Wait! Do you hear that? That is the sound of me.....stepping into the largest bathtub imaginable. Crane Hot Springs in Burns, Oregon is off the beaten path, so rural that as you drive to it you think that you must have missed a turn somewhere. But it is there, a little pool of heavenly warm, mineral water with endless skies and rolling hills. We needed to get out of town, we needed some relaxation, we needed a good deal, and we got all three at Crane Hot Springs. We traveled the 363 miles, 6.5 hours, to check out if this was truly a "unique soaking resort." Having visited many hot springs along raging rivers and at the end of hikes I was curious how a seemingly commercialized "resort" would compare. The thing about hot springs is that they are wild and free....this did not seem wild, or free, it does come with a price tag. However, when I was searching for an adventure out of town and advertisement popped up offering off-season discounts and I was intrigued. We went the weekend after Valentine's Day and were able to reserve a small cabin right next to the pool for less than a hotel room would have cost. Keep an eye for good deals. I joined a mailing list to be informed off upcoming events and sales since I know we WILL be going back. Let's talk about the accommodations first. Everything is very closely situated. The office is directly across from the pool, soaking tubs, bathrooms/showers, and cabins which are directly across from hotel rooms. The only lodging that is somewhat private with a lot of space is the RV spaces that are little bit of a walk. We opted for a small cabin. By small I mean that there were two beds and a bedside table and that was all the room available. Not spacious, but really, who wants to stay in when there is a hot spring to soak in? We didn't mind. Also, it was dog friendly. There is a kitchen on site that is offered for guest that has a small stove, fridge, microwave, and a few dishes/pots pans, and a small table. We used it to heat some soup, bake some biscuits, and keep our salad fixings cold. The office has a few frozen meals, ice cream, and a few odds and ends for purchase if you want to keep it simple. The office also has pool noodles, sunscreen, and the usual branded apparels. One thing to note, there is a wildlife reserve as part of the land. When we went it was very windy and chilly but it was a nice walk for the dog filled with different types of birds and several scenic spots to sit and rest. The walking trail is flat, well maintained, and not very long. Perfect way to start your morning or end your day. We did not book an appointment for a private soaking tub, but did glance in to check out the private, tiny rooms with a galvanized tub to fill. The bathroom/shower facility was very nice and functional. It has a big common room with tables to put bags and comfortably sit while waiting. The showers were spacious, the bathrooms clean. Now, to discuss the hot springs itself. First off, it's huge...it's the size of a pool...and hot from one end to the other. It is not deep, but deep enough to swim and float around. The rushing water cascading down creates a myriad of different heat levels. If you are ready to boil, they have a hot tub they call "The Lobster Pot" that is even hotter! We spent two hours floating around, chatting, floating, and didn't realize it. Time flies when you are cozy. We were concerned about the noise level in the pool when we went to bed around 10:00 because the proximity was so close. We didn't notice, although, it wasn't that busy and there were not a lot of people still hanging out when we went in. The pool is open 24 hours! We got up early for another float before check-out. Check out was easy and we left Crane Hot Springs very relaxed and already planning another trip. Perhaps we will stay in one of their novelty lodgings next time, there are covered wagons, tee-pees, houses, 5th wheels, and hotel rooms and suites. If you are a lover of hot springs and are looking for something that doesn't include a hike, dozens of people crowded into tiny pools, and want to ensure that clothing is not optional (suits must be worn at Crane Hot Springs), then this place is worth the drive. Had a great time with the family at Crystal Crane Hot Springs. We stayed in the Eagles Nest which had 2 big beds and a tub that could easily fit 4 adults. The bathroom and showers were 20 feet away and our stay was still very quiet. There is a picnic table and first pit with a burning grill so we had everything we needed. The nights got a little cold cause the tipi has a canvas door and there is a couple holes where the wind blows in, by the second night we got wise and shoved extra clothes in the holes on the tipi got super warm due to blocking the wind and turning on the space heater thats inside. It was relaxing and not as rowdy as I thought it would get for a place that has a lot of people but they are spread out enough to not worry about and people just come and go for the hot water. We had a late check in that they were very nice about and we checked out on time. See you guys again! read more

