I rarely think of Makray as a place for dinner. But what a treat to go to their fish fry Friday. Being celiac I was pretty sure I wouldn't be eating fish. Wedding Review! We celebrated our marriage with friends and family at Makray Memorial Golf Club on October 1, 2022 and it was an absolute dream! Our theme was "Autumn in the Mountains;" commemorating where my husband and I met, lived, adventured, and fell in love out West in Colorado. I have included a detailed venue review below, but if you are looking for the condensed version...I highly recommend this amazing venue with its impeccable service, exquisite food, gorgeous surroundings, and the creation of memories that will last a lifetime. Venue Team The dynamic duo of Leeza and Laurie (L&L) were the best to work with - they were exceptionally professional yet easygoing and went so above and beyond their titles of Catering Sales Manager and Manager of Banquet Sales, respectively. From the initial tour in early 2021 all the way through our last dance on 10.1.22, L&L treated my family and I with respect, sincerity, humor (lots of perfectly timed "dad" jokes), and transparency. I worked directly with the duo on each aspect and detail in the planning process from inception to execution. I live out of state, so communication was very important to me when selecting a venue, and L&L were always available with timely emails and phone calls. They were our contacts throughout the entire experience, including our "I Do" day. We did not hire an external wedding coordinator or day-of coordinator as L&L superbly provide that service as well (included in the "package"). I cannot write enough accolades to express how seamless and stress-free L&L made our entire experience...seriously the BEST duo to work with and I am so grateful they were the two on this wedding planning journey with me! Onto the banquet staff. Two words...absolute pros! The entire team was efficient, skilled, and kind. This well-functioning and professional team had zero issues with service and many of my guests commented on how they felt so well taken care of by the team, especially my guests with special dietary needs. The bartenders were swift and friendly, and my guests experienced little to no wait times for drinks. We even had a guest unknowingly leave her phone on the balcony at the end of the night, and a banquet staff member found it and ran it outside to her before she left. The entire team went above and beyond to ensure we had a wonderful experience. Venue I would describe Makray as the perfect blend of mini castle and elegant ski chalet. From the stunning stone vine-covered exterior, to the classic and cozy interior with modern upgrades, this venue is an absolute dream for many different aesthetics. The comprehensive venue package included the gorgeous ballroom with newly renovated balcony, refinished dance floor (which is huge and a beautiful dark stained wood), two built in bar stations with access via ballroom and pre-function space, round and rectangular tables, banquet chairs (can upgrade for Chivari however the "in-house" chairs were much nicer than other venues I toured, did not look like office chairs, were comfortable, and the dark green padding even blended nicely with my color palette), conveniently located bridal suite, elegant grand stairway, intimate pre-function space with beautiful wood floors at the top of the stairway featuring a fireplace and piano nook, elevator, plenty of parking, and so much more! My husband and I are total foodies, so this was an important consideration for our venue selection. Makray has amazing food and drink options. Chef John Hennessey elevates the typical wedding food offerings and provides innovative elements to each dish. This humble and talented Chef has many career accolades and experiences, my favorite being his time spent as team chef for the Chicago Cubs! We also elected to upgrade our package to include passed hors d'oeuvres during cocktail hour, a few reception surprise snacks, and a late-night bites. Beautiful patio good food! What happened to the landscaping? Weeds everywhere...even in the parking lot. I used to love coming here for lunch on the patio with beautiful flowers and pristine landscaping. At least get rid of the weeds and put some mulch down. Planters don't even have flowers. 5 Stars and then some! Fairy tale setting with all the beautiful architecture of the building inside and out. Prince and Princess married were married here, in this castle-like setting. This would have been enough, but add outstanding staff and excellent food, for this mother of the bride, I was more than impressed. We are going back again, just for dinner and the view! Just an overall bad golfcourse and experience. This golf course has uneven greens and terrible service. The tee boxes were messy and the fairways are too! I decided to golf here a couple days ago after I was in town and remembered this course from a wedding I went to a year back. The wedding was nice but looking back, and talking with the groom, the service wasn't the best and apparently it was really expensive! Which makes sense since it was around 90 dollars to golf here, way overpriced for a bad golf course. I ate after and the food made me sick... wouldn't recommend wasting time here for golf or a wedding service (according that that groom and bride) unless you really have money to waste. read more

