It is a truth universally acknowledged that London is an herbivore's paradise. Nowadays there are so many great vegan restaurants in the Smoke that it would be entirely possible to do nothing but eat around the clock - damn what would surely be the dire consequences! - and never get to the end of them.
So I do not speak lightly in declaring Mallow my new favourite. This place has everything: a fabulous location right next to Southwark Cathedral on the edge of Borough Market, 10 minutes from the Globe and lots of other Bankside attractions; lovely decor and ambience; friendly and attentive (but not too attentive, if you know what I mean) staff; and frankly TERRIFIC food.
There's been a trend in recent years for vegan fast food like burgers, tacos, chili dogs, etc. Which is all very good - more options means more accessibility - but there are times when I wonder where the plants in "plant-based" have gone. Mallow's menu manages to hit a sweet spot that includes what looked like a great chicken burger (next time) alongside lots of more plant-forward dishes, which is a very welcome development. More to the point, every dish is executed and presented beautifully.
We started with the baby gem hearts, the summer rolls, and the tempura fungi. All three were delicious and satisfying without making us unable to order a main; even the tempura was so light, crispy, and moreish that I truthfully declared that I wanted to fill a bathtub with the stuff and just climb in. Alone. We wanted to have dessert so we split the tempeh gado-gado for a main. It was fresh, complex, and bursting with vegetables: just what we wanted. They were doing such good business that they'd sold out of two dessert options, but we happily split the banana pudding and may have actually drunk the remaining rum sauce straight from the little pitcher. (I'll neither confirm nor deny.)
Throughout the evening we had friendly and professional service from Ashley, who was happy to answer questions, make suggestions, and generally ensure we had a lovely time. We left feeling happily full - but not uncomfortably so - and enjoyed a walk home along the river. All in all it was a great, relaxing ending to a very hot and busy day, and I look forward to my next visit. I should also mention that I'd originally had a reservation for the previous night but had to reschedule at fairly short notice, and that process was smooth, easy, and entirely free of drama, which is by no means always the case in such situations. We visit London several times a year, and from now on Mallow will be among our first dining destinations when we arrive. Highly recommended. read more
