We went here for the New Year's Eve Dinner Buffet, which was $29.95 plus tax per person instead of the standard $17.95 quoted on the website (may be out of date) for a normal Wednesday, quite a big markup for a holiday. They also operate a similar Monday night buffet at the Italian Community Center in Albany. Reservations were required which I phoned in earlier this week. Mallozzi's is more of a function and catering hall which serves up primarily Italian American food. This place has several nicely carpeted dining rooms and the tables are covered in nice linens with candlelight. I can recall that I was at Mallozzi's over 20 years ago with my old man for a BMX banquet and I had the ziti & meatballs, which was pretty good including the sauce. The New Year's Eve Dinner Buffet overall had very good offerings including: 9 hot dishes (gnocchi, eggplant rolatini, stuffed rigatoni with bolognese, braised veal shanks with risotto, leg of lamb, roasted game hen with cous cous, stuffed pork, braciola, roasted root vegetables), carving station (prime rib au jus & ham with dried fruit chutney), soup, green salad, cold salads, antipasto, cheeses, fresh fruit, and an array of dessert specialties from the Villa Italia Bakery (owned by Mallozzi's). Coffee, tea, and soda are included in the price of the buffet. Drinks from the bar are extra. The stuffed rigatoni and gnocchi were both excellent and the roasted hen and eggplant rolatini were tasty as well. The carved prime rib was done medium well and the ham with dried fruit chutney had a nice kick. The butternut squash soup was hot and creamy. The desserts were very good including a good variety of Italian cookies, small fancies, cream puffs, eclairs, chocolate mouse (hard chocolate shell stuffed with a rich chocolate mousse), carrot cake, hazelnut cake, cheesecake, and tiramisu (the light kind). Some of those desserts were very sweet and rich and went really well with the fresh brewed coffee, which was very good. There was a good sized crowd here and the buffet items were restocked often. However, when we received the dinner check, the waitress announced that an 18 percent gratuity was added to the check, which we did not expect, especially for only a party of 2 people and not a large group. Maybe it's a policy here. This dicey automatic gratuity issue has been discussed on Yelp Talk threads in different cities including this thread http://www.yelp.com/topic/new-york-automatic-gratuities I can recall Cafe Fleuri in Boston adding a 15 percent tip to my lunch bill when I was dining solo using a gift certificate, but I gave my waiter an additional 5 percent voluntarily. We were considering giving a 15-20 percent tip for this self serve buffet, but I had to agree with my buddy, it's 18 percent if they insisted (we were aiming for 20 percent, if it were voluntary). At least this 18 percent gratuity was calculated before the 8 percent meals tax was added. Anywho, the service was very good and attentive. Our waitress explained to us how the buffet worked. Our used dishes were cleared often and we were offered refills on soda and coffee several times. Overall, we had solid good buffet food on the pricey side and good consistent service, so it's a solid 4 stars. read more

I like Italian food, but I'm usually hard pressed to find a place that is, what I would consider, knock me on my ass good...especially in Washington State. There has been an exception or two, one of which I reviewed, but a majority has been a real bummers. Which brings me to Mallozzi's of Schenectady, NY. First off it's an Italian Buffett...a first for me, and secondly, all the food was excellent! Now it doesn't have the buffet variety that Salty's or the Casino's have, but what they did offer was good, fresh and filling...not to say that the afore mentioned are not, I'm just saying.... What made this unique was that it had this intimate restaurant feeling despite the buffet, complete with a trio going from table to table serenading the patrons, one on the accordian, another on a mandolin and a lovely lady on vocals. The antipasto section offered this calamari that was probably some of the best I've eaten, fresh and not rubbery with excellent flava....meatballs the size of a toddler's fist, crab stuffed sole, egg-plant rolatini, a carving station with flank steak, pork loin, ham, a pasta bar that offered rigatonni or spaghetti with fresh made sauce...I opted for the spaghetti with a vodka cream sauce....mmmmm...needless to say, Italian buffet was a hit. I can say this now, because at the time I ate so much I was in literal pain and discomfort and swore off buffets for the rest of my life...I'm not even exaggerating....I couldn't breath... serious shameless gluttony.....how I love and hate buffets! Was it worth the pain? Hell yeah! And now that I'm better I'm going back on my swearing off of buffet's....unfortunately I can't go back to Mallozzi's until my next visit back east.....bummers. Only four stars because despite our server being very personable and stuff, he wasn't on it when it came to clearing empty plates the way I would expect most buffet's would. Too many times we would come back after a plate filling round to find empty plates still on the table.....but it's all good! read more

