A coworker recommended Mama's since I always have a difficult time finding a nice place to eat on Monday evenings because so many places are closed. I was pleased to visit Mama's -- it was very busy but still pleasant, warm, quiet, and nobody had to wait for a seat despite the number of customers. I was not warned about the extremely large portions of food so ordered a slice of Sicilian pizza which was about the size of a small cake. I also ordered angel hair pasta and a meatball (which was the size of a baseball) as well as a chicken salad, Pittsburgh-style with fries on it. Everything was good, especially the service. Mama's seems to be geared more to locals but I still had a great meal and everyone was super friendly. There is another place I love to eat at nearby or I would have come back for another meal. Next time I'm in the area on a Monday, I'll be back. Thanks for a great meal! read more

$27 for two sandwiches. Granted, we ordered one with a side of (cold limp) fries instead of the included chips- which honestly would've probably been better. The chicken sandwich was okay- their "hot" is definitely much hotter than most other pizza places in the area (I like it this way- just as a word of caution). The Italian (pictured) barely had any meat on it at all. The side of dressing was $1.50 extra. I don't mind paying for good food, but in my opinion, this was not that. to be blunt, I was surprised by the reviews here. I've had their food twice, and found it greatly under-seasoned and what you would serve a picky eater. one dish's seasoning was that the chicken had "the bones left in", which is true, is better, but a pretty modest effect. I also am not a fan of DelGrosso, so it might be an Altoona local sauce that they do well, and I just don't find flavorful. Or, the person ordering likes exceedingly bland dishes and had some spices removed for them. I did eat it, and i went back for more, but this might be why the French are thin. We were visiting Penn State Altoona and passed by this resaturant that was very busy so we pulled in. The restaurant had lots of seating and TVs (almost like a sports bar diner). The interior was clean and looked like it was recently remodeled. We were seated immediately and service was great. The menu was that of your typical small italian pizza/restaurant joint. I went with the italian sub which was nice and fresh but heavy on the pepperoni. My son tried the regular stromboli (ham & pepp) which he liked but thought it was greasy. We also got a side of fries (frozen bag type) that were piping hot and quickly devoured. Everything was good but nothing blew us away. Good for a quick lunch stop or those visiting the Campus. I hit Mama Randazzo's on a family road trip recently. We were seeing some PA sights and finding hidden treasures with an overnight in Altoona. Hotel staff recommended Mama Randazzo's as THE best in Altoona. Hungry for pasta we took the advice. No kidding - this place was seriously delicious. We all ordered various forms of pasta - with meatball and without. We had one full blooded Italian in the party to ensure we were objective, and after much slurping of noodles and stuffing of meatballs into our mouths we knew we had truly eaten in Altoona's finest. Arguably the best Spaghetti and Meatballs I have had in a long long time. Whatever your current situation you have to go there or get take out. I can only hope I make it back soon to have more. read more

Stopped here while in the area to continue a tour of Altoona's Italy. More of a college town-style eat-in restaurant - looked like they had a bar in the back. We sat up front near the door and ordered bruschetta. This was more the traditional speed of bruschetta I am used to - along with a mound of grated cheese on top of it. Decent taste. For an entree - I ordered the chicken parm which was really large and accompanied by spaghetti. The sauce was more of a thick sauce that had a sweet tang on the back end of the taste - straight off the vine traditional taste. For dessert went with the cheesecake adding chocolate drizzle. Tasted good. Would come here again - maybe try the pizza. read more

A group of us were in the mood for Italian food, and this business came highly recommended. Tucked away in a residential area, this business has strong local support for dinner, drinks and take-out. The local are not wrong. The interior is, well, eclectic with pictures on the walls of local people and local events, but done in a typical Italian neighborhood place style. Once seated, we had a variety of choices with a wait staff member who was spot on in terms of interaction and meeting all our services needs. I split a Large pizza with a friend and was very good, on par with the best pizza I have enjoyed with plenty left over. Other folks got Italian dishes, and overall everybody was very pleased. Walked in and was politely told I can sit anywhere I want including the bar. bartender was friendly. Had me a drink immediately. I ordered the stuffed shells, came with a meatball and a sausage, with a side salad. Everything seem to be homemade, except for the sausage. The food was all good, although I would not rave about it. We got food delivered from here last night and it was not all what we had expected. For raving reviewing and great looking menu we ended up very disappointed in the quality of food. The cheesesteak Stromboli was full of grease. The chicken parm hoagie had 1 teaspoon of sauce to try to cover up the dry and overcooked chicken. 3 large cheesesteak subs with everything included lettuce tomatoes, small amount of Mayo, on a small bun. The food way way over priced for the quality that was delivered. Disappointed to say the least. read more

Just ordered delivery and it didn't disappoint. Got a steak salad and a caprese salad. Had to add on the caprese bc minimum delivery is 20 fyi. My aunt and I shared both salads. We housed the caprese, the basil just tasted.so freaking fresh, we started working on the steak but just couldn't finish it. It was so big. There is definitely enough for me and possibly both of us to have for dinner. Both salads had the house dressing (which is delightful) and I also got a side a bleu cheese which was also very salad. My family and I have enjoyed excellent dining since the first day they opened. We love the owners, their variety of menu items, the consistency of their food, service & relaxed ambiance. Mama's brownies are the best. Because I'm diabetic, I buy one, have it cut into 4 smaller squares & eat each one after 4 lunch or dinner meals. They keep well in my refrigerator & taste great, even after I defrost it if needed. So far we've enjoyed over 22 years of excellence consistently every time. We love Paolo and Mama because they treat me as family. We miss Papa for six years. I arrived one day, parked in a handicap spot as usual, walked in & asked where I could sit & be served. The servers pointed to a table where they had unknown to me already had put my drink & spices on my favorite table. We all had a great laugh over that one! I have always felt at home here ever since day one, opening day many years ago. We love the people, the food and the excellent hospitality & service.
