After years of driving by this place, I finally went in to grab some pastizzi. It don't disappoint. I was hungry and needing a snack on the go. The woman, Antoinetta was very friendly, we spoke about our Malta roots. I tried both the peas and meat and the cheese. The cheese was my favourite. It was flaky, soft and crunchy in all the right places that a Pastizzi should be. And for $1.50, you can't go wrong. I wish I had waited till I got home to warm it up but like I said I was hungry. This cute little shop deserves more credit. It's a hidden gem that has you feeling you walked into a shop in Malta where it feels like home. Don't pass on this shop! read more

Love this place but mad doe sit need a renovation baaaaaaaaaad it's super dingy and a little sketchy looking. I know they're doing well with all their frozen products but common guys represent your country well!! Malta is beautiful gem this place does not look it and nor does it represent the Maltese peoples pride in their buildings and aesthetics. This is a bit of a "hidden Toronto" place that a business associate with some Maltese family roots in the area (as we were coincidentally doing some work in the area) brought me to, introduced me to such things like pastizzi over some bottomless coffee. The Malta Bake Shop is a family run staple of the Little Malta community at the western tail end of the trendy Junction neighbourhood. Every wall is covered in pictures and maps and info of the small Mediterranean island nation from which hundreds of its people eventually settled in this part of Toronto. Pastizzi, the stuffed and very flaky pastry, is one of their staple popular fares. It comes in a number of varieties such as cheese, but I love the meat & peas one. It may depend on how much of each they have on hand at the time of visit. But they're only $1 each! Try finding anything in a Dollarama that's $1 these days! Don't forget to try a Kinnie--the imported orange-y sparking soda... goodness in a can. read more

Ordered the Cheese Pastitsi and they tasted like when I was a kid. I was so good that I returned the next day to Buy a bag of frozen ones to make over the weekend. I went here today because I was in the Junction and wanted to see unique places that were in the area. This place is a little bit off the main Junction strip on Dundas W. by a block or so. It's not as far as I thought when I was originally reading the comments here. The bakery itself looks quite old and has a bit of a hole-in-the-wall look to it. I went here specifically for their pastizzi which I've never heard of or tried before. The crust is crispy and flaky, it reminds me of phyllo pastry but with a bit more chewiness/less thin. I tried four different flavours: - cheese - cheese & spinach - potato & onion - meat & peas I liked the cheese and cheese and spinach ones best. I forgot to ask what kind of meat the meat ones were but the peas had a canned peas kind of taste to it and I wasn't a fan of that. All in all, very tasty. Also I could not believe how cheap they are! They're only $0.90! I also bought a round, open face cheese tart/pie with a shortcrust. That was really yummy as well! I wish I had bought two. Aside from these savoury pastries, there are also cookies and other sweet items. I was surprised they were all wrapped up individually. I found that kind of odd. My friend bought one of the wrapped sweet items and really liked it. I didn't get a chance to see which one though, since I was too busy picking out my pastries. I think this is a good place to check out if you're somewhat in the area. I don't think I would make a trip here just for this place only since I live in the East end. First time here after passing by many times. Situated in little malta, is this cute family owned bake shop. The owner could immediately tell it was my first time there, as i just ordered the same thing the previous customer had. He recommended the pastizzi, which was a savory pastry - they had a variety of flavours, and i only ordered the cheese, potatoe and onion, and the cheese and spinach which came up to only $3.15! They were crispy on the outside, and so flaky, the flavour was definitely there. I will absolutely make many trips back to try their other treats! There were many small tables inside if you want to eat in, and order a coffee. But it fills up quick with many locals who frequently meet up for a coffee and snack. read more

Arriving here was an unexpected adventure---a longtime worker was retiring after a few decades, so a lot of regulars were there with a cake. My travel companion and I sat in a corner to eat our pastizzi. I tried only the pastizzi (I'd had sweets at a few other places that day), but they were truly wonderful. Perfect amount of crunch and flakiness (similar to a good sfogliatelle), with a perfectly-flavored filling, and somehow not quite too oily. Well worth the trip. read more

We had with cheese (bil rikotta) and with meat (corned beef) and pea. It's true what they say, huwa mimli il-Ħadd wara Knisja and they had sold out of ftira and pizza. Amazing family run bake shop with traditional Maltese snacks, desserts and more. Now I dont know the name of all the desserts but this is by far the best of all the maltese cafes in the GTA. The pastizzi here is so buttery fresh and flaky. They even have one with anchovies that is so delicious. Well seasoned full of flavor. There is also something called Qassata , which has the same fillings as pastizzi but different dough. I enjoyed them just as much. Lastly there is a dessert with a cannoli like outer core filled w dates n fried. To die for! Almost like Imqaret but different shape. Sundays after church are pretty busy but customer service is always on point and efficientl. Everyone treated like family. They only take cash and etransfer. Been coming here for years, since about 2011. Place is always amazing! They make amazing Pastizz (also they sell them frozen in many stores like Highland Farms - ravioli too). Whenever I want my Kinnie fix, they are there with the Kinnie (the most amazing soft drink in the world). On the counter, they have a huge jar of Ġbejna ( Maltese cheeslets) which is hard if not impossible to find in Canada. You will get the most amazing cannoli as well. here. Everything about this place is great, hope it stays open for a 100 years and beyond. read more

