A small market located in one of the busiest Vietnamese plazas in all of Bellaire, Cho Thanh Binh has definitely seen better days. It is rarely crowded, extremely dated, and has nearly non-existent customer service. It is also often mistaken for its neighbor with an extremely similar name but completely different experience. (#1) There is a bit of a drab feel, not because the market isn't inviting or bright, but because it feels so different compared to other nearby markets who have lower prices, more staff, more selection, and far better decor. Additionally, the cramped layout isn't helping their cause. That's not to say what they have to offer isn't worthy: their roast meat section seems to be popular for catering and meats for takeout. The produce isn't particularly great but the meat section seems to have been extensive enough for the elders to buy (various) parts for home cooking. Everything here is slower. The checkout, the perusal from patrons, the staff, even the carts are slow to be returned. While I applaud them for serving the locals, I do think there is a lot of room for improvement. I am so confused. This store is called Chợ Thanh Bình Market. There is another market on the other side of this huge parking lot called Tân Bình Market, while there is Chợ in front of it. I prefer that one because this store entrance is weird and store is much smaller. I don't understand why they have similar sign styles. This store has larger lobby for live plants. But the AC unit was inside. There was a stink in the meat section. Aisles are narrower. There are lots of merchandise though. I was gonna ask the cashier about something. The prepared food area wasn't very appealing or organized. The prices were somewhat competitive althought there were some items that were priced extremely high. And there was a smell that wasn't rosy. We spied the new spot which is in the same plaza but on the other end. The parking lot there is paved and it's bigger and newer. I've been coming here for two years even though I'm told the other market is consistently cheaper. I travel 30 mins to this store, my sister is here from out of town for my BD and I was excited to show her one of my fav stores. I was so embarrassed by how rude the cashier was. I picked up a bag of rice and it rang up to what I thought was the wrong price, no biggie. So I asked if I grabbed wrong one and she just repeated the price. I asked again, she said, year 2019, blue bag, so my bf said I'll just swap it out. There was no one behind me, so no one was being held up. The people who work here are the type to turn on a dime. We came here because we wanted some shredded pork skin. They gave us two boxes from the freezer and were really happy to help us, but the boxes weren't sealed properly. My cousin made the mistake of dropping one box, and everything fell on the floor. We cleaned it all up, got one more box, and paid for all three (two including the one she dropped). While I understand that this situation can give anyone a sour mood, what follows is more concerning. We cleaned everything up from the floor and placed it back into the box. My cousin handed it to them and asked if she should dispose of it or if they would (so as to not sell it), but the cashier wasn't even listening to her. We had this nagging feeling that they would put it back in the freezer and resell. You break, you buy. You drop, you pay. She cleaned up and paid. There was no reason to be so rude to her. And during this whole ordeal, a random guy was looking at watermelons on the floor, dropped it on the floor, and casually walked away. I went to this supermarket. A few employees there didn't provide any type of service because they were closing. They didn't want to cut up any beef and stated I had to cut it myself. I put back the beef and left the store. I went home and next thing you know. The police arrives at my home. I asked "why are you here? They replied that I stole a piece of beef. The police waited for the store to replay their camera surveillance and found out I haven't taken anything. Be aware when u shop here !!!! I shopped this market this weekend because convenience for me on the way and the line was so long to check out. Normally I usually look on the receipts but I was hurry so I didn't check right there. I got home and looked at the receipt and saw they charged me 25$ for something I didn't buy. I don't think I could even give this place one star. I don't believe this long-time market, which is one of the symbol of Vietnamese community in Houston, responded really badly to customers. Today, I bought a bag of citrus orange. I didn't realize until I cut the oranges that all of those were bad. They were all inedible, bad smell from inside. I went there to complain and ask for a refund since in the receipt, they said it could be returable within 24 hours. However, the old lady at the cashier (maybe the manager, they didn't even have a customer service counter) was very rude in response to my complain. They said no refund for fruit but nothing said on the receipt. They didn't even show the sign on the fruit shelf saying no-returnable. They just said "no-return" without giving a provable, acceptable rule or paperwork. They didn't spend time to listen to my complaint. I don't believe this market has still existed for over 10 years with this kind of disrepsectful customer service. I also think they import goods from unreliable source and put in the bag with reputable trade name. This is horrible. Do not go there to buy food or things. This is my go-to asian supermarket for my FRESH MEAT PRODUCTS!! I've bought fresh meat like short ribs at another asian supermarkets and there was a big taste in difference, and there was actually meat on the ribs not just fat like other spots. The meat is always fresh here and you can definitely tell the difference with their meat products even after cooking. But I wouldn't go here for other grocery shopping items. There were times the vegetables do not seem to be cared for or restocked. It's a small asian supermarket so there is a limited number of items that they carry. In the wake of hurricane Harvey, this supermarket was selling a case of water for $7.99. I had no choice but to buy it since I needed one. I believe this is price gouging taking advantage of customers during disasters time. Just file a report with the attorney general of Texas about them for price gouging. If you try to inspect papaya, coconuts and cut fruit for quality be aware that the ladies at the food prep area will complain to the manager. The manager is a little old brown skin viet man who wears a gold chain and has the worst hostile attitude. He has confronted me many times verbally harassing me about touching things especially the papaya. He claims he is concerned with COVID but readily admits that he does not like me. I think he has mental health problems even though he claims that I am the one who is crazy. Sounds like someone who projects too much. He says he will call the police. I won't ever go back even though I have bought many papaya and cut fruit in the past when he is not there. If the store accepts returns which they don't people won't be so selective about the quality. And yes the quality can get poor at this store. This store is very expensive as well so it makes customers more picky . Please avoid this store to avoid the negative drama, the questionable quality and the higher prices. read more

This old Vietnamese woman from the prepared food area stood behind me as I inspect the thai coconuts. I am very picky and shake the coconuts to make sure there is a lot of water. She goes up to me and speaks to me in Vietnamese. I don't speak it though I look it. I shrugged because what else can I do. I went about my business. This woman tattle telled on me to two old vietnamese male workers. They told me to stop shaking the coconuts because doing so would make them go bad and customers will complain. Never heard of that before. Something about gases in the coconut. I said well maybe the shaking will loosen up the meat if it's too soft. The guys kept watching me as I shop. The funny thing is that the coconut i was doing all the shaking was the one I bought. I don't know about this place. It seems odd and a bit overpriced. Those old Vietnamese women working in that prepared foods section should mind their own business. They don't work in produce.