Staying at the Belvedere next door offered a 20% discount on the buffet making it $15 and some change. It is a buffet so don't expect much, but even at $15 I was not excited having went there. Sirloin carving was rare but not even slightly warm, salad was a bowl of romain with Kraft Italian dressing, there what looked like a frozen pizza appetizer, and an antipasto section that was well picked over by 6:30. Also a $4 draft Stella in a 6oz glass. Nice. The meatballs and the fried fish with the caper sauce were what made the dinner worth the price. Server just started so I can't speak on the service. The folks at the Belvedere recommend the shit out of this place. They must get some kickback. If you're starving or can eat plate after plate of food, this is your place. read more

All I can say is bring your appetite. I think they are only open on Wednesdays for the Italian buffet or for special events but that's plenty. They always have a carving station as well as a pasta station. The vodka sauce and alfredo sauce are especially tasty. Then there is a huge array of Italian meats and cheeses along with different salads on one table. Another table full of entrees that change every week such as eggplant parm or rollatini, chicken marsala, sausage and meatballs, potatoes and other vegetables, and much more. And last but not least the dessert table with pastries and cakes from Villa Italia. The service was a little too friendly if that's possible. Its one thing to be attentive and helpful but its another to be overbearing and annoying when you are with a group of people who want to relax and converse and aren't in a rush to be out the door. read more

Went here for Easter Buffet. Everything was amazing. So many different foods to choose from. Our favorite is the greens and beans. They are the best. They also have so many amazing desserts to choose from. I walked by it about 6 times before I decided what I wanted. We had 25 people in our party and everyone complimented how good the food was. The service was great as well. Everyone also commented on how good the decaf coffee was. I wish I knew the brand. Thank you Malozzi's for making our Easter a special one. read more

Here for a banquet held on a Sunday at noon. Buffet included breakfast and lunch foods ( sausage, eggs, bacon, pasta, chicken, salad). All the food was great and we were able to hold our function here and give out end of year awards at cost of $17. Per person so the meal must have been very reasonable priced. Went for the Grand Italian Buffet they have every Wednesday and I have to say, for $18.95, it's a pretty sweet deal. I mean, the selection is your pretty run of the mill Italian stuff, and it is a buffet, but they do execute it really well. I suppose there is merit in the simplicity. When I went, there was chicken marsala, roasted sirloin, leg of lamb, some garlic eggplant, smashed red potatoes with cheddar cheese, a seafood stew, and of course a pasta bar. I must say, the vodka cream pasta was pretty good. I'm not going to say it's a knock your socks off place, but it's definitely good eats worth trying out if you're hungry. read more