My favourite thing about living inToronto is experiencing a plethora of world cultures through food. Malta Bake Shop is a perfect example of that! The savoury pastizzis are uber crispy and flaky. There are so many sweets and unique cookies to choose from it is best to have a few adventurous friends along to help you enjoy the many, sometimes exotic flavours. I think this is family owned and every time I have been there I have had kind and courteous counter service. Have you ever had Pastizzi? A savoury, flaky pasty that is usually filled with cheese, or potatoes and onions, or peas. With a cup of coffee, these are a delicious weekend treat. A Maltese friend of mine was visiting Toronto and he introduced me to this bakery. We made a longish trek to get to it from St. Clair West, then realizing it would have been much faster to simply go up Dundas West, but at least our appetites grew! This little bakery is tucked away at the west-end of The Junction. They serve the very tiny Maltese community in Toronto with its Pastizzi, almond fingers, Cannolis, sweet bagels and more. The pastries are all traditional Maltese and are an experience to enjoy. At a low cost, try a few things and share with your friends. It'll make a nice morning. The shop is non-discrete on the outside. Inside, the walls are lined with maps of the Maltese islands, historic newspaper clippings and photos of popular figures at the bake shop. You can purchase their Pastizzi and some other desserts frozen for home. They are also available in many stores across the GTA. Finally, pick up a pack of Kinnie. It's a bitter-sweet soda that is great alone or mixed with some alcohol :-) read more

My Dad is Maltese, so I was exposed to Maltese baking from a young age. We used to come here a few times per year as a family when I was younger, and it was always a treat. Now, I'm overjoyed to have moved just down the street, which means pastizzi whenever I want! The place hasn't changed much in decades, and that's a good thing. This little hidden gem in Little Malta, though not hidden to the Maltese. Seems to be family run for a long time. Was told of this place by a friend and it's really good. So come in here for a coffee, have a pastizzi and just enjoy. So what's a pastizzi? Picture spankopita pastry, triangle form, snack size. They have pea stuffed and ricotta stuffed. Personally I like the pea stuffed but the ricotta I bet is more popular and is also pretty good. On the walls hang old photos from what I presume to be a long time family run business over the years. Proud of their family and all their achievements, successes, and love. Why the for star? Well I mean this is a local a local place and their coffee isn't anything to write home about. But I'd still come back cause the pastizzi I've never seen and they seem like good peoples. read more

Located close to a church so traditionally Sundays after mass are really busy but the best time to get fresh Pastizzi. Like many places in the old parts of Toronto parking can be hard to find so you are better off in the back streets than the meters on Dundas. Its a family business and the staff is very nice. They make most traditional Maltese items really well and have free refills on the coffee as well. The best thing about the Malta Bake Shop is the environment. A European feel with pictures on the walls, small tables for a communal feel, and a great buzz during busy periods. If you come when its not so busy I don't recommend the Pastizzi as they keep it under heat lamps. Try things like Asetat (Molasses rings) or traditional Maltese biscuits), just ask the staff to run through the options. If it was not for the Pastizzi under the lamps during slow periods I would give them 5 stars. read more

I have been coming here forever and it is by far my favourite bakery in Toronto. When you first walk in, you may not initially agree with my 4 star rating, but remember appearance is not always everything, and in this case Malta Bake Shop is like the plain looking girl in school with the incredible personality. If you are a fan of European Style baked goods, you are going to love this place. The most popular item on their menu is their famous Pastizzi's (cheese filled pastries baked to perfection). This is their signature dish, and they bake thousands of them weekly. They taste best when they are fresh out of the oven. If you take them home, just re-heat them in your oven for 5 minutes or give them 15 seconds in the microwave If you have a sweet tooth, ask for the date filled pastries, or the traditional Maltese biscuits. Places like this make me more and more a fan, envious of Toronto. Authentic food that take you to another place and time. Their savory items are rock solid even in today's MSG driven world the ricotta and beef pea fillings stand out. It is the sweeter fare that I at first took as bland but then realized this is the flavour with the original ingredients, dates, crushed almonds what they had on this island. My wife always goes on about what did the original flan, ie before condensed milk etc taste like. In the same way I feel saddened how places like Tim Horton's create abominations they call carrot/bran/blueberry muffins,butter tarts. I pity new arrivals to Canada and their first stop being a "nirvana" of a chain restaurant. Anyway after a nice lunch I asked myself why do some of the dishes have such Arabic sounding names. A historical classic in our family as my Grandmother was born in Malta, and every time we visited her in Toronto, no visit was without pastizzi from the Malta Bake Shop. On my most recent visit, I stopped by for a few of these little treasures. The shop is old school, cash, simple diner chairs and decor, probably the same as it's always been. The owner should take pride in their pastizzi. Arrived from Vancouver and drove to the Malta Bake Shop. My dad used to take me as a kid and they were always fresh, hot, and delicious. Today, she reached into the warmer (not the back whenever oven like she should) and gave me these luke warm, dry, hard, terrible pieces of rubber. I cannot tell you how disappointed I was. It's too bad because the owner was nice. If they aren't fresh, don't serve them. I hate writing bad reviews but it was such a let down. read more

This place is absolutely wonderful. We went there twice on our vacation in Toronto for breakfast. Everything we tried was delicious and the staff was very helpful in teaching us about all the delicacies from Malta we had never heard of. Everything tasted home made but refined. Great little spot.. I hate the location.. I feel like it is in the middle of nowhere and very much a "destination location" as nothing else is around... but I understand that is the "Maltese" part of Toronto so I get it! I just wish they would move south to Bloor!! :) Pastizzi is great, I have been coming here for years with my dad and grandparents so it is very much a nostalgic experience to say the least. I also wish they would have more rice in the oven or pasta in the oven readily available.. I feel like if they moved to an area where there is a lot more foot traffic they would flourish & be able to have these types of dishes ready as they would probably be busier and no food would go to waste! Not that it isn't successful.. I know it is! I also wish they took debit... no one carries cash anymore!! I know this may sound like a negative review its really not..
