'll be ready in 25 mins my husband went to pick it up almost 6:45 pm and it still wasn't ready. I feel that with all of the new AYCE Japanese restaurants popping up, this one lacks on all fronts. It's a bit cheaper but I'd pay the extra few bucks for quality food. I found that all of the food was either bad or average. Nothing wowed me or was even worth ordering again. The sushi (while beautifully present on a wooden boat!) had too much rice and the fish did not taste fresh. This was a real big turnoff for me because the sushi is the main reason for my visit! Most of the other items on the menu were ok. I found their deep fried items ok but you can get better quality anywhere else. The one good aspect was the service. I found them to be friendly and attentive. Played were cleared quickly, which is always appreciated. Overall, my visit was unmemorable other than the bad sushi. I would recommend looking for other options if you're looking for AYCE Japanese food since there are so many other places popping up. read more

This is one of my favourite sushi places in Newmarket! I was really sad when they closed for 6 months or so due to a fire, but super happy when they reopened again. I like that they have a variety of items to choose from during lunch ayce. These include assorted sushi and maki rolls, appetizers like beef green onion roll, beef ribs, calamari, grilled salmon belly, cheese wontons and more! They also have the fixings of tempura, Noodle and rice dishes, teriyaki dishes. I particularly like their snow roll and volcano rolls which are made of rice paper. Their rollls are a good size and aren't stuffed with excessive rice, so you can eat a good amount before you are too full. The food is always freaking and very yummy tasting. And the service is always great! When I went back on their second day of re-opening, the chef presented us with a salmon sashimi dish that was made with a special ponzu sauce from Japan. They don't have that dish on the menu so it was a special treat. I think lunch ayce is $16.99 and dinner is $26.99. Really good prices for the quality of food! BEST SUSHI IN NEWMARKET! They are now OPEN again for business and thank goodness as this is my favourite sushi place in Newmarket. Bedsides the great value, the food here is absolutely fresh and delicious. Some of my favourites are the Spicy White Tuna Roll (best I've had ever!), anything with avocado in it here is out of this world as it's so fresh and creamy and the vegetarian roll there that is awesome is he Yam roll. They deliver, have take out and eat in. I haven't done the eat in yet but will soon. They were closed for a renovation but they are now open again and strong as ever. read more

Got take out here a few days ago and the sushi was alright. I got spicy salmon and spicy crab roll along with some tempuras. The spicy crab was really good! However the spicy salmon tasted a bit off and no fresh. Maybe it's just me but it definitely tasted weird. This place used to be amazing AYCE. The sushi was great and then price was very reasonable. Not anymore! We came at lunch today and were very disappointed! The whole lunch experience took 2 hours! The restaurant wasn't even busy so I don't see an excuse for the slow service! The food took a very long time to come out, and it came out one item at a time. On top of everything the staff was rude! They waitresses would just look at you and fully ignore you or walk away. After such a poor experience I would defiantly not return if service stays this way. Went for AYCE lunch on Saturday and for about $14 per person, it's great! The waitress there was super thoughtful and brought over toys when my 1.5 year old was a bit grouchy. He was instantly distracted. The service is fast and friendly, the food tastes amazing! The sushi sizes were great for an all you can eat place. The sushi rice tasted perfect and I couldn't ask for a better price. Will definitely be coming back here again. My only thing was at the end we had three hand rolls left and were so full, we just couldn't finish it. We thought we had ordered the small sushi pieces lol They wanted to charge us $3 extra for the hand rolls to take it home but we weren't interested in paying more. The waitress told us they were going to throw the rolls away if we didn't take them. It was the end of the lunch period (we left around 4) so we figured they could've made the call to just let us take the rolls home. Oh well, I guess rules are rules! My husband and I had a long day at work, we decided to hit up Golden Maki for dinner. It was a Monday and the price for all you could eat was 26.99 which is pretty reasonable for AYCE sushi in Newmarket. Most of the other places were over 30 bucks. The inside was really nice, super spacious and clean, there was a nice vibe and service was great too. The only thing that I did not like was the paper menus that they had. Most of the stuff was crossed off and not available anymore. There was also a couple of times where we would get the other table's order. The few things that I enjoyed from their all you could eat was their Volcano Roll - salmon, crab meat, crispy rolled in rice paper, so delicious! I also enjoyed their spicy salmon sushi over their spicy sushi maki rolls. They also had a new item that they were introducing and it was bacon-wrapped shrimp. SO YUMMY. A few things that were a miss was the potato croquette. I would have eaten it if they didn't squirt ketchup on it. I guess it makes sense but I think it would be better on the side since I did not enjoy it at all. I didn't know that it was served with ketchup drizzle. The service was good here. Be aware of what you are ordering because it can be a lot of food. Food came in a timely order and was never delayed. Sushi dishes were fresh and flavorful. Hand rolls were well made and had good portions for the size of 8 people. Our water was always topped up every hour or so. Staff were friendly to an extent, somewhat stand off ish and were abit confused about the amount of food ordered. Favourite sushi spot in Newmarket, period. I love love love the sushi experience here. It's average price for lunch & dinner buffet and the service is usually good. Sometimes slow during peak hours but that's reasonable when there are only two chefs. What always brings me back is the veggie options. They incorporate different flavours and sauces and try to switch up their menu from the usual run-off-the-mill sushi restaurants. The salmon is so fresh and they are skimpy on rice (but this is what I prefer). I've been to other sushi places and have been told I cannot order any more because of my left over rice, regardless if I'm willing to pay for it. Not this place! They are reasonable and are willing to make exceptions. Sashimi is cut thin so order more if you are looking for large cuts. I would recommend the sweet potato roll, summer roll, jade roll and salmon flowers. Oh, and all of the specialty rolls. read more