Pretty poor service tbh. Everything was an up charge. When we arrived, I stated, I am aware that there is a fee for checking in early, but just wanted you to know we'd be ok with that and would like to check in 30 min early. The response was in all capital letters. THERE IS A FEE TO CHECK IN EARLY! Ok. So maybe that was automated. But the front desk lady was lukewarm at best. And she counted the items we bought three times then finally said-- "where's the flip flops?!!" In reference to the sticker my husband and I were talking about that I had purchased. I showed her it was the sticker and she just said, "Oh!" She was aggressively snippy at this point. Me.. having a sharp tongue walked away rather than engage. Everywhere we went there were rules posted with fees for various things-- including a $250 missing or damaged towel fee. Astounding. As we sat, quietly in our private tub, we read rules about noise levels and quiet time. While we listened to the party happening out in the public pool. It was loud and rowdy and frankly annoying. The next day, as we stay at hot springs all over the world, we expected that we could stay in the public pool past checkout. Maybe we would soak for an hour out there if no one was around. Within seconds of that private convo in our room, we got a text stating it would cost us for another four hours of soak time. We looked at each other and said "No way". I had planned on bringing my group of 12 lady friends here for our annual girls trip this spring. But the attitude was such a turn off that we've decided to head to Black Rock instead. Sadly, a fairly decent place was ruined by an alarming attitude of "being on offense". Most of the real world are good people. It would do this place a lot of good to charge a bit more, allow an all day free soak for guests (Hot Sulfur Springs Co allows soaking the day you check in until 10pm the night after you check out.) And a smile, happy attitude would be great. When we checked out, a different group of people-- but both also seemed to bothered to help us check out. Doubtful we would go back. Wish things were different. Would have loved to give wonderful review-- especially since we love hot springs and try to support locals trying to make a living. I'm sure their attitude is reflective of their experience with some types. But that doesn't mean we all deserve the same treatment. Spent three days and two nights at this beautiful place had a wonderful time. The weather was perfect. The water was perfect. I arrived with a lot of back pain. I could not even walk standing straight up. You probably won't believe me, but when I got up of the water I was 100% pain-free it worked wonders for me. My back really needed the heat. This place is so clean and neat and organized, but you should bring plenty of food and if you don't have your own RV, I don't know what's available in the kitchens of all of the rooms and trailers but at least the one we were in you would need to bring your own pot and pan, spatula, salt and pepper and oil, etc.. If you don't have a kitchen, there is a common kitchen to use right next to the office. read more

We stayed a long weekend in the Steens Mountain Suite. The check in process is a breeze, the lobby/office is really nice with lots of logo'd stuff you can buy as souvenirs, as well as snacks, drinks, ice, smore's kits and firewood. We were given a brief rundown on how the place works, like the common room for coffee, tea, games, books, etc. and the camp kitchen. And of course, the hot springs and our room's private spring-fed tub. The outdoor areas are really well maintained and clean (except for the private tub area off the back of our room, see later note). The room is clean and spacious. Small closet, one suitcase stand, AC/heat, boot mat, TV, walk in shower, two robes. There are two chairs out front to relax in, or two padded chairs in the private soaking area. I was disappointed that the private soaking area wasn't a bit cleaner, in that there were quite a few cobwebs and bugs galore (alive and not). However, I'm not marking down for this, it is a buggy time of year and they probably should focus on the really important things to clean (like the tub, which was clean!). They have a little aquarium cleaning net to get any bugs out of the water, I appreciated that little detail! The tubs take a long time to fill, they instructed us to do 2/3 cold and 1/3 hot. Overall, I don't think the cold water taps here ever really get cold. Using this breakdown, our tub was a bit too hot. But it was large enough for two people which was great, and the space is very visually private, but you can hear your neighbors. Bed was comfortable, wifi works, lots of TV channel options, they provide hot spring towels and bathroom towels but didn't provide anything beyond hand & body soap in the bathroom. An extra couple of hooks for hanging all the things we ended up using would have been good. Or maybe a couple chairs in the room or a larger dresser for longer stays. But it was still very comfortable (just suggestions!). The hot springs are great, very modified compared to the natural state of a hot spring but they've done a nice job. Comfortable to soak in and even have a "lobster pot" for those that like their water HOT HOT. They even have a walking path around a couple of ponds that they have made, I think with recycled hot spring water. Really very nice, I wish I had known about them, I would have brought running shoes. The RV spots look really good too, huge for most sizes of rigs. Will definitely return again, probably with our travel trailer. This is a great jumping off point for the Steens Mountains and other local sites. Staff were friendly and helpful. read more

