Came here after watching Top Chef: Portland. Man did it not disappoint! My girlfriend and I ordered a half bird for us to share. We ordered the aji verde sauce and it was absolutely killer!! We almost cleaned the sauce container clean. For our 2nd sauce, the host recommended the "Elephant" sauce which isn't on their menu. It was supposed to be a similar to garlic aioli, but I think it was okay. Then we ordered a chicken broth (tall size), harissa cauliflower, and grilled potatoes to munch on. Came for the first time for brunch over the weekend. Made a reservation on tock which was easy and I'd say was necessary for weekend brunch. We were in the first group of folks seated so something unique(?) that happened was biscuits not being ready yet. So we ordered at the counter and were told biscuits would be ready in 30min-ish. I was impressed with the attention to detail. It seems like they either hire staff who are service-oriented, anticipating needs before asked, it was a slow Sunday, or they put their A team on Sunday brunch. No matter, I think this was a very strong service experience. We were offered an extra heater (!), sharing plates, another round, and checked in with several times by several people about how the food was tasting. I started with the yogurt which was a work of art. Something about leaving my 30s made me start ordering yogurt at breakfast. I always thought it was a boring waste of a breakfast but not this little number. There were at least 3 fruits, granola, a caramel sauce, edible flowers in this bowl. It was large enough to share while we waited for biscuits! As I sipped my bloody Mary, I thought how I should start a bloody Mary gram and rate all the bloody Marys around town, the way I do in my notes app with cappuccinos. This was not my favorite bloody Mary but that doesn't mean it won't be yours. This bloody is served in a festive party Flamingo glass with a Tajín inspired rim. The mix and the rim lean heavy into citrus. So if you like a bright, tangy bloody, this is your spot. I like a thick, spicy mix with good garnishes (Sckavones does a candied bacon that might be my #1 around town) but I also appreciate a classic where every ingredient shines, even the humble stalk of celery. This had celery, a pitted olive with no pimento (TOP MARKS), a pickle section, and I think that was it. A very solid offering, but not my favorite because it was so bright and lemon-y. When the food came, we were both impressed. I had the biscuit and gravy with two poached eggs, chicken sausage + mushroom gravy and a side of habanero pineapple hot sauce. My only minor criticism is the eggs were overdone. You could rake a fork through the yolk without it resolidifying. I think a poached egg, classically, is more jammy. It might have been attributed to the weather (45° or so) on the patio but i would specify a jammy yolk next time. The biscuits were def worth a 30min wait, esp if you could sip the bloody while you waited. I don't love mushrooms but this sauce makes me think I've been wrong. So savory and comforting. Also, I took half a biscuit home and gave it 30sec in the microwave and it was still perfect later that day. 100% would recommend for the service and quality of food. 100% will return for dinner. This is one of the prettiest restaurants in the area! Wow, the neighborhood is up and coming, and has been changing A TON in the last few years, from what it used to be. I love the wide open windows and open kitchen area. The keep their wood logs inside, and that contrast with the wooden architecture is beautiful. I like how you can see inside the kitchen at the chefs at work, and chicken cooking on the burners. I came on a Saturday morning at 11:30AM, and there was no one in the restaurant, even though it opened at 11. I was expecting there to be a wait, but we were able to order right away, and the food came out quickly. The chicken came out first, and then the sides of sweet potatoes that we ordered. The chicken was nice and juicy, and was okay with the price point for the quality and amount that came out. You could taste the smokiness of the chicken, and with the delicious sauces that we chose, it added a whole another dimension to the flavors. The sweet potatoes were nicely cooked, and I loved the sauce it was in. Upon leaving, everyone turned and thanked us for coming in, which I thought was a nice farewell. My clothes did end up smelling like smoke, but it's not something that I mind. I eat Korean BBQ all the time, and for places like these, you just have to prepare and wear clothing you don't mind being smoky, or ones that you'll wash in the next couple of days. I can't speak on the smoky smell before the updates to ventilation, but when I came, I didn't notice the smokiness in the restaurant at all during our meal. read more

This is by far the best chicken restaurant in Portland. The chicken has a fantastic brine and is very flavorful. Sides are delicious. Lovely sauces to accompany said chicken. Its a order and sit down kind of place, but I found everyone working here to be helpful. I really enjoy this place and think its a great place to go for some healthier fare. Portions are small and it seems pricey to me (hence the 4 stars), but otherwise I highly recommend this restaurant and definitely plan to come back. read more

