Your child will be placed with 1 or 2 other children with the same teacher. The students are all doing separate lesson plans, but there is not undivided attention from the teacher - even though you are paying $45-$50 an hour. This is a one-size-fits all program and is not tailored to your child individually. Whether your child is an auditory learner, hands on learner or otherwise, your kiddo will be working on an i-pad program (I have found plenty of free apps that are more than comparable). THE BIGGEST ISSUE: If you pay in advance, they will put you on a rolling system without your knowledge. Which means, you will be obligated to attend every week on the same time and day (they will not tell you this by the way). If you miss because you were unaware of this policy - it is NOT written in the agreement - then you will lose/forfeit the cost of that class. Sylvan refunded me half of the hours that I paid in advance. I lost almost $400. Please find a more suitable learning experience for your kiddo. This place is over priced and throws your kid in front of a computer. FYI - my kiddo attended the facility in New Braunfels, but Schertz is the managing center. We found Joe's name the weekend before the last test so time was short but Joe went out of his way to rearrange his schedule to work with us. After his first session with Joe, my son told me that he learned more in that hour than in 12 weeks with his classroom teacher and that many of the pieces were falling into place. He made a big improvement on the test and did not have to retake it as he had on several previous ones. He continued with the sessions and made an 82 on the semester midterm. We have tried to work with the owner, the office manager, the college student "tutors" that staff the place and are supposed to assist the students needing help. There are serious issues that are ongoing with this facility and don't seem to be a concern of the owner or staff. We have personally observed some of these issues several times and have voiced our concerns with ownership and all staff. 1. Unprofessional demeanor (college student "tutors" and office manager not focused, do not provide one on one assistance, encourage distractive group discussions on various political subjects, their personal interests, off color and off topic rants with the students there for MATH assistance.) 2. Parents of students walking in to pick up or drop off and interrupting the study enviornment with their own topics of discussion and proceed to linger and have "social hour" with other parents, staff and other students. 3. "Tutors" allowing unruly, distractive behavior from students that have been dropped off to get assistance, but just want to complain about why they are made to attend and raise the noise level of the center to lunchroom din levels. 4. Selective assistance by the "tutors". When the college level tutor or office manager cannot follow the student's text book or their school's math curriculum, they tell the student.. "We don't know what your school wants"...., "We don't know how the book got that answer", "We have never done it that way"... and my fave.... "Just keep working at it, you might figure it out". 5. Overheard in a conversation to a student... "Maybe you should try Khan Academy, that free online educational tutor...maybe they can help with your math needs". That's just some of the crap that goes on in this facility. If you are considering sending your student to Mathnasium for "math help" to improve their grades and understanding of math, you may want to consider a private tutor. There are college students in the New Braunfels area looking to make some extra cash, are genuinely interested in your child's success and charge the same rates with real "one on one" math help.
