A small market located in one of the busiest Vietnamese plazas in all of Bellaire, Cho Thanh Binh…read morehas definitely seen better days. It is rarely crowded, extremely dated, and has nearly non-existent customer service. It is also often mistaken for its neighbor with an extremely similar name but completely different experience. (#1) There is a bit of a drab feel, not because the market isn't inviting or bright, but because it feels so different compared to other nearby markets who have lower prices, more staff, more selection, and far better decor. Additionally, the cramped layout isn't helping their cause. That's not to say what they have to offer isn't worthy: their roast meat section seems to be popular for catering and meats for takeout. The produce isn't particularly great but the meat section seems to have been extensive enough for the elders to buy (various) parts for home cooking. Everything here is slower. The checkout, the perusal from patrons, the staff, even the carts are slow to be returned. While I applaud them for serving the locals, I do think there is a lot of room for improvement. Much of the staff is Vietnamese speaking only. __________ (#1) https://yelp.to/XYkPbElcpW

I prefer that one because this store entrance is weird and store is much smaller. I don't understand why they have similar sign styles. This store has larger lobby for live plants. But the AC unit was inside. There was a stink in the meat section. Aisles are narrower. There are lots of merchandise though. I was gonna ask the cashier about something. But I saw her talking to herself sitting there. Wow. Oh no. I am leaving.

This market is one for the largest Vietnamese markets I've ever been to, offering a wide variety of fresh fruits, frozen foods, dry goods, imported sauces, sweets and more. I particularly love their extensive rice paper selections. My favorite is the "no water" rice paper, which doesn't require dipping in water to roll up like traditional ones. Unfortunately, this type of rice paper is available at every asian market so I'm happy Tan Binh has them. They also have a nice section dedicated to ready-to-eat and hot foods. You can grab and go with options like fried fish, tofu, and cooked meats. Customer service is usually pretty friendly. Just like anywhere else, you should check the expiration date of every product before buying. My cousin forgot to do so and bought two boxes of solar dried bananas that were expired. And during the warmer seasons, they set up a nice plant and herb section for sale right outside the entrance.

I visited My Hoa Food Market today after seeing their Facebook advertisement for 15 lbs of rambutan…read morefor $10. When I got there, the clerk told me they had already sold out of that batch and only had a different 15 lb batch for $15. She claimed this batch was fresher, redder, and sweeter, so I initially agreed since I had already made the trip. However, while I was waiting for them to bring the fruit out, the clerk insisted that I pay before even seeing the rambutan. I explained that I wanted to inspect the fruit first, especially since they were claiming it was fresher and higher quality. The clerk then told me that if I didn't pay first, they would cancel the transaction entirely. That immediately raised red flags for me. I've never had a market refuse to let a customer quickly inspect produce before purchase, especially when freshness is the main selling point. The whole interaction felt extremely sketchy and unprofessional, so I decided to walk out instead. Buyers should be very cautious when purchasing fruit here. My experience left me feeling uncomfortable and distrustful of this establishment.

For an Asian supermarket as a whole, there's so many better options around the area (Hong Kong,…read moreHMart, Viet Hoa). Limited produce selection, although you can occasionally find a nice deal on select items. Quality is hit or miss though. They serve Chinese BBQ meats up towards the front. I've always been tempted to try it but have never had the chance yet. This supermarket's most redeeming factor in my opinion is their seafood section because they not only offer cleaning, but fish frying services for free! They clean, fry, and season the fish here very well. Highly recommend their spicy seasoning. They sell my favorite type of fried fish here too, the golden pompano. Takes about 20min to fry. Prices are comparable to other grocery stores and much cheaper compared to if you were to buy fried fish at a restaurant. The only other places you can purchase supermarket fried fish of your choosing like this around Houston are probably Ranch 99 and Seafood City. 5/5 fish frying services, but the rest of the market leaves a lot to be desired.
