I used to shop here when the store was over on ceres street because i used to work next door at wholly macro. this was long before there was a sephora within an hour radius. the owner is very nice and helpful and they carry beautiful makeup from quality brands like smashbox, cargo and philosophy. if your looking for personal service and nice makeup this is the place to go in southern nh. read more

PLEASE SKIP THIS PLACE!!!!!!!!!!!! Awful customer service!!! I live in Boston and shop in boutiques quite often and was incredibly shocked by the unprofessional and rude behavior of the staff. I was visiting my boyfriend in Portsmouth and needed a foundation/powder. I was not greeted by anyone when I walked in and needed to wait 15 minutes before I could receive any help. When I finally spoke to one of the employees and told her what I was looking for she did not seem to have any knowledge about the product and was giving attitude the entire time.... This review is long overdue. I've been going to Making Faces since Annie opened on Ceres Street over 10 years ago. The business has since moved to Bow Street. I've been getting regular "on the glow" facials for a couple of years. Personalized facials, like a supermodel. Annie is incredible. She and her staff have always been true professionals, knowledgable, and never on the hard sell (I use minimal makeup). I am grateful to have a resource like this store right downtown for soap, skin care, fragrances, and scented candles. It's an organized, lovely space with a lot to offer. read more

I originally went to MF because I wanted to give the "little guy" a chance to earn my business as opposed to going to Sephora. Here are a few takeaways from my last trip to MF: 1)Inventory is spotty. I have pale skin and MF did not have a concealer for me in stock. This wasn't a tall order. 2) The sales staff does not seem to know its own merchandise. I grabbed what I thought was a NARS cream blush; it ended up being a Multiple which can be used as a lipstick and blush. Of course, my salesgirl did not speak up. I ended up buying a separate lipstick; it would have been nice to have saved a few bucks by sticking with the Multiple The store is nice enough but it's really hit or miss...I have spent on a average a buck fiftty each year and I have never been invited to a party and have never been given any freebies:/ read more

Making Faces is a more personal Sephora, privately owned in quaint downtown Portsmouth, New Hampshire. This company has been around for years before Sephora even thought of a store in New Hampshire. I love this place. They carry many great lines of makeup and skincare that you can't find elsewhere. Some of the lines they carry are Smashbox, Anthony, Cargo, Philosophy, Urban Decay, and many more. I like the products that they sell but sadly the ladies are full of attitude and have poor customer service! This happened to me twice and I found out that friends have also experienced the same thing! I won't be shopping here! We hired making faces for my wedding. Danielle Mckenzie, my make up artist was amazing. I am not big on make up and she made me feel comfortable and made me laugh! Horrible service! I called here to make an appointment for wedding day make up. I had been in the store once, and thought it was ok overall. I was reading other bad postings on City Search as I was dialing 'making faces' to make the appointment. ( City search has many complaints listed about young help, not-so-nice owner) but I was still ready to give them the benefit of the doubt, and kind of looking forward to proving the nay-sayers wrong. Oh my! The girl who took my call could not have been more off-putting. I didn't think there was anything unclear about my request for more information and rates for wedding day make up, but she seemed quite confused and had a lovely I-cannot-be-bothered-with-this s%$t attititude. Young lady: "Um, so you want to *buy* makeup for your wedding? what exactly is it that you want?" Me: "Well, I'd like a professional to do my makeup for my wedding day. Isn't that a service you offer?" Young lady "Oh. Well, you'd need to speak to the owner for that. " So, then, instead of offering any kind of additional information or range of prices for services or an offer to take my number, there was awkward silence and I was kind of left hanging on the line to let that sink in. It was kind of like having a phone conversation with 4 year old child along the lines of.. "Um, I don't know... my Mommy isn't home." I then had to ask if I could leave a message and my number which was another painful process in spelling my name, trying to explain out of state area code, etc.. and then was left to sit for 2 WEEKS waiting for my call to be returned!! Guess what? The call came today..."Um, yeah, the owner is busy on your date.. so we can't help you, but here's the name of someone who can" Ok. so the recommendation was a nice touch.... but otherwise this service is horrible! There's no excuse for waiting 2 weeks to return a call, and not having an upbeat, helpful person on the phone. Yuck. I'm so glad they won't be a part of my day! read more
