Dinner in an old folk's home you say? Well if anything it's going to be interesting!
I was visiting my boyfriends' grandparents in the village of Maidens in Ayrshire and they offered to take us for dinner in Malin Court. 'It's an old folks home' bf's gran said with a cheeky glint in her eye. I didn't want to offend so just smiled politely and waited to see what we'd find.
Lots of wee old ladies sitting in a circle around some tea and biscuits, it's not.
We drove up to the front of the hotel. On one side there's an old folks home and to the right there's the hotel and Cotters restaurant. Its open to the public however we were told some of the residents from the home do come in for their dinner occasionally.
As we had booked at 5.30pm we had to order from the High Tea menu which consisted of a main course plus tea, coffee and scones plus cakes.
We sat down and were offered drinks, Once we ordered we were then given four portions of brown and white bread toasted. Thought this was a bit random but tucked in anyway as we were starving.
Main dishes were pretty much pub staples with macaroni cheese, steak and onion pie, sirloin steak etc. I opted for the scampi which came with carrots, peas and salad! As well as a huge portion of chips. Portions are generous here. It was exactly what I was looking for, hearty, crispy and tasty meal.
Boyf had the haddock which was delicious, fresh crispy batter with homemade tartar sauce.
Gran had the poached salmon salad which was absolutely enormous! Two salmon fillets plus a mountain of salad, coleslaw as well as strawberries and raspberries dotted over the plate. Poor thing could only manage around a quarter of the plate. I did feel like it was a bit of a waste with so much food going untouched.
After mains, we had teas and coffee with warm homemade scones with butter and jam (no cream unfortunately) and then meringues, strawberry tarts and rice crispy tray bake.
Overall, it's the perfect place to take your grandparents or for a family meal, its great value for money with high tea from £11 all in inc the scones etc. read more
