We had dinner at the hotel both nights of our stay and to say the food was abundant would be an understatement. The meal, served family style, was so good you kept eating even though you knew you were full. The first night of our stay we had BBQ ribs and chile relleno casserole along with an assortment of cooked vegetables and homemade bread and if that wasn't enough, dessert was a homemade bread pudding. The second night we had meatballs, mashed potatoes with cabbage, cooked vegetables and homemade bread. Having learned my lesson the night before, and not being a fan of ground meat of any kind, I took a pass on the meatballs and just had potatoes and vegetables for my dinner. It was more than sufficient, but then came dessert again. This time buttermilk pie. I had never heard of buttermilk pie before...kind of like a custard pie...and I have to say it was quite good. I manage to eat about three bites of it before I had to declare myself full and leave it to our friend to finish. This is truly the kind of place that I envision when I read western stories and was a wonderful setting for our visit to the Steens.

When we booked our…read moreadventure over the phone, Susan asked about our riding experience, any food sensitivities and how much we wanted to dive in with the ranch experience. When we arrived, Susan came out of the house to welcome us and showed us our cabin (which they just finished last year). I wanted every experience the ranch had to offer and Tim and Susan did not disappoint. From waking up at sunrise to feed the horses, to witnessing the birth of a calf (they didn't have control over that but a total bonus), fixing fences, riding all day, cattle pushing, taking care of the horses, riding in the back of a truck after a long day, taking care of calves, glorious sunrises and sets, magnificent landscape to wonderful home cooked meals. We would swap stories at the table as I stuffed my mouth with biscuits, steak and homemade jam. I would watch the day break from the loft in our cabin. There was something so comforting and so right to put on the same pair of dusty jeans and boots as I got ready to tackle the day. I never once felt stupid for still not grasping how to cinch my horse by the third day or accidentally splitting up a herd during a push down the mountain. Susan made sure she snapped a photo or got a video during our glory moments. We were all treated like family and it was hard to say goodbye when the time came. Your adventure will be worth every penny, every sore butt and dusty face. In my 43 years next to my daughter's birth, this was the greatest moment of my life. My soul was alive the whole week and have found my calling after my daughter flys the coop. There is no better place to heal the soul than on the back of a horse.

The original destination seemed a bit daunting, so we spent some time in the Arena letting me get used to the feel of the horse and learning how to "drive" her, so to speak. I was a little embarrassed, but neither of these horse pro's made me feel anything less than fine. They kept telling me how good i was getting and that they saw me go from tense to comfortable in the short time we were on horseback. I'd love to see them again and I think I would like go on horseback again.... I'm so thankful for their patience and hospitality.

Beds and linens were the best of our trip. Loved the way they maintained the historic feel but modernized in the right ways (bathroom particularly). I'd stay here again if I were anywhere near Burns. Huge fan.

Chair/ottoman was stained so we didn't use it. If you have upholstered furniture keep it clean or get rid of it. Breakfast was included in the room charge, $99.99 w/o tax, which was enjoyed. The woman in charge of the breakfast room was nice to adults but a little impatient with the kids that were unsupervised. No one wore masks and the breakfast attendant gave us her opinion of the pandemic which was sadly uninformed. The hotel had a hot tub and small indoor pool. Looked lovely. Wish I would have seen it before checking out. Overall, the employees at R&R were very pleasant but not one employee work a mask nor did they enforce the mask policy posted on the front door and in the hallways.

The only thing that even makes it worth the 1 star minimum is that the hamburger patty was still the same as before. The server was barely competent and, although not overtly rude, her sour demeanor made it clear that she was only doing this job grudgingly. From the time we walked in the door til the food hit the table it was about an hour and it took until the halfway mark before we finally got our water. Not only had the prices gone up by about 30% since our visit less than a year ago, but the food quality (except for the previously mentioned burger patty) had plummeted by at least that much. The onions on the patty melt were literally unchewable, sort of like gnawing on an old clothes line. Then there was the french dip; as if the dried out hoagie roll wasn't bad enough, the obviously overcooked roast beef pretty much crumbled when bitten. I only hope karma has something extra special planned for the person who had the gall to charge $17 for this giant desiccated turd. I don't know what happened to turn this once great establishment into the absolute sh!thole it has become, but do yourself a favor and leave this place in your rearview mirror, we certainly will be from now on.

I like the big yard. It's quiet. The rooms are clean, and smell good. The towels are cotton. The art in the rooms appears to be original and local. Horseshoe Inn is my place to say when I'm traveling through Burns.

Bend RV Resort to Cathi's Place, a tale of two parks!…read more Bend RV had every imaginable amenity you could want; it had the feel of a five star hotel. But it lacked one thing you could tell that the personnel running the park didn't really seem to be involved with the guests. Think Biltmore servants with there own stairs and passage ways so the guests weren't disturbed. Then we went to Cath's Place in Hines/Burns. It was a Saturday and she came out a greeted us like we were old friends. Cathi will try and greet all her guests, but she has a postal job that requires her to be gone 4 hours a day. She also works on all her equipment herself, while making her little slice of earth come alive with flowers and amenities. She has plans to expand but that will have to wait until she has the time and money to do it right. What I witnessed on Saturday night around nine, we were taking our dogs out for the last time before bed. People were coming to her park broke down (broken water hose) and they came to the park in their tow car, she stayed with them until the wrecker came and set their coach in place and hooked up. When I remarked that she went above and beyond the call of duty. She said, "That's what people do for each other."
