I've visited ML a few times and I'm hooked on mala tang! I've been wanting to try their stir fry, but every time I plan to get it, I stick with the soup. Once you enter the two set of doors, there will be a cart full of huge bowls and tongs. Once you one of each, you'll take a few steps to the toppings of your choice. You can get as much as you'd like... just remember it can add up quick especially if you get more than a lbs. I love spice and heat, but stick to spice level one. After you get your bowl weighed, they'll give you a number once you pay. You also get the option of adding in: ramen, udon, or rice on the side. They offer water with small cups that's on the other side of the cashier and canned pop/ Asian drinks (for additional cost). Even though it can get busy, I've never had a problem getting a seat. This place is always clean- table and restrooms. Service is friendly and pretty quick. Once you're done, you bus your bowl to the back- where the trash can is located. So we've just come back from our South East Asia trip and one thing I was craving was a nice bowl of noodles and soup. After looking around the search apps. We found this spot. Welcome to Mala Land. Don't be intimidated. You just walk up to the spread, add your choice of noodles, veggies, meats and so on. Then take it to the counter. They put it on the scale. You tell them which broth you would prefer. We went with the Mala Tang spice level 2. The broth is fabulous, the noodles, the meats and the bean curds tasted divine. It definitely does the trick. There wasn't much selection of meat, vegetables and other. I got the broth and my brother ordered a dry pot. They weigh your food so you pay by the pound. My bowl ended up being $22 and my brother's $25. It seems pricy for what it is. We both had proper malatang in China. Mala land just didn't impress. read more

Also added some variety into the menu with things like mala ban, which is non soupy and a sesame base. Also tried a mala tang (no pic) and the soup was so tasty. Would totally return. So I don't dislike this place, but I want to see more. The hot pot soup was not bad at all, I did like it. However, they charge you by the pound for your food. 15$ per pound. It's not too bad, but if you're not paying bc attention it can add up. The chicken wings were mid in my opinion. The wings were cooked well, but my sauce tasted grainy. Like it wasn't mixed well or it was the flour from the chicken. I got the sweet and spicy sauce. The flavor was good, but the grainy texture threw me off. The Chinese donuts were probably my favorite thing they had to offer. I'd come back just to order these. I wish they had more variety to choice from. Not a big variety of meat or veggies. This is a must try restaurant in Novi. You can choose the ingredients for your bowl from the food bar. There are lots of traditional Chinese vegetables, tofu, and noodles to choose from along with beef, sausage, and spam. The food is deliciously spicy! Spicy level 2 is tongue numbing. A nice quiet and clean place to eat. I love that you can customize your own mala bowl. You pay by the weight of the bowl you build. There are plenty for good options. The cashiers are nice and will help inform you of what the different options for cooking your food. It's kind of like hotpot, but no cooking it yourself and you do everything all at once before you sit down. They usually just call your number and you go back up to pick up your bowl of food. If you go during the weekday before 2:30 pm, you can select a side of udon, ramen, or rice to go into your bowl for free! read more

The quality of all the ingredients were great, they cook your food really well, so no complaints on the food whatsoever. I can't wait to go back to try more food options. A great addition to the Novi food scene! TLDR; Great food. Ambiance was fine. Waited longer than we wanted to for our food. Service is meh. This was our first experience with Malatang cuisine. You're provided a large bowl and a buffet of ingredients you'd like for your food. There are some selections that were good enough to make yourself a filling bowl of food, though the layout of the buffet makes it a bit awkward, and no more than two people can realistically pick out food at a time. First-Timer Tip: You'll be given the option to add rice on the side or udon noodles to your bowl for an additional $1.99. I made the mistake of preemptively adding rice noodles to my bowl and then adding udon. Given the chance to redo it, I'd have cut out the rice noodles and just gone with the udon. After placing your order, they give you a number and you're free to seat yourself. The space is pretty minimal, and you're expected to bus your own table. This feels like something they could redo in coming year with some financial success under their belt. But from the time we paid for our order to the time it was ready, the wait took 35 minutes. It's something to be aware of that this is not a quick place to grab a bite. My husband ordered the Level 2 spice Mala Tang Soup... he made a mistake. He likes things with a decent amount of heat, but he deeply regretted not starting off at 1. I ordered a Level 0/No Spice for my Mala Tang Soup but stole a ladle full of his broth and added it to my own. That brought my soup to the exact threshold of my wimpy spice tolerance. But it was oh so very tasty. I teetered on 3 stars simply because the service was slow, the layout of the buffet was a bit awkward, and there were plenty of people waiting for clean tongs that the kitchen couldn't get out fast enough. My current food obsession. If you know me, you know I love hot pot...Mala Land's soup option is similar but the broth is much more drinkable. You pull a plastic bowl and tongs, add how ever many of each item you want from the small (but sufficient) selection then pay by the pound. It can get expensive quickly if your preferred items are heavy (such as Spam and shrimp)...but leftovers reheat well. Also, this set up is a great way to try an item you've not had before such as the Spam, which I highly recommend. I always get the soup, spice level 2. Ken can't handle level 2. It has a nice kick, I will admit. We split the rice stick appetizer (also highly recommended, but also spicy), and recently tried the fried chicken and rice cake appetizer (which is not as good as just rice cakes, to us). Service is good. They're friendly, saying hi and bye, and they keep the food items well stocked (fresh). They give you a number when you order that they call when it's ready so you go up and get your own order. You get your own water, napkins. Buss your own table. The place is clean and bright. 2- and 4-tops you can pull together if you have a larger group. We tend to go weekend lunch, and they will fill up. read more

Finally got to try this place! I was so excited when I found out there was a mala restaurant nearby that does dry pot, but the reviews for the soup version were so glowing I had to try it first. The self-serve ingredients were all fresh, and they had a decent selection. Our wait time for a to go order was around 10 minutes. The soup is so flavorful, and the spice level of 2 was perfect for me (kind of a strong mild or light medium). Service was quick and friendly, and the place looked very clean! I came here for the first time intentionally on a cold, 18 degree snowy day at an off time.I had looked at some previous reviews and wanted to try the Mala Tang broth - it did not disappoint and is addictive! Walking in, the restaurant is minimalist and unassuming, but don't be fooled - the friendly service, Christmas music (for this time of year), and food made this place cozy and relaxing. They have a buffet of fresh ingredients to select for your meal in three different styles, soup, stir fry, etc. The ingredients range from shrimp, beef, krab, fish balls, quail eggs, and many other fresh veggies, noodles and other selections. These ingredients really come to life once cooked. You can also put in some specialty noodles at the buffet and/or have them add udon or ramen when cooking. They then weigh your bowl for price and prepare your meal. Once my food arrived I was stunned by the aroma and beauty of the mini cauldron. You can choose four spice levels, 0-3, and I chose 2 as I like spice. I found this to be a perfect spice level to balance with flavor. If you're not accustomed to spice, try 0-1. This place just opened less than 3 weeks ago so we wanted to give it a try. You basically choose every ingredient for your bowl, 3 kinds of noodles, vegetables and other ingredients, then you choose either deep fried or stew. Everything tastes fresh, limited space for sitting, food ok and only 3 kinds of drinks. You get charge by weight so price is proportional. Most say I will wait a few months before coming so they can settle down and maybe offer more options. read more