I couldn't have asked for a better wedding planner, she knows what she is doing! Highly HIGHLY recommend the Wednesday night Italian buffet. First, the price can't be beat and the quality and amount of food is just exceptional. There's food for the most and least finicky eaters. And then not to mention that the restaurant itself is beautiful. I've been 3 times to the Wednesday night buffet in the last few months and each time has been spectacular and they change the menu just a little so it's never a bore. I attended a wedding Memorial Day weekend at Mallozzi's. All I have to say is PERFETTO!!! The Mallozzi's know exactly what they are doing and left no stone unturned. The food was fantastic, the place is gorgeous and the waitstaff was always near to help in any way they could. My husband and I stayed at the Belvedere Hotel which is conveniently located across the parking lot. I was pleasantly surprised by how nice and clean the room was and that they remembered my requests for a specific type of accommodation. This place is as good as it gets if you are looking for a place for your reception for your wedding. I wanted to book my wedding here 3 years ago but... 1 it was already booked and 2 it is costly but totally worth the money. I haven't went to a wedding here but I bet it is spectacular. I can only imagine how nice it would be. We have also have had our holiday parties here a few times in the past and everyone that attends has nothing but great things to say about this place. From the food to the accommodating wait staff. What I can rant and rave about this place is the FOOD.... Top notch. They have a buffet every Monday night and it is one, if not the best buffet I have ever been to. If you like variety then you are in the right place. They also host a buffet at their other location, The Italian community center on western ave, every Wednesday evening. I've been to both locations and I prefer Mallozzi's better, I know it is the same owner same food but I think the food taste better at Mallozzi's and I love their ballroom. I try to make it here at least 2 to 3 times a year. So getting to the buffet, as soon as you get there, your waiter will tell you what and where all the different types of food they are serving, and what table you can get them at. They have a carving station usually with 2 different kinds of meat. The night I went they had beef tenderloin and roasted pork,with apples on top of it. Both had sauces server on the side if you wanted. The beef had a dark gravy, I wouldn't call it a au jus but it was wonderful. The pork was served with a horseradish sauce I thought I wouldn't like it but it surprised me, it was good. They have a table with all different salads, different Italian cold cuts and cheeses. All worth looking at and sampling but don't fill up there. The night I went their dinner choices were, roasted vegetables, ( pretty good ) eggplant parm, ( phenomenal) I wish they had the eggplant rollatini out on the buffet but they didn't. I swear to you that eggplant rollatini change my life, I still today have dreams about it, it is that GOOD! Next they had chicken marsla, ( it was tasty but a little dry ) roasted potatoes, ( awesome! might I add) and some type of fish I believe it was haddock in a red marina sauce ( I could have taken that or leave it). After eating all of that I decided it was time to go hit up the pasta station. This is the main reason why I love this buffet, their vodka sauce and al fredo sauce are ridiculously good, and they always ask if you want garlic in the sauce I am a garlic junky so I always opt for more than the average person. To finish they have a decent size dessert table with Italian pastries, cakes and fruit. Such a nice ending to a meal that hits all the right notes. read more

I have frequented this restaurant for over a year weekly and was extremely pleased with the food quality and with a waitress that offered superior service. I wanted fore nothing. This week I was told that she was no longer at the restaurant and would have left but was convinced to stay. My experience was very poor. The food had not changed but the service was sub-par. Since I am not one to submit myself or others to such an experience I am no longer able to attend the establishment. I would not consider this establishment unless you are not concerned about extremely poor service. read more

This was the most upsetting experience. As a bride I was trying to book my venue at this location. I made a couple of appointments with Jen which went great. However, when I was given the number to contact the chef it was a headache. I would call him and he would respond a week later. Trying to schedule a date to taste the food was another pain. I told them I wouldnt put a deposit down until I tried the food since they dont allow outside catering. ( I also understood that I would need to pay to taste the food, which was understandable. Most places do.) However, the chef was constantly busy to even schedule a meeting with me. I told Jen that he was dragging his feet. I wanted it to be quickly done so that I could put a deposit down to hold the dates I had picked out. I called Jen a few times after that to let her know about the chef. She told me she would look into it and never called me back. Throughout this whole experience she constantly pronounced my name wrong, after correcting her every time and I had talked to her a handful of times, so it was getting a little obnoxious. And she did forget to call me after we had scheduled a particular time to talk to get the details settled. I obviously went another route and chose another venue to book. Mallozzi's have a lot of good reviews so Im honestly just surprised to have had this disappointing experience. read more
