Went to the cafe inside sweets oyatsu. Pretty pricy almost $8 for a matcha and it was good but not sure if its worth the price. The mochi was amazing however also a bit pricy for almost $5. The strawberries were the sweetest and ripest paired with red bean paste. read more

I didn't even know this market existed!! It's located in a lil plaza. My sister and I came to daido to search for more matcha. We really just wanted to see what they had in comparison to seiwa. It's a bit on the smaller side. Not much to choose from food wise- it's basic, and the sushi is smaller. They had a great snack and drink selection though, and the matcha section was pretty solid. Towards the aisles in the back, they sell lunch bento boxes, cup ware, utensils, etc. Towards the front they have a small bakery section with prepackaged breads. The employee at the register was super friendly and soft spoken, and there were only 1-2 other customers at the time of our visit. Overall, it was a great experience, and I'd come back! Nippon Daido is a small Japanese grocery store located in Westheimer and Wilcrest. I would come to this grocery store all the time when I was a teenager. When I started my associates degree I would come here too since Houston Community College is right across the street from it. I am happy to see that this small grocery store is still standing. Although this grocery store is small, it carries a variety of products. It has poke bowls, rice bowls, sushi, and bento boxes for you in case you do not have time to prepare a meal. Nippon Daido also carries a large variety of beverages that are very known in Japan. They also carry different kinds of beer from Japan and sake as well. Everyone is obsessed with matcha right now and I saw they had a different variety of matcha. I myself am a fan of tea. Theu even have different kinds of tea that I hope to try all of them one day. If you are not a fan of tea, I also noticed they had different kinds of coffee. This grocery store also carries a good variety of Japanese candy. We have all seen and heard about the different kinds of KitKat, well, this place carries them. I ended up buying the milk tea KitKat and it a nice delight of a flavor. I noticed that this place carries stuff to do hot pot and barbeque items in the frozen section. Japanese ice cream is carried too like taiyaki vanilla ice cream and red bean ice cream. I myself am a big fan of Kirby and noticed they had a Kirby cup. As much as I wanted to buy it, I had to pass up on it today since I own too many Kirby items. They also carried some Sanrio items but a lot of kitchenware without any design. What I like about this grocery store is the fact they had origami paper and Japanese notebook if you wanted to practice writing in hiragana or katakana. I used to buy those notebooks when I was practicing learning how to write and understand Japanese. In the same section they had very adorable toothpicks to make your own bento box. Something new I saw was that this grocery store has its own little sweet shop called Sweets Oyatsu. I tried the strawberry matcha latte and from I am seeing their famously own strawberry mochi. When I tell you the strawberry mochi is to die for! It has a very sweet flavor coming from the strawberry itself with a hint of sweet red bean. The chewiness of the mochi made the experience even better. The strawberry matcha latte was pretty good. You could really taste the sweetness of the strawberry and the slight bitterness of the matcha. I grew up in Alief my whole life. Nippon Daido is a hidden gem that Alief has in Houston. This small grocery store really brings the Japanese culture closer to home. I always like supporting small local businesses and as much as I do not visit this area anymore. This place has a little bit of everything from Japan! From toys and candy to a variety of foods, wine, and so much more--it's a fun and unique spot. They also sell homemade sushi and really good matcha. I ordered my matcha cold, and it was super tasty! You can also get it hot and add extra treats to customize it. I got there before noon and a lot of the sweet treats were already sold out, so it's best to come early. Truly a wonderful place. I make it a point to drive 30 minutes from Montrose/Houston Heights area to come here because of the products they carry. By the time I leave my cart is always filled to the top. I simply can't get enough of this place. Today I decided to stop by on a whim while waiting for a pickup order nearby to be ready for me, and ended up leaving with a total of $70ish in a combination of ingredients, instant Tteok-bokki, snacks, onigiri, and sushi. They discount their premade foods like croquettes, chirashi, sushi, and onigiri near closing time making it a great place to grab a very affordable and easy dinner to take home. They also have a large selection of Japanese imported snacks, drinks, and ingredients so if you're more interested in cooking your own meals at home or restocking your pantry with snacks, this is the place to visit! Their prices are very reasonable, and needless to say, I'm glad that they've stuck around all this time. Daido market is your local Japanese market; it's physically close to Seiwa (a much larger store). It's part of a shopping strip that seems to be mostly empty except for Daido so there are often plenty of places to park. Daido boasts some benefits of local markets. It has it's own in house cooking. There are freshly made onigiri (I saw, tuna and mayo, salmon, shrimp tempura and unagi). There's also sushi grade fish and prepared sashimi. In the frozen section as well there are items made in house like shrimp tempura and various prepared dishes. Seiwa also offers a similar selection of in-house items but from what I've seen they lack the onigiri. They also lack the cream puffs that Daido makes fresh (only on the weekends). The staff are very polite, and give the traditional bow when helping you with your transaction. The store is small but has every category you could think of including skin care, and sake sets and traditional ramen bowls. The prices are also rather reasonable especially for the in-house made food items. Each onigiri was less than $2.00. read more