My husband & I came here for dinner pre-pandemic, and were impressed with the flavorful sauces, etc. I'm pleased the quality has remained top notch. Burger is so good and the house made chips are so addictive. Service is always so excellent and professional. Especially the open kitchen makes the place so special. They only use wood fire as the direct source of heat to cook all the vegs and proteins. They told me they go through half a ton of chicken a week. (that's why the chicken is only available on dinner.) Also I love their appetizers and desert and drinks selection. Fish, steak, prawns with 5 different house sauces. It's kind of amazing. I expected the chicken here to be good, but I was very impressed with how great it was! I'm a dark meat person and got the Chef's plate, which comes with 1/4 chicken (1/2 breast, 1/2 wing, 1/2 leg), choice of starch, and fruit or veg. Between my dining partner and I, we ended up getting one of each option. The breast was as good as the dark meat; it was all juicy and flavorful. I chose the vadouvan sauce, which made everything taste even better, it is a very thick, rich curry sauce. The grilled sweet potatoes come with vadouvan sauce too, so maybe it would've been smart to choose a different sauce, but I liked it so much I ate all the sauce I got! Grilled new potatoes were also good, but not as special. The asparagus was perfectly cooked and well seasoned. If you want the more unique side, get the grilled mango. Although not in season right now, roasting highlights it sweetness and it was not tough or stringy. It's topped with edible flowers and beautiful. They have a nice Covid patio with plenty of heaters and fire pit. It is not so enclosed as to essentially be like eating indoors. They check your temperature when you arrive and you order and pay on your phone. Went on a Saturday evening and got seated right away, they seemed to keep things moving pretty well as there always seemed to be an open table. One of my favorite places for dinner in went Portland. Loved them for years but have especially been loving them since their menu revamp this last year. Their chicken is simple but fantastic, love all of their sauces but my favorite is their pineapple hot sauce and aji! Can't go wrong with any of their salads but the MB salad is fresh and herby. A surprising stand out from their newer menu is Wagyu tartare and MB burger. The wagyu tartare is served with a pickled mustard that I wish they sold in jars and then MB burger has a ramp aioli that is fantastic. Staff is friendly and quick. My son and I were excited to try Mama Bird for brunch, good choices for vegetarians, good reviews. We made a reservation the day before to be sure of a seat on a busy Sunday brunch hour (not necessary, place was very quiet) I'm not sure if this place has a different vibe for dinner, but wow, first impression: brunch vibes were super low energy, like some terrible thing had just happened (and maybe it did...not sure, and we hope everyone was ok) It took 20 minutes after being seated to even be acknowledged by our waiter, and 40 minutes for our coffee to arrive. We are used to busy brunches in Victoria, so it would have been not a big deal, but it was not busy at MB. French press coffee was AMAZING, and the waiter kindly apologized and comped the coffee. This was appreciated, and we were anticipating a lovely time forward. The veggie menu, the reason for the reservation, was totally unavailable. Waiter didn't really have good alternative recommendations, but we got there, ordered Bennies. At the one hour mark, two stone cold orders of Bennies arrived. We were hungry, and also confused... When we told the waiter, he had to discuss this with the manager, for some reason. Weird. I've served before- when you send food back, that usually doesn't require a 10 minute conference involving several people (visible to us from our table). Waiter came back, offered to fire them up (whatever that means...new food? Heated up plates we already had been served?) we opted to leave. We tried to notice positives, lovely patio, cute doggos at the next table, but overall, I feel like this was among the worst brunches of my very lucky life- not a tragedy, but in this competitive and expensive market for restaurants, I feel like MB will be out of business, with totally avoidable issues. read more

No buttons or controversial shirts on their attire. Food: 10 Star The fire grilled chicken is exceptional. Not to much salt . The balance with the rest of the herbs was perfect. Grilled perfectly. The cauliflower is without a doubt the best we have ever tasted. The potatoes were good. The Chimichurri sauce goes very well with the chicken and it was mixed very well. The Question: Yes, we will return and add Mama Bird to our Weekly Go To Restaurants. Consider this I am very very selective on where and what I eat and this restaurant has all the boxes checked. Visiting from boston and came for chicken. Surprised to find beef pop-up but stayed since it was holidays. Noise level was comfortable. 6 of us shared 1 NY strip and 1 Ribeye ($70 each) and sides. The Ribeye was predominantly inedible fat, which we felt was unacceptable for a $70 piece of meat. We told the waitress and showed her and she essentially said that was too bad. We also had a wrong drink order that got straightened out after a bit of discussion. The sides were good. We were ok but not real full and stopped for ice cream after. There was an automatic $40 for service and a large group charge (6 people is large?) for $13.40 bringing our total bill to $329.64! Think we should have had better meal for that - at least a better piece of meat. Would like to try the chicken. read more

Had a lovely meal here recently with my family. It is reasonably priced. Walk-in only for dinner which is nice when you haven't thought ahead. They streamline their service a bit by having you order before getting your table. Love that everything comes easily sharable. Everything they make tastes fresh, flavorful, and healthy. We tried all the sauces and my favorites were the chimichurri, aji verde, miso garlic, and romesco. The hot sauce was nice to mix with some of the others. Chilly February Oregon evening. Last night was date night, first time ever here, we wandered in unknowingly, we had no reservations, and all they had was a table on the outside patio. It was a bit chilly but intimate, my wife and I loved it. We loved it so much we brought our three daughters with us again, the next night, for them to try. The only reservations we could get during our time slot was again outside on the patio. It was definitely chillier tonight, but we didn't mind. We were just happy to be able to enjoy such a nice meal together as a family. With work, school, and our crazy kids soccer schedules, family meals are far and few inbetween. We didn't mind. As the night went on others seemed to mind sitting outside as it got colder, so either they would leave. Or they would get seated inside. The restaurant was full and we had a party of 5 so we understood. As the night went on and the restaurant started clearing out, others kept getting seated inside while we were the only table outside. The food was great and we enjoyed our family meal. It just would have been nice if someone considered asking us to come in from the cold instead seating others before us because they complained about sitting outside and we didn't. - Left out in the cold read more