Excellent hot springs - love the large naturalistic yet comfy ( plenty of seating ledges) as well as a modern shower house/ changing areas a few steps away.. enjoyed our waterfront cabin- it was tiny but worked well for us - probably have to book a lodge room for full ADA suitability though ( as bathrooms are separate)... there's a little cook house and a large common room that is toasty and well appointed. Also good to know that it is very dog friendly with plenty of hiking opportunities (although I'd want to have a party large enough to take turns dog sitting while swapping out soaking in the hot springs )... As late nighters, the 24/7 accessibility was key, really enjoyed having this flexibility- will do this again! read more

There's a lot of good to say about the hot springs. The pool and experience maybe deserve 5 stars, but a couple of things would really makes this spectacular experience. The great - The pool. It's is nicer than the pictures capture. Concrete edges and a sloped to about 5' deep center and clean fine-crush gravel make the experience very relaxing. It's busy in the evening, but by 9pm (end of Sept) only the late evening adults were relaxing around the pool. A warming wood fire was running on the north side of the pool, and the sloped gravel made it an easy walk right out to the fire. The water is the perfect 'stay in as long as you want' temp across the entire pool. The hottest spots in the pool were wide and easy to find, unlike some developed pools where one has to find the hot pipe under the water. The pool is open 24 hours a day. Amazing! So nice to be able to dip and dine and late night dip again under the stars. More Great - the services. 24 hour warm bathrooms and showers available. A kitchen area where guests can cook or just bring dishes to clean. A separate relaxing room. Cozy, warm and coffee already made in the morning! The good - bathrooms and changing rooms Changing rooms are spacious and close to the pool. The men's and women's bathrooms and showers are also close to the pool on a safe-for-bare-feet surface. Bathrooms and showers are cleaned hourly from morning through late evening, making for a good experience. The reason they're not great is that the rooms are appropriate for the "Oregon Outback" - nothing fancy. More good - staff training. The reason this only gets a good is that I made a couple of calls asking about filling an RV fresh water tank on site, since we didn't have an RV spot. If the staff had just said, "We have all the bathrooms, showers, cooking and cleaning you'll need", the problem would have been solved. The check in process was smooth and the staff took the time to talk through the amenities with each group as they checked in. Staff was professional and helpful at every interaction. Gravel overflow camping gets a 'good' because a lack of space reservation made for a bit of negotiating with people who had set out chairs to 'reserve' some space. The Other than that, parking on the top of the hill gives great morning and evening views - see the pics taken from our spot. The Meh - RV services for those without an RV spot. No fresh water fill up or dump on-site, without RV hookup. Since the hot springs are a long ride for most visitors, this would be a great addition. A short drive down the road to the Crane Store and Cafe solved this problem. Finally - Moving vehicle traffic behind the buildings would open the whole center of the hot springs to a pedestrian paradise. I'm surprised there are almost no trees to provide some shade in the summer months. We'll be back. read more

We have going to the hot springs a couple times a year going through the area and sorry to say it has become a stop we are going to omit since our last two visits. It's as if the government and neo nazis unfriendly have taken over. Just to pay for a half hour soak took 20 minute of detailed information on us even though they had us in the computer from past visits. The staff were not friendly as in the past. We absolutely loved our time at Crane Hot Springs and can't wait to return! So peaceful and relaxing, we stayed in the spring for hours a couple times a day! Bring noodles for floating, or they do sell them in the little store. There's picnic tables for day use, a kitchen to use and so much space you'll never feel cramped. The bathrooms are clean and maintained throughout the day. If you come for overnight, there's a ton of parking, some teepees to rent and some cabins as well. We were in an RV so I don't have any experience with those. The teepees do have their own soaking pools. The staff isn't super outgoing and friendly, other than the one camp host, they pretty much do their job and keep to themselves. Would have liked to feel a little more welcomed but nonetheless it's an amazing stop and a must visit! read more

