I have made the incredibly difficult decision to close Geshon's Deli & Caterers. Friday, January 30th, 2026, was our final day. This decision was not made lightly as Gershon's has been an integral part of my life since I was a little girl. After my father's untimely passing, I took over with one clear mission, to honor his legacy, keep his dream alive, and continue providing quality service and "good food for good people." For more than 60 years, Gershon's has been shaped by the people who walked through our doors. Every employee, customer, client, and friend has played a role in our story and our success. Unfortunately, rising food costs, ongoing economic challenges, the lasting effects of COVID, and the loss of my final opportunity this week have left me with no other choice. To everyone who has supported me over the past nine years, thank you. Thank you for the memories, for trusting us with your celebrations, holidays, milestones, and everyday moments. I know Gershon's is a well-known local institution. We've been here a handful of times over the years and, I had their sandwiches on a weekly basis periodically thanks to group lunch orders at a previous workplace, and the experience overall has been mixed. On good days, they can serve one of the best sandwiches. Otherwise, I've had several occasions where I was left wondering why my pastrami sandwich was literally two pieces of bread with a small bit of pastrami - no dressing or anything else, and no questions asked. I like the attentiveness of the staff whenever we come here in person whether for diner in or takeaway, and their fresh pickles are wonderfully crunchy and worth looking forward to. They have some delicious pies, too, and the chocolate cream pie is our fave. I would go back, but the inconsistency over time certainly has dampened my enthusiasm that I may have once had. read more

Arrived at 12:15pm, and there were only 2 people seated, but quickly filled up for the lunch rush. The server was friendly and the food prepared in a timely manner. The food was good, and the sandwiches were large. I was thrilled to discover they had cheesecake from the Carnegie Deli! That alone is reason to go back ;) read more

Stopped into Gershon's for a quick pastrami on rye to go recently. You will not be disappointed by their huge selection of sandwiches such as corned beef, pastrami and the list goes on. And did I mention their freshly made soups and salads? Of course not to be outdone by their delicious looking desserts such as cheesecake and rugelach just to name a few. A deli lover's paradise indeed! They are in fact well known for their catering and have been serving the local area for more than 60 years. My pastrami on rye with half sour pickle tasted good and was fresh. My only wish was that it could have been a bit more substantial. The sandwich shown on their website was definitely more stacked, and it was what drew me over there. Still, it was a tasty lunch and I definitely could've eaten more! read more

I didnt get the concept of advertising as a Jewish deli when it isn't remotely kosher. The sit down restaurant part isn't clearly marked that you sit down and get a waitress rather than going to the counter which apparently is to-go only. Staff seemed disorganized and inefficient. Pretty disappointed in the sandwiches I picked up from Gershon's today. I got a turkey sandwich with lettuce and tomato and my husband got a chicken salad sandwich. Nothing fancy! However, the sandwiches looked like they were slapped together in two seconds. When I opened up the wrapping to my turkey sandwich, every topping slid off. It doesn't help that the bread they use is very flimsy..it didn't stand a chance to the generous portion of meat on the sandwich. I will say, the meat is very good and the pickles are a treat, but considering the total was over $30 for something so basic, I expected better. read more

I placed an online order for a chicken Cordon Bleu sub. Chicken, ham, and cheese on a roll. Nothing complicated. Somehow that turned into a $20 barely foot long sub with a 38 minute wait. For a sandwich. No explanation, no urgency, just slow service and overpriced food. The parking situation makes it even worse. Right in front of the building, they built a patio for outdoor seating, which is virtually unused, instead of keeping those spots available for parking. I had to park nearly a block away just to grab my order. Here's a suggestion. If most of your lunch crowd consists of retirees who can hang out for over an hour, maybe consider closing indoor dining from 11:30 to 1:00 so working people can actually find a parking spot and pick up lunch in a reasonable amount of time. The food itself wasn't bad, but it is not worth the price and definitely not worth the wait. Unless you have time to waste, skip this place during lunch. read more