I was a recent guest here for a wedding reception, so this review is for that and not the golf course. The facility is beautiful and elegant. The views of the course were very picturesque. The staff did a great job and were attentive. The appetizers were delicious and the food was fantastic. The soup and salad were great. For the main course we had beef filets and also chicken, paired with roasted potatoes and vegetable medley. The bartenders did a great job and poured a good stiff drink. read more

We had our wedding here on Sunday 10/10/10. We loved this venue especially just upon arrival, the setting is quiet and beautiful. Walking in it's got a very warm, woodsy feel and we loved that we would be the only couple getting married here on 10/10/10. Laurie was our Wedding Planner and she did a great job at helping us prepare for the big day. Everything was set up perfectly and the only thing that went wrong was our cake, we didn't realize until we got home but our cake wasn't fondant it was a butter cream, we were refunded our money without any hesitation. We go back every year on our anniversary to celebrate at the Restaurant on property. The food is always delicious and the service is always great. The venue is just gorgeous for wedding and other special events. For us getting married on 10/10 at 1010 Northwest highway was perfect. read more

I visited recently for a charity golf outing and I was really happy with the quality and service at this course. The course itself is quite nice (thankfully not a ton of sand traps...but I'm probably just happy with this due to my knack for hitting into them). The clubhouse is very beautiful and the dining areas have a great view of the course. The staff was nothing but friendly and were really welcoming to the charity outing. Some of the holes were quite difficult, but there was a very good combination of difficult holes along with 'regular' ones for those of us who might not be that amazing at golf. Definitely a good spot for an outing or a nice, relaxing round on a pretty course. read more

To me, this is the epitome of what a great public course in the suburbs of Chicago can be. Course was in great shape. Fantastic layout. Optically is very appealing and definitely has lots of challenges for the everyday golfer. Greens were pretty fast and not the easiest to stick balls on the green. Bring lots of balls. Cost was about what I would expect for a public course of this caliber. Paid $49 for walking on the course (which isn't an easy walk and green to tee is not very short on many holes). And that was after 2PM. I think earlier in the day it might be another $20-$30 more, and to ride is also extra. So it isn't a cheap course but for avid golfers that love to find good public courses this is a must play. read more