Updated Update: Golden Maki has reopened, but now with an "all you can eat" sushi menu. This is usually the nail in the coffin of a good Japanese restaurant, since the portions usually shift to a sliver of fish on a lump of rice. I decided that for $12, I might as well try it once to be fair. I was surprised that the food quality was still excellent, the variety quite good, and the portion sizes had me satisfied but not bloated with an excess of rice. If you ever want to pound down a feast of sushi at a good price, the all-you-can-eat option is usually pretty bad, but Golden Maki makes it work. I'll be back! read more

Very impressed by G. Maki, man. I am used to Markham or Richmond hill's sushi places. The fish was fresh, I agree. The presentation was well thought out. I didn't feel like they cheated us up here, thinking that we don't know good sushi. They were very prompt in their services and no pressure or looming near us. The atmosphere was attractive enough, but the most important was the food which was far from disappointing. I've been coming to Golden Maki for about 4 years now and have to say it's probably my favorite ayce sushi joint in Newmarket. Compared to other sushi places in the area I find the quality most consistent here. The food is always fresh and delicious, and in all the years I've been coming here the shrimp has always been cleaned properly, something that cannot be said about other ayce restaurants (I'm looking at you Cynthia's). The price point is pretty standard I find but well worth it given all the options. A couple things to note however, the staff isn't the most friendly though I find that is common at ayce places so I don't mind much. Though it seems recently they have hired some newer more friendly people so that could change. Also it's a rather small place so do plan ahead if coming with a group. Overall I would highly recommend Golden Maki if you're looking for good sushi in Newmarket. read more

And if you ask for anything they treat your simple requests (ie. Having a glass of water) as the most difficult request you could make and that you're bothering them. Had to ask multiple times for items we ordered 20+ minutes before that we still hasn't received. They only gave us two order sheets for 2 people, and when we asked for extras they handed us just one. We order in small batches so we don't over order and waste. But they didn't want us ordering as little we did anyways. They can't seem to handle a full busy restaurant, and get overwhelmed quickly. They avoid eye contact with customers, seems to be a way to not talk to customers. The only time we got speedy service was when we were paying to leave. I won't be returning again. read more

This is my family's favourite sushi joint, and I don't mind it either. We go for AYCE as most options that you can get a la carte you can also get AYCE. I absolutely adore the "rock and roll" maki you can get here. It has cream cheese in it and there is just something about it! I could eat that and nothing else. The tempura is nothing to complain about, the green tea is delightful, and overall there isn't much to complain about! It's all you really want in an AYCE sushi experience. Nice place too. My sister loves that they have some mango roll options. On the other hand, I am not a fan of their sweet potato roll even though I usually love those, as they cover it in a sweet sauce on top. Rude staff just for walking in? We walk in for the first time and the girl server was rude from the start, we hadn't even spoken. I was visibly 9 months pregnant and she pointed at the far wall and said "sit at the table". No escort, no smile, just an irritated demand. The back wall was full of people who would be elbow to elbow and no way was I going to fit, so I sat at a table in the same section where I could move the chair out to fit my belly. I instantly felt hostility from the server. There was a male server, who was polite until the female server very obviously started yelling about us to the entire staff, then he refused to acknowledge us or talk. The sushi was good but the service was abhorrent: The female server acted put out to have to serve us. Was cold and hostile for no reason, had a huge attitude. Brought me a Coke can with a straw. No glass or ice. I had to ask for a glass and she says " You need a glass for your Coke?" I say yes...Does she think we're at a picnic? No ice of course or offer of any. I ask her about what is in a certain roll and she cuts me off before my sentence is done. I ask again and she goes "No, this is what is in the roll". Next time don't interrupt. Act like you aren't a completely miserable, jerk of a person. We did nothing impolite except walk in. Food was brought quickly, looked good, tasted good. The male server refused to acknowledge our polite thank you's with any response, which was rude, he just stood there silently. Plates were very quickly cleared. No offer of anything more or more drinks or water to keep us. Just " get out". The menu was horribly chaotic and has no sushi lunch specials. Prices were good though. I would give this place no star, but that option is not available. I'm celiac and told the server and explained how I could not have gluten as it would make me very sick. This place doesn't even carry gluten free soya sauce. I travel a fair bit for work and this is the first place that I encounter that doesn't have any accommodation (gluten free soya sauce). There was an error in my order and I was served some gluten with one of the rolls. I only noticed it on the third bite. The server said there was a mistake on the menu. I told her that I had explained to her my situation and she should have known. Consequently, I am currently very ill and will likely be for a couple of days. Being the closest AYCE sushi by me house (literally across the street) I always go eat there. I am always seated promptly when I enter and are giving the menu and asked for what I would like to drink. The food is good, nothing spectacular, but always fresh. Although the staffing is a bit..cold towards the customers and don't really smile, but prompt with bringing food and drinks. My favourite is their salmon nigiri, although some say the rice is a bit warm, that doesn't bother me, because it shows that it has just been cooked and is fresh. But to each their own! The fish always comes out cool and refreshing. For seating they have 5 booths, and a bunch of semi-booths, along with a couple tables. It always has seating for when I go, even around dinner time on a weekend, but if you are worried about seating, i suggest you book a reservation. I have ordered take out there multiple times and it has been ready in about 10 to 15 minutes. Once again, the quality is good and fresh. I usually get the spider crab roll along with spicy salmon hand roll. Yummy! I will continue to go back in the near future! read more