My wife, son, and I had lunch there today. I had an "overstuffed"pastrami and corned beef sandwich on rye bread, my wife had a Reuben sandwich, and my son had a teriyaki Chicken sandwich. My wife's sandwich was the best, on toasted rye bread served with rippled potato chips and a pickle. My sandwich was practically a Reuben except it was not toasted. It would have been much better toasted since it also came with coleslaw and Russian dressing with pickle and the rippled potato chips potato chips. It had a normal amount of meat but it certainly was not overstuffed like its name. The chips were a good compliment to the sandwiches and the pickles, which I assume were homemade were crunchy but needed salt. My son's teriyaki chicken sandwich had some lettuce and pineapple slices. It was served with a pickle too but no chips. He said the meat was a bit dry and one side tasted overcooked. He also commented that it needed some kind of sauce. The place and atmosphere is laid back and slower that most places- which I prefer. When we arrived we were told to sit ourselves at a clean table- we only saw one clean table that was not occupied, two table occupied and the rest needed to be cleaned or were being cleaned. At the end of our lunch, my son ordered a French cheesecake that was served with strawberries and whipped cream in separate bowls. It was very tasty and allowed us to share it easily while having fun cutting the cheesecake and dunking it in the whipped cream while trying to add the strawberry topping. Overall, we enjoyed the food, place, and service but felt it was a bit expensive. The sandwich platters were about $17 or $18 each and only the Reuben seemed reasonably priced. read more

Everyone in my house has Flu A. On day 8 I finally am feeling better and ventured out for the first time in over a week. (Don't worry I paid online and didn't touch anything!) No appetite all week. I ordered some "Jewish penicillin" (matza ball soup), some bagels, half a turkey sandwich, kishke, cornbread, ring pasta salad with Tuna, and of course it came with a house made pickle. I ate all the soup. And nibbles on everything else with my kids. It really hit the spot. Was exactly what the dr ordered. When I walked in at 1130 am they were very busy. However I was immediately asked what I wanted from a young man behind the counter. Lots of workers. Which is great bc lots of customers. I told him I had ordered online and gave me my name. He quickly grabbed it and said he just had to pour my soup. I love that they waited to do this so it was nice and hot. He packaged it nicely and I was on my way. He was very kind. The place is clean. On Saturday afternoon, I was hungry for a sandwich and I stopped by Gershon's Deli. I went inside, and the place has a small store, a restaurant, and a kitchen behind the counter. The menu has a list of variety of deli meat, fresh made soup, and dishes. The people working there were friendly and ready to take your order. I ordered a large pastrami sandwich. There are two sizes: regular and large. The sizes were based on the amount of meat in a sandwich. There were choices of bread and cheese. I ordered rye bread and Swiss cheese with it. I asked about mustard and they make their own mustard. I accepted it and in less than 10 minutes the sandwich was ready. It comes with a pickle. The pastrami was tender and the mustard was perfect. The size of the sandwich was big and worth the price. I'm going back again and will bring my family and friends. read more

The typical Jewish deli with its many soulful tummy warming dishes can be found at Gershon's. Found myself near Gershon's recently and needing lunch, cousin and I went in hoping for the best. While there are multiple tables, during lunch time patrons are encouraged to share tables. Our table buddies were almost finished with their pastrami sandwiches so I was unable to get a gander of what it would look like. Cousin ordered a salad with a scoop of tuna salad. Thinking back, I don't know where my mind was that a pic wasn't taken. Suffice it to say, it was a large enough greens for the salad, but the mound of tuna could have made two nice sandwiches. Not knowing how lean the pastrami was opted for roast beef. Don't get your hopes up. It was only slightly rare, not just recently deceased. Finally went with a safe BLT. Only complaint was that there could have been more lettuce. Pickle - very good. Chips - well there were chips. Staff - delightful, fast for the number of people dining in. Bad items? I think being lunch time parking is a bit of an issue for all the businesses. Oh, more lettuce. Pluses - there is a full deli with many items you can get to go including knishes and kugel. Yes, will return to sample the wonders of the neighborhood Jewish Deli. Well worth the trip. read more

