This restaurant has been on my list of places to go for a while now, so when my husband mentioned it for our anniversary dinner, it felt like the perfect opportunity. Our server greeted us in a timely manner, but after that we didn't really see them often. We saw other servers for other sections checking on their tables frequently and also helping out with the delivering our drinks and food. We were at the table for at least an hour and I think our server checked on us maybe once. There is also a 20% gratuity added automatically to the bill, which I normally wouldn't have an issue with, but I also didn't feel our service was worth 20%. I was really excited for the food before we even arrived. The sample menu online looked so good and I had been thinking about it all day. I was actually pretty disappointed by how it all turned out. I really do believe they are trying to do upscale dishes and it feels like they're close, but not there. My cocktail was the Spring Old Fashioned and I didn't particularly know what to expect, but this blew my expectations out of the water. It was fresh and perfect for a hot day. It was almost floral, despite no floral ingredients listed. We started with the albacore crudo and the bread & butter. The albacore on the plate with the capers was good, but the sauce and the potato chips didn't feel like they complimented the fish. The chips were good on their own, but oily. The fish was already drizzled in oil, so it felt like a little much. I wanted a crunch with the fish, but didn't think this was the way to go. The sauce was very subtly flavored and also didn't contribute to the fish. I ended up eating the fish on its own and leaving most of the sauce and chips. The bread & butter was actually my favorite part of the meal. The bread had a nice crust, the middle was soft and perfectly flavored, and the butter was lush and salted. If all I had gotten here was bread and a cocktail, I would've left happy, if not still hungry. My main was the MacFarland dry aged trout, which I was really excited for, but the trout was just slightly undercooked for my liking. The sauce was fresh and there were plenty of greens, but there was a bitterness to the dish that I don't feel it needed. From negatives to positives Ok Omens covered it all. THE FOOD: The Crudo-3 stars. The albacore was solid, the capers added a wonderful burst of salt that complimented the fish well. The oil on the fish I felt was unnecessary, and when paired with the very oily chips I felt the oily flavored dominated the course overall. The aioli-ish spread ( im not 100% sure what it was) added some more fish flavor with slight warmth that contrasted the fish in a way that was not for me. I liked the spread better on the bread. The bread- 5 stars. high quality and the butter was exceptional The emerald Triangle- 4 stars. solid cocktail overall. Balance was decent, not in the top tier of cocktails and not the worst Steak Frites- 4 stars. The steak was delicious. Cooked medium and flavored well, paired with the Diane sauce there was a very rich amazing steak that I enjoyed. The fries were wonderful. However both components of the meal were deep and rich. I pulled some mustard greens off of another dish at the table and that complimented the steak so much better than fries. The main components of the courses were good but on every course barring the bread, I needed something to balance the course better. The steak having greens to brighten up the richness did wonders, a sauce instead of the spread and chips would compliment the albacore more. I think with some minor tweaking the food could be fantastic. THE SERVICE: A 20% gratuity fee was included already and I definitely felt like OUR server took advantage of that. Our server was casually walking around while we saw everybody else running around and constantly doing things to help the overall flow of the restaurant. Our server checked on us twice. Which is the same amount that the outside tables server came to take care of us when they saw something that could be acknowledged. If we had a different server I do think I would not have felt a negative way regarding the 20%, but ultimately I was frustrated by a lack of service from them. read more

Perfect. Delicious oysters were amazing and what I'd expected Artichoke and zucchini barigoule was so fresh the pine nuts were a nice touch. The happy hour white paired with both so well. My date got the burger and the fries are crispy on the outside and creamy on the inside. The burger was delicious too The highlight is the kombu icecream. We had it last year and they have it again. This still came out to $30 total for a dozen oysters and two glasses of high quality Riesling--a deal so good we came back three days later! But it was also the rest of the menu which pulled us back, such as the asparagus with pistachio foam, pork chop with hazelnuts, trout with parsnips, and the excellent friendly service. I'd been wanting to try OK Omens for a long time. From