Honestly, it was an amazing experience until the next day when I was already in Idaho I was charged $35 even though I used a day pass. A $10 day pass from 9:30 PM exiting the area at seven in the morning since I slept in my car. The rooms are over $180. There was no other feasible option since I am traveling for Christmas. Honestly, don't waste your time. They'll just put all their money into their own upgrades not helping you with the updates of the rooms. So we heard about the Crane Hot Springs on Instagram. On an Oregon roadtrip we decided to spend a couple of nights. TBH it was better than I expected. We stayed in the trailer they have set up for rent. One of the reasons we did is it has its own bathroom and is dog friendly. Check in was easy and the staff even walked me out for a quick tour. We settled in then went to the pool. It is really nice. The is a large pool (more like a small pond). It has concrete around part of it and benches built in to relax. There is a kids pool and an adult only hot tub. They have plenty of changing rooms and showers. We never had to wait for either. It is true many of the lodging rooms do not have private restrooms but you can get them. It is more like glamping. The pool is open 24 hrs a day for guests staying at the resort. While we were there every member of the staff were courteous and friendly. They were always around cleaning and maintaining the area. In fact one person was scrubbing the concrete by hand in the pool. We will definitely be back. This place is great read more

This was a stop on our 10 day road trip. We stayed 2 nights in the honeymoon cabin room. We had a great time during our stay! The private tub on our rooms patio was an awesome bonus. Several people that were camping, and in the teepees, asked to see our room and they all loved the patio. There were quite a few bugs that would congregate on the outside furniture and fall in the water in the evening but a few shakes to get them off towels and a few scoops to save them from drowning and they minded their own business. The rooms are nicely decorated and very clean. We were comfy in the AC too. Robes & towels were provided for us to use. The outside soaking pool was nice and relaxing but if you venture to the cooler areas of the water you'll start to feel little nips/bites from bugs in the water. The warmer the water, the less bugs. Let's be real, this is a warm pool of water & lodging in the middle of the desert. If you think it's going to be bug, dirt and critter free this is not the place for you to visit. If you want a relaxing stay with a hot spring to unwind in, come stay here. The staff is super friendly and gave us some tips on where to find things in the nearby town. They seem to be busy working all day to keep the place nice and running. We probably won't venture over this way again anytime soon but we'd recommend it to anyone looking for a fun place to stay with a natural hot spring. read more

This place doesn't live up to word of mouth recommendations I've heard. It could be really classy but they've scaled the campground too much. I'd rather be turned away than have a bad experience. To support this much camping they need: - more flush toilets and showers - no generators in dry camp area and enforced quiet hours - limit overflow camping to self contained and have a no generator zone near the dry camp area - more pool areas if the spring will support it. (Ideally hotter/adults only/clothing optional but that can be owners choice) The pools and glamping areas are really nice and the staff are good. I won't be back but have great hopes for the potential of this place. read more

Love the serenity that we feel when we come here and retreat!! It has been almost every weekend!! I camp in a travel trailer when we come except the first time we stayed in the trailer upfront lol...we usually stay in overflow one and overflow two as they are the most economical. In reality the best option if you have pets is overflow two as more room for them, but remember there is a leash rule too. Beautiful views all around. Yes, it may have different options for you to choose and placed in different locations but that does bring the character to Crystal Crane. It has a trailer and some cabins up front along with three tepees set up in different areas and some 4 cabin rooms around the pond and some rooms straight across too! You can stay in one if there options or bring something to camp in! It is a family operated business along with loyal employees there which makes it feel like you're right at home. Yes, they're expanding since last year they have added in another structure and updated some of the RV sites as well; and indeed they're doing even more and I'm sure stuff I didn't list!! You will be excited with what's to come but what is here. Also expansion is coming soon right behind the pond.... If you want to relax and be away from it all then this is your place... Yes, make sure to bring your food and snacks drinks etc and there is a camp kitchen to cook in with stuff but be prepared and bring the things that you like also a fridge to use too! Do not believe the website. If you have a dog they give you a small cabin with no running water no bathroom and on top of that they charge you $15 a day. My wife has a medical condition, causing her to have to use the restroom several times at night. Tonighy she will have to walk to a outhouse without any light with no water. Meanwhile, for $15 less and no animal you got a nice looking full-size hotel apartment with TV running water, shower and large bathroom. This is an amazing place!! We stayed in the starry night cabin which has heat, a sink, a toilet and power outlets. This was great as the weather was cold and windy so staying inside at night was very nice. It was a cute and clean cabin and is dog friendly! The private soaking tubs are worth the 15 bucks a person. Next time I'm renting the 5th wheel. It is swank. Got the honeymoon suite but didn't use the private tub. We had lightning so had to leave the big pool and the rains didn't stop. Stopped by here for a few hours on a Saturday afternoon - what a great spot! The fee was nominal, and we got to use their showers, the "pond" (really a pool with gravel bottom - very nice), and picnic area. This was great after several days camping in the desert. Crystal Crane hot springs is amazing! We stayed in the Dream Catcher Teepee. Bed was comfortable pillows were amazing! It has a heater and outlets. It's your own little fenced in area. Fire pit, own soaking pool, picnic table, cute bench & little grill to cook on. The only complaint I have is the gap between the Teepee and the wall... I could see the neighbors and their children/dogs.. so when trying to walk around naked to & from your pool you had to be cautious. We had some tarp clips, so we pinned our hammock to the teepee and the fence for more privacy=) Big soaking pond is amazing! It's just a great place to be! We brought extra blankets, but slept beyond warm! We did get hit with a storm. Teepee holds up nicely. read more