I ordered the beef brisket platter. The platter contains beef brisket, sliced, and it was braised. Not sure why I expected something a bit different. The pumpernickel bread tasted store bought. Gave the pickle to my significant other and she said it was fine. The potato pancake/hash thing was still cold on the inside, and a bit too burnt on the outside by taste. Meal was ok. Nothing special. Perhaps I ordered wrong. Should have gone for one of the sandwiches. Seating was prompt. Server was polite and efficient. Crowded during lunchtime. Parking a bit tough as it is street parking only as far as I can tell. When I am in the area again I might give them another try. read more

Went for my first lunch at Gershon's - i used to live right down the road from this deli/restaurant. They have all the typical deli meat sandwiches , soups etc. but I decided to get the triple decker turkey BLT on toasted wheat bread. The sandwich was huge! I got potato salad and a pickle on the side. I loved the sandwich but had to take half of it home- which I rarely do. My Mom got a liverwurst sandwich- which I also love. Mmm, NY-style delis. Everyone talks about pizza and bagels as the two Metro NY items that are hard to find elsewhere, but I'd argue that good delis are as hard to find, if not harder. There's something about how it's done in the New York metro that the rest of the country is unwilling to replicate. Is it the lack of true hard rolls? Maybe insisting on pre-sliced meat and cheese? I don't know, but a sandwich in the Tri-State just hits differently. Gershon's brings that experience a couple hours north to the Capital District. I had lived in the Capital District since 2016, but didn't make it to Gershon until autumn 2020. And I'm really kicking myself for waiting so long. I ordered my deli standard: roast beef and Swiss on a hard roll. Shortly after ordering, I was walking out the door with a freshly made sandwich featuring meat sliced right in front of me. I got back in the car, took a bite, and immediately started wondering how I went over 4 years without a drive to Schenectady for a sandwich. It's not a fancy sandwich, but it's a great sandwich that reminds me of what I've been getting in NYC and on Long Island for my entire life. Tasty, rare beef piled high on a roll with only the toppings I ask for. Why, just why is that so hard for many sandwich places to do? The one star taken off is for price. Gershon's ain't cheap. I could get the same sandwich at a random deli in NYC for 25% less. In years past, I loved, loved,loved the decadent indulgence of a stop in for lunch at Gershon's for a big sandwich of fatty brisket or corned beef whenever I was nearby and not overly concerned about nodding off post-feast. I was nearby earlier this week and stopped in for what I thought would be a treat of brisket on rye. I'm not going back. The brisket was fatty and of poor quality, the rye bread was -- as I told the gentleman taking my money behind the counter -- not the kind any Jew eats (i.e., this Jew proclaims this is not near to being anything close to "Jewish rye" -- what they are passing off as rye has the texture of white bread and little rye flavor). The tomato pickle was good. Twenty bucks down the drain. Bummer. Not about the money so much as losing a culinary delight. I was playing in the USTA sectionals at Central Park a few years ago and had the opportunity to have one of their great sandwiches. So when I was in the neighborhood, traveling through Schenectady, I knew I had to stop for lunch. I called ahead and the sandwiches were prepared on time. I got the hot pastrami on a roll and the brisket sandwich on a roll. Both came with a pickle. You can add what you want to it and it was very cool that I could customize each sandwich. I got a bag of chips and seltzer. My daughter and I had a great lunch together! There is indoor and outdoor seating. Parking is very limited. What can I say about Gershon's that hasn't already been said? Probably not too much. What I can say is that the staff is friendly and attentive, the decor is simple with pictures of old Schenectady (which I love), and for a deli in the Capital Region, the food is pretty great. So let's break it down. I'm obsessed with "G" on the menu with a large Diet Pepsi. So much so, that I often get craving for it on a typical Saturday afternoon. It's a triple decker turkey & bacon sandwich that comes with a side. Seems average, but I like to kick it up a notch by adding Swiss Cheese and lots of Russian Dressing. Now you may be thinking, "Hey man. Where are you veggies?" Well I got you covered. Just pop on some lettuce (and some tomato if you're "that" way) and get the macaroni salad side which has some tiny carrots in it. As far as deli's go in the Capital Region, it doesn't get much better than Gershon's in Schenectady. An Upper Union Street staple, it's a classic and they know how to make a mean sandwich. I had't splurged on Gershon's in a minute, but all it takes is one craving and some initiative to get a lunch order going... I went with an Italian mix sub: baked ham, cappicollo, Genoa salami, provolone, lettuce, and choice of dressing (I went with Italian, duh) piled on a French roll, and it knocked my socks off. First of all, it was practically the size of my head (and I have a pretty big head), so I knew I was taking half of it home (it's a good feeling to make a $10.25 sandwich last two meals, let me tell ya!) The sandwich was everything though: the cappicollo was tasty, although I would have preferred it more on the thin side, and the Italian dressing was so flavorful, yet I didn't bite into any soggy patches on my French roll, so I tip my hat to you, mysterious sandwich maker. Well done! I'll admit, next time I must to remember to tell Gershon's to go a little lighter with the meats: while they build their delicious sandwiches with loving care, oftentimes they're made with a generous/heavy hand; that's awesome, and appreciateqd by many I'm sure, but in my world, sometimes less is more -- especially when you're juggling multiple deli meats. I would give 5 stars because of my experience eating there. The problem is what they serve at the senior citizen center. My Mom and other seniors won't order from them have either stopped ordering food from them and several of them end up throwing out the food they get from there. read more

