This place came so highly recommended that we skipped our usual favorite and came to try it out. Sadly we were disappointed. Food was bland , burrito was cold in the middle. Nachos were pretty good. We probably should've known something was up when we pulled in at 12 o'clock on a Saturday and there was nobody else there.

Papa a la huancaina. Bland, too little aji, too thin, too few potatoes, overpriced. Bad all around. 1/5

Papa a la huancaina had too little potato, the sauce was thinned out and lacked color, lacked flavor, with no aji heat whatsoever. Also no included hardboiled egg, no olive. My guess is they're simpling it down way too much for the American pallet. That or they're cutting corners doing it too cheaply. Either way it was pretty pathetic, and at nearly $9 also overpriced, especially for what you're given. They did stay open a few extra minutes so we could make it for takeout, so I added back a star. I'm not sure if all of their Peruvian dishes are being done as cheaply as this. But this was an easy one to get right, and they missed pretty badly. If you go maybe stick with their Mexican dishes.

We love this hidden gem in Norman for their excellent drink selection and Mexican dishes - it's close to everything but tucked away from the hustle and bustle of the 24th Street businesses north of Robinson and the best place to stop before the hitting up the nearby bowling alley! This will be my first time to ever leave a review on anything, but after eating here I felt like I had to. We decided to eat here based off the reviews and honestly either people are lying or something has went terribly wrong. Nothing had flavor, the refried beans tasted like water, the rice tasted old the fajitas came out burnt, and we immediately took the meat off the skillet to prevent that from happening, but unfortunately, we were too late. The chicken steak and shrimp were all dry, burnt and had zero seasoning. I ordered one of my children a beef enchilada that he would not eat so I tried it and I can't tell if the meat was even real it was so bad luckily my other child got a corn dog so at least that was edible since it came from somewhere else. Not to mention most everything on the menu is $20. Honestly the worst Mexican food I have ever eaten, will not be going back. read more

Bland. Pricey but a lot of food. I went right before 8 on a Saturday. I had to pour salt on all my food. The beef in my taco was more white than brown. So dry I choked a bit and didn't finish it. I got my order in about 3 minutes after placing it. My plate was hotter than my food. My beans were not very warm. Rice was dry and completely flavorless. Guacamole was clearly not made fresh. Not sure what was. Maybe this was a rough night for them, but the place was nearly empty around 8. The presidente margarita was fantastic but a lot of ice. Salsa was good. What can ya do. read more

A couple of days ago I went in to have my usual favorite dish: vegetable taco salad. No one anywhere does it like Mamavecca's, and it has always been delicious-- except for today. Today they put in spoiled spinach that was undetected visually after it has been sautéed with the other vegetables. However, with every bite there was the sour taste when I eat the spinach. I want to implore the cooks to always use fresh vegetables; there is a big difference in taste. read more

Went for lunch and was disappointed in the value. Service was excellent. Had a taco salad, co-worker had the small enchilada lunch plate (one enchilada, rice, beans). One unsweetened tea and a water. $30 bill. For. Lunch. Ground beef in salad was gray. Flavorless, watery queso. The vibe was interesting: if you like loud Spanish version of "Genie in a Bottle" then this is your place. You can get better quality and value at Taco Mayo for half the price. read more

If you are looking for authentic Mexican and Peruvian food and a welcoming, relaxed ambience, this is definitely the place! I live in Grand Rapids, Michigan which has a large Hispanic population and consequently very many excellent Mexican restaurants. So, I was prepared not to be as pleased with the food at Mamaveca's here in Oklahoma. But, was I ever wrong! The food and service both at Mamaveca's is the best! It was so good that I went back to the restaurant a second time and brought my sister, brother in law, and nephew, all of whom live here. And they agreed that the food at Mamaveca's was excellent. On top of that, the servers graciously helped me to practice my Spanish in conversation with them. They were congenial, patient, and so helpful! I will definitely return to this establishment as often as I can whenever I'm in town. Five stars for this place (¡Cinco estrellas para este lugar!) read more