This place was suggested by a friend. It's pretty great. We got the pinecone room and have our own private patio with our own soaking pool. It's pretty great. Staff are friendly, it's a small run establishment and check in time is strict, so when a few hours early we had to run to town and chill in the public area but couldn't use the community hot springs until check in unless we paid extra. It all worked out, room is great and our own private soaking tub is perfect. We didn't go in the community pool, but we absolutely loved our private tub and would definitely come back. We will definitely come back, there are so many options here. We definitely want to come back for a Teepee and Glamping with our own tub, or bring our RV here and rent a soaking tub room. Pros: - Crane Hot Springs is a beautiful, developed hot spring. It features a very large hot spring pond, as well as some lodging units that have in-room hot tubs, and you can rent private soaking tubs in the bathhouse for $15/hour. The private soaking tubs are really nice - it feels rustic, charming, meditative. The big pond has less of a sanctuary vibe and more of a hotel pool vibe with people splashing around with styrofoam noodles. The water is good and hot. - There's free coffee all day in the nice little community room. - If you hit it on a day when there are not a lot of RVs with loud generators, the campground can be very peaceful. - This part of the world is stunning: beautiful high desert, mountains in the distance, migrating birds stopping at nearby Malheur Wildlife Refuge. It's beautiful. Cons: - The Sage Inn rooms are really low quality and I will not stay in them again. Even at the price point of $89/night (regular price) and $123.75/night (holiday price), they still don't feel worth the money. Our room did not have even a table or chairs in it, nowhere to lay a book or sit and play cards or anything. Literally just a bed and a dresser that didn't have a knob on the drawer which made it hard to open and close. The walls are so thin you can hear people in the next room snoring. We were woken up at 7am by the sound of a dog barking incessantly in the next room. There are no bathrooms, running water, or kitchens in the Sage Inn rooms, which is made clear on the website. - The port-a-potty by the Sage Inn rooms does not seem to be cleaned or drained regularly, it was almost overflowing. - There are no lights leading the way from the Sage Inn to the rest of the resort. - The Camp Kitchen smelled bad to me, like old bacon grease. - This place is really a huge RV parking lot, at least these days. I'm sure that's a pro for RV owners, but it's not for people who want a quieter experience without the sound of generators. A lot of developed hot springs are surrounded by campgrounds, this one really leans on the RV side of things. - The staff seem to be a buffer between disappointed travelers like myself and owners/managers who aren't interested in hospitality. After our first unsatisfactory evening, we asked the front desk if we could get our money back for the third night of our 3-night stay, as we were only a few hours within the 36-hour cancellation window. The staff refused, saying it was against "policy" and they advised, "You can just leave" as in, we could leave early without any refund. While this was true, we could just leave without a refund, it didn't seem like the best way to treat a customer that you hope will return one day, recommend the resort to others, and write favorable reviews etc. - There are no indications of Crane's connection to the regional Indigenous tribes, so seeing big teepees, often used on the marketing materials, feels appropriative. Suggestions for Crane: - In your emails prior to guests, tell us to bring the following, since these are necessary items and you do not supply them: forks, spoons, bowls, cups for drinking, flashlights. - Empty and clean the port-a-potties regularly before they start to smell awful and before they become so full they seem in danger of spilling out of the pot. - Add some kind of illumination from the Sage Inn to the main office and soaking pool. This will help guests who have trouble seeing, have mobility issues, are older, etc etc. - Take some courses or read some books or talk with someone about hospitality and how you can increase the level of hospitality at your resort. In sum: 1 star for the resort and 5 stars for the hot spring gives us 3 stars. My advice is to stay elsewhere in the area and come to Crane to soak for the day. Or try the higher priced Crane lodgings if you have the dough and want the 24-hour access to the water. read more