Really enjoyed Mama Bird! Such a cool food concept and the space is nice. Fits in the trend of new restaurants putting a lot of focus on aesthetic and atmosphere as Instagram and social influence has gained so much value. The chicken was fantastic, so much flavor and cooked to juicy perfection throughout. Also, the sides and their side sauces were also so delicious and fresh. The price point was agreeable as well. Beware, while delicious, the side orders of potatoes are fairly large and more than one for two people is a lot! We got both the sweet potatoes and the red potatoes. Not going full 5 because, while we enjoyed our meal, my fiance still felt the much maligned smoke/ventilation situation persisted and she smelled smokey the rest of the night afterward. I have never really smelled the smoke so I can't comment on that. Well actually today I see what someone was talking about but you have to take a really good whiff to notice. And they have a huge a$$ grill, so it makes sense. It's not overwhelming in any way imo. I will say they have improved on things since I came the first time. I know my order is annoying because I have a sensitive stomach so I can't have too much oil/salt but they adhere to it at least which helps me out a lot. And they are friendly when I come in. I also really love the bone broth. I wish there were better bulk options of that because I would take it home. I still think the price point is a tad too high overall. But I am a fan. I just mostly do the sides and bone broth. I have tried the chicken but I only eat breast meat, so it's a waste to get the chicken meals for me. We love next door so we've been counting down the months for this place to open! We started smelling the woods burning a couple days ago so we knew the day was finally coming! It finally opened this week so we HAD to go opening night to check it out. We were pleasantly surprised with the feel you get as soon as you walk in. It's bright but in a good way. We were welcomed with a warm hello. There's plenty of seating inside and we cannot wait until it's nice out again b/c they have a good outdoor seating area. One thing I like is the simplicity of the menu. The pricing for everything was really fair too, especially considering being located in Slabtown. I quickly realized this place is about wine and lots of great choices. One thing I noticed was they had Reiner for $3. I was happy to see that. Just wish they had Tecate as well. The Pelican root beer on tap caught my eye so I had to get it. We got a half chicken to split between the two of us and although at first glance we were skeptical of the serving size but after we dug in, it was the perfect amount leaving us both full. The skin was both of our favorite parts! It was crispy and just delicious! The chicken was juicy and had good flavor too. We also got the small serving of the sweet potato, which was good. Don't forget to dip your sides in the sauces too! One thing I was super sad about was that they didn't offer mac n cheese!! Kind of a let down. The sauces are all different and all good! I believe we had the chimichura, curry and a red one. We enjoyed all three of them. One thing they need to sort out imo is how you pay as if it they're a fast food place or a bus your own table joint BUT it's not! They bus your table but there's no way to know this until after you pay, sit down and finish eating. This was just really confusing b/c I honestly tip different of the place expects me to bus my own stuff. Lastly it would be awesome if they offered a neighbor discount for people that live on the block or in the neighborhood like how Lela's does, even if it was just a $1off our bill or something. This place opened on September 26th, 2019. We came in at 8pm for dinner that night. This restaurant has been teased for months in Slabtown, and suddenly all the paper on the walls came down and they opened for business. Here's an overview: The first thing you smell when you walk in is charcoal. It feels like you're at a campfire, surrounded by fir trees. The first thing you see is the open fire pit in the middle of the kitchen, chicken on top and wood on the bottom. The entire restaurant is sparse, wood, white plates and long thin lights, and this fire pit. It's a nice aroma. We ordered 4 items. It's a little more expensive than fast casual, but cheap enough that I'd consider getting this multiple times a week for lunch. The bone broth came out first. Turmeric, lemongrass, fragrant, etc. They bring a mug and pour it out from a jug. Very cool. For three dollars, you get 60% of a mug. If it was a little less salty it'd be perfect. The two sides came out next. The polenta was creamy, filling, nice? I don't know. Nothing special. Well done. The peaches were wonderful. You get a grilled fruit for $3, and they were nicely charred, warm and fragrant but still juicy. Cut them up into pieces and eat it all! FINALLY. THE CHICKEN. The skin is the best part. Apparently they airdry the chicken overnight so that you can get crispy skin. It is good skin. It shatters in your mouth and has a great salt and smoke flavor. You can see some complex chemistry going on there. The actual meat was tender and juicy. It wasn't the best chicken I've ever had -- because of the grill, it doesn't lock in all the juiciness of the chicken -- but it was solid. What I do like is how if you order a half chicken, they make sure you get one of each kind of piece. Lots of diversity and it keeps things interesting. We got two sauces alongside it. I would review them, but I don't want to leave a bad impression at the end, so I won't. No takeout option to start. It's all dine in for now. There's a nice outside seating area. Tables are anywhere from 2 to 8 people. Plenty of seats at peak hour. read more
