I am a northerner now living in Georgia. All the pies here are made of 15 lbs of sugar and maybe a pecan tossed in for texture. I very much miss a simple tart berry pie letting the berry be the star. I visited Cuyahoga Valley National Park recently and stopped at Szalay's produce market where they sell Mama Jo's pies. Took home a raspberry and a blackberry. Unbelievable. Lets the fruit shine as the hero of the dish. Not too sweet, not too tart. The crumble topping instead of traditional buttery crust would not have been my preference, but it did not hurt the overall product. Please send them to Georgia. read more

Pi day is my favorite whimsical holiday so I was determined to try local pie this year. Mama Jo's had been on my list for awhile so we ventured out. It's located in a rather large strip mall so there was plenty of parking even on a pie specific holiday. It's a cute shop with candy and other gift items and of course lots of pie! It had clearly been a busy day but service was friendly and efficient. The only thing that took some time was deciding which pies to try. We opted for 3 small pies to try since they were discounted that day. They were all good with the berry pie being our favorite. We found this just driving around doing errands and what a discovery it was as they have a huge selection of pies and other baked goodies for you to drool over so go ahead and get your pie on! Of the baby variations we went with the Carmel apple pie it was packed full of filling and Carmel it was baked perfectly and full of flavors that you just know were yummy! I first found out about Mama Jo's from the Market District in Westlake. They had the mini pies there for sale and I grabbed one by chance when looking for a sweet treat. I didn't really have high expectations, but that pie blew me away! It was honestly the best pie I had ever had (the Buckeye Pie). It's the perfect mix of chocolate and peanut butter cream filling, loaded up with a generous portion of delectable whipped cream...and a few little cute buckeye chocolates to top it off. I was hooked. I since went back to Market District and tried a few other flavors, but none ever topped the Buckeye pie. I knew I wanted to make it to the actual Mama Jo's in Amherst at some point. So when I was in Cleveland for a recent trip (I live in AZ now), I drove to Mama Jo's to get my brother-in-law a pie. He likes the fruit pies, so I ordered him a blueberry pie. And of course I got a Buckeye one for myself :). The options here at Mama Jo's are endless. Even just choosing a berry pie, there were so many (Elderberry, Brambleberry, Blueberry). They also have a few different sizes to choose from. It's overwhelming! Which is why I was VERY grateful for the patient and friendly worker who helped me narrow down my choices. All told, I am more of an ice cream person than a pie person, but Mama Jo's is the lone exception where I'd choose a pie for dessert over ice cream. When a father of a friend of mine died, I struggled to find a unique way to support the family knowing that they would be barraged by great homemade food made by others. When I was driving through Amherst I remembered hearing about Mama Jo's, so after doing some reconnaissance, I found out that my friend likes apple, peach, and Keylime pie. I bought him a stack of pie - a large Keylime, a regular size peach, and a small 6 inch apple pie. That's one of the great things about Mama Jo's, the pies come in different sizes. He and his family enjoyed all of the pies and had a hard time determining which was the best, but finally settled on the Keylime. I, of course, had to test his theory so I drove out a second time to get my own Keylime pie, which was extraordinary. Then I went back a third time, in the spring, to buy rhubarb because that's when rhubarb is best. Again, extraordinary. Mind you, I live an hour away from Amherst! It means a lot to say I've become committed to this place. In fact, I plan on making seasonal trips to continue to try as many pies as possible. Very nasty place walked into this backers noticed that as I was about to order my pies that they were not covered up in the freezer behind the counter also noticed that there were lil ants on their floor under a table. Was informed by one of there workers not to eat there because they leave pies out all night in the back pie crust be laying on carts overnight they don't close the chocolate chips up or any toppings that they use. They have trash cans by the pies that are left over night , some of the workers don't use gloves at all when in the back making pies. They informed me that they have cleaning people come in and clean while we are in the back doing pies he sprays counters and runs a machine on the floors this is a man that cleans when thanksgiving hit she said the man came and cleaned while we were cooking and preparing pies for people. They use toilet boil cleaners for certain things like very nasty and I would not go back there again and I hope that nobody else will as well. I'm for sure calling the health department about this because that's very wrong and to serve people pies like that is very unprofessional and very disgusting read more