the outside, on hawthorne blvd, it always looked like the kind of place I'd love - so my expectations were pretty high! The exterior has so much charm, but the inside felt a little cold and not as welcoming as I expected. Nothing was necessarily wrong, it just didn't have the warmth I was hoping for. We came for happy hour and took advantage of the $1 oysters. As advertised on their Instagram. Unfortunately, as someone who has eaten a lot of oysters around Portland, these weren't my favorite. There was quite a bit of shell left in several of them, which made for a less enjoyable experience and they were very tiny. We also tried the poke crudo, which was good, but honestly the olives ended up being my favorite thing we ordered. The wine selection seemed to be a big focus here, and if you're a wine person, I can see the appeal. The wine we had was solid choice. Overall, I'm glad I finally checked it out, but as someone who is always is on the hunt for great oysters, I probably wouldn't recommend this spot for just that. read more

Very classy place that is quite serious about their food and, especially, their wine. Come here when you're in the mood for classy elegance. And dress up a bit. Everything here, the atmosphere, the food, the drink, the air is done with excellence. I appreciate that and that's why I'm posting this review. I just didn't feel comfortable here. Fine wine tastes like "wet concrete." Really? Is that a good thing? It was just a bit too much for me. Probably just my issue or my mood on this day so, again, that's why I want to recognize the level of excellence they've achieved. We went to OK Omens for their Happy Hour. They also had a pretty big outdoor seating area. Since it was a beautiful day, we decided to sit outside. We got a couple of cocktails, Omens Summer Spritz, and Summer Old Fashioned. Omens Summer Spritz was not very sweet, but had a hint of sweetness. Not overly fruity either. Just a really good adult beverage. Summer Old Fashioned had a great aroma of orange, nice, strong drink to make you relax for sure. We ordered a few HH dishes. First one was Ceviche Cocktail. It wasn't a big portion, but it sure was packed with ample amount of seafood! Chips had a slight little kick that went great with the ceviche. French Fries with Za'tar Ranch and Ketchup on the side were really nice and crispy. Za'tar had a nice kick to it. "Rotating" Toast on this day was Fava Beans with Hazelnut Romesco sauce, and Mint. This baby sure had me after one bite. It was super amazing! Bread was perfectly crunchy, fava beans had great plump texture, and the flavorful oil making it extra delicious. Last but not least, Open Faced Ahi Torta, which was not a part of the Happy Hour menu, but from their regular menu. Tuna was super fresh, thickly sliced. The spice on top had a kick to it, maybe sansho-type spice? The butter and aioli were sooooo good! We had a nice, relaxing early dinner here. The staffs were very polite and friendly. This is my wife's and my favorite restaurant in the neighborhood and perhaps our favorite place in all of Portland. The food is consistently first-rate and quite inventive. The service is also excellent - it's clear the staff really cares about the clientele. The atmosphere is also great - casual enough for a simple meal out yet nice enough for a special occasion. Did fail to mention that the prices are also very reasonable? Frankly, I'm surprised that this place isn't consistently packed. It should be. Call it one of Portland's true hidden gems. Went this week with a friend. Choose a night when Machete had their residency. Soooo glad we did! Had several dishes and each better than the last. The ceviche was tangy and good. The crispy chicarron is actually vegan and not pork. Delicious! The Machete was fab. We chose the Tinga and Piccadillo as fillings. Both were so good! The turkey leg was moist and steaming hot. So tender and delicious. It made such a statement when it arrived at the table that we shared some with a neighboring table. We all agreed about how terrific it was! The chef treated us to the squash appetizer. The squash was perfectly cooked and the sauce so rich and good. For desert we had the layer cake and another one that I can't remember the name of. I could have the peanut butter layer cake every day. The restaurant was cozy and comfortable. We chose an evening when Machete was in residence (Sunday-Monday) and it was amazing. We love this place- the room is casual and charming, the service is always impeccable but not a bit stuffy. The food is great no matter what you select. Been going here for years for all those reasons, so when they sent out their prix fixe Thanksgiving menu we jumped on it. And, boy oh boy, no complaints - it was one of, if not the best restaurant thanksgiving meals we have ever had. Four courses, lots of choice for each course - partner and I loved every bite and came home with a left-overs for a great lunch. The service was great and the bar stepped up with partner's manhattan and my dry gin martini was delightful. Went with a single glass of wine and their list of single pours is extensive. So, no matter what is going on this is always a great meal, well served in a comfortable room with a perfect noise level. And to add to all of that partner says that their restrooms lead the pack for both very clean and well styled. Call that icing on a perfect cake. read more