Makray Memorial Golf Club - Golf Near Me - Barrington, Illinois

MaKray is a well-known public course in Barrington - it was totally rebuilt (fairways, greens, clubhouse) essentially from scratch several years ago, replacing Thunderbird Gold Course. Since then, I have always heard good things about it, but have never been myself. This review focuses solely on the restaurant itself and I should note, this was during a heavily attended Easter Brunch, so I don't know if this is typical of how it normally is. We made reservations 6 weeks prior to Easter and the earliest we could get in was 1:30 PM, so I think that speaks to how popular this place is. The clubhouse itself is nice and is spread over two levels. There is a main dining room on the top floor which is very large and leads to a very large stone balcony. The ground level contains a more traditional style restaurant and bar, all of which lead out to a large stone patio. The clubhouse is nice - well maintained, clean and tastefully done. I would describe it as fairly contemporary as far as clubhouses go and perhaps a tad generic, but it is a nice atmosphere overall. The service for the Easter brunch was good. I never felt as though we were ignored and our waiter ensured we weren't waiting for a drink and that our empty plates were cleared. The clubhouse was again, tastefully decorated for Easter - festive, but not over the top. The staff seemed well organized and had worked hard to pull off the event - that was clear. The people in attendance were mixed - a lot of people in sports coats and dresses, young, old, middle age...some were wearing jeans and short sleeve shirts...so clearly the dress code for an event like Easter was somewhat flexible. There were a lot of guests milling around and navigating through them took some concentration, but once at the table it was fine. There was a very large buffet which included salad station, hot breakfast station, omelet station, a single meat carving station, a seafood station and a table with assorted hot, non-breakfast food. I tried three types of salad. A chopped salad which was quite fresh - there was an out of place sweet taste to whatever the dressing was. There was a tortellini salad which had what I believe was a pureed sun-dried tomato dressing. The Moroccan Tabhoolli ...I was excited to see it being offered - it was terrible. It had a texture like oatmeal and I am pretty sure they used bottled lemon juice instead of fresh squeezed lemon. I grabbed half bagel which I immediately noticed was hard as a rock - as I had already touched it, I decided to make the best of it. I put on some cream cheese but was shocked when I later bit into it that the cream cheese seemed to be a blend - I think they had blended cream cheese with whipped butter which resulted in some sort of oily alloy which instantly developed a greasy film on the roof of my mouth. One of our guests tried the stone crab claws and said they weren't too bad...I was put off the seafood though after I noticed the raw oyster I had taken looked dry and stagnant - more closely resembling part of an old tire. I decided I didn't want to test my health insurance...ditched my entire plate of food and decided to start over. Back to the buffet I went...I tried the biscuits and gravy - this wasn't too bad, but it was very salty. I tried the Belgian waffles - these were pretty good. The mashed potato had sort of an odd texture to them...I am not sure what they put in there, but it had a subtle taste I couldn't identify. The spinach lasagna tasted strongly of earthy spinach but was edible. The French toast was as hard as a rock. I tried a croissant and it too was hard as a rock. There were several other dishes I didn't try...in retrospect, I should have gone to the omelet station, but it was mid afternoon and I wasn't really in the mood for breakfast food. I probably should have tried the carving station as well - the meat looked like it was ham, but the outside of it was very dark, so maybe it was roast beef? I didn't look too closely. Overall, I was pretty disappointed - they had put in so much work and it was such an extensive buffet, I had been pretty excited...but I think the food itself was focused more on quantity than quality. It felt mass produced in huge batches and much of it seemed as though it had been sitting for quite a little while. I would try MacKray for regular lunch or dinner service to see how they are, but I would never attend an event there like this again. They got most everything right, except for the food...which was really the whole point. read more

I don't even know where to begin. This is a long drawn out review, but it is something that needs to be shared. I have never been more disgusted with the service/behavior by wait staff in my life. I have been to Makray several times in the past- mostly for lunch. Never had an earth shattering experience (with service/staff) but food is decent so kept coming back. A couple weeks ago, my husband and I and a couple friends decided to go to the range. After hitting some golf balls we decided to stay for a late lunch. We were seated immediately given that there was 3 tables full inside and about 5 outdoors (ours included). The bus boy came immediately and handed us waters. But then we waited for 30 min and no one ever came to greet us or take an order. Like I said- they were not busy at all whatsoever and meanwhile all the tables around us were being checked on several times during these 30 minutes. I decided to go inside to see if I could find a waitstaff- there was no problem there. There was about 5-7 wait staff mingling amongst each other in the back and a few others in the front with the host. I went up to the host and let her know of the situation. The 2 wait staff that were with her immediately left and I walked outside. We gave it another 5-10 minutes only to have nobody come check on us. We decided to leave at this point but I decided to notify the manager of what had happened. The host went to the back first (i assume to tell her friends) before going to find the manager. My husband graciously explained to the manager (as I was too angry) what had happened. The manager was very apologetic and gave us a voucher for cocktails and app. Problem fixed? No. While my husband is talking, the host stood in front of us glaring at each of us and rolling her eyes. At this point- I decide to share my frustration with her and ask what her problem was. She continued to rolls her eyes and speak in a condescending tone. The level of disrespect we received that day by staff here is unacceptable. I did let the manager know that the general vibe I got as to why we were never helped had a lot to do with the fact that I am a person of color (in case you were wondering- the hostess rolled her eyes when I made this comment as well). Needless to say, I hope that this was a learning experience for their staff and they change their ways. It's disgusting to see that this sort of behavior is still happening and being tolerated. read more