This place opened up near us recently. We went for lunch on a Thursday. Pretty busy for a weekday lunch. We ordered the burrito dinner and enchiladas plate. It came with unlimited chips, salsa, and queso dip. The service was quick and friendly. They refilled our chips and dips without asking. Food was great. It came out fast and hot. Recently discovering the world of Peruvian food, we have been trying places around the city. I happen to be feeling this type of food while in Norman and discovered this place. It's out of the way, but definitely good food. Their approach is a bit different, Ill even go as far as saying it's a bit cheaply made. I ordered the Lomo Saltado and you don't get much quantity of meat, it's veggie loaded and even the fries were skimped. For the price, I think we should have gotten more food. Taste was spot on though, it just wasn't much food for the price. Great friendly staff and clean dining area. read more

Stopped in for lunch today, first time, glad I did as the food was excellent. The chicken tamale w/ sour cream sauce and pork tamale w/ chili sauce are a must if you're a tamale fan! Lunch specials come w/ 2 sides and they offer many to choose from. Chips & salsa were super fresh and the salsa had just the right amount of heat. Very good service and the food came out quickly. Large portions will give you leftovers for the next day. Wish I would have found this place sooner! read more

Tried this place for the 1st time last week and all I can say is great food and excellent service! Staff is extremely attentive and friendly. More than one staff member, excluding our server, asked if we needed anything and checked on us. Doesn't seem like a super popular restaurant since the 2 times I've been this week () they weren't super busy and we were seated quickly and even received our food shortly after. The restaurant is not super big but has lots of windows to brighten up the space. I guess it's obvious to say I'll be back since I've already gone back for the second time. read more

Everyone says Tarahumara's is the best in Norman.. but this place beats them by a lot! My sister and I went here on a whim because Ted's had an hour wait. We were seated very quickly and had EXCELLENT service. The tamales were the best I've had in a while. Food was overall amazing. read more

This is my new favorite Mexican restaurant! The service is very fast and very friendly! There is never a wait (why I don't know)! The portions are large and well priced. I always get the chicken fajita enchiladas for lunch and take half home for dinner! Love the salsa, warm chips, and queso and the flour tortillas are homemade and delicious! Food is great, but not a huge fan of the fish tacos. Definitely recommend their other Peruvian options and their Chile relleno is delicious! Service is great, only one star for the fish tacos not being the best but there are definitely some incredible choices on this menu. read more

Drinks we started with Inca Kola (lemonade) and Maracuya (Mango Juice). These were a great starter, not tarts but not overly sweet. As an appetizer we got Patacones con ceviche de camaron. These are fried plantains like chips, topped with shrimp and an amazing sauce that will make your mother water. It's served warm and best to be picked up and eaten. This will get you ready for your entree. For a fish entree we had Ceviche de pescado. This is a dish with fish and corn in lemon juice and hot peppers. It's served cold on a bed of lettuce with sweet potato slices. It's very easy on the eyes, flavorful, good mix between the fish and red onions. The sweet potatoes gave it a good contracting flavor. Best eaten with the hot peppers and lemon juice. Our final entree was Lomo Saltado. This is a beef dish served over beans and tomatoes with rice, red onions and cilantro sauce. I put a bed of rice down, covered with onion, then beans, then the beef (which had the most amazing tenderness) and topped with the cilantro sauce. We had visited this restaurant prior to the new owners taking over. The previous restaurant served good food, had reasonable service and the prices were ok. When visiting the restaurant after the change of ownership we found the restaurant served much better food, the service was exceptional and the prices were the lowest in Norman. When eating there you see a large number of customers carring foam containers when they leave. Simply more food than you can consume at one seating. The service is outstanding, as soon as you seat down salsa, cheese sause and chips are on the table. If you wish they will bring you flour tortillas, corn tortillas, hot salsa (excellent) and mixed veges. Now you understand the comment about foam containers. Ihave tried several of the peruvian dishes and each was excellent. I would recommend this restaurant to anyone who likes excellent Mexican food and would like to try something different (Peruvian food). read more

My husband and I have eaten at Mamaveca at least 48 times since the first of the year. That does show that we really enjoy the dining experience there! We have tried the other Mexican restaurants in town and Mamaveca is the best! We love the food, first class service, and the people that work there are fabulous!