My wife and I went specifically for the "kitchen takeover" by Machetes, which is a food cart that is operating at OK Omens on Sundays and Mondays during the winter (unclear when it ends). The hostess thought for a good long while about whether they could accommodate us when the restaurant was less than half full and we didn't have reservations. She eventually asked if we could be done within 90 minutes, which we had no problem with, and seated us at a two-top. Service was prompt and friendly, served by four different staff. We had the non-alcoholic Pina Colada, which was an interesting mix of very tangy pineapple and smooth coconut cream. Not bad. She had the vegetarian Machete with roasted cactus, which I had a sample of and thought was a bit bland. Fortunately, they supply a couple salsas, some creme fresh, and some pickled radish that one can spice things up with. I had the chicken tinga Machete, which I enjoyed. It was about a foot long, indeed shaped like a machete, and thinner than I expected. They add on a 23% service charge and say that an additional tip is not expected, but the credit card receipt has the usual empty tip spot that might cause some folks to still add a tip to not having read the fine print. read more

The table ordered oysters, cheese, and bread for appetizers. Next time I would probably skip the bread/butter since the bread is the same served with the cheese plate so it felt mute when ordered. The oysters were the best of the appetizers, so I highly recommend them! For dinner, we had the pasta, fish, and salad (and fries). All were truly amazing, flavorful, and filling. The mushroom pasta is something I'll be coming back for. Service was excellent and felt attentive but not overbearing. My son had asked for some recommendations for natural wine bars in the Portland area. Ok Omens came highly recommended for both their wine selection and their delicious food menu. We made a reservation for Friday evening, our final night in Portland before heading home. The server greeted us warmly and sat us outside in their patio. It was a nice evening and the shaded area was perfect. We ordered the Jamon Iberico for our appetizer and it was incredible- the shaved ham paired perfectly with the charred levain sourdough. I had a summer old fashioned which was delicious. For my entree, I had the pork chop with peppercorn caper sauce, charred shishito peppers, and crispy fries. It was delectable paired with the French Syrah, tart and perfectly viscous. We also tried a few desserts, a stone fruit (grilled peaches) and vanilla ice cream and a mascarpone dish and fruit and pavlova pieces. Yum! My husband and I went here on NYE with a friend of ours for a 7pm reservation. We had a pleasant experience, but certainly not life changing and would go back again in the future to try it a different night. Food: We had a wide array of appetizers and mains that we enjoyed, including a half dozen oysters, roasted carrots and mushroom, fried chicken bites for the appetizers. Our mains included a new to the menu crab gnocchi with caviar and the pork cheek. Overall the food was good, but nothing stood out as overly memorable or outstanding. Service: When we arrived there were two open 4 top tables and 1 party checking in in front of us. When it was our time to check in, we were surprised to hear we had to wait for a table to finish their meal before we could be sat despite there being an open table available. We waited for roughly 10 minutes before being sat, while the empty table remained empty until well after we had sat down... weird. Beyond that, the service was slower than I would have liked but overall a very pleasant experience. ok omens has both a lovely indoor interior and outdoor dining space - we had a good feeling as soon as we walked up to the entrance. service was thoughtful and attentive (i.e for certain dishes like the trout toast, if the table is sharing, they'll bring it out already evenly cut for the party). our interactions with multiple servers were all positive. while there is an automatically applied service + wellness charge that may sound high, the pricing of the food & wine are quite reasonable, and service was consistently good enough that we found it all to be pretty fair. for food, we had the cured trout, dungeness crab salad, bone marrow beef tartare, and bbq mackerel. we were really impressed by how well seasoned and delicious all the dishes were. we found none of them to be either bland or overly salty!! I haven't been in since the remodel. The place looks great! They have also