Beautiful course with varied holes. Greens have severe slopes where they put the hole in nearly impossible pin locations. They failed to water and mowed the greens so short we had people 5 putting. It's just outright silly to putt a 4 footer and have the ball trickle 20 feet past the hole. Unfortunately, they need to tear up 75% of the greens to make this an enjoyable course. What an expensive course design flaw. It's $90+ with cart on weekends to be unfairly punished on the greens. What a shame. read more

I played one round at Makray this past summer and had a very nice experience. Tough golf, good food and drinks afterwards made for a great afternoon. But the reason for the 5 stars is because I left a jacket at the club and Don Habjan, the head golf pro set it aside for me. After the end of the season, when i was unable to make it to the course to claim my jacket, Don was nice enough to mail it to my home. So nice and friendly, I will definitely be back! read more

just don't go here if you want to save your money. I live off the golf course and ate there often... I've avoided reviewing them (and yes I made a Yelp account cause this is so frustrating) because despite the bad food that always upsets my stomach, they have never done something so offensive worth review. I went for my walk today and saw an abundance of Blue Lives Matter flags all over. I will not state my political side because it's irrelevant to the fact that a golf course should not be taking a political stance at all unless it's neutral (such as encouraging one to vote). They have made no other stances other than this and I don't know what changed! Overall, despite this, I wouldn't recommend golfing here. The fairways (especially hole 3) are bumpy and uneven, not in a good way. The cart paths are poorly patched and the greens are fast some places and slow in others, making it too inconsistent for even a good golfer to predict. It's a messy course and way overpriced for how much of an ok golf course it is. Now that they have participated in controversial politics as well, there seems to be no professionalism in maintenance and presentation. read more

Decent layout with a completely indifferent staff and uninterested rangers. Their excuse for 3 groups waiting on 8th was "well yeah, we have a lot of golfers out here". Lots of other places who value your $$ more. Bunkers have about 1/2 inch of sand so beware, with a few others mostly dirt. Better off going to Stonewall Orchard for the money, or even pine meadow. read more

When you first look at it this course is amazing and beautiful! But then you realize when playing it that it is actually the worst course you have ever played. The greens are so terrible!!! You could have a straight up hill putt on many of the holes and then u putt the ball within 2 inches of the cup and it rolls back down further than the original putt. Last time i went there about a week ago the course pro told me that multiple holes there are "just like that". So if you love torturing yourself, and being miserable for $70 go right ahead this is your course!! read more

Rating is for the course. Top notch venue that is extremely challenging. Well kept and the greens are lightning quick. I had at least 3 chances for birdie and simply could not get the speed of the greens. I did however par out the last hole a pretty long par 5. The clubhouse is beautiful and the beer cart had tall cans of my favorite beer, Stella Artois. Make sure to stay below the hole or your sure to 3 putt. This course is kind of expensive so I advise you to try and book on GolfNow for a break on the standard rate. I believe this is the toughest public golf course in Chicagoland. read more

I hosted a birthday dinner for my husband and used the Clubhouse Lounge private dining room. The staff was so accommodating and flexible. The food was very good, the room was the perfect size and it had a large TV that was perfect for a slide show that I had prepared. I would definitely recommend Makray for other events too. read more

I came here on a Sunday afternoon for a baby shower. The grounds are of course beautiful and the inside of the building was pretty as well. The room we were in was bright and sunny with tons of windows. And we weren't all squished in there. It was very comfortable. Also all of the wait staff were very helpful and friendly. The food was great and there sure was a lot of it! Overall this was an excellent place for a shower or to host any special event, really! read more

Makray was wonderful! We got married here just over two weeks ago. I don't know how I would have gotten through everything without Leeza! The whole team was so supportive. Chef did a fantastic job and everyone loved the food! The vegetarian tart was by far my favorite ever! I would got back just to have it again! Makray is a beautiful property for dinner, banquets and golf. I just booked two large dinners there for my kids' homecoming dinner and Mark at Makray was incredible. He helped show me places they could take pictures before dinner, the tables were set with napkins matching their school colors, and a perfect one price menu was given so the kids just needed to make sure they had that money with them. Super simple and thoughtful. We have been here for all kinds of banquets and golf. I plan to go back as soon as possible. Thank you! read more