I ordered with my office staff in Albany. Some of our orders weren't filled correctly. Some were missing items or didn't get exactly what they ordered. I ordered the bowl of minestrone soup, which was very mediocre at best, with trace amounts of tomatoes, potatoes, celery, pasta and watery broth. Not exactly what I look for in a soup. I hope they can provide soup in the future that has some substance. This did not cut it, sorry. read more

A Schenectady landmark with eat in, take out and catering options. They make everything fresh right there on site from the roasted meats to the salads and soups. Everything is delicious. The greens and beans wIth sausage soup was loaded with beans and sausage the broth was delicious. The Ruben might be the best I've ever had. As I continued my quest to find the Capital Region's best sandwich shop, I decided to stop at Gershon's Deli. Now I really want to give Gershon's a 4 star rating, but too many things went wrong. To start, I ordered the Triple Decker G which is a turkey triple decker. I wanted it on Italian bread or a hard roll, but they were out of both so I settled for white bread. Also, I asked for no tomatoes, but when I opened my sandwich, there were tomatoes on it. Now, the sandwich had great flavor. The turkey was incredibly fresh and they put a lot of meat on the sandwich. In contrast, the white bread lacked flavor and was a bit soggy. This is why I wanted the Italian bread. Furthermore, I tried a ham and cheese on rye bread. I usually don't like rye bread, but this was really good. The bread was fresh and light. In addition, the ham was delicious and they loaded the sandwich with it. With this in mind, both sandwiches came with a side so I ordered macaroni salad and potato salad. Both were fine, but they tasted like ordinary deli salads. Overall, Gershon's has good sandwiches and I hope to give it another try, but they need to get the order right. read more

I will say that I was pleasantly surprised when I came here. I have heard of it's authenticity with the community and am always willing to give my two cents on my tried and true classic deli sub. Roast beef lettuce tomato onion hot pepper spread and thousand islands. That's my standard that I don't stray from so I can review which delis make the best sandwich. The service was fine and they were attentive albeit also distracted joking around. I ordered a sandwich on a hard roll. I was impressed with the flavor and will likely return if I am in the area. I was shocked however that my sandwich was 11$! Not even a sub, a hard roll sandwich, also the pickle.... was still a cucumber I'll be back and see if the pickles are ready and grab it on a sub roll.