On a trip through the western states. Found ourselves with a long, long two day drive between Bend, OR and McCall, ID. Saw Crane Hot Springs on yelp. Good reviews and decided to take the chance. They had 1 RV spot left when we called. It was a dry camp site but that's ok. When we pulled in we were immediately impressed with the business. Clean. Organized. Well managed. Our site was nice (other than loud snorer 50 yards away). Ha. The employees were well trained and attentive. They had it all organized. The hot springs were super clean. Like the cleanest I've seen in the west. I'll come back here again for sure and have already recommended to several friends who drive between Montana and California. Highly recommended. Make a reservation as they were quite full. BUT it does not feel crowded at all. Camp sites and RV sites are spread out well. This is a must stop! read more

I love soaking in hot springs and can sit in them most of the day. Why? Because hot springs or mineral pools are so good for your skin and your health. And I love a hot pool. Not a warm pool but a hot one. We stayed in Running Horse Teepee. We had a king size bed to enjoy as well as our very own private soaking tub that had a window for us to look out of. Early in the morning while everyone slept, we enjoyed the Crane Hot Springs Pond. It was such a relaxing and wonderful getaway. The only downfall was not having our own restroom. They have many different sleeping options here. We will definitely come back here with our girls. read more

What we Love about Crystal Crane Hot Springs. So quiet, peaceful and relaxing. Beautiful sunsets and sunrises. The updates to the pond including the paved patio, seats and paved entry into the pond are great. Everything is super clean and regularly sanitized for Covid. We never felt crowded in the pond, people spaced out and if it was busy, we just waited an hour and it opened up, because it is open 24/7 you can go any time. What we didn't love was barking dogs that owners didn't respond to and allowed them to continue barking. Unfortunately, there is not a lot to do in the area. There is a cafe in Crane, several restaurants/bars in Burns and Malheur National Wildlife preserve. We had a nice day trip to French Glen. read more

A great hot springs with quirky charm, located in a vastly under-appreciated part of Oregon. Wait, why am I telling you about this place again? There's a rather large "lake" that is free if you're staying on the grounds, they also have private (clean!) rooms for rent as well, if you want it hotter and/or more romantic. It's a great place to stop on your way to the Alvord Desert area. read more

We need to talk about the 500 pound porta potty in the room... This place is weird and the owners seem to be completely absent of forethought about how to go about expanding. There's only one designated toilet outside the main building. The rest are porta potties. They seem to have come into some money because since the last time we were here they have built onto the main pond by giving it a concrete rim and some other fancifications. We stayed in the Eagles Nest Tipi which was nice except for the construction lighting hanging from the inside poles, the cemented metal anchor in the middle of the floor that I stubbed my toe on in the night, the 360 degree surround gravel and the view of sewage tanks from the opening first thing in the morning. Everything seems half-assed here. They are building.... That's for sure. Random buildings are strewn about here and there... And gravel... My god, the gravel! The closest restroom to the tipis is a Porta potty and it dawned on me mid-dump that if it wasn't for the plastic walls I'd be pooping in the middle of a parking lot. This didn't align with their sign on the road that says., "where water and relaxation "collide"". Collide? Seems kinda violent imagery... Maybe join or merge would be more soothing? read more

Loved it. It was a bit busy but to be expected on a Saturday night. Still plenty of room for us to keep distance. Heat was perfect for myself and my girlfriend. I would say around 101 constant with a constant flow of much hotter water kept us at the perfect temp. The grounds are clean and the price is very fair. Staff was very pleasant and patient to my constant questions. read more