Grocery shopping on my day off is probably one of my favorite things to do and I am a frequent flier of every market both asian and American. For Japanese/sushi I always like to go to daido or hmart. I went to seiwa once and although it is much larger than daido I ended up getting less than I normally do here. It's been awhile since I've come to daido but I had a sushi night and came on Thursday (multiple reviews say this is one of their delivery days). I was so happy to find fresh scallops (SO SWEET), salmon (2 types), blue fin (chutoro grade!), regular tuna, uni, sweet shrimp, tamago, yellowtail, red snapper and much more. Everything I got was soo fresh. I also spent so much on other various snacks, seasonings, soup bases, frozen quick meals. This store may be small but it truly has everything Japanese that's needed. I even saw many different drinks that I haven't seen since my trip to Japan. I was looking for sashimi grade salmon and this place was recommended. We went in and there was salmon! We got 2 sashimi grade salmon (roughly .5 oz and we paid $15 a piece), and the Atlantic salmon (this was more like .3 and I think around $10 or something). Also took a perusal of their cooked food section and got salted salmon bento, eel don, and a couple of onigiris (eel, eel, spicy roe, pickled plum). Tried some other stuff but really we were there for the sashimi. The market has assortment of items as well and we got a few things to try. Bento box is perfection. It's roughly 8 and you get a good piece of salted salmon, shu mai, half of a spring roll, some kind of wakame, lotus root, some meat w/ a piece of stringed pasta and a good servicing of rice. It is a bit on the smaller side (or Im just greedy) but it was tasteful and I appreciate quality. The eel was good too. Sashimi didnt smell, was fresh and it made me happy. Will definitely be putting sashimi on my grocery list from now on! Oh and we got a creampuff from the cooked food section - DO NOT SLEEP ON THIS! - it was filled with cream and 230 calories BUT damn delicious and share with someone. I want it again :D read more

If you are looking for Japanese grocery items, this is a great spot. It's a bit hidden but easy to find once you spot it. It's not very big and fairly plain. Unlike Seiwa, it seems to be focused on more Japanese focused items. We went on a dreary Sunday afternoon and it wasn't very busy thankfully. They were out of a lot of prepackaged foods so I assume early is better than later. They have a small assortment of veggies and fruits. Very fresh. And a variety of noodles (I found a few hard to find ones). They sell fresh seafood and meats. And ice cream as well as frozen foods. I picked some vegetables and fruits, noodles, and a few bottles of sake. They also had some unagi (which was delicious). Prices are fairly competitive and the staff were friendly. It's important to update that this place don't have the pastries on photos anymore. We asked, and they told us they have not made them ever since COVID started. They don't have any of their fresh pastries at all. The rices balls I got to not taste good and the little meat inside is hard and dry like it's old. But just one of those days I have Japanese food crave and I know where to hunt for my specific needs. Great little grocery store with Japanese staples and they make VERY YUMMY AND FRESH sushi bowls. They include about 6 different varieties of fish over rice and it's very delicious and filling. A couple years back this was the only place with green tea KitKats but now this is one of the only places with fresh green tea cream puffs! So if you're in the area during the weekend make sure to come by because these are just as good as the cream puffs from Cream Whisker's in Austin. Plus they're a lot cheaper! Even though it is not a big supermarket you will more then likely find what you're looking for if you come here! What makes this location unique is that they have items that can't be found anywhere else such as the special edition matcha powdered green tea pocky which is not the same as green tea pocky. Also, if you're lucky they have amazing sales! So I'm trying to make authentic Japanese baby pork back ribs and I was looking for a specific recipe that was needed. Many places carry ichimi togarashi but not shichimi togarashi. Biggggg difference y'all! But here at Daido market they have all of the authentic and fresh Japanese items you need. It's like shopping at a small grocery store in Japan. Nonetheless, it has a lot of Japanese goodies from fresh produce, meat, seafood, snacks, Japanese beauty products, and frozen food. It even has a section for mangas, magazines, and other fun things. Ugh this one is really hard for me. I had been blessed with a handful of larger Japanese grocers and food courts in the past decade and I am still eagerly waiting to see the magic happen right here in Houston. This market is tucked behind a few restaurants but the larger signage on the street makes it less difficult to locate. The aisles are quite organized ranging from produce to canned foods, candy to health and beauty products, premade food items to sake. The raw fish selection is still pretty limited but they do have uni available if that's your thing (say homemade uni pasta anyone?) I think that the prices are fair and the sake collection is decent. I like getting the cream of the crop as far as onigiri right by the cash register goes...the earlier the better. The frozen aisle is nothing spectacular but you will be sure to find typical food items such as mitarashi dango and other mochi. If you think you can make your way to spending a thousand bucks anytime soon, be sure to pick up a stamp card where one stamp=$10 spent and for 100 stamps=$20 gift certificate. This is the small cute store. I tried to taste the onigiri (rice balls). It tastes good and new.
