It lacked the welcoming atmosphere you hope for when sitting down to breakfast. Although our server was friendly, he appeared inexperienced, and the overall operation felt chaotic. The food arrived in a reasonable amount of time, and we were in the restaurant for approximately 30 minutes total. After finishing our meal, I requested the check and asked that the remainder of my disabled friend's breakfast be boxed up. After paying, I stayed at the table for just a few minutes to finish the cup of coffee I had purchased while my friend briefly went to the car because of his disability. Before I could even finish my coffee, a man who appeared to be the owner or manager approached our table and asked, "Are you going to be much longer? We have people waiting." I found this remarkably unprofessional. We had already paid, had occupied the table for only about half an hour, and I was simply finishing my coffee. When I asked what the issue was, I was told they needed to be considerate of the customers waiting. My response was simple: "I'm a customer too, and I don't feel you've shown the same consideration to me." I fully understand that restaurants need to manage busy periods and turn tables efficiently. However, hospitality is measured by how customers are treated, especially after they've chosen to spend their money in your establishment. Rushing paying guests out the door particularly when one member of the party has a disability is not good customer service. It communicates that maximizing turnover is more important than treating guests with respect. There are countless breakfast restaurants in Portland that serve good food while making customers feel welcome and appreciated. Unfortunately, The Stepping Stone failed at the most important part of the dining experience: hospitality. Based on this experience, I will not be returning, nor would I recommend it to others.

I opted for 1/2 brisket, side of mac and cheese, pickled red onions, and banana pudding. The brisket was fantastic! I was excited to see how big and thick the slice of brisket was and that it was from the fatty point. The brisket shattered the benchmark set by the other bbq restaurants in town and stands in a tier all by itself IMO. I felt like it was as good as some of the better places I've had in Austin and Dallas (easily better than Terry Blacks). I have a love/hate relationship with banana pudding. Most of the time it's just average...average is fine/good but it's easily forgettable. Lil Barbecue's banana pudding was anything but average/fine/good...it was God Tier! I infrequently eat banana pudding so my memory might not be the best, but it really felt like this was the best banana pudding I have ever had in my life and it is not to be missed here. It tasted "real" without being too artificially flavored with banana, not too rich, not to sweet, and even had slices of real banana in it alongside Nilla Wafers. It was perfect! Ordering was counter service up at the bar and with these types of places service usually takes a back seat. I was surprised to learn that this wasn't the case, in fact this is probably the most attentive staff when it comes to counter service I've had in Portland. At best most places would just visit your table 1-2 times max, but here I want to say 4 different staff members passed by my table maybe 6+ times and one of them went above and beyond to address my issue that I didn't expect. We stood in your entrance, waiting to be seated for 5 minutes and 6 different employees passed in front of us and didn't say a word...two employees passed us by multiple times. Finally, someone decided we were important enough to acknowledge and seat. As we followed her to the table, we were able to view her baby blue bra with her backless spaghetti strap dress. JFC...develop some uniform standards already so that I am not being engaged by someone in their trashy underwear. She came back to drop off a dirty water carafe and didn't say a word...not hello, not can I get you something to drink, not so and so is your server...nothing. After sitting for another 3 minutes with no interaction we got up and left. You were excellent at one point in your history. You had standards, you cared about service, and your food was reasonably priced. So basically, you are now offering much less for more. This is how restaurants go out of business in this ultra competitive hospitality environment.