added plenty of outside tables. I met a friend here for some drinks and snacks and was glad that this was our first stop. They have a wonderful wine selection and a small cocktail menu. I started off with some wine, then switched to the OK Omens Old Fashioned and then bartender's choice. The old fashioned was made to my liking, which was less sweet. We had a few items to snack, which included fries, fried chicken bites, torito salad, and bread & butter. I think there were 5 in total. -Dungeness crab with saffron rice - was good, although I am not sure I tasted a bunch of crab -Fried chicken torito salad - listed as an entree, but if you have a good size group, get it as an appetizer and share -Chicken liver mousse - very rich, as expected. Apple bread is delicious. If you have extra, they can bring you some additional piece of warm, toasty bread. Entrees: Crispy duck leg - good sized portion. I had never had the flageolet beans before which were soft. Good seasoning and well cooked -Wagyu steak with oxtail au jus - also very rich and delicious Dessert: -I think there were 4 options - we got all and shared. Warm chocolate brownie (can't go wrong). Banana split was ok (does not look like a typical banana split. Basil ice cream was interesting. Very large wine list. Old fashioned was good. Several beers, but none on tap; few can options. oh my god. this was absolutely a transcendent experience of a meal, i kid you not. it was one of those that i'll remember for a long time, and it left me feeling so refreshed and in love with life and food and wine. thanks so much to your staff, ok omens. i'll be back next time i'm in town and recommend you to all my friends i'd had a less-than-stellar day, and before it even got too late, i reserved a table for one on the patio. let me drink some wine, people watch and read a book, life. it was one of those days... i made some sure choices on food and asked my server (brad, i think? i'm so bad with names, but he was the best!!) to guide me through some wine pairings. he asked if i'd have more than one glass, and admitting i can sometimes be a lightweight, offered to do half-pours to let me enjoy a variety as we went through the meal. hell yeah. i love little accommodations like that. i already felt more at ease and taken care of than at my other blow-the-bank meal that week of my vacation. so the food: i'll never say no to a crudo, so i had the scallops. so good. and the (i think it was a veltliner) wine paired so well. i could smell the aromatics as soon as the plate hit the table, and that peppercorn was so fun. this was a great pallet cleanser to emotionally wipe the day away. next they sent out the other two items in tandem: summer veggies in seaweed butter and dungeness crab. the crab is served all pretty, and you get to mess it all up to enjoy. it was like summer comfort food, and i wanted to crawl into the bowl. just what i needed. soul enrichment. big pieces of fresh crab. so good. and the veggies were the perfect showcase of a garden with decadent buttery puree. i felt so satisfied. with this portion, of the meal i had a half pour of the oregon orange wine. holy crap. the nose vs flavor profile of this wine, y'all. it was insane. so after that buffet, i was ready to drink and eat more, obviously. my 'like that but more' request after the orange was a cab franc that was saucy but delicate. i enjoyed that for a nice long while, remembering how nice and leisurely dinners alone can be on hot summer nights. their patio is truly an escape from the world. dessert, i again let go of the reigns. i'm usually a chocolate fiend but was pushed to get the summery one with basil ice cream/granita (who makes granita?!) and so much other fun stuff i wish i could remember. and being the truly wonderful server he was, conceded to my obsession with the aerated banana cremeaux on the 'kinda like a banana split' offering to have the kitchen put some on top of the other dessert. hahahah i love the absurdity!! yes! the half pour of dessert wine paired with this was absolutely stunning. the way it paired with the basil... it was melony and harmonized perfectly with high citrus notes and smooth sweetness. i want to live in this restaurant and eat and drink everything they serve. please adopt me, ok omens?? staff seems super chill and happy and like a little family. i'll absolutely be back. thank you read more

Date Night Hidden Gem - Great quality food, service, wine and cocktails. The ambiance was classy, warm and cozy. For wine lovers and foodies. We love a good simple menu with quality options. This is our second time here and this time we didn't have reservations but got a seat at the bar which was perfect. We started with their beignets and the grilled beets salad with a yuzu dressing and pear. The dressing was so tasty! Then for the entrees we got the mushroom pasta dish along with the waygu dish which was very reasonable priced and so flavorful with the side of almost like a cream of spinach.
